T-Mobile HSPA+ only setting. - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Hey all. I am running Seraphim with ICS KID T-Mobile modem. The 4G is very inconsistent and I know there are people trying to working on modems to make it better but in the mean time I found that when my phone drops to the "E" signal I get a stronger signal and its a very workable speed. Now I was like some other who made the decision to just go back to the stock AT&T modem until a better T-Mobile 4G modem can be found but I found that the ICS KID modem on the non-4G data signal is faster (for me anyway) than the non-4G data signal on the stock AT&T modem. I asked the question of how can I get the ICS KID modem to just stay on the non-4G signal but the only answer I got was "Go back to stock AT&T modem" but I figured out on my own and just wanted to share with other T-Mobile users that rather than flashing modems over and over again while waiting for a better 4G modem if you go to the
*#2263# menu selct [3] GSM Band Preference and then select [5] GSM 850/1900 you can keep your phone on the non-4G signal. Like I said in my area I just found it to be faster than the stock modem.

good stuff.
im like you dude. flashing every ics rom with every ics modem over and over changing every setting just to get a useable data connection outside wifi
finally found good data outside using. its not ics but its high speed data and i can customize everything using other apps/mods/etc....
ROM : SAUROM_XLA2_RC4A
kernel : holoNoteKernel-0.1-2-k (DON'T flash the kernel fix it will fawk your sheet up cuz its for RC5 and up)
modem : Blaze_4G_LB7_radio_ATTNOTE
extra---
TWlauncher default launcher
setcpu: 192min 1836max lagfree
V6 supercharged. megaram1 768+ HP
KAK kickasskernel (k)
not turbocharged (not scared to use now that i have 4g useable)
rom toolbox: SD boost 2048kb
used part of build.prop tweaks from the (Tweaks) build.prop Post in Dev section. only the ones for sleep, and screen touch improve, jpg and no boot animation. nothing that effected oom

nevermind i found it.

SGS2 Modems - clinging on to 3G

I have a Samsung Galaxy S 2 (euro) currently running
- KJ1 frankenstein rom
- XEU CSC
- KI3 modem
- speedmod 2-13 kernel
One observation is that the phone tends to cling on to very low 3G signals. Arguably this isn't a problem per se - some may argue it's a good thing -- but I can't help thinking it's not the best for battery life.
This is especially true at work where I do have wifi. At home a 3G microcell solves the signal issue.
I was wondering if people found other modems like KI4 - or even earlier ones tackle this scenario differently. I can imagine never ending debates over which is better or worse of course.
I have tasker and thought about setting that to flip to 2G when wifi was detected, but it seems as if that option doesn't work on the SGS2 even with a rooted environment.
Maybe it's not really an issue...
You can check in in SamsungServiceMode and then do network priority I guess. All modems by default are set to hang to UMTS then if not switch to GSM. There's an option there however to do GSM first but i'm thinking it's more like if super strong UMTS is available it'll go there instead of staying on GSM.

[Q] [AU Telstra] H+, but no 3g

I have an SGSII on Telstra running darkyrom XXLPQ with KH3 modem. I've got an issue where data works fine on H+, but whenever the phone drops back to 3G I get absolutely nothing. I've tried disabling fast dormancy etc, but that just seems to reduce how often it falls back. Is there a modem I can use or a tweak that will let it get data on 3G as well as h+?

I think you are better off on T-model modem, like DVKF2 by telstra as that will work on your I9100T model best.
I have the same problem on stock 2.3.4, xeu. But it just about never drops back to 3g in Melbourne. So haven't bothered with telstra modem yet.

I have a feeling you don't understand this very well and if I'm wrong I'm truly sorry. Either move to an area that you know does not have hspa coverage (otherwise known as 3g+ or 3.5g or h+ or 4G in North America depending on the phone model, manufacturer and provider) but rather only 3g and test there and come back to us or disable hspa in hidden settings (phone control/nas control/hspa control/choose r99 hspa off),which should disable hspa/hsdpa and hsupa and test and come back to us. That should give you data while 3g symbol is lit at reduced speed of course.
Right now all you seem to notice that when you engage data it is h+ and when it falls back to 3g, the symbol is only for voice over 3g therefore no data arrows.
Yeah, I'm talking about when I'm I'm an area that has poor hspa coverage and it drops back to 3g. Btw, my old xperia had no problem getting hspa in these same areas, so my radio performance is generally pretty bad with the sgs2.
Try all the I9100T modems until you find one that works well for you; they do generally work better with the I9100T than I9100 modems. And if that doesn't work, then you might as well try all the I9100 modems.
I've got an I9100T & found there's 2 or 3 I9100T specific modems that I get great signal strength/data speeds with (and granted 1 I9100 modem), and the rest are ordinary for me.
There is no simple fix for this. It's a trial and error thing. Unless you want to spend hours on the phone to your telco for probably zero result ?

Threw me off, because of mentioning 'fast dormancy'.
Good that I apologized in advance then.
I would still recommend testing it the second way I suggested just to see whether it works at all. I also sometime end up in an area that while seeming to have full strong signal, due to a congestion at a peak and other factors, has no or very little data throughoutput (this being in canada).
As suggested by others, testing other modems may help as well.
Don't even get me started with sgs2 and nokia's regarding radio.

LTE Speed Saurom vs ICS

Question - does anyone have any idea what is different with the Saurom rom that allows me to get LTE speed (18-20 down, 4.2 up) with the status notification switching to LTE for data, while no other ROM does? (Baltmore area). I tried a couple of the new UCLD3 roms today, achieved somewhat decent 4G speeds, but no LTE. I kept the UCLD3 modem and went back to the Saurom rom, and boom - back up to LTE speeds again with proper switching when making calls.
I'd really like to know what Saurom rom has (in the build.prop maybe?) that the others don't. Would love to switch to an ICS for daily, but download speed is the priority.
Thanks.

AT&T JB on T-Mobile network

Strating a new topic to figure out which radio works better on T-Mobile for AT&T JB update.
Before JB update, like several other people on this forum, I have been using i717 on T-Mobile network . 4G has been working fine with GT-N7005-IMM76D-DXLJ2 Rom and UVLG3modemfori717_gt-n7005amss radio.
1. UVLG3 modem with GT7005 amss gives no signal.
2. UVLG3 modem with JB amss gives no signal.
3. Stock radio and amss in JB update only connects to Edge. (unless you are in area where T-Mobile has 3g on 1900?)
4. Blaze ICS modem connects to 4g but signal bars are not shown in status bar.
For the best modem so far, check the below post...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41052527
If anybody else tried any other combinations, please post your experience in this thread.
Thanks.
same here plus i try it with Telus modems too not signal (signal comes and gone)
I made my own combo for WIND in Canada (confirmed to work on T-Mobile with much higher speeds). It's really slow (about 1 Mbps down and 50 kbps up) but at least it works (good voice/signal strength and somewhat usable data)
It's the SGH-T989D (Telus Galaxy S II X) latest modem (TLMC4) and AMSS from the old Blaze modem posted around this forum. Just flash it with CWM.
http://speedy.sh/uyHBp/SGH-T989D-TLMC4-amss-from-blaze.zip
Steps:
1. Flash in CWM
2. On reboot, do a network scan
3. Open dialer, dial *#2263# and select WCDMA Prefs -> WCDMA 1700
4. Do network scan again, WIND (or whatever your AWS provider is) should appear. Select it and it should register.
5. You can multi task back to the service mode and go back and select "[1] Automatic" to use all bands again.
No responsibility if it bricks your phone, it works on my SGH-i717R without issues
OT: I also tried SGH-T989D_TLMC4_radio.zip and it works on Bell/Telus/Rogers without any mods. However, trying any T989 combos never really worked (some did, but data kept dropping).

This is an important thread for this forum. I'm in the same situation, utilizing the AT&T rom on an AT&T device, and trying to use it on T-Mobile.
My experience has been strange. I am using the stock firmware radio with the AT&T JB update, and I seem to connect to 4G randomly on T-Mobile, switching between UMTS:3 and HSPAP15. I am usually on Edge more often than "4G". I don't have LTE in my area, and "3G" on 1900 doesn't work on my Wife's Iphone.
I tried the UVLG3 Modem for i717, and got no signal at all.
I haven't tried the Blaze modem. What I want to know, is what is the experience with Blaze when you look at system status? UMTS:3? HSPAP?
I am on stock modem in JB rom right now, shows UMTS3 in status.
Nothing strange about that, it is in UMTS when data is idle, anything else is when data is active.
You only get 3G on T-Mobile if its a "re-farmed" 1900 MHz region, where they moved 3G from AWS to 1900 MHz. If you go outside your zone you will only have 2G.

What is HSPAP:15 considered? HSPA 15Mbps? Is that at 1700MHz or 1900Mhz?

You would have to go to field test mode to find out, Android does not have such details. Dial *#0011# and find at the very top "RRC: .. BandX," where X is a number. Is it 4 (AWS) or 2 (1900Mhz)?
There may be an item (radio dependant) called DC_HSPA to indicate whether its dual cell HSPA(+). Post a screenshot and I can check it for you.

Hmm, can you try this. I've tested it a bit on WIND and data/voice works...the data is slighly more stable/faster (still around 1.5 Mbps/50 Kbps for me)
http://speedy.sh/uyHBp/SGH-T989D-TLMC4-amss-from-blaze.zip
IT works for me on WIND, so it should work on T-Mobile. Same steps as in my previous post above to get it to see AWS carriers. If your T-Mobile service is 1900 MHz, it may just work without any of those steps.
Btw, for some reason it only sees WIND (the modem is non WIND specific) and no other AWS carriers (i.e Mobilicity) when set to WCDMA 1700. No idea why.

Tried it, signal strength went from 2 bars with stock modem to 4 bars, status shows UMTS3 when idle and switches to HSPAP:15 briefly.
Speed test
outside the house 7000kbps/1000kbps
Inside the house 1650kbps/66kbps
*#0011# shows rrc band 4, previously it was band 2.
*#2263# doesn't shows any item with * infront, previously automatic had * infront of it.
Tried setting wcdma to 1700 and saw the same performance, rrc band4 and switching between umts3 and hspap:15.
Havn't tested call quality but this has been the best modem so far.
Thanks for sharing.

Well I had to reflash for some reason it was picking up excellent speeds then poof gone .. tried changing back to 1900... nothing .. so I reflashed and just picked automatic

[Q] New to the note - help with T-Mobile

Hi everyone,
I'm new to the Note, but definitely not new to Android or XDA.
I've got the phone "unlocked" via the radio trick here: http://str8pt.blogspot.com/2013/06/unlock-simfree-method-for-galaxy-note.html
I've rooted it, and have tried a few different ROMs with different radios.
The Blaze radio (and others) I mention are from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1679722
I am in Melbourne, FL in case location makes any difference.
Here's what I am seeing:
CyanogenMOD 10.1.3 - using Blaze ICS radio I am getting only EDGE speeds. Using "Official TMO ICS Radio" (I'm guessing it's the one from the TMO Note?) , I get NO connectivity.
Stock 4.1.2 - using Blaze ICS radio I am getting 4G, however the signal meter is totally empty as if there's just enough signal to register connectivity but not enough to register a single bar. Download speeds are abysmal in comparison to other TMO phones I've used here - I am seeing downloads at around 1.5MB - other phones are 6, 7, even 8 MB.
My question are as follows:
Using CyanogenMod, should I be using the i717 version? Or the TMO Note version? Is there anything I can do with ANY particular radio to get better than EDGE?
Using the Stock ROM (or a variant), is there are a way to get the signal cluster to function properly? Any way to get better download speeds?
I read that the TMO 4.0.4 stock ROM image can be installed via ODIN and apparently it works correctly (if I am reading correctly) - would the TMO 4.1.2 stock ROM image be installed via ODIN and work as well? (If I can even find a full download of it?)
Should I expect to have to re-flash the radio each time with each ROM? From what I've seen, if I don't, I lose any ability to get 4G until I flash it again. I'd be stuck on EDGE.
Thanks so much guys! I've searched and read till my eyes are crossing and not finding the answers I need. I hope that with the experience that can be found in this forum maybe I can get where I need to be!
Thanks again!

I recently obtained an I717 too, unlocked it, and got it functioning with my tmobile prepaid plan. I'm still on gingerbread rom and using KID radio with decent success. just 4G , using WCDMA band 1700 (*#2263#). I get consistent decent speeds but not LTE.
The hands down best modem to use is UCMB4 - Google it. But it can cause problems with some jelly bean ROMs.
If you want jb more than anything, play with modems. If you want speed AND stability, go jellybean sandwich or black star X with the aforementioned modem.
If you want WiFi calling download skeleton key.
Ucmb4 with any of those three and the proper APN will get you LTE as fast as it's offered in your area

Hi Anthony820,
I'm currently running your Skeleton Key ROM - not bad at all! But definitely want to try to get CyanogenMod or PACman JB running.
I'll give the UCMB4 radio a shot this evening !
When I had service with TMO (via Straight Talk) I had the best luck with UVLG3.

Uvlg3, if I recall, will get you good down speed, but mediocre up. Otherwise, it's a solid choice and may be more cooperative with jb builds.

Looks like you're right - here's just 4 radios that I just tested:
UCMB4 - EDGE only
UVLG3 - 3G/DC(WTF??)/H+ 6.01Mbps up/1.07 Mbps down
UVLE1 - Phone freezes, locks on black screen, had to pull battery
ICSBLAZE - 3G/DC/H+ Network communication issues message when running speedtest.
By the way, what the heck is "DC" on the network indicator where 3G or H/H+ normally is? I've never seen that before!

By the way, just checked and CM's WiFi tethering is working as well - nice!
Not sure what I did differently this time but this evening the signal indicator is showing real signal strength, equivalent to what I was seeing on another phone on CM.

Make sure, I forget and my Note no longer has service, that the top option is set under Network Type or whatever it is. Network Mode? I don't know, you'll figure it out. The thing that lets you pick between GSM, WCDMA etc..etc..

Ok, I got it figured out. I am on the FAST APN and set to WCDMA/LTE . I'm on 3G/H+ here in the house now - will see how it goes when I head out tomorrow.
Either way, I think it's time to make a backup - it's running marvelously and doing everything I would expect it to!
NOTE: Newest PAC ROM (4.3) running smoothly with UVLG3 modem on T-Mobile without issue
[EDIT]
Scratch that - it worked great until I did the first reboot - then it wouldn't boot up again, even with a battery pull.

I went ahead and flashed UCMB4 and was showing 4g lte after reboot. my phone info setting says WCDMA preferred (it shows no LTE option at all ) and the *#2263# menu setting says "automatic". on the fast.t-mobile.com apn
I use UCMD3 and get LTE almost everywhere. Hellybean is a pretty good ROM, try it out!
