If you got that far, I suggest just going with QuikSense. Has a stock feel to it, just more memory and it's faster. Nice list of mods too. Working great for me. Past couple hours have been awesome.

Just say goodbye already! Haha. QuikSense has the stock feel, it's faster and doesn't have the useless crap. Do it up. Most of the apps that install from Market backup can be removed, like the T-Mobile apps if they auto copy over.
this should be in the general not development section.
anyways yeah flash quiksense. It's debloated stock, with enhancement in performance, battery life, and coolness.

Been running QSense for two days already and I like it but, still, some more apps that I'ld like to remove, though.
Using TB to frozed several apps like Peep, Twiter, Stocks, Tell HTC and so far so good. I'll removed them all after testing some more. I need to test frozen 'em one-by-one first to make sure before get rid of them for good

you can virtually remove all the obvious widgets and apps. Just don't touch any that may sound that it would be used by the system itself. Some apps for example wifi calling with FC like there's no tomorrow, but it would be fixed if you fixed permissions in recovery..
Actually i think you can remove anything that has a widget lol
I'm wondering myself what apps should I remove from the ROM. I would be grateful for any description of following apk files so that it would be easier for me to decide. I can't test it myself because I don't have Amaze 4G.

I hate to revive an old thread, but I just switched to stock and tried removing some bloat, and with the stock ROM being odexed, I've had some issues trying to remove apps. So now I'm stock again, fully unlocked, rooted, and full of bloatware.
Now the OP posted my SAME EXACT question, but to no surprise to THIS community, he didn't get much of a TRUE answer aside from the one I quoted. Now that we've all had this phone for a while, is there any updates from others who are running stock rooted on what is safe/unsafe to debloat?
Thanks everyone
PS... And can a mod please move this to Q&A or general... Doesn't belong in development.

Well I know that --IQ-tmobile-release-signed-zipaligned-v1.1.apk-- is Carrier IQ, so you probably would want to remove that. The thing is, I don't know how badly it will mess with your phone though. So remove it at your own risk.

Yeah, there are 2 files associated with carrieriq...one is an odex file I think...use root explorer to find it. Just type in ciq in the search box and it will show both files. Once you remove the apk, you will have to do a battery pull

Looking at that list I'd say I removed every one of those apps minus internet and magic smoke wallpapers so you should be good to remove them. The system manager app you listed is carrieriq and freezing it does nothing

You think I should leave internet, or it shouldn't matter since my apps that use data and/or browsing work fine with it frozen?

I'd prolly leave it. Make sure you do 'clear dalvik cache' from within tb after you've removed what you want. Save carrieriq (system manager) till the end because its gonna go into fc city once you uninstall it. Then pull the battery and reboot
Oh, and welcome back to stock
I know some rom's when signed into will bulk install previous apps and paid apps. My question is can that be done manually though adb or some sort of script. I think others have wondered this too. I haven't found an answer so thanks for any and all advice.

As long as you just restore the app and not data, you'll be fine. I don't even use TB except to uninstall stuff myself.

Not 100% clear on what you're attempting to accomplish. Since I'm not clear, I'll do my best to take a few guesses at what you could be asking.
I assume you're not referring to some ROMs which come *packaged* with apk files already.
Example, you have 20 apk files and you want to install them all at once? OR you have 20 apk files and respective data for them and want to install the apk and their data?
As far as I've seen, logging into the Google account which had settings backed up to it will only install the apk files and not retain the respective data for those apps.

By restoring just the app, this answer is referring to the first example I suggest and I completely agree from my own personal experience. Restoring just the apk file, *should* not have any issues.
This is making the assumption the apk is compatiable with the specific version of Androd OS being used on the device, but generally this is not an issue.
If you're interested in the technical details behind how the process works, I can give a few high level points.
The package manager for Android constantly monitors two locations, /system/app and /data/app. If an apk file is added or removed for either of these two directories, the package manager will automatically process it by either parsing the new apk file and adding it to the launcher or by removing it from the launcher and potentially uninstalling the associated data.
Off the top of my head, from adb shell which you mentioned a potential "script" process, the adb command is adb install c:\downloads\blah.apk and the uninstall command is adb uninstall com.joeykrim.appname .
If you're wanting to script inside android using bash/sh instead of outside android using the OS as I previously mentioned with adb, inside Android, I *think* it is pkg .. or pkmg .. I'm not clear on the exact command which prob shows how little I work with the package manager in Android.
Personally, I add and remove apks thru adb or manually copying the apk into one of the active directories and/or remove them manually by taking out the apk file from one of the active directories and removing the associated /data/data directory for the directory.
Hope that isn't tooo much and helps provide some more technical detail!

This is exactly what I want to happen. For the market to reinstall the APK files without the data. They're not all paid apps some are free and they would install automatically after a login. This hasn't occurred by itself in a while for me and I was wondering if there is a way to force it. I dont like having to use titanium and data usage from re downloading all the apps doesn't really bother me.
Sent from my GT-i9100 using Tapatalk
I've never done it, but aren't you able to sync all your apps to App brain and have it reload them?
Honestly, I always run a "sync all" through the accounts and sync section in the settings menu before I switch ROMs. As soon as I open the market and agree to the terms and conditions, it automatically redownloads all the apps I just previously had, both paid and free.
ok so then I have a ? too... if you don't restore data, and we're all flashaholics, how do you get your game data back. say you play paradise island or angry birds or any other long term game, do you start at level 1 each time you flash a new one?

this is a great question and unfortunately i personally dont play any of the games .. not really much time. thats more a personal issue though .. haha. as such, i cant speak from too much personal experience.
i have seen game data, specifically angry birds stored in a secure directory on the /sdcard before. also, if not using the sdcard, i also do remember seeing a specific separate "secure" mounted partition.
not sure if they still follow this practice, but i would look into the secure directories / mount points / sdcard and would go after backing up / restoring those.
the up side to this issue is all android device users who customize their devices with root access should face the issue of being able to backup/restore their game data. this point increases the likelihood of there being a good guide / resource is much higher as this is not an evo 3d specific issue.
i would be interested to see any results ppl find. please feel free to post back!
hope that helps!

Absolutely nothing lol. I back up apps and data with TB and I always restore everything. Did it going from Sense to MIUI, back to sense, and even for ICS. I have about 50 apps that TB backs up and restores for me, never had a single issue with any of them.
So long as you don't back up SYSTEM apps or data, you won't have any problems.
But, as always YMMV, this has just been my experience.
I have the apk for the 3.4.4 market. I froze the market updater but when I install the Market apk within 5 minutes it updates to play. Is there a way to prevent the upgrade?
What's the big deal with preventing the update? Looks like exactly the same market with a name change to me. Just wondering what I'm missing and in no way trying to be a jerk.
Sent from my ADR6400L using xda premium
You dont want to stop the update because if you do, you will not be able to get apps or update current apps with the old market.
Anything else that relies on the newer market will fail as well. I doubt you could stop it anyway..
Install an older version of the Market and use Titanium Backup to freeze the Market Updater...but there's no good reason to not update.
The new market is great! LOL, it is pretty much the same. The only difference if you have a tablet and that allowed you to purches music through the app. Again looks pretty much the same. New name

personally the name change is annoying as all hell, google quit trying to program your brand name in my brain, when i want to buy and app or something i want to go to the market or to the store, not go to the google and pick up a new app.
every-time i'm in a rush trying to pull something from the app market i can't find the bloody icon because i'm looking for the market or in the old location on my app drawer, minor change i know but i have caught myself cussing at google when i needed to re-d/l my gps app after it crashed during a trip i as on a few days ago.
any chance of renaming the new app back to market without root?
Just use a launcher and if already do, just change the name duh..lol that's what I did ....

I also would like to learn how to get around using Play. The new terms seem to allow Google to read my sms messages and record the message routing. I don't think my correspondents would appreciate having their thoughts being part of Google's repertoire.

What conspiracy theorist cooked that up?
The only way to get around using Google Play is to not use android. What you're asking is the equivalent of saying you want to use an iDevice without the app store.

Memory needs > any update
I have a very good reason for not wanting auto-upgrades. Radio Shack misled me about the HTC Wildfire S and now I've got jack for memory. I have four apps installed, use only the native message app, and I'm lucky to have 25mb free. Anything less than that and the phone works as well as the Pony Express does today.
FWIW, Tandybot told me I could always install apps on the SD card. In theory, yes, but so few app devs code apps to work in that manner. Lesson learned.
kite edit: SNIP! No need for that kind of attitude around here, I'm afraid.

hmmmm ok, well i saw that but skipped over it
because on all my other roms/including stock, i dont remember it being an app,it would just auto-connect
and it was always a system apk as well
let me go check it out though
It was excluded because CM10 has absolutely nothing to do with ATT. Or any phone for that matter. So unless somebody kangs CM10 and adds in an app, it's going to always be as bare bones Android as you can get.
Essentially, CM10 isn't ever a bloat removed version of any phones stock ROM, because it's build from aosp source, so the bloat was never there to begin with, and likely wouldn't be added in anyways.

I like that app as well. That wsa the only thing I didn't like about my ROM, so I did a nandroid, restored to stock, pulled that system app, and restored my nandroid.
Lucky for you and anyone else that wants it, I just happen to have placed it in my Dropbox.
Make sure to place it in /system/app (Don't install it like a normal APK) and change permissions to rw-r--r--
You will need to manually connect to attwifi the first time if you haven't already.

the system app one, like if you're at mcndonalds , will connect to it automatically (mcndonalds is one of the stores on ATnT wifi partnerships)
if you didnt have the app, you can still connect(its free wifi no password) but you would have to first open up a browers, read the agreement, and hit accept blah blah, before you can start using the wifi. again the system app skips all that and just connects you

It also skips all the payment info at some places that still charge for WiFi, so long as it's powered by AT&T. I wouldn't mind having this feature back as well, even though I'd rarely ever use it. Honestly, my cell is faster than the WiFi at any Starbucks or McDonalds around here. But I can see a use for it while traveling. Maybe download one of the stock ROM flashable zips and just extract the necessary apk, put it in /system/app and see if it will work that way. I'd try myself, but I'm a tad busy lately and already in trouble for all my downloading this month.
EDIT: Forgot to mention, the one on Play is too bloated. I don't want that junk handling all my WiFi.

Well, Mr. Useless Retort, I was searching for this very apk and was about to download it until I looked at his stats. You see, the fact that a post is a year old doesn't make a lot of difference if it has information you need. You see, Mr Useless, that's why the forum goes back many years.
Note that my reply wasn't intended for him, it was to warn off anybody else who might think about downloading this.
See how that works??
I think you can get this apk from the market, or what I do is google for apks -- especially older ones when the market updates me and the update sucks. I haven't been burned yet.

Googling for the apk is what brought me to this thread. I've never been burned with a download, either, but then I've never downloaded one from somebody with a single post.
So I want to speed up the process since I do get pretty busy in school. Let's create a list of safe to remove apps/files so I can have builds uploaded quicker and lighter! If I test everyone by myself, it'll take a while to do. So you guys tell me, what can be safely removed? Let's try to remove all the AT&T junk!
Remember, 99% of the stuff removed can be downloaded through the Market. You could also create a separate zip to allow people to install the apps that were removed. Just a thought...

I'm saying like bloatware. HTC apps, AT&T apps, etc. Some HTC apps can be removed safely while others can't.

Anything with AT&T on it can and should be removed. Just keep Beats audio in there, all I can tell you
Also, do we have an ETA on AT&T HOX+ CM10? Are there other AOSP-based ROMs in development for the One X+, particularly the AT&T version?
It would probably be easier to grab one of the international hox+ Roms that's been debloated and take a look to see what's missing to determine what can come out or at least use it as a base to know what can be removed....not a base to rom build though just to be clear

There's NEVER an ETA but here's one for you, expect CM10 before 2013 ;p

I dont know but I'm happy I'm seeing threads like this
Can we look at de-bloated At&t HOX ROMs to get an idea of what's safe to remove? Or at the very least, like someone else mentioned, we should compile a zip to have a safety net of sorts.
Also, I'm no expert but I'm more than willing to help test things and speed up our dev process. I should be getting my HOX+ middle of next week.

I've personally removed: stocks, fm radio, flickr, htc mail, htc mail widget, jetcet print, teeter, htc messenger, watch, play music, play books, polaris office, picasa and locations (ATT or HTC's pay GPS, sucks compared to google to me) from this phone. you can add those to your list of safely removable apps.
Another option for app removal..After all ATT stuff is removed.. some of the ATT HOX XL Rom devs (most rom devs actually) use an aroma script or installer before install which asks the user which apps they want to keep or remove. I never use stocks, fm radio, flickr, htc mail, htc messenger, etc, etc. Those are the first things i would personaly uninstall with titanium backup if there wasnt an aroma script. But there are plenty of people who use those apps everyday and couldnt live without them. With the aroma way you can make everyone happy. Which is hard to do in this business.. Everybody wants something different. Scotts Clean Rom for ATT hox has nice aroma features, might want to use parts of it as a template. Also i'm sure you've made some Rom dev friends over the years.. Hopefully some Sense ones Now would be a great time to hit em up for tips and tricks! They could tell you exactly which HTC apps can , should, and shouldnt be removed. Good luck with the Rom building... You seem very excited about it, thats good for us.
And here is a goody everyone on ATT will like. This is a must have app for me.ATT visual voicemail. Market says its not compatible and wont let you download it.. but it works great. transfer to sd card or download with phone, install from phone using a file explorer. make sure unknown sources is checked in security settings. I'll stick my sim card back in my HOX on monday and download the latest version of ATT VVM, this one says it needs updating, but wont let you. Still works great, no problems at all.

I just got my ATT HOX+ and I'm willing to help in whatever way I can. I personally removed all ATT stuff manually (in /system/app) and used Titanium Backup to get rid of BN Nook app and a few others. I'm admittedly not used to this bloatware as I've had a GNex for quite a while now. However, I wanted LTE speeds and had an upgrade available so here I am.
Currently, my phone is dev unlocked running twrp recovery (in the original dev section here on this forum) and I'm rooted (obviously, lol).
On another note, do you guys think we'll get our own forum? It seems like the ATT HOX+ is different enough to warrant it, at least to me.

I've sent messages to moderators and they've said they are aware of the issues. I'm sure it'll happen... Well i hope it'll happen. It really needs to happen. They are different devices. I hope it doesnt take a bunch of bricks to make them do it.

I also hope it doesnt mean devs will ignore the at&t version. If they could just put if the rom/tool is at&t compatible would work too.

I actually like the HTC mail but not so much the htc messenger. Maybe he can make an "ultra lite" Rom version in due time which is basically as naked as the stock Rom can get and allow people to install whatever they like and ALSO have a zip download of all the HTC stuff taken out for people like me that want say something like fm radio, HTC mail, etc type stuff to install if the user wanted to . I've seen many roms built this way and users basically love em!
Since you don't use the htc text messenger, what sms/mms app to u use? I configured and use go sms now and love it! Does everything the htc messenger can't and fully customizable! Love the quick sms pop up too from standby, was missing simple features like this from my iPhone. Not anymore

I use handcent messenger. i like it a lot better than stock messenger. The aroma installer would do away with the zip download. You choose what apps you want and dont want at the beginning of the install. No need for more than 1 version. No need for an ultra lite version when you can choose your own apps. Its almost like your own little rom kitchen. to take stuff out or add stuff. Add battery percent or a different style battery. Add blue icons or red. Use Android boot animation or ATT. Remove sense and add a different launcher. Many Many different things can be done with aroma. I'm not sure how hard or how easy it is to use in development, but it seems to be the way everyone is going. I think its great.
So I decided the first ROM will be senseless (Not AOSP. It'll have Sense stuff removed) and make it as slim as I possibly can. Want it to be a super light ROM so it can be customized as needed. Should I put Apex or Nova launcher?

We see how well the senseless rom went over. 2 pages and last post in august.
Your response when asked in the donation thread what your plans were.

Reason I said a Senseless ROM will be first is because I'm backing up all the files I removed. After I upload the Senseless, I just have to drop in the Sense files and bam, a Sense ROM is made! lol
EDIT: Also, isn't 2 ROMs better than 1? It will be something quick to slap up and if I modify one file from one ROM, I can just do the same mod to the other. It'll be easier to work with both side-by-side. Don't worry man. I got this!
Looking forward to flashing my first rom on this device. Light is fine, and whichever launcher you find lighter on the battery life.

No 2 is not better than 1 IMO. Aroma with a sensless option is the way to go. 1 rom to maintain.
Am also aware that this isnt going to be instant, you are learning to build roms. Aroma may be an advanced rom dev option, i dont know. I do know though that no one said they were looking forward to a senseless sense based rom in the donation thread. Almost everyone said they wanted a sense rom. :fingers-crossed: But ultimately it is your decision. Do what you gotta do. :highfive:
