I was reading up info on if its possible to backup your data before rooting, since I know rooting will erase it, and I ran into this:

I had no idea you could temp-root, and to be honest, at the moment, I just want to have root to perform a backup and remove some stock apps, not install a custom ROM or anything, but I have a few questions about this.
1. Whats with the section on clearing the temp root? Does it leave files on there even after the root is gone?
2. This temp root seems to be similar in theory to a theatered iphone jailbreak, but once I reboot my phone, does the root just go away and everything is back to normal, or do I have to use the SDK to boot my phone at all from then on? I am asking because of the clear temp root section.
3. Would a temp root cause any problems with future updates, or is there no way to know that?
4. Could I install an app that requires root access to work while temp rooted? I want to install Airblocker, but it needs root access. Do you only need root to install it, or would it stop working once I reboot and the root is gone?
5. The main reason I want to do this is to remove most of the stock apps Sprint installed that you cannot normally uninstall, will they just appear as uninstallable once rooted or do I have to use an app to remove them? And if so, what?
6. Do does this Titanium Backup basically create a copy of your entire current ROM so you can re-flash it and get your phone to exactly the state it was in when the backup was made, or does it only backup files and settings so you still need a working ROM and mostly the same apps installed in order to do a recovery? If one does flash a custom ROM, how can they recover their apps and all their settings (.... and videogame progress) to a different ROM?
That's cool, haven't seen that either. Looks nice!
1. All this does is return the original stock rom back to normal, just like it was freshly updated and turned on.
2. This being temp root, yes you will always have need of a computer after every reboot.
3. All rooting does is give access to folders previously locked. That being said, having access should not mess up an update, just do not CHANGE anything in those now accessible folders.
4. Most apps check for root access as soon as it runs, so yes, when rebooting you will have problems with root access.
5. You will have to use another app, titanium backup should do it, so should ROM toolbox.
6. Titanium takes the backup of the APK file and the data for that file. So, when reinstalling, it installs the apk first, then restores the data exactly as it was when it was backed up. It only backs ups apps, not the entire rom. You will need a recovery image to do this.
I recommend fully rooting your phone and switching to a re-analyzed stock rom, like mean rom or something, thats what I run. It has most of the stock apps removed and is fast as ****. When you make your backups before you root, just keep them there and restore them once you have a different rom.

I wanted to know if there was a way to remove apps such as MobiTv and other apps that came with the phone. Some are really pointless and just take up space. My device isnt rooted.
Yep you have to root it first then you can start removing apps.
I rooted mine using the instructions in the Developement area.
Used Root Explorer to creat a folder in your sdcard. Of course any app can do that.
I then used Titanium Backup and made a backup of everything.

Removing apps
Use titanium backup to uninstall the apps you don't want after you back them up.
if you select an app that you don't like in the list it will come up with a host of options, one will say un-install. this should remove it from the device.
and if you backed it up ahead of time, you can usually reinstall without an issue.
just don't remove twlauncher..

your phone is REQUIRED TO BE ROOTED to uninstall stock applications. It is not a choice, you have to do it if you want to remove them. It's a really simple process and takes less than 2 minutes to do. It's really hard to brick your device by rooting, its just too simple.
When you're rooted you can many options to do what you want to do:
- Root Explorer (Paid App)
- ADB (takes a while to setup the environment if you don't have it already set up)
... and the other methods that i didn't list.
i've really only used rom manager in the past, and now with the LTE i'm using Goo manager, and TWRP for a recovery. my question is, for those that want to try a new ROM, what is your procedure for backing up your ROM and apps, etc.? i ask because i flashed to viperROM, and backed it up via TWRP recovery, went to try another ROM out, and then wanted to reflash with the backup i had created, but wasn't sure where to find it to flash back. was it just a matter of not knowing what directory it had been saved into? also, when you make a backup (is it still referred to as nandroid?), do you have to use something like titanium for backup of apps and their data? i take it that's the case but wanted to be sure... maybe i need to do more searching for titanium backup i guess.
edit: just to add that i have used TB root in the past after flashing, only to find that things like some of the games etc. were as if it was a fresh install... no save game data. what's the proper way to ensure that apps are backed up with all of their associated data? or is that something that's more of a case by case/manual thing?

I am currently stock rooted, however I have downloaded and wish to flash ARHD Rom, but I don't want to have to re install everything from scratch I just want to be able to click "restore" and have all my apps and data back.

Because you are not rooted go this route. You do not require root.
1. Use the Helium app and copy the folder it creates onto your computer, it's called "CARBON." This will copy all apps and app data.
2. Use HTC Backup from the app store and backup everything onto dropbox. This will also backup your apps + data. It will be on a cloud storage so no need to push anything to anywhere.
3. Go into your SMS and hit the menu button. Backup all user text messaging. Copy to computer.
now you can report everything to anything.
After you are on your new ROM.
1. Run HTC Backup (comes with rom) and restore everything.
2. Use Helium to restore any missing apps.
3. Restore SMS.
Done.

I am rooted, what I'm really wondering now is if I can restore the data portion of my nandroid backup after flashing the new rom or if that will result in a bunch of FC's?

Use Titanium Backup and it can grab apps from a nandroid backup and restore them. navigate for this feature through the options menu.

Yes, you can flash a clean Rom then restore your data file from a previous backup. the only problem with that is that whatever problems you may have had before, may be present still. Otherwise, it doesn't hurt anything. In fact, both CWM and TWRP allow advanced restore where you can select portions of your back up to restore..one a time. In my opinion, it allows you to see, if a backup fails to restore, where exactly it is having trouble, be it in system, boot, data..etc. I literally just did this, restoring a data backup onto a clean Rom, and so far no issues. I understand what you mean by not wanting to set everything back up. System settings, widgets and app placements. You had the perfect setup and it took you forever to get it that way. Titanium backup and Rom Toolbox don't always restore these things like they claim to do.
Edit: I am finding the hard way with this phone, that unlike my old LG Mytouch, when you flash a firmware upgrade, non OTA push I mean, it doesn't stick to system. It's saved to data. So if you flash a data file from a backup with an older version, your back to that version. With my old phone, we could swap Roms after an update all day, and the baseband and firmware updates would stick every time.
i want to root my desire X, i want to know what all i need to do in order to take a full system backup to restore it again (if ever required for updates etc.), & also which Recovery is best for JB, i don't want to install any custom rom, i need root to run some apps....

1. Sync your Account to Google.
2. Install the 30 days trial of https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rerware.android.MyBackup&hl=en then after Rooting you can use Titanium Backup Free or Pro.
TWRP is good for JB.

thanks for helping, it worked, one more question, do I need to take a complete backup (data+ system+ boot) everytime I flash a zip so that if anything goes wrong, I can restore, & also how can I remove a zip which I flashed, for eg. I flashed Xperia launcher, but its buggy, how can I remove it? I tried uninstalling it with Titanium backup but it shows up again after restart..

Its good to take Backups!
To remove Flashed Zips, Edit the Updater Script in the zip file and add the rm or rmdir command for the files that were added.
Check which all files were added and where. Remove them manually or use the updater script method I said above.
Hi. I'm having issues with the battery life on my OPX and I would like to try some stuff. However, my OPX is my daily driver and i'd like to have real backups that can help me get back to business quickly if I make a mistake.
One such this is to try to turn off Google Services/Backup. However, how do I back up my app settings, then? How do people who go around testing ROMs and Kernels do it? Do they just blow away everything every time?
I'd also like to try other kernels, maybe even using a kernel manager, but I need root for that. After rooting, how can I update to the next OOS 3.x release? I'm on OOS 3.x, and for now I only want to be on OOS 3.x (no custom ROMs if I can avoid them), updating only when OnePlus releases a security update.

Your best choice is magisk manager,install magisk and root with systemless root,follow their official thread for procedures, if u done everything properly, u ll hv root access and u ll not face any problem while getting sys updates.
Helium backup? I prefer titanium backup(requires root) it ll work properly
Another simple method,Take a full backup in twrp before playing with ur mobile,root it using twrp,install xposed watever, and when if opx get nxt update,u can install it manually from twrp..jst as simple and restore previously backedup data..

OK, installed Magisk, rooted and tried again.
MyBackup failed twice to finish a backup, once it just reset while in the background, the other failed almost on the last app with "Not enough space" (SD Card still has 50GB+ available...)
Titanium Backup is refusing to backup to the SD card. When I try to select the SD card as a backup storage it won't allow me to create a new folder or select an existing folder. A rooted app refusing to write to the SD Card? Are you sh*tting me?
Now I have installed systemless Xposed for Magisk and ”Marshmallow SD fix" module. Apps still can't write to the SD card
