Hey guys, I'm new to this forum and rooting in general and I've been having a bit of trouble. I've read a ton of tutorials on how to root Galaxy S2's but I'm still struggling to get my head around it all so I was wondering if I gave people the appropriate details if you could point me in a direction of a easy to follow tutorial that will work with my phone.
Model: GT-I9100
Version: 2.3.5
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-I9100BOKK1-CL511356 [email protected] #2
Build: GINGERBREAD.BOKK1
Also I installed KIES yesterday and ran it today but it says it doesn't recognise my device so that's a bit puzzling.
Thanks in advance.
KK1 is the only one GB version for which neither CF-root nor insecure kernel available for rooting, better you flash another GB ROM from stock ROM link of my signature search for XWLA2,
and find CF-root link for find matching CF-root to Root
Before you do anything, check the sticker under your battery on the chassis of the phone to ensure you have an I9100 or I9100T.
Once you've done that, CFRoot thread. Pay particular attention to the bit that says " Help ! Which file do I use ?"
Reconmended for noobs
you should use zergrush or GingerBreak so that you dont end up with a yellow triangle, its as easy as 1 click
press thx if i helped
Thanks for the help guys. Cabloomi will zergrush work on my phone because I was reading around and people were saying it wouldn't work anymore? Sorry if I have a lot of questions but I don't really want to F up my phone lol.
there are many ways for rooting, but most followed and success way is CF-root
after rooting with other method your second thread will be asking how to flash a CWM take the answer now itself : CF-root and avoid your second thread
Yeah it will work on anything under 2.3.5 and if it doesnt just use gingerbreak

You said this "KK1 is the only one GB version for which neither CF-root nor insecure kernel available for rooting, better you flash another GB ROM from stock ROM link of my signature search for XWLA2," earlier in the thread which I don't understand at all, could you explain more please? Does it mean I can't use CF-root because there isn't a way to do it for KK1 or what? Sorry I'm very new to this lol.
From the CFRoot thread "If there's no match...try finding the closest match." I did say read that section carefully.
CF-root is a stock kernel of the ROM in which root & CWM inserted , the devoloper (chainfire) made this for almost all the Samsung firmware kernel version available, we only need to pick matching one to our Kernel version.
But we dont know why the KK1 firmware is not leaked from samsung, it is not available in the sammobile.com also...
but you can follow the following word of the devoloper:
The XX and OXA identifiers are not that important. Usually a "KG1" kernel is a "KG1" kernel, and that is that. Sometimes (pretty rare) it happens there will be multiple different kernels with the same name in different firmwares, that are actually different. If this happens, they are usually only very minor changes and you should expect them to still be fully compatible. I include the "XX" and "OXA" identifiers so the very advanced users can deduce from which full firmware I have taken the kernel file.
"Don't worry too much, just find the matching download and use it. What if there is no matching download ? You can ask me to make one, but I can tell you right now, I very very rarely make CF-Root's for kernels on request, unless it is the very latest kernel that has been released by Samsung. In the latter case, be sure to let me know. If there's no match and I'm not making one, try finding the closest match. You should treat "KG1" as a number, but instead of 1-9, we have 1-9, A-Z (where A would be 10, and Z would be 35). "KG2" is really close to "KG1", "KF1" is not close to "KG1" at all. I hope that makes sense."
following the above you can try with KK2
which is available in the thread, http://download.chainfire.eu/53/CF-Root/SGS2/CF-Root-SGS2_XW_XEN_KK2-v5.0-CWM5.zip
Thank you ever so much guys, I done it and it works perfectly now. I did all this just so I could tweak my phone a bit. You guys don't happen to know any tweaks and what not to make the phone faster/smoother/ etc?
Yep. Read. Research. There are no shortcuts.
FASTEST WAY TO DO ALL THOSE IS JUST TO INSTALL A CUSTOM ROM, I RECOMMEND MIUI, THE LINK IS AVAILABLE IN MY SIGNATURE AND HERE IS THE TUTORIAL VIDEO, DONT FORGET TO SAY THX

got my phone a few months ago, rooted it and all went fine fine.. Then something inside the phone broke down so no 3g connection at all.. Send it to be repaired and now i got it back with a new wierd kernel version.. Cant seem to find anywhere to root this kernel.. Any help would be appreciatet since i cant use half my programs at the moment..
Kernel name is the one in the title:
2.6.35.7-I9100XWKDG-CL174368 [email protected] #2
Ive read another post with someone who got the same problem and was told there should be a XWKDG kernel in chainfires post.. nothing shows if i search the thread.. ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399 )
plz help.. -Wyxx
KDG is old firmware there seems to no CWM and root might find one near on the defunct root thread .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056334
Personally i would upgrade firmware to a later one then root .

thanks mate.. was able to update it to a stock KF4 .. so now rooting should be a walk in the park..
so more or less problem solved at the moment.

It is easy to do - even I can do it.
Yes it does look confusing, but that is just because the author took time to write out ever step so idiots like me could do it without problems.
Well flashing firmware looks easy but iam confused about rooting, i just want stock kernals. In the official guide that intratech made,he wrote that u can use either ChainFire's or Odia's insecure kernels but can't i just root the stock 1 right away?
The instructions I used were * HERE *
I used ODIN 1.85 - * HERE * - which I suppose would have made little or no difference.
The insecure kernels I got from * HERE * - again, which I suppose would have made little or no difference.

Help! Which file do I use ?
Listen closely, for I will say zis only once!
Go to Settings -> About phone -> Kernel Version. Note the string present there:
2.6.35.7-I9100XXKG1-CL349526
What matters most (KG1) in this case, is in bold. Try to find the matching file under downloads:
CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KG1-v4.1-CWM4.zip
The XX and OXA identifiers are not that important. Usually a "KG1" kernel is a "KG1" kernel, and that is that. Hey all,
I'm a beginner in this rooting society, moving over from jailbreak development on iOS. I am wondering how I would be able to root a Galaxy S2 with model/kernel number ZSKF4 running 2.3.3.
Not sure if this is the proper place to put this, but I've searched everywhere and no place is providing an insecure/original rom for rooting with this kernel number on the file name.
Can somebody help me?
Many thanks,
Nicholas
UPDATE: Anyone know how to root ZSKI2 running on 2.3.5?
Root + CWM .

Read the post in regard to versions /kernel matching first .

Thank for your reply.
Many guides like the one you gave me, requires kernel matching first, but really, I'm entirely lost in this matching process. Can you give me some heads up on what to choose using my specs I list below?
My Galaxy S II:
Model Number: GT-I9100
Android Version: 2.3.3
Baseband Version: I9100XXKE4
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-I9100ZSKF4-CL280225
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.ZSKF4
If you can help me, I will be very grateful.
Thanks a lot!
Nicholas

You want then a KF4 kernel from post 5 .
jje
This one from post 4 should do it: CF-Root-SGS2_ZS_OZS_KF4-v4.0-CWM4.zip
You have a HK/Taiwan phone? If you install Kies you should be able to upgrade to the official ZSKG2. Although that is still 2.3.3 so not much difference there.
Yes, I have a HK/Taiwan phone,
Thanks guys,
So if I have ZSKF4 right now, I'll use "CF-Root-SGS2_ZS_OZS_KF4-v4.0-CWM4.zip"?
If I upgraded to the latest ZSKG2, will there be any difference comparing to ZSKF4? because you said its the same 2.3.3.
Okay, well after looking at the instructions, I got a little freaked out of how long it actually is, and was pretty worried if I do this, I would get a triangle at boot because I'm using Custom Kernel? Also I heard that many people don't want to use CF-Root because there's a higher risk of bricking comparing to SuperOneClick that I used to root my Galaxy Tab 7. So, I checked on something else.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125414
Thats a one click rooting app for the S2, but what is this "Flashing an Insecure Kernel" and how do I get this kernel for either ZSKF4 or ZSKG2? I prefer the most easiest way so that I wouldn't run into a huge risk of bricking this device. Thanks for all the help on CF-Root above, but would you guys happen to know what exactly is going on in this link?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1101671
That contains all the insecure kernels for the S2 one click rooting application. Which one do I choose if I have ZSKF4 or ZSKG2?
Thank you everyone for helping me,
Nicholas
Rooting with CF-Root is very easy, just start up Odin, click the boxes like it says in the instructions, and it's done in less than a minute. You can use the other method, but if I were you I would just go with CF-Root because 1) so many people have done it and 2) at least you know one person (me) who did it on their HK/Taiwan phone and came out fine (and I was a complete root noob at the time).
I think whether you upgrade to ZSKG2 first depends on why you want to root. If you are rooting so that you can install a custom ROM, then no need to upgrade to ZSKG2. Just root your phone and install the new ROM and you're good to go.
But if you want to keep the Samsung firmware and only rooting so that you can run certain apps or do certain mods, then upgrade to ZSKG2 through Kies first, then root. There is nothing really bad about the Samsung firmware. I run Cognition 1.5.1 + SpeedMod, but it's mostly just for the fun of it. I don't do anything on it that I couldn't do with rooted 2.3.3 Samsung firmware.
And yes, you do get the bright yellow triangle at startup. There are ways to remove it, but I haven't tried. I like the triangle, it's like a little badge of honor for power users.
Yeah, I'm only rooting for just certain apps that require root/superuser requirements. Other than that, I won't put a load of mods on.
So, if I go to Kies, upgrade to ZSKG2, then I begin rooting, would I be using:
CF-Root-SGS2_ZS_OZS_KG2-v4.1-CWM4.zip
But the thing that scares me is that it says "ZS_OZS_KG2: Untested", does that mean it would be risky to do it?
Hey just noticed in the General forum that the official ZSKI2 is out - and its version 2.3.5 to boot. Check it out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1281717
Yeah the "untested" means the author did not try it personally (can't really expect him to test every kernel from every region). I used it and it worked fine -- that's all I can really say.
Oh wow, that looks pretty cool....
I'm sure I can update to that, which I will, but, does this mean I have to wait for another rooting procedure?
I have a crazy "OCD" that I have to always stay up to date haha. So yeah, if I do this, logically if the CF-Root is able to root it, I will have to wait for a person to make the ZSKI2 kernel insecure version?
Actually, okay, when I upgrade to ZSKI2 kernel, which "CF-Root-SGS2_ZS_OZS_KG2-v4.1-CWM4.zip" do I use? I don't see a ZSKI2 kernel anywhere...and I'm assuming I can still use CF Root to root at 2.3.5?
You can use a version that is close -- in this case I think XX_OXA_KI3 is the best match. It will probably work with the ZSKI3 firmware -- but I have not tried. (Sorry I mistyped the name in my earlier post, it is ZSKI3 and not ZSKI2.) If you want to be safe then yes you will need to wait until there is a rooted ZSKI3 kernel that you can use.
If you plan to install a custom ROM, then it does not matter what kernel you use for root, since the custom ROM will generally come with its own rooted kernel and it will replace whatever you had before.
For some reason, Kies isn't letting me update.
It says: "This version of this device cannot be updated"
Do you know why this is happening?
By the way, I noticed when I plug in my phone to Kies, I see under CSC, in brackets are (KOR). What does this mean and does it affect any rooting?
UPDATE: I know what KOR means, it means it's a Korean region based device. Is there any difference to what I may be able to update to in Kies or any rooting differences?
Hey XDA-people,
Im sorry to say this, but I am a really low noob.
I want to make my first root with my samsung galaxy s2, because I am german, i follow the german instructions, but i have a problem. I dont want to do any mistakes so its better I ask you instead of destroying my phone. Bevore you be angry, i searched for my problem but couldnt find any answers.
the problem:
I have android 2.3.5
my basicbandversion is : I9100BOKJ1
but my Kernel-version is: 2.6.35.7-I9100BOKK1-CL511356 [email protected] #2
my buildnumber is: GINGERBREAD.BOKK1
Im not sure if I can use any CF-kernel-root file ( my problem is the android version )
I found some explanations that there is no cf-kernel root file for KK1, and especially not for android 2.3.5
If there are some files, please sent me the links.
If not would I thank you a lot, if you could write some alternatives, if possible without risks. I really want to avoid any errors.
Thank you ,
robhood

thank you for answers
No.
That section says to use the closest match if there's no exact match. Now, you're currently running KK1, right ? And there is no KK1 CFRoot kernel.
Sooo...Using the closest match to what you currently have, look at the list of kernels in the CFRoot thread & tell me which one you think you should use.

As you are on 2.3.5 firmware you can still use the very easy way (no flash, no Odin, no triangle, no counter): DooMLoRD Easy Rooting Toolkit (zergRush exploit):

Hello everyone.
I am the noob in the video when you create a new account. And I do want to apologize for burdening you with my problems, and also let you know that i appreciate a lot your help. I am still in shock how much info this forum has.
Now to get started and keep it short.
Got a galaxy S2 from 3 UK
with the help of a friend i changed the stock software ( the rom i think) and unlocked it. but i always wondered if the new OS release is better than what i have now.
so, here are the stats i know how to give ( if more are needed, please call me a noob and tell me where to get them )
Model : T-I9100
Android v: 2.3.4
Baseband: I9100XXKH3
Kernel V : 2.6.35.7 -I9100XXKH3-CL479037
Build No : GINGERBREAD.XXKH3
Also I need to tell you that from what i gather from my friend he used this website to get the tools and instructions to do everything.
The phone is rooted (if I didn't say that already). I have:
CWM Manager v2.0
Current Kernel: CF-Root 4.1
Superuser app - not sure if i should write something more
and the rest of the apps are not related.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
What I would like to achieve (on top of learning more - been reading them tutorials and slang and how to's)
It will take me a while to learn how to do stuff on my own, been using the search button, I know how you guys insist on that . A LOT of the tutorials are about how to go from stock, just wondering if from already rooted is any different. Should I root again, when is the rooting part coming, etc.
And also without practice or trying myself I would never learn, or it would take me a long time.
I very much like the cyanogenmod, although I would also like to see some alternatives. The differences and/or the improvements the other mods bring explained in laymen terms (or easier ones, although i don't think i'll find that).
And here I get confused. As for firmware, does cyanogenmod have a kernel or do i install that separately. Don't understand the connection between CF-ROOT, XXKH, Kernel and ROM. What I'm trying to say is that i can't make the connection between this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278 and the cyanogenmod. I am looking for a good Kernel/Rom combination. Any advice, I really need your help here.
And as a last note, brand new installed kies with troubleshooting and reinstalled drivers, won't read my phone, although i'm pretty sure i'll search the forum and solve this problem fast.
Also if possible, I would like only LINKS, to how to's and tutorials; although I would appreciate your help any way it comes, I'd like to read myslef, as it is a better way for me to retain information. If you can point me to a thread i can find info that i skipped over would be brilliant.
Thank you first for taking the time to read all this, even if you can't/don't want to help me, I appreciate you giving me time, something you can't take back, very grateful for that. Apologies for my broken English and awkward writing style.

Well that is due to you not reading the FAQS and GUIDES .
Kernel is the bit between OS and hardware .
Rom is the full firmware package of kernel modem and OS .
Kernels are in the DEV section .
Combo is up to you read look learn try are the XDA rules .
Whats best rom kernel posts are banned this is a developers forum you are required to do some work .

Understood. Will follow your advice.
Before installling ROM + Kernel + Radio. Advice sought
Right, so after a couple of days reading up on stuff, I have decided to go for it. So before I actually install something I want to post here what I've decided on and ask your opinion on it.
At the moment I have:
Android: 4.0.4
BaseBard: XXKH3
Kernel: 3.0.30 - NETCHIP -some more numbers and stuff
Build Number: IMM76I
Mod Version : HyDrOG3n - ICS -more numbers
--------------------------------------------------------
And I decided to install:
Radio: XXKE7-Rev_02 (as I read a lot of people were pleased with it, so i want to try it)
And here i have a question: I've downloaded 1 that has 4.7 MB, and a MD5 that has 12 MB. Any help to understand the difference would be appreciated.
ROM: Insanity II ICS 070 - from his official thread I also got the missing fonts and sound pack.
Kernel: Here is where I had most problems being a noob and all.
I was planning on getting Hellcat's Root Kernel v1.25. But here is where i get lost. And believe me i tried to read on it and understand it.
Kernel version must be compatible with ICS rom? That's how I understand it.
Kernel A - Only for GB
Kernel B - Only for ICS
(where A and B are different versions or something, can't figure this one out)
So at the end I would have: Radio XXKE7 + Insanity II ROM + Hellcat's Root Kernel.
Is this a viable combo? Any opinions.
I UNDERSTAND THERE ARE NO SUCH THING AS BEST ONES. I am only trying to find out if anyone tried this combo before and how did they like it.
PS: Although I don't understand Kernels yet, I take any kernel on this forum and then pick every technology they have and google it each one at a time. That's my method of understanding what stuff do. If you can recommend a better one, PLEASE PLEASE DO
PPS:I am really sorry for the long post and the wrong title, I changed my mind, this forum is mind numbing vast and exciting and complex, and I am just a little noob discovering the biggest candy in the phone department.
Thank you all for the time to read this, and thank you in advance for your help
EDIT: I would also like to try [ROM][XWLP9]★ Dynamic v1.4 ★[ICS][Slim][Performance & Battery life][25April] in case the Insanity II is not compatible. But if I'm honest I would like to try it anyway, when i fancy a change in the future.
If this :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182922&highlight=hellcats+kernel
is the kernel you are talking about, it will not work with the ICS rom. Checking the kernel thread, it does not show its for ICS, but just GB.

Are good options for kernels, but there are more so check it out. You just have to make sure the kernel is compatible with AOSP. Speedmod kernel would have also been a good option, but that is for samsung roms only, not AOSP like Insanity II ICS.
Would you like us to stand beside you next time you take a leak & shake it for you when you're done ?
I.E. Experiment. Try stuff out. As long as you can read/follow instructions you shouldn't brick your phone. If you need to run what you're going to try by anyone on here you're probably in the wrong place.

I have people to do that already, they watch me take a leak and shake it. To make sure I don't shake more than three times. We all know that if you shake more than 3 times you're playing with it.
But what I asked is no different than when people release a new kernel/rom/etc, and 3-4-5-6 posts after that are questions on how it works.
I did not ask for the best combo or something like that. I asked if anyone tried that combo. Granted i screwed it up since I wasn't aware of the compatibility thing. I will check now the compatibility between roms and kernels, although sometimes for a noob like me its not that easy to tell with all the acronyms and versions and numbers. If my posts bothered you soo much, ignore it and you'll be a happy bugger

But that is failure to read the guides and understand and a fail to read the change logs for the different bits .
You would be far better off gaining basic understanding by just flashing a few custom roms rather than attempt to build your own version .Following the rom threads instructions for add ons different kernels etc.
Modem KE7 is very old for starters looks like you have read a few bits from varying places someone says thats good and are attempting to build a mixed up rom with non compatible parts ..

Although KE7 is very old still it emerges as one of the top modems...
recently I tested it with many ICS roms versions, and currently using, very battery friendly, stable and fastest 3g data download compare to latest Modems came with ICS versions.
