I know this is a question which has been asked over and over....
I did not realize what is the different of unlock and root until I unlocked my prime with the official tool.
I only unlocked it. I did neither root it nor change anything else in it.
would it still available to perform OTA? I have receive different answers from different website, some say yes, some say no. Does anyone know the answer for sure?
Also, since I saw there are rom downloads available on asus official website, will I be able to upgrade my prime OS manually?

No, you wont be able to receive OTA updates, nor should you install an official ASUS file, it will brick your device.
If you flash a custom ROM, chances are you have features in that ROM that aren't available in the OTA releases anyway. Still, if you want the latest from ASUS, many devs usually have a ROM based on the current ASUS firmware out within a day or two.

also, what is the benefit of a user to upgrade their os version? I feel the benefit when i unlock my phone , but also realized that these mods also have problems such like battery runs out fast. is there a good rom out there you would recommend?

I have never seen a clear answer on this question. What exactly will prevent us from running an official update on our phones. When LG releases the official gingerbread update, what will prevent us from doing that?
1) Rooting.
2) OCing/tweaking/hardware acceleration.
3) Installing custom roms.
If we have only rooted can we update, or would we somehow need to flash our phones back to stock settings? I suppose the development community will take the official LG gingerbread rom, tweak it a bit, and release it for us to use with our rooted and OC'd phones, so maybe it's not a big deal?
Any advice?

So if I have my LG Optimus T rooted, and have a rom installed like cyanogenmod, I can then just download and installed the official 2.3 upgrade from LG/Tmobile?

I've never tried to install a stock rom, and with the HTC magic I had read people talking about not being able to install the stock rogers rom without a lot of trouble.
I also heard some issues with certain phones having OTA updates and conflicting with rooted phones.
I just wanted to make sure this was ok. I have cyanogenmod on my HTC magic, sorry for the confusion, so I just used that name for a generic rom. I just meant in general if you can update a hacked/rooted phone without it locking up.
Jailbroken ipod touches and phones cannot be updated using the stock updates that are released over itunes, you have to do a factory reset before going and installing the official updates.

In this case - Custom ROMs - HTC now sucks. HTC still trying disable for their users installation of custom ROMs even if many people just love this possibilities.
LG (for now) doesn't do that.

Idk where you got this from... especially when hTC is one of the few companies still posting info on how to fix your phone after you root it, also if you are friends with them on facebook they make posts about leaked roms and they say they dont recommend installing but they still show you where its at. Motorola did try to make it impossible to root the droid 2/x/pro but ppl found a way around that, i believe it was koush.
I don't believe any manufacturer spends a great deal of time trying to prevent root, now carriers like sprint and verizon, yes. They don't want you doing wireless tether and things like that.
I have this from root.cz but it is in czech language.
They talking about problems of rooting and updating of system on new HTCs phones, like for example Tatoo. They have HW lock on their NAND ROM, so getting of root is not as simple as was before and so on.

I have been looking over many threads on how to update to JellyBean and have not come to the decision of whether I should update at the current moment or wait. The reason I feel uncomfortable with updating is that I soft bricked my prime when I did the .21 to .28 update, all due to my human error of not triple checking over myself. Thankfully I have superior knowledge of the android system because I have been using Android since the G1 days (yup I am not a noob, but neither am I an expert in these things, you can say that I am an intermediate power user). Fortunately I was able to unbrick using multiple methods and abd tricks that I found on these threads, and I truly thank everyone of the big guys out there for helping out though my difficult time. Although I had alot of fun in that ordeal, I surely DO NOT WANT TO GO OVER THAT HARDSHIP AGAIN (sorry but I have been emotionally scared for life).
Although it may seem that this post is question oriented I would like to note that it is mostly a plead for an update method suited for my particular setup.
On to the details:
At the current moment my prime is being used as a daily driver. It is my college life all bundled in to one awesome device.
Android version 4.0.3 ICS
It is rooted
it has IML74. US_epad-9.4.2.28.2-20120529 build
stock to the root <----get it.... its a joke
It has latest superuser
it has been backed up
Voodoo OTA root keeper shows 100%
The device is NOT UNLOCKED, it does not say that it is unlocked on start-up, ITS LOCKED
It has CWM 5.5.0.4
My first method of rooting was done though vipermods exploits
Last time I updated I just flashed the proper/suitable stock .28 build that I have now through CWM
At the current moment everything works wonderfully and I love this device.BUT I am afraid of bricking it...I have had bad dreams....BAD BAD NIGHTMARES....
So the question is...I mean comment...(sorry if this does not belong on here)...
What would be a best update method for my current setup

More info....
Before my .28 update with sparky's rom i had the .21 vipermod exploit....i had flashed cwm and updated my rom from the previous .18, and even before that i had root through vipermods initial root method.
I know my bootloader is locked, but how than is it posible for me to flash roms for unlocked bootloaders. The sparky rom that i flashed is supposedly for unlocked bootloaders.
I am sooooo confused....i dont want to brick my prime again.

HOW I BRICKED IT BEFORE:
so i was on .21 and wanted to update to latest .28 build
I manually downloaded the stock.28 rom from asus website
I updated through icon on bottom right hand area...you know
All was going well then boooooom i got soft bricked with a bootloop
Did the popular unbrick method through abd then i found sparkys rom.
Flashed sparkys rom through cwm (i uploaded the rom through this abd command file mover thing i found on another xda forum whiles in cwm)
Flashed and installed perfectly
Ok now what should i do....unlock my device and twrp recovery it or whatever its called and then go from there?
Or just wait....i dont know where to start...and frankly i am very displeased with the amount of clarity out of the top guides out there....and all i see is a plethora of bricked devices...sad face...

Weired issue...i heard about perfectly unlocked primes, about primes with locked bootloader "forever" (like my device), but never heard anything about an invisible unlock after softbrick...
Maybe somebody can figure out where "the magic" happened...

ok simple answer: I unlocked device...I think through a vipermod primetime release that had it...i think v4 unlock tool don't remember
was on .11 then on .18 then to .21 now on .28
did root with vipermod, and installed cwm in .18 or .21 dont remember
got bricked when i manually updated to .28 from download from asus site
think that there is a method of binging back primes that are bricked
using quick abd pusher...thats what i used in cwm to get sparky's rom on prime and flashed
now working

The Long Story
Hi all
I am sure the above question has been asked about a thousand times but here goes (MODS move this thread to correct thread if in the wrong place)
I have owned an Asus TF201 since about March, bought brand new from ebuyer.com, as i was new to android back then i didn't dare root it or unlock the bootloader in case i voided my warranty etc.
Since then my Prime has received all its updates via OTA and the current build is 10.4.2.15 on JB 4.1.1, it has never been rooted or bootload unlocked, it is in pristine unmodified condition.
In the mean time i got a Samsung Galaxy S3 and having played around with that got brave, i rooted it using CF Root method which automatically installed CMW Recovery and then proceeded to flash the Wanamlite ROM and have been happy with it since.
I am now looking to install a custom ROM on my PRIME it but have come across the fact that its not as easy or straight forward as the S3
Firstly, as its never been bootloader unlocked, rooted or modified in anyway shape or form it might be a bit tougher.
I have stumbled upon the fact that to install a custom rom, i need TWRP or CWM (or both (not sure)) installed which needs it to be rooted and in order to root i need to unlock the bootloader.
I have googled high and low on XDA, youtube and while they all point to an official Asus Bootloader unlocker, the Asus website claims that this is for ICS only (i'm on JB now in case you missed it), also a lot of the info out there is out of date since Asus has made changes.
So my question is as follows:
How do i unlock the bootloader? Everyone keeps mentioning an official Asus unlocker but its says for ICS ONLY and how do i run it
How do i root? - is there something like CF Root which was for the SGS3
Once i have the above do i then use TWRP or CWM or both to install a custom ROM?
I am aware that unlocking the bootloader voids warranty, i am aware that installing a custom ROM increases the binary counter, i am ware that bricking is possible (but lets try and minimize that), i am aware of those as i was warned about them from general research on wanting to do this and from modifying my S3.
Basically to use a custom rom on this device you download the unlocker tool from Asus (Says ICS only but works on JB, know from experience. Did it myself). It is an application and all you do is connect to the internet and run it. Once unlocked you can flash TWRP/root your device. Use either the guide on their website or go on youtube and look at some videos. There are step by step guides that show it all on video. Once you have TWRP you can head over to the dev section for the TF201 and download one of the custom roms (Hairybean 1.4 is supposed to drop soon, I'd suggest that one) and use the in-thread guide to flash it.
My #1 tip to you is read. read, and read it again. Understand it all and then proceed. Asking questions before you flash is better than doing it wrong and posting in the thread saying you bricked your prime then the OP/devs have to help you through the unbrick process. Questions are almost always answered quickly and in a friendly manner. Hope I helped

This is exactly what i mean, all the information is fragmented all over, not just on XDA but also on other Android /TF201 forums, in some places its clearer in others a bit obscure or vague or worse out of date since them Asus c**ks keep changing stuff
The Galaxy S3 Dev forums are far clearer and have step by step guides on how to do this, personally i hate watching them youtube videos whilst they are trying to help and plus points for the effort they put in, a lot of the people doing it just waffle in them and i still prefer the old fashion of step by step guides.
I learned how to go from stock S3 to Wanamlite ROM all in one evening and it was quick and painless.
But thanks for your help regarding using the Asus official tool for ICS works for JB, might now try it tomorrow or the day after.

I got confused there for a minute but you are talking about Androwook 2.1 and not Androwook Hairybean 2.1.
By the Android version number you are still on ICS.
I would highly advise that you go thru the nvflash process first as you can only do it while on ICS and it makes you brick proof.
Once you have done that you just have to follow the instructions in the Hairybean thread for 2.2 which will upgrade your bootloader and recovery and then flash the rom.
I'd wait a week tho as 2.3 is due soon.

Androwook was based off ICS. When it switched to Jellybean it became Androwook HairyBean.
nvflash is definitely worth it mate. There are people on here who would kill to go back to ICS so they could nvflash backup

My query is somewhat related, and apologies before it it has previously been addressed in another thread, so I won't start a new thread for my related query.
I have just purchased an ex-display model Asus EeePad Prime here in the UK on eBay for about the third of the price as a new one. So far, all seems to be working and running fine, dongleless Wi-Fi included, but I have a question.
As soon as I turned on Wi-Fi and connected with my router, my Asus Prime started 'automatically' downloading what I assume is (the latest) firmware, I couldn't find a way to cancel the download (no user-manual, unfortunately), so I immediately turned off Wi-Fi, as I have no idea what version firmware my Prime is downloading. Right at the moment, it's running stock 4.0.3, but I don't want it downloading some firmware that I may regret at some point later. So, may I ask, is it advisable to let the firmware download and do its thang, or wait for another, different or better firmware. I am totally new to using tablets and my only other Android device is a Samsung Galaxy S3 running JB 4.1.2,
Without reading through an online manual (probably a fruitless exercise anyway) or wading though hundreds of forum posts, would one of you more experienced in firmware than I, be good enough to advise me about which is the best, most stable firmware I should be running on my Asus Prime, as well as how to disable automatic firmware updates (I couldn't find an option for that in the settings yet), and any more cautionary steps I should be advised to take before I mess up or brick my new tablet....OR point me to a thread that already has the answers to my questions here?
I'm finding this a bit frustrating, as obviously, I can't use Wi-Fi for anything else until I have an answer as to how to stop automatic downloading of firmware via Wi-Fi.....help?!?

You are still on ICS and at the moment you can make nvflash backups that will make you completely brickproof. It will also allow you to go back to ICS from jellybean if you wanted to which people without the backups cannot do.
I would highly advise that you make these backups before upgrading anything.
You will need an unlocked bootloader to be able to do nvflash.

Oddly, the automatic firmware update OTA download has (thankfully) stalled/stopped/stuck at 23% and I have no idea what I did to stop it downloading or even how. Anyone got a clue to help me figure it out? All other downloads via Wi-Fi are working as they should.
But, saying the firmware download has stopped, is there any way that anyone knows off to cancel/delete the 23% of it that has been automatically downloaded and taking up valuable space on my internal memory, please? (I'm guessing I'd need to root my Prime to do that?)
One last important (important to me anway lol), question.....is it advisable or not to make those nvflash backups before of after rooting my ICS 4.0.3 firmware (I was thinking of using 'Viper' to root it, or maybe you guys can suggest a better application to use?), or won't rooting it before I've made those backups make any difference? I own a Fire HDX 7 with FW 13.3.2.7. I've also been away for a about a month and have recently been looking through numerous posts around here since then but haven't found a newer answer. Is it still not possible rollback and unlock the bootloader and install a custom rom like CyanogenMod, or am I only still limited to only safe-strap and Nexus?
If it's still not possible, what is the reason that 3.2.6 can be downgraded, what is the difference between .6 and .7/8 that makes this not viable.
If anyone has an idea of how to make it work I am willing to try with my device, I'm just not sure what the community needs to be able to make this change work.
Lastly, if I sent in my Fire HDX for a replacement, does anyone know if the replacement will come with 4.5 or a lower 13.x.x.x version? I just can't stand the lack of OTG support, only a 16GB HD, and would love to music/games on USB stick or use a gamepad.

Sorry but I still don't think OTG support is available yet be even with the given roms right now. And the new one may be a long shot to have lower firmware. May have more luck asking for a downgrade like some have said they have done.
You can't downgrade from 3.2.7/3.2.8. Either via hack or request to Amazon. At present your options are limited to 1) rooting, disabling OTA and living with native ROM + sideloaded Gapps; or 2) installing Safestrap and the Nexus ROM described elsewhere. TWRP is not an option with 3.2.7 which rules out CM11 and other ROMs...at least for now. OTG support is not available as it has been disabled at the HW level (as I understand it). If you need that look for another device.

Thanks for the reply, I already got downgraded from 4.5 to 13.3.2.7, but sadly you can't rollback 3.2.7 to a version that the bootloader is unlockable. And since Amazon has already rolled it back once the fuse has been blown, and from my understanding they can't downgrade it any further once they blow the fuse.
I am thinking of just trying to get them to send me a replacement and hope it comes with an un-upgraded version. Has anyone gotten a replacement recently and know what version they will ship it with?
From what I've read around the reason we aren't able to roll back 13.3.2.7 is because the .bin (?) deletes itself and no ones been able to capture it? I have Linux running on my kindle also, so if someone who knows more about the OS than me wants to help me to to capture the file via linux running inside the FireOS in a 'man in the middle' type setup let me know what needs to be done.
I'm willing to help, unless most of the devs have moved on away from this device.
Edit: Just saw your reply Davey126, thanks for clearing up a couple of my questions, my offer to still help finding a 3.2.7 workaround still stands though.
