[Q] SGS 2 won't start Strange battery icon - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
my SGS 2 will not start anymore. It displays a strange battery indicator (the waiting one, and then loading indicator) on the display when off. It does not boot up.
I got it to boot with the key combination to boot into recovery. But only on charger and with around 30 tries.
The phone works without problems. The only thing which you can see when booted is that the charging symbol in the status bar does not go away and the battery stats always tell that your phone is just unplugged for some seconds.
Is this a hardware defect? battery destroyed? Tried a second one. Same problem. But used external charging station for both batteries. Maybe this could have destroyed it.
But now using original charger does not change anything. Everytime I switch it off it is just bootable with that strange key combination on a charger.
I did not see these bug description before in the internet.
The phone is rooted with ICS Custom ROM. But no problems with that the time before.
Please help me.
Michael

Using odin flash stock ics firmware

Your charging port is short-circuited. If you repeatedly twist your charging port when the charger is connected, e.g. sleeping on your phone by accident because it's on your bed with you, leaving it in the couch and sitting on it when on charger, it will get damaged and short-circuit. Now you need maintenance. Flashing will not help. A way of cleaning the charging pins will help clear the port.

Galaxy S2 don't turn off but reboot!help!

hello...i hope that someone can help me....when i try to turn off the device,it shut down and after few seconds reboot?why?
also simetime the phone don't turn on and on screen i see a green battery with a thermo....someon can help me?
Did you find the answer to this? i am sending my SGS2 back for replacement. i have the same errors plus the following.
Phone selects speaker rather than earpiece as default for incoming/outgoing calls
Phone on ocasions randomly starts Kies and Voice commands even if there is no physical contact with the phone
sometimes the phone defaults back to a launcher i have never seen before (it is not touchwiz) and i have no idea how to launch it without it doing it automatically.
The faults you mentioned can be bypassed with a battery pull but they are annoying, I didn't have these problems until i upgraded my firmware through Kies to KE7.
I have an O2 branded device.

same issues to me... I'm trying to fix it flashing a stock rom without good results yet In the meantime I'm waiting for a USB jig from ebay before to send it to technical service
I have a I9100M(BELL) flashed with cognition 1.32 with same problem.
Randomly my phone will:
-go into driving mode
-answer calls in speaker phone mode
-start alarm clock
-think its charging when the cable is not plugged in
-Reboot it self/turn it self on when its off
-wont connect to computer or charge even when cable is plugged in.
I need to send it in for repairs what should i flash? there is no bell branded firmwares or roms.

Exactly the same to me
How do you flash congnition? just over the stock rom with odin?
did you flash modem?
Absolutely same here, since coming from CM7 to VillainRom.
Never had that before.
I´m waiting and watching it and your results!
Thanks for this thread.

This has nothing to do with root access.
I cannot believe that any problem related just because you have access to your system.
Back to topic, flashed back to cm but problem persists.
It's getting really bad near to flashing stock and bring it back to change device if someone knows what it is could be helpful.
I also have this problem. I think it has something to do with the usb port.
Because sometimes it just scans for media, or it thinks it is charging. Really weird! Then i just put in the charger and it stops for a while. Turning off will just reboot the device. And removing battery and plugging it back it also just reboots the phone.
I hope it is not hardware related...
I was looking for help for a problem I have but this seems to cover most of the problems I'm having.
Mine has recently started going into a strange mode after shutting it down. I get the battery charging symbol alternating with the "battery overheating" symbol.
The only way to stop it is to remove the battery for at least a couple of hours (if you put it straight back in it automaticly starts up and goes back to flashing the battery warnings) or pressing Power, Vol+ and Home and choosing Reboot.
I have also noticed its very slow to respond to plugging the charger in or out. It doesn't always wake-up and bleep when the charger is put in and it stays showing its charging for some time after the charger has been removed.
I was told that the charger should be removed as soon as charging is compleated but surely overnight is the only time we have available to charge these phones!
Depending on the custom rom or kernel you are using, it might not support off mode charging.
To avoid having a "problem" with charging the phone in off mode, some developers decided to make the phone boot up when the phone is been charged when the phone is off.
Going back to an official stock ROM fixes this problem.

As for Cyanogen, since built 23, you can charge the phone when it is in the "off" state. Please wipe out your userdata partition before flashing. Do not restore from a previous backup.
I fixed my reboot problem (rebooting instead of turning off) by letting the battery drain all the way so it couldn't boot anymore. Tried turning it on to see if it really doesn't go on anymore. After that I plugged in the charger and I got the charging-symbol and it did not turn on so I kept it charging overnight while turned off and in the morning it was finished and turned it on.
I also cleaned the usb-port on the phone with a toothpick. It had alot of dust stuck in it which I couldn't see. After that no more problems...for now. They haven't returned for 2 days now.

What kernel and rom are you using? I have not seen the battery overheating symbol on the sgs2.
No, there is no need to remove the phone from charger, when the phone gets to what is considered full, the battery will stop charging by itself.
Are you using the original samsung charger that came with the phone, or are you using a after market charger? Most of these USB chargers do not send a signal on the data lines. When using these chargers, the phone becomes laggy and unresponsive, there is also a delay to register anything on the touch screen. Stay away from these chargers.
For lithium batteries just charge it whenever you feel like it. Lithium batteries have a few thousand deep charge cycles, meaning if you use up all the power, then charge it,you use 1 deep charge cycle. However, if you use the micro cycles for charging, you can charge the batteries a few million times. Leaving the battery on empty for too long will damage the lithium battery.
Can any one confirm if this is a hardware or software issue as i now have the problem when i try and switch the phone off it will just reboot?
The Same issue occurs in my sgs2
hi everybody,
i just got my sgs2 ten days ago
everything seems good at first
then i realized screen standby lock lag problem, there exist a lag between 1 second to 2.5 seconds.
i ignore that due to it cannot be named as a problem, it seems like a bad characteristic
then yesterday , i have faced with another problem
after i have docked the phone to the original vehicle dock kit,
phone cannot be closed via power button , i hold it 1.5 seconds then chose turn off among list, phone looks like to be turned off then after a little while it just vibrates and reboots. That is phone cannot be turned off, it s somehow turn itself on again.
Whats the reason of this problem ?
In another forum one faced with the same problem said that it turned out to be normal when the battery is erased but the problem is occured again after docking.
micro usb connector
I droped my phone in the water, got it alive again, but with all the error(overheat battery symbol, no stable usb connection, reboot when i power off, 100% charged not going away) replaced the micro usb connector with a new one.
Some problems are gone but i still can't connect to pc (kies, debug etc), poweroff problem still happen sometime.
Conclusion: It is not only the usb part of the phone that are causing this problem.
But I do belive its a hardware problem.
Have you phone maybe got to much to drink too..
usb port???
I've recently been experiencing the same problem
When I turned off my phone it switched on again!
And removing battery and plugging it back it also just reboots the phone.
Sometimes the USB connector and charger are confused
Do solved the problem by changing the USB port?
plz help me
Thank you in advance for helping me
This is definately a hardware issue. Clean the usb connector, failing that it will need replacing

Galaxy s2 charging port problem

For the last week now when ever I charge the phone and unplug it it is still showing as charging do I just need to factory reset the phone or is the phone in need of repair cheers
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
also when pulling battery and re inserting i get a yellow triangle with exclamation mark and a temp gage what does that mean ?
I have a similar problem.
No matter what charger I use, the phone randomly switches between charging and non-charging state.
Is this a problem with software or the port.
Just to clarify, I can hold the phone upside down, hanging from the charging cable, or wiggle the charger and it will continue to charge. The above error is just random. This leads me to believe it is a software or battery problem.
well after flashing back to o2 ke7 all is well again so must of been software related
Mine makes the plug and unplug sound randomly, sometimes it wakes me up at night and its not plugged in.

This happens to mine too. I'm on the stock unbranded firmware and haven't rooted our updated. This problem randomly appeared about a month ago.
I've just started seeing this problem now in the past few days.
When I unplug the charger, either the battery charging icon stays on, or the "Battery full, unplug charger" notification stays there.
The big problem is if I turn off the phone. After shutdown, the screen stays on showing two different icons (changes between them every few seconds). One icon is a battery half full or so, the other is an empty battery with a yellow triangle and a icon of a thermometer next to it.
When this happens, I can't turn on the phone. The only way I can turn on the phone when this happens is to plug in the charger, start up, then remove the charger again.
I'm on rooted KG2, XWKDD kernel. Bit worried about this, I'll try another ROM & kernel but I don't think it's software related?
It is discussed in this thread:

Cleaning USB port and in some times bending USB PCB downwards solves the problem.

Galaxy s2 car mode and charging port issue - resolved
HI,
I have been facing this issue with my galaxy s2.(When i have created samsung account and install Darky ROM 2 - XXKH3 ROM)
Issue:
1)Activation of CARD mode - automatically.
2)Charging automatically- though charger is not connected
3)Enabling the voice mode - automatically.
4)Battery draining problem.
5)auto handsfree speaker enabling
Solution:
There are two solution for the above problems:
1)Assume its not related to hardware (My case), i have wipe all the data(Using Darky Rom 2 tool), problem seems to occur even then.
I have updated the ROM to XXKG3_ODEXED. - that totally solved the problem.
I m using my S2 now for a week...no issue.
2)Assume its related to Hardware issue, (in some case's), you can clean the charging port by using thinner( nail polish remover - easy to get and cheap).
First u have to remove the battery, (preferably in direct sun light), use cotton to soak thinner, apply it on inner side of the port. keep the phone as it is for 20 minutes.(30 would be great).
Insert the battery, power on the phone.....problem solved.
I have tested it on 2 S2's, one with software problem and one with hardware issue.
Hope that will help....

Hello, i had the similar error. I had to send the phone to Samsung. Let see what happens....
same problem here..100 % same issue...what to do...this is pathetic
Same problem here, just after a month of having the phone started the problems. The five problems darshangkolhe said, but also: auto power-on of the phone when I switch it off, and what it is more annoying, it is very difficult to get detected by Kies when it is plugged to the PC. Sometimes it only starts charging and others nothing, not even charging the phone.
I am very dissapointed with Samsung, I have paid 500€ for what was supposed to be one of the best phones, but just after a month of use it is going crazy!!
I am bringing it to the Samsung´s technical support this week.
Take a toothbrush and brush the Micro-USB port vigorously. Fixed.
Having the same problem, fixed doing the above. This phone was awesome. But it just looks so much like its a big rush job with all the bugs that were there. The screen coloring. Now the USB-port.
Meh.. wondering about that 5 phone..
Thanks prodygee, but I´ve already tried with a cotton bud with a bit of alcohol and no luck. I will try to get my phone fixed by the technical support or replaced.
I can not think about the 5 phone, I have spent 500€ not even 2 months ago, so for me another phone is not affordable.
I just want my Galaxy S2 to work as expected, it is not a low-cost mobile!
mine has been fine since, but today it has started doing it again so its booked in for repair at CPW,technician states he has all the parts so will do it while i wait

[Q] Galaxy s 2 Battery/USB Problem?

So.. I have googled the crap out of this problem and seen loads of issues raised, but nothing solved.
I am coming from a Dell Streak and grabbed me a galaxy s 2 from craigslist a couple months back.
It has been running fine and I have tried a few roms/kernels and a few days ago I got the following error:
When charged to 100%, I get the notification to unplug, when I do, it sticks. No big deal but even when the phone battery has dropped to around 80% it stays.
It does not go into MTP mode or think it is plugged in via USB. Although, before this problem originated, the phone continuously vibrated between charging and not, when not plugged in.
I have calibrated the battery, tried a mixture of roms/kernels and I am now on unrooted stock. The problem still occurs and sometimes it does not recognise a USB connection, like today.
Probably worth mentioning that when turning on (and not plugged in) the phone does not turn right on, just boots into the battery screen and flashes between the battery charging and the overheating symbol.
Anyone got any ideas?

Turn off the phone and put it on charging. Once it beeps that its fully charged, quickly unplug the battery for 5-10 minutes. Should work and 'recalibrate' your battery

Do you need root to calibrate though? I am on stock firmware and not in front of a windows machine to use ODIN.

OK, charged to 100% and got the full notification.
Left battery out for 10 mins and whacked it back in.

Booted into the samsung recovery and I can boot into android from there.
Battery says it is as 88, cannot calibrate as I do not have root atm.

Get root and use the battery calibration tool from the market. The best idea so far. I suggest rooting with CF-Root, its fast and easy - its basically still your stock kernel but just with root.
If you really need the warranty or you'r scared of root you can install cf-root, calibrate the battery, then re-flash a stock kernel (unroot)

If i helped you, press thanks. Thanks.
Done and done.
Calibrated, even bought a new battery. Tried various other roms and appears to be an issue. Phone knows when USB is plugged in but does not seem to recognise the unplugging of the charger. And stays at 100% for a while before dropping down to like 80.
One thing to note is that this seemed to happen around the time of buying a dock for the samsung from Amazon, by Kidigi. I plugged the phone in to the dock without a USB cable connected to the dock and the dock LED lit up, making the phone think it was charging. Is this likely to have caused it/messed up the micro usb forever?
Thanks again guys!
well i think ive figured out what the problem was
Its due to overcharging or keeping the charger connected after battrey is full which has caused a hardware damage
im not sure if this is true but this is the closest explanation i can get the phone shows connected to charger even when diconnected only when i keep it connected for long time even after its battrey is full my usb connection has completely stopped working

well that the same problem with me when it shows connected to charger at 100% i restart it then the phone drops to ~80% battery although its 100% which makes the app battery monitor widget think i have a 1977mah battery while i have the standard 1650mah battery this must be the extra 20% which disappeared after the restart for me
I thought it may have been an overcharging problem, although no other phone I have owned has had this problem.
I let the battery charge all the way down (it stayed at 1% for about 3 hours) until it shut itself off. I left it on the side and it created a clicking noise, it was trying to turn the phone on as it knew the battery was in, even though it was depleted.
I plugged it in via USB to charge and it tried to turn on straight away. Shut it down and charged by plug until the 100% notification then turned on.
Still the same problem but one of my battery widgets warned that the battery was over voltage for a while before calming down.
If the phone cannot be off with the battery in, what could be causing that?

It has been known to be caused by a defective circuit board for the USB connector.
So, it needs a samsung return, I assume?
i have the same problem with overheating and usb plugged when there is nothing connected

i will try to put a new battery and see if it work and after post a reply

[SOLVED] SGS2 doesn't charge.

Appearantly my SGS2 doesn't charge, when I connect it to the wall charger it boots up, shows that the battery is at 0% and shuts down after about a minute. Than it repeats it the process over and over again.
Any ideas?
* Solution: MicroUSB pins were dirty, cleaned and the phone charges.

Nothing, completely stock.
I am having the same issue. Wont charge, battery icon shows up for about 5 secs than flickers off - then repeats that every minute or so. It also gets really hot. Have tried different chargers, cleaning the contacts etc but nothing works.
It wont enter recovery or download mode either
If you are running pure stock ROM+Kernel then it sounds like a mechanical fault. Try and order a new battery in the first instance and see if that solves it. Otherwise take it back and get it replaced by the manufacturer.
It is common for this to occur when the battery has been drained past its safety net.
Leave it doing that charge loop on and off. It will stop after some time.
This a warning that you need to stop letting your battery go to 0%
Don't be lazy, charge your phone when it needs to be charged.

Just clean your micro USB port on the phone. When it's dirty it makes pins short circuits... You can use an ear swab + alcohol.
I'll need to try cleaning that microSD slot, I bought new battery, phone powers up but now it doesn't charge at all.
I plug it in, nothing happens. Any ideas?

Im not sure how I can clean the microSD slot with simply an ear swap since its such a small thing, but I cleaned it as good as I could, not I shows black screen with yellow triangle and exclamation mark.
I tried the new battery, the phone powers up, shows its charging but still stays at 0% and reboots continuesly..
* EDIT! The triangle vanished and the phone is now charging! Special thanks to radkor! It was just a dirty microUSB slot.
If you can't charge the battery using the usb slot then you could buy a standalone battery charger off ebay... This won't help if there is more problems than just the charging though.... But its fairly cheap and you now have an extra oem battery for a spare...
The phone charges now properly but both the battery go empty in less than 10hrs even though I've got Juice Defender and BatterSave mode on, also it reboots continuesly when I make a call, I think I might have another problem on my hand..

Won't turn on

I recently picked up this galaxy s6 edge from a friend that upgraded to a new phone. It won't turn on, neither to android recovery, nor to download mode nor the android. I charged it via wireless charging overnight and i tried for around an hour with a usb cable. What do i do?
same issue i am facing, i tried original charger, wireless charger and fast chargers from many different brands. but all failed. The device only gets warm/hot while charging and nothing happens. neither download mode nor recovery mode works. I am kind pf stuck without any solution, my device was used very rarely and its like an brand new device. Doesn't know what to do, if you find any solution then please let me know too. thanks in advance
Same problem. If I press power button very long, blue light comes on. Then it's stuck and stays like this until battery is flat. Battery charging is not possible: device heats up (tried USB and Qi), but battery doesn't take any charge.
So I opened the S6 and checked the battery directly. I can charge it directly with a lab power supply and when I plug it in and press power button, the blue notification light comes on again until battery is empty again. I can also see that only ICs get hot, but not the battery when plugging in USB.
So, it's definitely some hardware fault. I suspect power IC that is not able to power up the screen. But I don't know. I will investigate further but it looks difficult. However, I have seen many YouTube videos with same symptoms, but problem was always different than mine :/
Hi guys,
This thread is 2 months old, any of you managed to fix the problem?
I am having very similar problem. My phone was on a shelf for about a year and a half. Before now it was working perfectly. Now I can't charge it via USB or power adapter. When trying to power it up or get into download or recovery mode, nothing happens. Computer does not see it. Tried different cables, USB ports, power adapters..nothing.
The only thing that is happening to the phone is the battery logo appears when trying to charge it, though the green bar does not go over battery, only the empty grey battery with lightning icon in the middle. Also the screen does not go dark after a few seconds as it should and the red/blue LED does not turn on.
Is this the signal from the phone, that the battery is to deeply dischareged and cannot be charged again? I am googling all over the web and can't find anybody talking about what phone does in case of to low voltage on battery.
PS back does not seem to be bloated, USB port was working perfectly last time used
Please try to help, you are my last stop before opening the phone and start probing the poop out of motherboard to see what gave.
EDIT: something interesting happened just about an hour after my post. The battery suddenly started showing % of charge and the green bar started running, computer recognized the phone.. as everything should be.
My FIX: leave the phone pluged in and charging for about 3days and it will start working again.
My semi professional explenation of fix and problem: the phone has a ''backup or reserve'' battery. It is actually main battery but the last I think I read somewhere it is 20% of capacity, is reserved for phone exclusively for the clock and all other electronics that need power when switched off. Now these 20% probably were discharged due to laying around for almost 2 years.
It took me 3 days of charging to fill up these ''20%'' I guess. Probably because Lithium batteries are charged VERY slow at very start and end. This is safty procedure for ALL Li batteries.
If any expert can confirm my conclusion please do so, to help other people.
To answer partialy to my question: The phone tells you battery is ''deep'' discharged when you only see the charge icon without the green bar.
In the mean time I was writing this edit I came up to 4% battery and turned it on!
