Ok well I finally decided to unlock the bootloader now that we have S-off. Anyway, so I started the process and I got to the point where I am trying to root the phone. I run the one click script and it goes through the process and says it completes and that I am perm rooted, but up above that there are a bunch of errors about the file system not being read/write or something along those lines so it is not installed busybox or super user, etc.
What am I doing wrong?
Nevermind, I think I figured it out. I didn't realize you could install su from Amon Ra.
I had the same problem. Even after I reflashed from Recovery. I had to flash the binary zip from the su site

If you're wanting to unlock or root, hasoon2000 All-In-One Toolkit works great. The only thing you will need to remember is that after you are done, you may need to go back into recovery and flash the newest superuser binary.zip to gain successful root.

no, it works for the previous firmware. 2.0.1 and up one click does not work.
It worked for me on the new firmware leak right after flashed while still stock and unrooted. All I had to do was flash the updated binary.zip file from the superuser site afterwards followed by flashing superuser from amon ra recovery. Took me a while to realize I needed to update the binary though, otherwise the all in one works fine.

Hey everybody, so I installed Amon Ra 3.15 on my Rezound running ICS 4.0.3 and I'm having issues with superuser. Whenever I restart my phone, superuser gets deleted. I guess a bigger problem is that when superuser was installed and I tried to use WiFi tether, it never worked. I installed su and superuser through Amon Ra, but I guess it didn't take. So now I have no superuser app on my phone and I'm not even sure if I'm rooted. I'm running just stock ICS 4.0.3 with Amon Ra 3.15. Can anybody tell me how to fix this issue or get "real" root access so I can run a tethering app please? Thank you!

That was the very first thing I did when I installed Amon Ra and it's never worked properly. Superuser app would delete itself after every restart and apps like WiFi tether never worked even when superuser was installed. In WiFi tether the settings were: Galaxy Nexus LTE, Netd, and enable route fixing.
Should I just try reinstalling Amon Ra? Will that even work?

I had similar issues when I updated to ICS firmware.....not sure why. So I used Hasoon's All in One Tool Kit to install it. Worked! I later figured out that flashing the zip file wasn't working for me and that instead I should have updated using the PH98IMG file of amon ra......not sure if you tried them.

So how I installed AmonRa was through Terminal on my Mac. I ran "./fastboot flash recovery recovery-ra-vigor-3.15-gnm.img" from the computer. I didn't drop any files onto the root of the SD card. Is this not the proper way to install the AmonRa?
The "recovery-ra-vigor-3.15-gnm.img" file is the only file I have related to AmonRa.
The All-In-One toolkit doesn't work for me b/c I use a Mac.
Can somebody please give me proper instructions on how to install AmonRa is the way I did it was incorrect? I'm brand new to Android, but I managed to get ICS on my Rezound and what I thought was the proper way to install AmonRa. ICS 4.0.3 is working fine, but I just want to get root access to use WiFi tether. That's the only thing I want to do. Any help would be so greatly appreciated. Step-by-step directions would be SO helpful. THANKS!!!!
Wait I'm realizing your problem is not amon RA but SU. Are you s on or s off? Did you just upgrade firmware? Because that would make a difference in your root permanently sticking.
Edit: You might be losing root....as I'm not sure exactly what the makeup of your phone is. Try the tool kit and install amon ra and flash su in recovery.
Unfortunately if your recovery is not permanent you have to this again after updating rom, ruu, etc. Someone correct me if I'm wrong ..I've been s off since we got it so I might be off a bit. Again s off and s on makes a difference. Nor sure what you have.
Edit to he edit: I see you are using a Mac.....again are you s off or a s on? That amon ra file is not going to work for you.
Try the ph98img file here..

That should have worked. You can always flash the new file in the earlier post. After, do like you did with SU...then flash this file here (in recovery):
https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B28uLCcMCyfRazVzMDRmWUxQcVU
Ctrl-S to download the thing as a zip file.
I believe it updates the binaries. It worked for me several times. You can download Su from the market, too.

Yeah sounds like you lost root.....since your s-on and you ruu, you have to regain root again. Have you tried flashing in recovery the file from Topgun's above link and post?
You just might have to just redo the root instructions (installing SU), NOT bootloader, through your MAC.....assuming that's how you initially unlocked and rooted. Again I had similar issues so I used the All in one tool kit, which you can't use on a MAC.
Sorry if I can't be of any other help.....but try using the MAC, if you haven't done so already. And then S-Off!

How do I flash in recovery? I know that sounds stupid but I'm still confused about terminology. Does flashing in recovery mean dropping the file on the root of the card and then going into hboot? OR is it putting the phone into hboot and then flashing the file from Terminal? If I do it through terminal what is the coding language? "Fastboot flash recovery"? I'm so confused. Thanks for all the help thus far. I think just a little more help and I can get it. Thanks for being patient everybody.

I would just flash a custom rom like conrom v6. It will fix your super user issues. Flash in recovery means you boot into your recovery(amon ra) and flash the zip(it can be on external or phone)

Flashing in recovery....your file is on the SD Card...not a ph98img.zip file...you flash roms in recovery, for example. But how? Get into recovery (amon ra) select navigate through the flash zip options..(can't remember exact verbiage) select file and you're on!
Flashing in hboot/bootloader...your file is on the SD Card and is name ph98img.zip. The bootloader scans for any files named, thus, and if so, asks if you want to run it or boot (that's why you delete or rename ph98img files when done with them).
Using Fastboot...boot into the bootloader and select fastboot..then you can enter commands from your computer. Fastboot flash [partition] [filename] . A quick google search turns up the commands you might need. At least, that what I do. Hopefully this helps some!
Did you ever flash that file I mentioned up above...flash 'in recovery'

Last question, but do I have to flash this zip every time I restart my phone? I'm trying to figure out why the root didn't stick in the first place and what I need to do to prevent losing root. I don't use any custom ROM's, just use the stock ICS that was in 3.14.605.11. Not upgrading to .12 until I know it can be rooted.
Also, I am trying to find a ROM that gets rid of the VZW bloatware, but leaves as much stock ICS as possible. Looking through the Developer section at the list of ROM's there, they don't have many pictures of what the ROM looks like on the phone. So I'm hesitant to go through them all to see which is closest to stock ICS. If you guys know of any I'd appreciate those recommendations also. Sorry for being such a noob about all this stuff, but a man has to start somewhere.
I've just updated to ICS via OTA, unlocked, flashed amonra, installed su from amonra (rooted).
Titanium Backup cannot get root rights.
Superuser (3.1.3) shows outdated binary (3.0.3). When I click "check for updates" and then Update, it downloads new binary, but then says "Gaining root access... fail!"
What's wrong? Am I really rooted?
Please help!

im running AmonRa v3.15 ...when i booted up after OTA Flash (i had no root or AmonRa recovery), i downloaded an Explorer app so i could remove the PH98IMG.zip. then i proceeded to unlock the bootloader via HTCDev, flash AmonRa via CMD, then i tried flashing SU via developer menu but no go, so then i flashed the SU that i had on my SDcard (Posted in previous comment) and WALAAA i had root. then i proceeded to Update SU via its app.. no problems so far.

I had the same exact issue when I updated my wife's phone and I've been stumped ever since. Of course, I only now stumbled on this thread. :silly:
When I installed the OTA update on my phone...I immediately decided to S-OFF and installed ViperRez. I have no issues.
When I installed the OTA update on my wife's phone...I stayed S-ON and installed ViperRez. I then got the same message in Titanium Backup and none of ViperTweaks work. Everything else works great...but any "root-involved" operations won't. I installed BusyBox...that didn't work either. I updated Superuser...that didn't work. I think I even installed SuperSU...which didn't do a thing. I then tried OneClickRoot_1.1, which actually said it successfully perm rooted...but it still didn't work. I'll definitely try to flash Superuser when she gets home though. I was afraid I was going to have to redo everything.
I found THIS POST over on one of the other threads on ICS problems and it worked perfectly. I now have Superuser installed, did the update, and I am rooted.
Ugh...still not working for me.
First I flashed Superuser 3.1.3 in AmonRa. The AOSP lockscreen and some of the custom text all suddenly changed. Yet Titanium Backup still wouldn't get root. I then flashed 3.0.7. and it still wouldn't work. I then updated Superuser and Titanium Backup (reinstall) and I still can't get root in Titanium Backup and the ViperTweaks locks up whenever it wants to restart the phone or restart Sense. I also tried the script from the previous post, and that didn't work. This is my wife's phone by the way...she's on OTA ICS, S-ON, and on ViperRez.
I'm at a loss for what to do next....
just try TWRP then user the super user from google market
Thank you...but unfortunately, that didn't work either. Titanium still won't work and root checker says it's not rooted. Superuser installed perfectly though...really weird.:crying:
Can someone help me root this phone?
I unlocked it via HTC method and I even flashed a recovery. But when the phone boots up, I am unable to use any super user permissions. So, I download root check and it says I am not rooted. What am I doing wrong?

Months ago I used HTCDev to unlock and flashed TWRP recovery and su-2.3.6.3.zip from this tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1239821
I was underwhelmed with the MIUI ROM and got curious about Sprint's ICS update, so I relocked the bootloader and ran the 2.17 RUU.exe, then updated to 2.89 OTA. After that I could use my original HTCDev Unlock_code.bin to unlock the bootloader, but su-2.3.6.3 would not give me proper root access (verified with Root Checker app). Thankfully downloading Superuser-3.1.3-arm-signed.zip from http://androidsu.com/superuser/ and flashing it through recovery worked.
I now have root with the stock Sprint ICS. Why? Because I wanted to keep the 3D and Wimax functionality (i know, i know) while still being able to run TiBackup to freeze the goddamned pre-installed apps that everyone hates. I'm sure this is stated elsewhere in the forums, but I read your post before I resolved my issue so I thought I'd come back and reply just in case you or anyone else were still grappling with it.

Thanks a lot, that really helped me to root a brand new stok rom on the Sprint evo 3d!
Just for future reference when you download a super user zip, notice the letters next to superuser efghi those letters represent the past android os's (e)clair, (f)royo, (g)ingerbread, (h)oneycomb, and (I)cecream sandwhich. Always look for that if you plan to root a stock Rom.
I've been running into problems galore with all of the AOSP and AOKP ROM's I've tried and decided to go back to stock and try one of the Sense mods for a while. I RUU'ed to 3.14.605.12 and unlocked and installed a custom recovery but I can't get the superuser zip to flash, it just keeps failing. I've tried Amon Ra, which worked in the past, and TWRP. Is the latest RUU unrootable, even after HTC dev unlocking or am I just missing something stupid?
Did you try the one click root method?
Tried flashing that too and it fails.
I believe you need to use Super SU instead of superuser.

Sweet. SuperSU flashed. I knew it had to be something stupid. It's been a long week and it's still not over...
Thanks for your help.

Then inside the app touch install after it's done scanning using smart install method.
