(Q) need skilled helper - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, my question is about 2g and 3g connection and its speed. I have ZTE blade stock 2.2 and everything was ok until i installed new app from play store called Provision optimize. It automatically install tweaks into build.prop. Everything went great, the responsiveness that developer claimed is better is really is but it screwed my 2g and 3g connection. Before i wait about 2-3 seconds to load a page in opera mini, now i have to wait more than 10. I cant even enter play store because of connection time out. There is a JiT compiler option where they said it helps better performance when browsing, so i tried to delete this option, but its not it...can any skilled user read my build.prop and tell me which of the rows can do this bad things so i can delete it? thnx
Heres my build.prop
Edit: everythings fine over wifi, only the mobile connection is fu***d up.

Try this build.prop and tell me if it's better. Copy it back to /system and be sure to set permissions correctly.

The categories that you changed didnt do this. I tried to tweak 3g connection with another app and set those values in the 3g/4g speed optimizer. It must be something else...but i noticed that youve changed the ro.ril.hsxpa to 2...so it takes HSDPA and HSUPA. Dont know if it can do the trick because 3g connection works but it seems that it wait for any command to start loading because its annoyingly slow and it used to be very fast...

bump

So I tried few changes in build.prop and ro.ril.hdsxpa=2 didn't help, neither that a53 to 0 (turn off increased ciphering.
Edit: gprs class to 12 didn't help too

bump again because this problem is really annoying

Since you haven't backed up the old build.prop to compare what's changed (before you used Provision Optimizer), you can try mailing the devs to ask what exactly the app changes in build.prop regarding 3G/2G. Once they tell you, you can download CM 7.2 RC1 for your phone from the CM website, and compare the build.prop of CM with the stuff that the app changed in your current build.prop. The build.prop of CM should have the right settings for most of the options, so you can change your values to those and check. You don't have to e-mail the devs of the app, you could just compare the CM build.prop with the one you have and make changes, but if you e-mail them it'll give an idea of what exactly was changed and why. Just for knowledge.

I have backuped build.prop from 23.3. from the app itself. I never touched the build.prop before this apart from heap size. Dunno if ram manager from Juwe touching it. BUt im scared to delete this and put back the backup..because im noob and if somethings goes wrong ill explode
EDIT: heres what in the build.prop new compared to the old one:

Rename the current build.prop to build.prop.bak and leave it in the same folder. Copy your old build.prop into /system now and set permissions. If mobile data works fine now then you'll know for sure it's a build.prop problem and not something else. Always backup your current build.prop before copying a new one and you'll be fine.

Unstable 3G/H connection but 2G and Wi-Fi are fine

Ok all here is my problem and I know there many more suffering from this:
Connecting to the internet from my Hero works fine on 2G (GPRS) and Wi-Fi, but is very unstable on 3G (UMTS) and H (HSDPA).
By starting a thread, I want to get to an answer as to WHY this is happening and hopefully find a solution
My problem started around the time I started using custom 2.1 (or radio) ROMs, but I am not sure whether flashing those is actually the cause. I have a SIM unlocked Hero and an unlimited data plan with T-Mobile Netherlands (called Web 'n' Walk Plus @ 1 Mbit/s down, 384 Kbit/s up). I had no problem on the stock 1.5 ROM/radio.
Symptoms:
Whenever an app is making a server request, the 3G icon starts blinking the up arrow, shortly followed by the H icon blinking the up arrow, indicating the request is made.
When all is well, the response is received and communication is quick and smooth. Most of the time though, the phone continues making requests but no response is received and the application reports a network error/timeout. This happens while signal strength is max (4 bars).
Ping test:
Enter *#*#INFO#*#* in the phone dialpad and select Phone Information, press the "Run ping test" button.
- The line "Ping IpAddr" reports: "Fail: IP addr not reachable";
- The line "Ping Hostname(www.google.com)" reports: "Fail: Host unreachable";
- The line "HTTP Client test" reports: "Fail: IOException".
The preferred network type is "WCDMA preferred", as set in the lower part of the same screen.
Note: WCDMA is an air interface standard used for UMTS and the like and is not related to CDMA, which is the mobile access technology used in the USA as opposed to GSM, which is used everywhere else in the world.
The thing is though, that the connection does not seem to fall back to 2G but rather experiences a timeout.
FWIW: the Phone Information screen reports a signal strength of -dBm, 25 asu.
Tried:
- Flashing various ROMs to spot any difference, none found.
- Flashing newer radio ROM (JU instead of EU), no luck.
It is here when I first start posting about it:

UPDATE: Apparent solution for T-Mobile 3G problems:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=595108
Fix includes settings as proposed by adwinp below.
Explanation of some settings: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5123531&postcount=46
UPDATE 2:
Well, my problems have vanished "as snow in the sun" (old Dutch proverb)!
Applying the latest radio (JU) and the settings as mentioned by adwinp below made my 3G connection fly again, steady and smooth. Thanks adwinp!
How to modify your build.prop file:
1) Connect your handset via USB, make sure USB debugging is enabled
2) From the Android SDK > tools directory, type the following:
Code:
# adb pull /system/build.prop ~/build.prop
3) Open the file with your favorite editor and append the following lines:
Code:
ro.ril.enable.dtm=1
ro.ril.hep=1
ro.ril.hsxpa=2 #for USA, use 1
ro.ril.gprsclass=12 #for USA, use 10
ro.ril.enable.a52=1
ro.ril.enable.a53=1
ro.ril.hsdpa.category = 28
ro.ril.hsupa.category = 7
Save the file. Next:
Code:
# adb remount
# adb push ~/build.prop /system/build.prop
# adb reboot
Some sources claim that a second reboot is necessary, check this for yourself.
Good luck!
UPDATE 3:
Seems my joy was short lived; could be that just rebooting was a temporary fix and a good old placebo effect, since I already experienced connection loss again. Sigh. Anyone else with a good idea?
UPDATE 4:
Could this be an MTU issue, like stated here or here? I'd like to know the methods of changing the MTU for 3G, investigating now.
UPDATE 5:
None of the theories above seem to be plausible. Looks like T-Mobile/Orange is the culprit here. Further reading here: https://t-mobile-forum.pocketinfo.nl/showthread.php?p=725207#last (in dutch)
You have either a
1: physical problem with the handset
2: network problem (check if other ppl within the same network have the same problem)
Try playing with these values in /system/build.prop
ro.ril.enable.dtm = 1 # you might want to disable this one, although it doesn't hurt
ro.ril.hep = 1
ro.ril.hsxpa=2
ro.ril.gprsclass=12
ro.ril.enable.a52=1
ro.ril.enable.a53=1
ro.ril.hsdpa.category = 28
ro.ril.hsupa.category = 7
# Default network type 0 => WCDMA Preferred.
ro.telephony.default_network = 0
These settings come from my ROM, which has been tested on various networks in Poland, Germany and Mauritius.
3G performance is flawless.
I have been having this very same problem, and I know others have too. it is strange but has only happened since the newer 2.1 builds have been out.
After lengthy conversations with the high technical team at Orange UK they diagnosed my problem as for some reason the phone is trying to connect to two 3g radio towers at the same time (usually should connect to only one) basically this is confusing the phone.
What the fix seems to be is:
- *#*#4636#*#*
- phone options
- ping test (will probably fail)
- change to "GSM ONLY" - for 30 seconds or more NOT LESS!!
- ping test (should succeed)
- then change back to "WCDMA Only" or "preferred"
- ping again (should now work)
If this does not fix it then you have two more options
- take the sim out the phone for 30 seconds (this is the minimum required time to disconnect your phone from the towers your on)
- OR airplane mode for 30 seconds.
Then try the above again and all should be working.

Do you have any reference information for these settings? I'll try to look it up myself but I can't fiddle with them unless I know what the possible values are and at least know what each setting is used for

Interesting reason; you think this could be related to the fact that the latest VillainROMs stem from CDMA ROMs? What I still don't get is that speech and GPRS traffic are unaffected, these just work.
I already tried your fixes several times but for me they don't work everytime. Ah well, hopefully the official 2.1 update does some good here

Possibly however my problems first seemed to start after the Legend based roms.

I don't think a CDMA source is the issue here.
I've ported a CDMA to GSM with no problem whatsoever.
You could always try replacing libreference-cdma-sms.so, libreference-ril.so, libril.so and libhtc_ril.so from a GSM ROM.
Im also on T-mobile NL with unlimited web n walk
i dont have that issue, and i am currently on aHero 0.7 with latest radio,
also havent encountered the problem on other 2.1 roms
i hope this is some additional information
I always run into this problem as well on all of the 2.1 ROMS pretty much. I'm on the 3 network in the UK. Basically I never had this problem with any of the modaco 1.5 ROMS.
Awesome. Thankyou!
This has fixed my annoying 3G issues, Exactly as you describe.
What exactly is the solution?
Update 2 - First post.
Previously browsing maps would stall and the "up" arrow be stuck on, with the "down" one empty. I say maps, but anything really that uses the data connection. Most often going into Airplane mode and back again fixed it. Now it just works, and quickly too.
BTW - I'm on orange UK.

So just adb those values into the build.prop file and now everything is fine?
Yep. Thats basically all I did, I did a remount, pulled the build prob to my local, edited it, then pushed it back.
First reboot then I had connectivity, but the status bar showed it not being registered on the network. Second reboot and it was all good. A consitent 3G/H signal and no stalling of data transfers.

I edited my OP, since I experienced connection loss again. How is it holding up for you?
Great topic J0bro.
I am having exactly the same problems as you describe. I was just searching the web since at first i couldn't find anything usefull here. I just went back to see if there were some new rom updates and i saw this topic.
I am now running villain 5.2 and latest radio. I was already experiencing the same probs a while back but not as much as i am now. It seems that when I try to open an app on the market i get a lot of connection errors. The switching between the 3g and H takes too long and times out.
I now have a stream running on stream live radio and that uses my H connection. Once it is continuously using H it seems just fine......
Strike that italic part.... When i was typing that it disconnected went back to 3G and lost connection. Now its switching back and forth between 3G and H
Damn this sucks man. I will try the part of of the build.prop....
Pff and i just got my debricked hero back
FYI I am on t-mobile NL with web n walk plus
Did you try replacing the ril libs I mentioned in /system/lib ?
Did you test this in another city?

Just put it underneath the rest in the build.prop and rebooted twice.
Did I do that right?
Hi there which 2.1 Rom did u try?
On tmobile UK and had same 3g problem with stock rom but its fixed now. Only been testing with villainroms. Version 3.4 and 5 beta2 works perfect, the legend based one doesn't work and has same 3g problems. So its probrqbly not universal across 2.1 roms

[mod]Boosting Signal Strength (hspa/gprs)

If anyone has anymore info on the ro.ril. properties, I would greatly appreciate it.
It would also be great if every shared the script they use with which network.
You'll need a rooted Streak and Root Explorer.
Add/edit these entries to "/system/build.prop" (you must mount to r/w and open with Text Editor). Make sure that these are not already in your build.prop, if they are, then just edit the values.
ro.ril.hsxpa=2 (higher values are invalid until proven otherwise)
[0=UMTS] [1=HSPDA only] [2=HSPDA & HSUPA]
ro.ril.gprsclass=10 (Class 10 to save battery)
The Streak supports Class 12 GPRS, set to 12 to increase EDGE speed
ro.ril.hep=1 (no info available, no change when turned off)
ro.ril.enable.dtm=1
Enable "dual transfer mode" on EDGE networks; requires different GPRS class setting. Only set this to 1 if your network allows simultaneous transfer of Circuit switched (CS) voice and Packet switched (PS) data over the same radio channel (ARFCN).
ro.ril.hsdpa.category=8 (Cat 8 is the Streak's max)
ro.ril.hsupa.category=6 (Cat 6 is the Streak's max)
ro.ril.enable.a53=1 (enable increased ciphering on HSDPA/HSUPA)
ro.ril.enable.3g.prefix=1 (Adds the 3G prefix e.g. Optus 3G, etc.)
All Carries have their own specific settings they should use.
As Im using Optus Prepaid in Australia these are the setting I use. Lots of experimenting went into these and my 3G works better than ever. Best SpeedTest I've got was D2.98/U1.52 48ms ping on 4 bars, average is about D2.5/U1.0 80ms.
Code:
ro.ril.enable.dtm=0
ro.ril.gprsclass=10
ro.ril.hep=0
ro.ril.enable.3g.prefix=1
ro.ril.hsdpa.category=8
ro.ril.hsupa.category=6
ro.ril.hsxpa=2
ro.ril.enable.a53=1

This will not increase the power of your antenna or increase radiation. All this does is choose the best profiles for EDGE/HSDPA/HSUPA. Its proven to increase speed and connection strength.

It sounds make sense, modifying the RIL parameter. However I found those 3 lines a little bit .... maybe the first two lines are unnecessary due to our device is not HTC? And for all those lines, i think there should be no blank spaces between characters. I might be wrong though
dw I did my research and testing b4 I posted and every entry has some effect on signal strength
I posted em ages ago, they are in steves streakmod rom
the bitmask ones won't make a difference, as they aren't valid for the streak..
If you're seeing a difference its placebo I'm afraid

Hey, I'm on SD 1.7.0 and I don't see them in my build.props? Should they be in there or did Steve already include it somewhere else in the ROM and therefore no need for me to add it to the build.prop?
Thank you.
When I saw this on DJ_Steve's StreakDroid thread, I tried it. It broke my data connection. I had no WiFi and no 3g. I deleted the edits, and everything worked fine after that.
I might go back and try it with the double - reboot, though.
they arent in 170, they dont work for everyone..
in earlier roms they were in /etc/local.prop
but I guess we'll have a new thread with someone proclaiming they found local.prop works for prop settings as well
So, to try these out, put them in build.prop, do a double reboot and if it didn't break anything, then keep them? Else remove them and double reboot again?
Worked on my US unlocked streak on 1.7.0. Don't know if it really changed anything. Speeds are about the same and signal strength looks the same. Wifi still works fine.
UPDATE: Spoke too soon wifi broke. Connects to my router but no data. Uninstalling.

reduce wifi txpower?

i googled and searched but ended up with nothing..
im using wifi tethering when im not in home...i want to reduce my wifi energy consuming....
When I was taking a Cisco Wireless Class, I remember reading that the 802.11 specification included a specification for automatically reducing power. Can't imagine the phones wouldn't have that ability baked in. I know the cell radio in the phone does it.
Well.. don't know if we're talking about the same value, but here is anyways:
I'm using LOL 1.4.2 and on the docs Paolo states that for his Rom Wifi TX power is set by default at "20", and if you want to change it there is a little script located at:
/etc/setwifi.sh
Checking the content of that script with root explorer the line it runs is as follows:
/system/xbin/iwconfig wlan0 txpower 20
I've always been curious about what's the actual default TxPower on stock Roms because as far as I know that "20" level is a reduced one.
im using cm7 from rjtchn15
Ccdreadcc
Im from Chennai. Please help me. I have accidentally uninstalled pc sync.apk so my contacts are not showing up.
Can you share your stock Rom.
If i install Rom will i get pcsync.apk by default or not

From what I know it was fixed in first Russian release (C170B008).
Any release after that should have the correct Adreno 220 drivers and OpenGL/ES libraries version 2.0 (2184622). That's what fixes some of the Skype problems you may have encountered. It also fixes other applications graphics issues.
You can check your libraries versions with "OpenGLES Extension Viewer" from the Market.

Yes.
Tried the current version on my Springboard. Looks really nice.
The cellular radio is kind of finicky. I put in my PC Mobile (Bell) SIM and by default it just complained no service. I manually scanned networks, it saw nothing. Then I told it to scan, and it saw 5 carriers, all numbered, no names. I told it to select automatically, it failed. Then eventually it succeeds and called it by number, and connected to HSPA but not to phone services.
On a second reboot I had to go through the same jig. Now it calls the network PC Mobile and I can make a (jumbo!) phone call, but no data connection. Then I toggle airplane mode, and it comes back out of it on HSPA. Now I finally have both data and phone. Not that I want to make a phone call for real on a tablet, but this is a SIM for a phone account so it's helpful to be able to receive service texts and call customer services.
Interesting that *#*#4636#*#* doesn't work in the dialer, but I can get the Testing menu via Anycut.
HSPA speeds at the present moment (and it's raining hard outside) are 5621 down / 2552 up, so I don't seem to be experiencing any loss of "4G" compared to on the T-Mobile firmware.

It's ()()2846579()()= from calculator. Anyway, I also use anycut since it's more practical. They probably use calculator to enter the testing menu because initially it didn't have a dialer.
Edit: *#*#2846579#*#* from the dialer also works.

So thats why the first general version had the data switch problem?
Im testing the latest build and noticed it switches faster between 3g and h.

Trying this now myself.
I had noticed after a day of taking the tab out with me on this firmware, two data oddities:
- Sometimes it would appear to have H data connected, but when I actually tried to use the data nothing came through. I had to toggle all sorts of things each time to get reconnected.
- Often it would spend several minutes connected to the phone network but without any data yet.
And on one occasion it was stuck in "3G" with no operational data, and wouldn't switch to "H" until I toggled airplane mode.
So who knows, maybe this'll help?
Touchscreen sensitivity fixed yet?
Can anyone comment on the touch screen behavior on these new ROMs? I am beginning to wonder if it is a hardware problem, though don't recall the annoying 'tap interpreted as swipe' issues on HC.
Hows the hdmi out output in this version?

Perfect. I think it's slightly sharper than the Russian rom (that might just be my mind playing tricks). Definitely better than previous international firmware.

Loses 4G Signal After call

My XZU loses LTE signal after every call comes in and remains in 3G for long time before re-connecting to the LTE signal again.
Is there anyway to rectify this?? Its very annoying because 3G is extremely slow on the device.

you could add some settings into the build.prop to enable 4g to kick in sooner.
Sorry I'm not sure what they are...
But by default 4G is set to óff' when making calls to save battery.
The following enables 4G all the time. But that would reduce battery life. Probably only 3-5% depending on how often you are on a call.
"lteOnGsmDevice=1""
The next settings will increase the download /upload speeds

If youre not sure how to make these changes to your build.prop just post another question here... I.. or someone will help you out.
Thanks....so any kind soul can assist to find where the build.prop file is?

sorry thought you may have known...
O.K. are you rooted??
yes - lets continue
no - lets stop. You wont be able to access this file unless you have root access
I'll assume you are rooted.
a) Do a backup. Sometimes (not often) modifying your build.prop file causes boot issues)
b) Use a file manager and navigate to your root directory. just go back as far as you can. There will be about 5-10 folders, and a file called 'build.prop'
That's the file you want.
Nope I am not rooted. Anyway to do so without roothing? I am a simple user.

No unfortunately...
There is no way to access these root files unless you are rooted.
This is the reason why users want root access. To change some default settings and make a few tweaks.
