stolen TP in Jamaica looking for some help - TouchPad General

First day on vacation and our laptop and touchpad was stolen. Was wondering if I can remote install security on it to find it, lock it, use the camera or wipe it. Don't remember exactly which build is on it but it's an April ics nightly.
And yes, I'm an idiot for not having that stuff on before vacation but I'm trusting. Never again.
Have an appointment with head of security in the morning but I doubt anything will get resolved.
Please list options. If any. Thank you.

not sure what apps you could install but if it's on and has a network connection you could always push apps from the Android market to the device
https://play.google.com/store
not much help I know but it's at least a start....

You could try installing this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...GwsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5sb29rb3V0LmxhYnMucGxhbmIiXQ..
Its a find my phone/tablet solution that is intended to be installed after you lose the tablet. Since the Touchpad is wifi only, I wouldnt count on it unless you had the wifi set to never sleep, whoever took it never turned it off or rebooted to webOS, and it happened to be near wifi. But you never know, might get lucky.

Edit: just remembered our TP's do not have GPS which is going to decrease your chance of finding it.

Correct, right out of our room. We were here about 4 hours.
Plan B works on GPS. Or did I read it wrong? Sorry, been limited time online as our phone chargers were stolen with the laptop bag and have only been able to get a little charge here and there from a friendly random person trying to help out. our phones haven't been being full charges.

Is there something out there that I can download when it connects to wifi again that would lock it up?

Wow, I am with you...I had a tp "stolen" recently as well in the great old usa. Placed an ad on craigslist. Sold it really fast. However, whe I got to the bank to deposit the $250, I was informed all of the 20's were counterfeit! I did make a police report and bank report...

...Or that CyanogenMod's ninja attack force took it to help in developing CM10.
In any case, I say do what you can but like they said before without GPS it would be hard to track. Remote lock maybe, but I am sure it's being sold or something and they may figure out how to wipe but at least your data is safe.
Good Luck!!

If you have insurance they will replace lost phones...
If you don't, Sprint extended the open insurance until the 30th... Technically it would be insurance fraud, but I'll leave that up to you. There's no way for them to know.
Well damn it Dave

Is it too late to use this? https://market.android.com/details?id=com.lookout.labs.planb&feature=search_result
I think I remember something about sprint family tracker. You could check that out, but I think your gps has to have been on.
Depending on how smart the person that picked it up is, you may be able to install a tracking app from the Market from your computer and find it(as long as they haven't logged out of your account). You may be surprised. I would retrace my steps and see if anyone turned it in. Since it is a Saturday night I would assume that most likely you left it at a restaurant or bar. I would go back to each one of them(once they open) and see if someone turned it in. If not, you will have to report it stolen and get a new one through TEP if you have it. I always, ALWAYS carry TEP on my phones. It's a lot easier to come up with $100 deductible then to come up with $600 to buy one outright.
Ok. I'm sober now drinking my coffee.
I had a beer pong table set out on my lawn (I own a lot of land and am going to be combing it today) but I know its not there. I got in the car with somebody to get cigs (with baggy sweat pants on) at the local convenient store. I went back to the store (piss drunk) and asked the two girls if they've seen it and nada ****ING thing (its not in either of the two vehicles either)
I've called and texted my phone a million times (I have to slow down or my battery will die). I do have the $100 dollar insurance but am bummed out about the new hboot.
What's the name of the app that tracks it and how do I install it to my phone from either my tabs or PC?
Thanks guys.
Edit... I just read what I wrote..... I may still be a little drunk. Hiccup. Hope that all made sense.

The name of the app is Plan B. It's by the same company as Lookout.
Here's what it says on their website: "Lookout has an app called Plan B which can locate your phone after you've lost it. The phone needs to be powered on and have a network and data connection. Just go to the online Android Market (http://market.android.com), log into your Android Market account, and install the app to your missing phone. If you are able to install the app and it runs, you will begin to get emails to the Gmail account that you have registered with the Android market with location information."
I also read after you install it, you have to send a text that says "locate." I've even read where someone didn't start getting the emails til the next day. The phone had died, but then the person who had it recharged it!
Oh, yeah. After you install the app to your phone, install Lookout to your tablet, just in case. Not only can you do the locate thing, but Lookout also examines any app you download for malware.
Hope this helps. Keep us posted.

If you set up your account in HTC hub to use skins and you turned on the phone finder go to greener.com log on with the account you set up and you should be able to use that to find your phone.
The app they are talking about is called lookout you can google Android market on your computer to get it but I don't think it will install it but I could be wrong.
EDIT:looks like it will install it once that is done go to lookout.com and set up the account and hopefully that will work. there is also an app called where is my droid that might help here it the link to it https://market.android.com/details?id=com.alienmanfc6.wheresmyandroid&feature=search_result

You can log into the market from your computer and have it install plan b on your phone remotely . The phone of course has to be on and your gmail account still linked on the phone. Plan b is for when you have already lost your phone and didn't have a tracking app installed. I just installed the sprint tep app that does the same thing as lookout for for free(I'm guessing you need to have tep for it to work?) That won't help now(plan b is your best shot) but it will help in the future if you ever misplace your phone

[Q] My Tablet got stolen

So my tablet was stolen a couple of days ago. I don't think I can find it or who stole it at this point. I do remember doing something like registration with Samsung after I bought it to get the TW update. Is there a way I can get Samsung to lock this ish up wirelessly? Or track it as well?
That's bad news, sorry to hear that. You could try Plan B http://is.gd/WibhTe and also Samsung DIVE http://www.samsungdive.com/DiveMain.do

Sucks bro, and not to be smart towards your situation, but next time try something like SeekDroid. Its an app that allows you to track the phone, tab etc. You can wipe it etc.
Dont worry you have no idea how many times I think I am such an idiot for not having an app like that on the tablet! Unfortunately it is wifi only so I am not sure just how well those apps would have worked.
Just go ahead and install Plan B, when the thief connects to the internet then it'll get installed, unless they've reset it already. Keep us up to date on this.

[Q] Wife's Phone Lost/Stolen Best Options Now?

Wife left phone unattended in a public place and someone took it. She has never even gotten a scratch on a phone before. It appears that it was turned off or sim removed. It rang a few times for her but by the time I tried "Where's My Droid" it was going to voice mail. ATT is no help and claims they can't block IMEI. She just wants to go back to her LGVu but I know she enjoyed the android. 1. any ideas on how to maybe track it/get it back? 2. Best place to get a good price on another one (used or refurbished ok)? What would be about the best price I can find? 3. I may have to JTAg my bricked Cappy for her, that's only $50. Any useful in put would be great. I know looks like we are screwed.
Thanks,
Ken
Should have done a Nandroid backup, then you could restore your phone to its last state.
I guess you could always try Rom Manager...

I hope she had it locked, so the theif cannot get the personal info.
Anyway if you are looking for a replacement for AT&T, I would suggest to try SGSII: Skyrocket, it support 4G LTE. It will be faster than the current 4G H+.
I think you should wait for samsung galaxy s2 hd lte to come out, give your current phone to her, and get the new one.

Try Androidlost app from the market, I think it's probably the only app you can push to the phone after its lost and use the web interface to do a host of things like remotely locking and wipe SD. Plus you can make the phone scream at whoever has it, take photos and send you history of call/sms records etc.

Good question, How do I do a recovery on a phone I don't have?
I tried android lost but since the phone is off or the sim is out I can not install it.
That being said I could have used whers my droid pro to send me a text with the new number if they put a new sim card in. But I only expected to locate a misplaced phone not a stolen one.
Learn from my mistake and set up these apps on ur phone now.
No it was not locked she has always worked in a office and had gotten complacent.
What is the S2 HD LTE and when is it coming out?
We all know the S2 beats the hell out of a skyrocket.
I can't affoed over $400 for a new phone so looks like she will get my old GS or and old Iphone.
If anyone is upgrading and can work with me let me know.
Thanks again.

Not too long ago, ATT was selling SGSII refurbs for $0.01. I got one for my better half, and it's sailing along famously.
That was for $0.01 with a two year contract correct? We paid $.96 each for the two we bought, but now we are not able to upgrade again. Can't get that deal.

Skyrocket is still SGSII. I am not far off... (It's just SGSII little bro) LOL! Don't get me wrong, I just got myself the SGSII and love it. I was going to recommend both, but end up recommending Skyrocket (your version: ****rocket. LOL) because of the 4G LTE feature. If the SGSII had the 4G LTE, I would not even flinch recommending it.

[Q] Insurance replacement...refurb or new???

Its simple as I lost my phone Saturday now I have the insurance claim done and going to be shipped to me. When I was on the phone with the agent I asked if it was a refurb or new she said she couldnt tell from her computer So what kind of opion do you guys have on this? I really hope its a new one but a 15 day old refurb will work.
Thanks in advance for all thoughts.

Doubt that they have refurbs already so you are most likely going to get a new or returned one at worst
I really need to ask if you had any kind of app on the phone to locate it i.e. Lookout.?
This is what I am scared of happening to me, so I know there are other apps that will allow for more locating options then Lookout, the cost is worth it.
Especially if they can retrieve it. I am thinking it may be in a lost and found closet at the train or bus terminal. Or some goon has it, and sold it for drug money.. lol

Yeah I didn't have any tracking app on it. Now when I get my new one that's the first thing that I'm downloading. I guess you learn from your mistakes :/
I wonder when you lose a phone like that does ATT shut it down so it can't be used on their network anymore?
I guess it would still make a nice wifi mini tablet.
---------- Post added at 12:02 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:58 AM ----------
Also, I'm guessing there are more people returning these phones because they find it too big or they brick it or something than there are people breaking and losing them and getting replacements. So I would say you'll get a refurb that is in like new condition.

You know I was thinking about that. When someone finds my phone can they use it as a wifi only device without being found out. I would hope ATT could track it down someway so I could get it returned to me....but who knows right!!! If they sign into the android market to download a app can I some how trace it to them or is that as impossible???? I hope they are stupid enough to put a sim in it and try and use it!!!

I would caution against them. They did return my phone in a working condition. However, they clearly have a very poor understanding of how to properly run a business and you should count out any kind of customer support during the process.
First off, when you send off your phone, you're given a guarantee that the phone will be finished within 4 days and shipped back no later than the 5th day it's been there. great! Except when the 10th day rolls around and you haven't heard a thing from them. So you think "I'll just give them a call and see what's up." Only now you find out that they don't answer the phone. They sometimes do, but that's after calling back several times throughout the day. You finally get them on the phone and they apologize for not getting your phone sent out and tell you it's going through testing and it will be shipped out the next monday at the latest. Wednesday rolls around and still, you hear absolutely nothing from them. Then begins the process all over again. You have them promise to call you if it's not sent out and the person on the phone personally guarantee's to call you if it's not sent out. Guess what? Another promise broken.
My 4 days took just under a month. It's still a small business and it seems like it's being run by a few people who do everything. If they had told me that it would take a month in the beginning, I would have been okay. Instead, they choose to extremely over promise what they can't even begin to deliver on. The entire thing felt like I was getting scammed and I was never very certain that I wasn't until I got my phone back.
Once again, I did get my phone back and it does work well. My screen sometimes doesn't work now for some reason but I haven't actually tested to make sure it's the rom that's not working. If you do decide to go with them, I would take any guarantee they give you with a grain of salt.
I believe the JTAG repair itself was ~$60 but my logic board was supposedly also bad so it got bumped up to $100 in the end. If I had to do it all again, I would probably just buy a new logic board on ebay and replace that for ~$60-70 bucks myself but it's not something I thought about at the time.

I would caution against them. They did return my phone in a working condition. However, they clearly have a very poor understanding of how to properly run a business and you should count out any kind of customer support during the process.
First off, when you send off your phone, you're given a guarantee that the phone will be finished within 4 days and shipped back no later than the 5th day it's been there. great! Thanks for the detailed response. I don't think I'll be using them as I'd be too worried my phone would never get returned. Time to look elsewhere. :crying:
Most people have great luck with them. Don't take one bad experience as the whole picture of the company.

I will say I got mine back and the touch screen wasn't workin. They wanted me to ship it back so they could look at it I took it apart myself and one of the connectors for the touchscreen wasn't connected so I fixed it but they didn't test my phone out before they shipped it back. So I would advise against using them.

Im going to stick with my original answer of I DO recommend MobileTechVideos JTAG service! That means I ENDORSE their service.... They were very detailed about how to correspond with them, I had no difficulty in this WHATSOEVER. Provided tracking on my phone. Slow return service nets you exactly what you pay for. Want it back sooner.... pay the postage and take it up with USPS or UPS or whoever is handling your parcel. MobTech is doing YOU a service with service options to fit the pockets of different people... Don't H8 cuz you went light on your payment decision.... Mobile tech videos adhered to the outline they setup 10 fold IMHO, On BOTH transactions I made with them....
I am NOT a paid spokesperson for MobTechVid.
Just a guy that would use them again (God Forbid) if the need arises.

Ya I read it again.... Go to Mobtechs website and try again bro.... you cant complete your transaction with out attaining exactly all the info you need to track your phone and it states clearly you pay base amount u get base postal service.... you pay rush , it comes back a day later than rush service. both time it was in their shop for the same amount of time.... but I payed different returns and slow was slow, speedy was -speedy. When they charge your card... they have provided all info on EVERYTHING you will encounter until it comes back to you.... never strayed from it once... So Stop ****in your phone up and JTAG wont be needed....
