Well, maybe it's different in ICS, but on GB, you open email, hit menu, hit more, hit account settings, hit sync schedule.
Though if you're talking about GMail, and not EMail, you can just turn off auto-sync in your Accounts and Sync settings.

its very simple go to settings> accounts and sync then untick the auto sync option..thats it

Interesting you did not thank me, but thanked the guy who responded an hour after me, and said the exact same thing I did... but I digress.
Did you try going into the email settings as I suggested?

So obviously there are some differences in the email app from Gingerbread to ICS. It's just a matter of navigating the menu to find the options you're looking for.
When you open the email app, and hit menu, do you get a "Settings" or "Account Settings" option? (if so, do you see a "Sync schedule" option inside that?)

That's the sync period. In other words, how far back to retrieve emails. There should also be a sync schedule, to set peak and off peak schedules on how often to sync.

You set it to what you want.
Push = emails retrieved when they are received.
Manual = on demand (when you first open the email app, or click "refresh")
You can also set it to intervals.
Peak/off peak is like day/night settings.
This is the same as GB...

It seems on ICS that these settings are not present, either in the main accounts sync settings, or in the stock mail client settings. I think they were there when I set the email account up, but perhaps cannot be changed subsequently?
Am I just missing something, or do I need to use another email client to get this capability?!

on samsung ics roms its email>menu>settings>select your account>email check frequency>set it to never
then it will only check when you open your email manually

Thanks skimminstones. Is it possible to change the number of emails downloaded, or is this missing in the stock app?

not that i can see. It just downloads whatever is waiting. Doesnt download any attachments automatically, youd have to open the email and press download for that.

See posts 10 and 11 in this thread. You can change how far back in terms of date it looks to download emails, but not a specific number of emails.

[Q] Sync Exchange calendar, NOT email

I have an Exchange account setup on my phone (Samsung Vibrant, running Project-V, 2.2 ROM).
Is there some way to prevent it from syncing email? I only want the calendar to sync, but I can't find an option to disable email syncing. Any apps that can help me accomplish this?
Not positive just an idea, if you go under accounts and sync, click on the account, there maybe, like the google options, check boxes where you can check what you want to sync. I will do a little research, if that doesn't work see if I can find more.
Edit: another idea, go to the update schedule, and choose update manually?
Thanks button always appreciated!

PostRoot GMail AutoSync

Just a point I want to make for anyone out there who is as clueless as me:
After rooting, I found that GMail would not autosync. It instructed me to enable autosyncing in settings; however, the settings menu (B&N Style) didn't have the usual menus, and the settings accessible through GMail also didn't help. Eventually, I figured out that you need to click your e-mail in the top right-hand corner, go into menu, click account settings, click GMail under Manage Accounts, and check off the "Sync Gmail" box.
Maybe no one else needs this info, but I spent a while looking for it, so just in case.
nice find. i was using an external app to get to this menu (quick sync).
Is there a way to change the sync period? I'd like to load up some older messages onto my device.

When you are in the gmail app main screen you need to click your email address that is listed in the top right. From there you just follow the remainder of his steps posted above.

Thank you thank you. I was worried it couldn't be done. I'm happy to be syncing gmail.
Is there any way to get the notification to show up? I get new mail but don't know it.
Have you enabled them in the gmail settings? Are you using an alternative launcher? I can see them using ADW.

Thanks for pointing this out. I knew I had seen the option before, but I couldn't remember where it was buried in the menus.
I used AnyCut to make a shortcut to Accounts & Sync. That gives me access to the settings to choose what I want to sync (reader, docs, contacts, mail, etc).

SGS2 and K-9 Mail

Hi everybody,
I recently downloaded K-9 Mail for my Galaxy S2 and setup all my email accounts, but the problem is that I want this program periodically check my emails.
I've set the "Folder Poll Frequency" for all accounts to "1 Hour", but it doesn't seem to automatically check email.
When, after sometime, I open K-9 Email, I see at the top the statement "Next Poll @ ..." which is always set to a time one hour later than the time I opened K-9; for example, if I open it at 9:32, it says "Next Poll @ 10:32" and I press the Home button and wait for 5 minutes and open it again at 9:37 and it says "Next Poll @ 10:37".
Anybody having the same issue? Is there any workaround?
Thank you...
Menu-more-settings-account settings-fetching email-folder poll frequency- you can try to set it never
Menu-more-settings-global settings-network-backround sync- set it to never
Hope this helps

Could you do a test (if you haven't done it yet)?
Set the poll freq. to 15 min.
Wait 5 min and check K9 to see if poll time has changed.
Wait 5 min and email yourself something, so we know you will receive a msg.
Wait 5 min and see if K9 fetchs the message.
If it doesn't work, check if manual fetch works (and syncs). If manual fetch doesn't work, check your email settings.
If manual fetch works, do you have any data connection managers that could interfere (such as JuiceDefender)?
In my case I have K9 with two mail accounts and didn't saw any problem fetching (poll freq. @ 15 min)
Hello
Don't want to open another new post for K9-Mail but can you please advise if it works with Exchange 2010?
Thank You

Native Email app on ICS, where is Manual setup?

Hi!
Am I the only one having this problem? The "manual setup" when adding a new email account is now "Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync". There is no manual options anywhere. I've been searching for it for a week, I'm now using some crap email client while searching but this is really a pain in the ***...
Do you know any tricks to bypass this and get to the manual configuration screen?
Or is there any way to have the default ICS email app? Why is samsung replacing it at the first place?!
Thanks!
Just fill in the fields and then the "manual setup" button will be enabled.

The button is NOT manual setup anymore, like I said it's now a button for Microsoft ActiveSync.

Have you tried clicking on it? Maybe they just changed the label of the button, and it does the same thing. (As VAXXi notes above, you will probably have to fill out address and password before it enables)

Yes I tried it, it leads to the Exchange configuration screen.
I tried so many things and yet nothing works.
edit: yes I filled both fields, I even tried to input my IMAP infos inside Exchange screen lol

So you're trying to enter an IMAP email server into your email app? Yeah, that won't work with Exchange Activesync. What IMAP server?
You could just put in your address/password and hit next. It should try to auto-discover your server settings and add the account, and you should be able to edit them after that in the settings.
OR, have you tried going through the Accounts settings instead of through the Email app?

lol, I'm trying to add custom IMAPS so it does not find them automagically unfortunately... So I can't get past the account autoconfiguration screen.
I tried going from the Account settings but there's no email option, nor imap or pop3 options...

Sorry to hear this But by custom IMAP I mean, they are not automatically detected because they're not using standard hostname syntax like imap.domain.com but more something like imap.mail.domain.com which seems to cause problem to the Email app hehe
Thanks anyways

Right, I know what you meant.
To clarify, I meant I've only ever set up my Exchange account for work, and my Gmail account. I've never tried to set up an IMAP or POP account for any other address.
Good luck dude.
Ah, ok. You have to fill in the details email and incoming server, then uncheck the "push notification" checkbox and the bottom left button will change to "manual setup", and you can configure your IMAP.
It's stupid, I know

[SOLVED]K9 -- won't connect to server

I've just installed K9 on my Evo 3D running ICS.
I've tried to setup POP email accounts on both comcast.net and gmail.com (my gmail account is set to POP3). No matter what account I try, I receive this error message. It happens both if I let K9 automatically configure the account or if I do it manually (and I've triple checked that my settings are correct). Phone has both wifi and mobile network running. Default email app has no problems.
How do I fix this?

Uhh, yeah it can, I've been using it for years with my POP AT&T account. Sounds like a server setup issue maybe, double check your settings, I know GMail requires secure server and I'm sure the Comcast one does as well.
