Why are this icons appearing on my home screen? - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

For some time now this weird icons are appearing on my home scream, is this some sort of spam/virus/adware i got onto my tablet? I don't really know what to do about it, any ideas?

I found this: http://www.pcworld.com/article/245305/sneaky_mobile_ads_invade_android_phones.html
Not sure if it will get you going in the right direction or not... hope you can get rid of them!

BethyM, thank you for the link it was very informative. It looks like "Media Player Classic" was responsible for unwanted ad-ware. I'l get back to you in few days to tell if deleting the app solved the issue.
Thanks again,
Cheers.

You're welcome. I learned some things in the process myself

Wow I didn't even know this was happening. This is pure crap and I hope Google puts a stop to it quickly. This is nothing more than malware when installed without notification or consent and hijacking the browser to boot even after uninstalling offending app. As for the developers using these services and not disclosing it as such you deserve the low ratings and poor feedback receive!

I've learned over the past 2 months of owning an Android device is to always check the reviews before installing any app from the google play store.

How to you prevent google play upgrade?

I have the apk for the 3.4.4 market. I froze the market updater but when I install the Market apk within 5 minutes it updates to play. Is there a way to prevent the upgrade?
What's the big deal with preventing the update? Looks like exactly the same market with a name change to me. Just wondering what I'm missing and in no way trying to be a jerk.
Sent from my ADR6400L using xda premium
You dont want to stop the update because if you do, you will not be able to get apps or update current apps with the old market.
Anything else that relies on the newer market will fail as well. I doubt you could stop it anyway..
Install an older version of the Market and use Titanium Backup to freeze the Market Updater...but there's no good reason to not update.
The new market is great! LOL, it is pretty much the same. The only difference if you have a tablet and that allowed you to purches music through the app. Again looks pretty much the same. New name

personally the name change is annoying as all hell, google quit trying to program your brand name in my brain, when i want to buy and app or something i want to go to the market or to the store, not go to the google and pick up a new app.
every-time i'm in a rush trying to pull something from the app market i can't find the bloody icon because i'm looking for the market or in the old location on my app drawer, minor change i know but i have caught myself cussing at google when i needed to re-d/l my gps app after it crashed during a trip i as on a few days ago.
any chance of renaming the new app back to market without root?
Just use a launcher and if already do, just change the name duh..lol that's what I did ....

I also would like to learn how to get around using Play. The new terms seem to allow Google to read my sms messages and record the message routing. I don't think my correspondents would appreciate having their thoughts being part of Google's repertoire.

What conspiracy theorist cooked that up?
The only way to get around using Google Play is to not use android. What you're asking is the equivalent of saying you want to use an iDevice without the app store.

Looks like Ill be going back to a simple phone as I agree with the previous poster... Google is requiring a full disclosure of everything you do. Not just GPS tracking...

Memory needs > any update
I have a very good reason for not wanting auto-upgrades. Radio Shack misled me about the HTC Wildfire S and now I've got jack for memory. I have four apps installed, use only the native message app, and I'm lucky to have 25mb free. Anything less than that and the phone works as well as the Pony Express does today.
FWIW, Tandybot told me I could always install apps on the SD card. In theory, yes, but so few app devs code apps to work in that manner. Lesson learned.
kite edit: SNIP! No need for that kind of attitude around here, I'm afraid.

Scroll Position in Android Market

I don't know if I'm the only one with this problem but I've had it on all 3 of my Android phones and it is annoying to the point of rage.
Whenever you search for an app in the Android Market, click on one and realize its not the one you wanted, you click back but then the scroll position gets reset and you're at the top of the search results. This is even more particularly annoying whenever you look through your previously installed apps on the Android Market and try to re-install some. Its not fun having to scroll 5 pages each time.
Has anyone found a workaround for this? I would be willing to pay for a fix or patch.

Yep, there was a google maps update this morning for me and the widget is gone
it's mistakes like these that I think makes people annoyed at google.
Somewhere in project management they screwed up. Meanwhile they'll bring this back a few weeks later.
I know its so annoying as I use it a lot.

I left them a message and asked for releasing the source code that we can program our own widget... lets see.

They won't be releasing the source code for Maps, it's their own proprietary software. Though there are plenty of API's to hook into maps and lattitude so I doubt it will be long before there are numerous widgets in the Play Store.

I don't think the removal of the widget is something Google missed, it's more than likely been removed intentionally.
Edit: It's likely been removed dude to the fact that Lattitude and nearby friends as linked into Google Now, which notifies automatically and has a card. Moving the feature to be an integral part of the OS rather than just sitting in an optional application.
Where did you get this information from? Is it just a guess, as I can not find a "friends" or any kind of Latitude-related card in google now?
If you want it badly enough you could just uninstall the recent maps update, I tried it and could get the widget back.

This worked for me, uninstall then reboot, latitude widget back and auto updates off for maps.
Any chance they will put it back in next release?
Try this
Here is a post from the Verizon forum. I haven't checked it on my phone yet so hopefully this is accurate:
Found it. The shortcut is gone and I can't find any other actual evidence of it but if you go into Google Maps and click the icon in the upper left corner it brings down a menu and latitude is on there.
My Latitude icon is missing as well, but there is a Latitude layer on Google Maps. My friends are still there, its just less convenient to get to.
Yep I think the widget is gone forever and ever lol I have gotten used to using latitude through the maps now

Well according to this post from an google emplyoee, It does seem the widget being gone is a fact, and only worth mentioning via a one line edit.
God they just don't care. And google now isn't something I can get on my ole Orig Evo I believe...

[Q] How to check which apps are accessing the GPS?

My GPS is draining my battery
For some reason every now and then it turns on to check on my location, and when it can't find it, keeps on checking forever.
I usually turn my GPS off after use but sometimes I forget, and blam, gone is my battery.
Is there any way to check on what's using it? I tried betterbatterystats, but it only shows me that the GPS is responsible for my battery drain (duhhh).
Thanks!
I would really like an answer on this, I've been struggling with this for a while now. Is there any way to check which apps have permissions to use the GPS?
"permission manager" or "permission explorer" from market.
Probably adware that tries to get your position.

Thanks, I was hoping there was an option in Android itself, but I did it the app way.
I made a list of apps that have access to my GPS (none of them are adware, people here aren't that stupid, are they?), and I froze them one by one with titanium backup. It seems that my purchased TomTom Europe is the problem, which really sucks because I use that daily and I can't block it from GPS or it won't work
he helped you, hit thanks to thank him
I'll be the judge of that, thank you.
It turns out that it didn't work after all: I've frozen all apps that have access to the GPS, yet the GPS still searches for my location for some reason... I'll try out some other stuff but if anyone has any good ideas.. I'm open to suggestions
It seems to be HD widgets which is causing the problem. Dunno yet why it kept on after the last freeze, but on the current freeze the problem seems to be gone... I found other threads here that indicate the same problem with HD widgets, so it's probably that.

One last question re. Go Launcher on the Fire. Does anyone know how to add widgets to it. When I click Add and select system widgets, select the widget and then try and add it, it just keeps going to the system settings screen. Is there any option i've missed that says allow widgets?
Thanks again for the help - appreciate it.

Can I just check your Amazon appstore is working OK? I bought an app from the Amazon website but when I go to the appstore to install it, its not working right. I can't access any of my purchased apps - whenever I select library either nothing happens or it goes back to the home screen

Great. Thanks!
I tired this with Nova from Windows. After much fighting to get it to recognise the device as an ADB interface, I dropped into the shell and ran the command as suggested. It returned
Code:
Package amazon.kindle.otter new blocked state: true
but it still prompts for the launcher choice. Tried rebooting the Fire but no change.
EDIT: Idiot-mode engaged. I forgot the com.
Thanks again, and especially for the Google Apps hack.
