I just recently rooted my tablet, with intentions of downloading the ICS rom. But I am a little nervous because I have a few questions. First, has anyone ever had huge problems and had this ruin their tab? Second, I know I already voided the warranty, but is there any other danger in doing this.. I've read all the threads on how to do it and have a pretty good idea. But would just like a little more insight on this idea.

i'm currently running one of pershoot's snapshot builds. aside from the known camera not working issue. i would say it's a very good ics rom and quite stable for the stage that it's in. btw, i've returned tabs with hardware issues after rooting and flashing custom rom. simply odin back to stock and you should be good to go. just follow the instructions carefully of whatever rom you want to try and you'll be ok. good luck!
Thanks for the input. Hopefully I muster up enough guts to go through with it. I'm fairly new to all this so I am a little cautious
Well, there is always a certain risk when you go flashing custom firmware....whether it be on a wii, a psp, a phone, or your tablet. It sounds like doing this sort of thing is relatively new for you, and you are doing the right thing by being hesitant. Probably the WORST thing anyone can do is dive headfirst into it without doing their full research. This would be the same person that fails to thoroughly read all the instructions (and the reviews), and ends up bricking their system. Now....this person rants on the forums about their problem and expects the gurus on here to fix it for them.
In actuality, your risk is very low. Your most helpful tool here will be your own common sense. Read all instructions several times through until you completely understand what you will be doing. If you are confused about something, ask questions before doing it. Avoid the 'cross your fingers and wing it' scenario.
Don't be scared, just be careful. This community seems to have a lot of knowledge to share. Good luck, and let us know how you did!

Yeah I have read most of the forum posts on the subject and have watched a few YouTube videos. I just wanted some input from an experianced person. So thank you for that lol. Thanks for the info. Its appreciated
ics
ics have a lot of issues, unstable, dont have camera, etcccc.......
if you want some great rom, go for overcome, bindroid, task..but forget ics.my opinion.i already flashed all of them.i thing taskrom for wifi and overcome and bindroid for 3g.

I apologize if this subject has been covered before but my searches did not turn up anything. I am an Android newbie with a new Tab 10.1. It seems to work quite well but since the OS allows for easy customization and many people do it, I feel like I am probably missing something. What is there to be gained by moving away from stock? With so many options out there, how does one choose between them?
If there is an article or forum thread that covers this subject in language that newbies will understand, I would really appreciate being pointed in that direction. If such a document does not exist, hopefully someone can answer the questions here.
Visual mods to performance enhancemants are why people tinker with Android ad their devices.
Read as much as you can before you do anything or make any changes.
As far as which is best. That's up to you. Try them all until you find what you like.

I agree Beezer that reading is the key to android world. try as much as you like because it is very hard to brick android devices
Thanks guys, I am sure that you are right about reading as much as possible. The problem is that I am so green that I do not even know what I don't know. Any suggestions on where to start my research?

Galaxy Task ftw...
I have been running Task's roms since I got my tab. His current rom GalaxyTask v6.3 is as smooth it gets at least until an ICS variety is available.
Link is in my signature.
I think the thing to do is just use your Tab for a while before getting stuck into rooting it, give yourself chance to discover it's shortcomings (if any), if you feel it isn't quite up to par, look around for the most suitable fix.
I've had my Tab since August and I haven't yet felt the need to root it, I do keep looking at the threads in the dev section though, one day I'll get tempted but that's not today.
I'll try and hold out for official updates, unless I get really bored and decide to risk my warranty status.
turn to the darkside of rooting and adding a rom. at first i was nervous but after you get a feel of the roms like tasks roms.. omg there is no turning back. it is like night and day and you'll never want to go back to stock
I will finally be unlocking my rezound once I get home from school .... I'm so nervous I will brick it lol. Can someone suggest a noob friendly Rom to get started that has full functionality..I would like WiFi tether to work in infrastructure mode ..since I'm getting the vita next week. I know this question has been beaten to death but there were a lot of different threads with like different opinions and it would be easier if it is all just in this one thread for me. Thanks
I still have a stock Unrooted Rezound also..Will be watching this thread..so let me know your ups and downs..I might do this as well.

I really would stick to just rooted and debloated stock for now. If you reallly want a custom rom I think Scott's Clean rom's run well or Nil's business sense rom's just make sure you are downloading the Gingerbread versions. Make sure you read the threads to see about tethering since that is something i have never done so never paid attention to what works or doesn't with tethering.
P.S. unlocking is extremely easy, just follow the directions on the HTCdev site precisely and you will not have an issue. Also I would definately suggest sticking with Amon Ra for your recovery seems to have the least trouble right now. Clockwork official is really new to the rezound and I still seem to read threads that people have trouble with backups or restoring backups and sometimes even installing roms using it.
Stick to GB for now.
Read the threads and find out which one suites you best. Everyone has different tastes. Do your homework and you won't have problems.
To answer the question about tethering...the only infrastructure tethering to be found is on an ICS ROM. Unfortunately that's not "noob" friendly.
Yes- definitely read the entire threads of any ROMs you are considering so you will know what to expect as far as bugs and known issues.
Stick with Amon Ra recovery. There's an update coming with a fix if it's not already posted.
GB ROMs have ad-hoc tethering. ICS have infrastructure. But ICS ROMs are not fly functional so again- read entire threads to know what you're getting into.
I really like Ineffabilis GB. I would probably just use it with stock kernel though. I'm not seeing a benefit to using dsb although maybe I just need to play with CPU settings more.
This is my first smartphone and something that's really helped me is keeping a text file with notes on how to do everything so I don't have to search for info again when I need it. Also gathers lots of info from various threads in one place and makes it easier to learn everything. Seems it's quite different on this phone since it is still s-on.

Yeah, and a nervous excitement. I was fortunate that WasabiWa83 offered to stand by in chat in case anything went wrong. And a week or so later when I was reflashing a ROM and the phone gave me an error message in the middle of flashing saying it couldn't read my ext sd card I got stuck on the HTC splash screen and I didn't even panic, just went through the steps I had read about and all was good again.
So as long as you read and learn, once you've gone through everything you get comfortable since you know there's a way out of any trouble you may encounter.
Unlocking is simple and easy. Don't worry about bricking the phone man. I owned an Incredible before my Rezound and installed ROMs, radios, kernels, splash screens, you name it and never had a problem. Once you get the hang of flashing stuff and go through the initial process of botching something up and figuring out how to fix it, it becomes second nature and quite fun. Welcome to the unlocked world!
P.s. Nil's business gingersense and scott's roms are great for beginners. I suggest Nil's if you want a little bit of theming and scott's if you want more basic functionality. Stick with gingerbread for now, although the ICS roms that are out there are good enough to be daily drivers and I did run them for over a month, they do have their little kinks still.
Quit discouraging ICS roms. I haven't been on GB since 2 days after the first leak and aside from bluetooth and the occasional screen flicker, they work fine.
That said, sticking to GB for awhile might be a good idea. There are plenty of people always online here ready to help if you post in the general section. Just make sure to look at stickies and such for help. A good rooting guide written my myself is linked in my signature. It is the most simple of the guides an I have updated it for the newest firmware version.
For me not being unlocked and rooted >>I would say the reason I dont jump right away is not I'm scared or nervous..its the time and effort from going to a fully working phone to a phone that might be buggy to just get just a few perks. Plus not to mention the time it takes to try each ROM out,,gheez that the hard part!!
I personally would do it to get rid of the bloat ware that could be using my battery, What the OP is doing it for? I think the same reason as me. Unless he likes looking forward to the pain like the all of you.

I agree about ICS roms... they are awesome i like them over GB
If you want speed and battery with the stock look mainly, give cleanrom a shot! All the other GBs are themed beautifully and have have a lot of work put into them. I stayed away from ICS because I am OCD on bugs and theme issues such as 4g arrows but it ran very smoothly.

I've told others in various threads but i'll say it here cause it can't be stressed enough. *learn about flashing kernels aka boot.img*.. I would dare to say 70% of the threads in the Dev forum are cluttered with people who never learned about flashing rom kernels with adb or tools like cleanflash that make it easier. The super-noob guide in the dev section is your best friend.
Most folks are used to the kernel being totally packaged in with the rom zip and once you flash the rom zip you're good to go. That is not the case with this phone. Learn about it and save yourself many headaches.
Well I unlocked my phone and I think it's rooted..so I should stick to GB roms? Is ineffabilis good?

Ineffabilis is a GREAT GB Rom but to be honest they're all really good.
I think its good to start off with GB because you may run into usability issues with ICS that may cause issues for you. Flashing a GB will help you get your feet wet!
Hi!
I am a NOOB here..(yes my post will prove it) but I know from what I have read online and from other sites that someone here may be able to help me.. I know once this is read someone will want to post"Why didn't you search first?" Well I did and came up with a ton of threads(some relevant and some not but none really were what I am looking for I think) I am constantly travelling with my company and really do not have the time that some here may have to search all the posts for what I am looking for..plus I suffer from severe adhd which unless it is laid out step by step I get distracted and wander..like I am doing now lol... So please be gentle and I hope someone here can find the time to answer my question.. And again thanks
Here goes!!-
Been a lurker for awhile but been away(overseas) came back and had a great deal( I thought) on a viewsonic gtab cross my desk for 125.00...so I took the plunge from casual reading on net that I could root etc.. I have never owned a tablet so this is my first..
HELP ME LOVE MY GTAB!!!
Now I didnt know which subforum this belongs and if the mods have to move it so be it.. but I need help..and this is the help I am looking for-
I hate the tapntap..I want to root but do not know which rom to go with..I game alot and watch videos alot and grooveip alot... I hope that helps people in the suggestions for which rom I should use. I am computer savvy and follow instructions well...so please point me to anything that might help..I of course would love to have the latest (ics) but hear there is some limited functionality..if I am incorrect in this and some of the limitations in gingerbread please feel free to correct me.
I like to tinker...any cool tinkering/hacks I can do to this tab(that wont completely brick it lol) any sites to suggest..sites for people that love their gtab etc
Basically I just want to feel I got a good deal and I want to root but dunno which one to go to..and I want to keep my camera (for now) but if I see I am not using it much I may flash to something else later...but guys give me all your advice on which rom I should go to first that is the most stable and will suit the needs I outlined earlier... thank you for letting me be long winded..
BTW I love the site but feel overwhelmed with this..which is why I posted..so don't hate..appreciate that I look to your knowledge lol
Hi Bro!
Like you I was kind of lose with all this information about Gtab. My poor english made of google translator do not help me. But if you read a lot, perhaps you can reach something.
Did you know that site? http://viewsonic-gtablet-for-dummies.webs.com/
Well, that name isnt encouraging, but you will found good and easy information in this site. You know, easy steps, everything explained. Good to begin with.
Currently I am using this rom :Beasty/Clemsyn Ultimate Froyo Combo - Simply THE BEST (1.2 bootloader only)
Very fast, good for everything and all things are working, I guess.
Well, read a lot, read again and try something. As always, If you brick your gadget, all responsability is your. Let us know if something go wrong. If you reach success, let us know too. Is good substantiate, your problems can help other people in future.
As I already said, sorry for my poor english.
Good luck Dude.
I agree with jonnybr. Beastly-Clemsyn is my favorite rom when it comes to the stability and speed, at least for me, nothing else has matched it. Everything works, camera, hardware accel., even newer versions of most Gapps and most games work with no problem at all. Only exception is that if you use a USB mouse with your tablet, the orientation will be messed up but that's the price you pay for Skype to work.
If you are quite savvy and enjoy tinkering, maybe try a few different roms and see what you like best. Some of the others that are great are FrankenTab, CM7 (runs great but no HW accel.) and of course ICS (no camera yet and still a Beta build), but if you are looking for a working camera, low risk of problems and stability your best bet is to try one of the Froyo roms like Beastly or FrankenTab.
Funny, I started messing around with mine when I first got it to add functionality and make this thing actually useful and enjoyable. Come to find out, I get more use and enjoyment out of tinkering and messing with it than I do actually using it for it's intended purpose!
I have to agree with jonnybr as well. We were all noobies to at one point, but you made a well worth investment on the tablet. This tablet is virtually brick proof with the NVflash method. If it where me I would stick with a 1.2 boot loader, you can get the NVflash file from the link posted by jonnybr. That boot loader is ultimately the best for stability and reliability. Beastly rom is the best for a froyo rom. For visual pleasure I would lean towards VeganTab. Granted HW accel. is not the greatest, its a hacked version, but it is a 2.3 Gingerbread rom. A lot of potential with that particular rom. For me I currently am using DRH ICS since I don't really use my camera for anything special. This thing is more or less my touch screen netbook. Happy hunting.
I have been having many issues with my Verizon Samsung Fascinate currently running the 2.3.5 update and I've read on a post somewhere through searching Google that rooting it would make it not only run the way it should be faster. That it is mostly the Verizon software installed on the phone. I have never attempted anything like this and will honestly admit I'm quite scared of screwing it up. Has anyone done this with ease at a good success rate? Any advice good or bad or things that I should look out for?
Thank you!!
I was you a few months ago. Rooting did not really speed up my phone, but it did allow me to do other cool stuff, like block all ads. If you have more time and energy, you can install an ICS ROM like THS or AOKP. Those will speed up your phone quite a bit. As a general rule, nothing in Droidstyle guide will steer you wrong.
Just follow droidsyles guide and you will be all fine. It doesn't hurt to ask questions. There is a good chance you will screw up your phone at some point, but most of us have. It is pretty hard to brick these phones. Also, nice to see someone on here from out neck of the woods!

had an Infuse for about a year. loved it and was suprised as to what i was able to learn. i was actually able to trouble shoot some of other peoples issues. most of it was people not following OP correctly. some of them you would think they were scoring with a girl for the first time in high school. they just plug it in and blow their load.
However, day after thankgsiving AT&T had some incredible deals for a refurbed Note. cant beat $31.
I have been learking here for almost a month and reading as i did on the Infuse. trying to gain the confidence i need to take the leap and root.
one thing i am noticing or think i am noticing.....or maybe i dont understand.
stock rooted? you can root phone but not necessarily have CWM ?
Infuse had an all in one package.
from what i am gathering.....when i flash, do i need to flash rom, modem and kernal on 3 different flashes? trying to peice a package that works best? cant say that i notice in descriptions (as with Infuse) ex ; "Joe Blows ROM
UCLB3 modem
super nuclear kernal with OC/UV
i am sure this is in the Super Everything Thread, but sometimes my brain pan does not absorb everything. thats why i read read read and i will read some more. again responses from the more experience give me confidence.
probably my hugest issue is, it seems no matter what rom i look at the main issue is random reboots or phone just shutting down. to me does this almost negate some benefits of rooting?
everybody said the Infuse was unbrickable? for the most part i beleive that, usually somebody not following directions was the problem. regardless, super easy to unbrick and return to stock.
However, when i hear, Do you have a jig? or sending phone out to have fixed, makes me wonder if the Note bricks easier and harder to unbrick. I know that if I try, i can REALLY eff something up.
dont want to do that.
i know every phone is different and every rom works differently on those phones, so i know not to ask which rom is better for me. if i decide to, i will find which rom I like the best.
my Infuse HAS grown up to be a Note and i am happy to climb aboard this forum
To root this phone you flash a kernel to the stock rom. But to do this you have to flash a replacement recovery, and that is done with a pc using Samsung's software named Odin.
i am familiar with Odin. i have used it on many occasions and am comfortable with that. however even in the reading i have done this is the first i have heard of a "replacement recovery".
this sounds as if flashing the new kernal to the stock rom is what will root the phone?
i thought the tar file is what did this.
i will keep reading until i come up 2 threads or suggestions of rooting that sound as if the process is the same.
dont misunderstand, i am not saying that anybody is wrong. i am sure all of these methods work. again, if i want to i can really screw something up. i am sure some of these different methods are some different terminology. mainly i want to feel confident and have my process firmly embedded in my mind and act it out properly.
check this post out if you want a super easy way to get started...

The stock recovery doesn't let you flash anything. So you flash the replacement recovery with Odin. You are replacing the stock with either CWR or TWRP.
Then, using the new recovery you flash the rooted kernel, or any rom you like.

i am sure i will be getting plenty of use out of that one.
appreciate your help. both you and the captain explained it very plainly and simply, eliminating any confusion.
thank you both.actually very similar to Infuse.
now i just have to decide whether i would benefit from it.
hmmmmmm
Installing the recovery is worth the trouble. Besides the romantic flashing, you can change modems, install mods, make a backup.

yeah, and i have done all that with the Infuse. other then mods, tweaks and themes, what else did i benefit from?
Infuse was on Froyo and had a multitude of ROMS and interfaces to choose from. GB, ICS and JB. i am already ICS and JB is the only step up. actually with the similarities between the two, how much am i really gaining or what am i changing?
im kind of shopping some ROMS and looking for something to catch my eye. i am not seeing too many differences. i do have a bigger screen though and i did like the tablet mode of PA. only that and CM10 were the only ones that had tablet mode there.
im really not in any hurry and there is the rumor of official JB for the Note, but i know how that went with GB for the Infuse. the pushed it out too quick and had many problems. unofficial releases were more reliable and theming was pretty cool.
once again, i appreciate the input there Ranger.
All this, but no where has it been said that you have indeed a i717 Note. This, I think is how most people find themselves with a brick. Being in the wrong device section of the forum. Trivial and redundant as it sounds no one can afford to get this confused.
:screwy:Never mind, see it now, just had to run my big mouth, didn't I ?:banghead:
BLACKSTAR XI -SGH-I717 xda-developers app SAMSUNG done right
Yeaaaah, ooops. Well there's another use for the Spen and a place to store it.
But you are correct, I have witnessed the destruction of at least ten notes and some S2's by being in the wrong forum.
This is dangerous business.
