My Prime ac adapter stopped working (the cable works fine) and was wondering while i wait for a new charger if the dock can charge through the pc. Any help or suggestions are appreciated

I know that the prime can be charged by a computer, but I never tried with the dock,to charge your tablet you must turn off it or put it in to sleep...

May I ask how? Everything Ive seen and read says that the usb doesnt put out anywhere near the power needed.
The tablet can charge on the lower 5v, but its a trickle charge and it doesnt show the charging icon. Anyone try this with the dock? Mine doesnt work but mabe theres a way...

The dock does not charge from USB.
As far as I know the Prime can indeed be charged by USB only when it is off, since when it is on it will probably consume more power than the one received from USB
For the Dock, I really dont know if it may actually charge, Id say just leave it connected and check it out a few hours later The worst that can happen is that is does not charge at all.
Nope, does not charge while docked. Actually, if I forget to plug it back into the AC adapter, it will lose battery life over an extended amount of time...
Now it does charge through the PC usb with only the tablet, but as previously stated, it is a trickle charge.

The TFP must be completely off to charge from a USB port, and then it will take a long time.
The TFP requires 15v to charge at the normal rate. A USB port puts out maximum of 5v.

So, i put my TFP on the charger last night.. it was around 5% battery. I check on it now, and its completely off, the charger is hot and smells like burning plastic and my TFP is dead.
I'm not getting any response when i try plugging in the USB to any USB to 110V charger..
Anyone else experience something like this? I've had no problems with the device so far

anyone have a support number i can call as well? ughhh

They are identical.
Also: Besides it being USB 3.0 (Requiring a special charger), the Asus chargers are chipped to recognise Asus devices and deliver 15v verses the standard USB 5v so that they charge faster. The TFP wont charge at all on only 5v. It's the same reason it wont charge from your computer.

wrong again the dock pulls the 15v at 1.2A the reason it will not charge or chages very slow is your usb is outputting like 500 mAor less without the flow of electrons which current is it will not charge very fast at all! 5v is fine for it! but the charger charging at 5v pulls 2.1A
the tablet also trys to pull more current when it is almost dead! so try to keep it above 20% to avoid this

Ok, my Gigabyte motherboard puts out 2.5A specifically with tablets in mind. If it was charging, my lockscreen would say "Charging..." on it, which it does not. No need to be a rude know-it-all with your "Wrong again..." attitude. Just trying to help out here.
The Prime will charge on a USB but it has to be turned off. I've confirmed this and the manual says this as well. As far as my charger goes it gets warm but not hot or smells. One thing I do when charging is turn off the tablet.

Ok. That seems correct. Thanks for verifying.
It does take a lot longer to charge on the USB though. I can go from 20% to 100% in a couple of hours on the wall charger with the Prime turned off. On USB and the Prime turned off I was at approximately 15%, went to lunch and did some other things, came back about 1.5 hours and when I turned the Prime back on it was a little over 50%.
Might be faster on my Desktop since I have the high power USB ports. I will try it and post results eventually.
How is everyone charging their prime with the keyboard docked? My battery was dead on both last night so I plugged the charger into the keyboard expecting it to be full this morning but is is only on 34% keyboard and 84% tablet. Is this normal? I did leave the tablet on whist charging but I don't have anything running and screen was off (lid closed)
Meybe it is bug... when you again drain dock+tablet battery to 0% try to charge if you have again this problem please send me a message to pm.. sorry for english

Check the cable is in properly and the charge light is on. My first prime was sent back for charging problems. After a couple of days the slightest knock would move the cable enough to stop it charging.

Keep in mind that this is not a parallel battery configuration. When Docked the tablet charges from the dock and the dock charges from the power adaptor so its perfectly normal to see the tablet at a higher charge than the dock. I always charge with it docked and it stays docked unless I just happen to play a game requiring it to be undocked.
Also how long was it charging?
I never run both completely dead and have found that generally speaking if I plug it in when I go to bed its fully charged the next morning. While I do use it quite a bit Ive yet to completely exhaust the batteries.
It is something like this (others please post corrections as needed):
ATP charges when charger is plugged into an outlet.
ATP charges from the dock when battery level hits 70% or just below (I haven't noticed which yet) until it is near full.
ATP charges from the dock when the dock is plugged into an outlet using the charger.
The TF101 would charge from the dock whenever plugged in, so this is nice IMHO.
TF101 plugged into a USB 2 port = trickle charge on the TF101, so I assume same since the dock not charging via USB 2.0 was noted in my ATP dock's manual.

I tried to plug into my prime to charge as I usually do when it gets low on battery and it refused to detect that it was plugged in. I've tried with multiple outlets and yes I am using the official asus wall charger and cable. It only charges very, very, very slowly if the tablet is off and plugged into the wall charger. In no case does it detect that it is actually plugged in though.
I see that there is a system update, not sure if that would fix it since I can't do it because I'm at 8% battery currently.
I'm on 9.4.2.14 right now
thanks in advance
I just updated this morning to the .15 and now I can't charge, so don't know if that will help you. Same as you I tried multiple outlets and nothing; reboot didn't help either. Prime was working great for me for what I need, now this. Will try the charging while shutdown. I see an RMA soon. Charging while off only is not an option, it's an inconvenience.

I have had the same problem after receiving .15 this past weekend. I have tested other cables and wall chargers and know that's not the issue. I also did a factory reset to no avail.
Any ideas?
Check the charger or get a new charger.
I've been having the same problem.. tablet will not charge either. Luckily or me i scored on a dock. And now the only way my tablet will charge is when i connect the tablet to the dock and use the wall charger to simultaneously charge both tablet and dock. Without dock, tablet will not charge. Maybe trickle charge only when screen is off. Gotta me a software glitch. Can't be usb cable or ac adapter as with dock, everything works perfectly.
Im having the same problem. Prime doesnt charge while connected to wall charger...it seems to only charge when the screen is off and connected to a pc. When this first happened a few days ago i left the prime powered off and plugged it into the wall to charge overnght which it actually charged but it hasnt charged again since. So ive been at 10-20 all day and barely get to use it so it wont die as i checked the battery stats and it seems the prime is consuming a whole lot of power in a short amount of time...if its not the charger then im screwed since i unlocked the bootloader...this issue needs attention as its effecting multiple users so hopefully someone somewhere can either confirm that they tried using a new charger and what the results were or someone else has a charger that you know works and try using your prime on another persons tablet..it seemed to have started when i had "switch me" app installed and running a guest profile i noticed my pc stopped communicating with my prime and it all went downhill from there..
It's definitely not the charger in my case. I'm waiting to hear back from Asus, I'll update when I get their response.
usb be plughin?
yes, in case prime is turned off...I'm in this mode as my charger is broken.
So how long does it take to charge through USB. Same amount, twice as long, or more?
What does 'usb be plughin?' mean?
It doesn't charge if the Prime is turned on, but I think it does it it's off.

A considerable ammount more, look more towards it being a full day charging and it wont charge while the screen is on.
USB sockets dont have the power needed really so its more of a trickle charge.
5v - USB Vs 15v Power.
100Ma(0.1a) Vs 1200Ma (1.2a)
My prime can be charged through usb,but much slower than AC charger
I doubt it. You need to supply current at a voltage higher than the battery's voltage. Prime's battery = 7.4V, USB = 5V.
Edit: According to this post, the OG TF can use [email protected] or [email protected] (or conceivably [email protected]). Presumably Prime charging is same as OG TF. Suggest doing as SlimDan22 said and try an aftermarket iPad charger.

On the power button of the Prime when using the wall charger there is a tiny pinhole which lights up orange/red when charging, green when done. I don't know if using the USB charging method if it comes on.

Actually, if you use a USB 3.0 port, the Prime will very slowly charge even while awake; it does not show the charging icon or the lights however.
It may also require the tablet to at least be in Deep Sleep to do so, but I left my Prime plugged into my desktop's 3.0 port overnight at one point and awoke to a fully-charged tablet.

Would [email protected] damage the Prime? How about [email protected]?
i have this tablet for a couple days now, when i plug the power adapter to the mains the power adapter gets really hot.
does anyone have the same result or is just normal? i know that the adapter obviously will get hot, but it seems a bit to hot, just the adapter the usb cable is fine and so is the tablet
Its normal. If it gets to hot it shuts off. I hear you have to put it in the freezer to attempt to bring it back.

well, i just dont want to wake up one morning and find the all lot burned.
but it does get really hot
Noticed the same thing with mine. I'm actually on my second pad for other reasons, but I didn't notice the charger getting as hot with my first one. But it only seems to get hot when actively charging. I've checked it after letting it sit still plugged in, but after it finished charging and it was fine.
I just try not to leave it charging if I'm sleeping or going out. Although, I forgot to unplug it this time...

No. Other threads in this forum tell you why.
the reason the charger gets so hot is it's 15 volts
and it takes minimum 12 volts for the tablet to kick into charging mode
so to answer your question
a usb port does charge the tablet, but usb is only 5 volts
so it will not show charging
and it will probably take 24 hrs to fully charge
Mine gets hot while charging but once it hits 100% it cools back down. I don't charge it while sleeping for this reason. Also according to the manual the PC will charge it bult as previously mentioned it takes longer. The tablet must be powered off when charging this way or it won't charge.

Same as other itt, it will heat up when charging, but if it's left in the wall unplugged from the tab/dock it cools back down.
Perhaps it needs 12v for full charge speed, but the 300 also trickle charges when plugged into a computer USB port.
i have notice that, when it finishes charging, that just cools down, i was just wondering did i get a faulty one, but as ye say its normal
thanks for all the replys
Luca
even there the charger gets very hot, so it is normal, also, we are going to have very hot temps these days, (40°C here)...
just be sure to not plug it near easy flammable things!
ciao
Yes we have noticed the charger gets very hot might have something to do with fast recharge time the device has

Good evening,
On my charger i notice it is wrting : "output 5v--2A or 15v --1.2A"
This mind that i can use the charger for any phone that charge usualy wiht 5V ?? Do the charger "swap" the voltage by him self if it's not connect to the tablet ???
I don't want to burn my HTC, but to have one charger for the tablet and the phone will be good when travelling
Thanks

The charger that comes with the Transformer is dual-purpose. If you plug in a Transformer tablet, it'll output the 15V to rapid-charge your Transformer. If you plug in a USB device, it'll output 5V at 2A to rapid-charge your USB device.
If you're wondering how it can tell the difference, Pin #7 on the USB3 Transformer cable is grounded -- this is how the charger can tell the difference between a Transormer and an ordinary USB device.

It's not a non-standard connector -- it's a USB 3.0 connector.
If you use a USB 3.0 extension cable, it will work. If you use a non-USB 3.0 extension cable, the charger won't see that pin 7 is grounded, so you'll just get 5V instead of 15V. There's no bi-directional communication between the two.
The Transformer will charge when it sees 12V to 15V on what's typically the 5V pin.
The Asus charger will output 15V (earlier units were 12V) when it senses pin 7 is grounded.
Also, if you'd like to build your own power supply -- get any old female USB connector, and send 12V to 15V on pin 1 instead of 5V, and you've got yourself an Asus Transformer charger. Just don't plug anything else into it, since there's no safeguard to prevent 12-15V going into a 5V device. I've painted mine orange so I don't mistake it.
Hi, my Transformer pad won't charge normally when I connect it to the power adapter direclty - it doesn't show it's charging (though I can tell it is, because after some half an hour it had 2 % more of battery)... can it be that the charger doesn't recognize the tab and gives only 5V? Why? It works normally when I charge it on the docking station (through the power adapter), and the same cable works normally when I use it to transfer media to the pad from the PC...
P.S. When conneted to the power adapter directly, the orange light on the power button of the pad doesn't go on... it only goes on when the pad is on the dock and the power adapter is plugged into it.
Any ideas?
