Hi Guys and Gals. I am a noob trying to update my Galaxy s2 to ICS and have hit a brick wall. I received the message that an update was available and downloaded it OTA, but the install failed for some reason. When i plug in to Kies i get the " Device doesn't support software upgrades via Kies" message.
After a little searching it seems the main reason for this might be a modified Kernel. The phone is an unbranded XSA model and i have never modified it in anyway. I have no idea if the dealer did any modifications before shipping.
What i need to know is, how do i tell if it has a stock kernel or not, and do i need to re flash the entire firmware to get it.
This is all the info on the phone.
Baseband version I9100XXKI4
Kernel Version [email protected]#2
PDA I9100XWKK2
Phone I9100XXKI4
CSC I9100XSAKE3
Build Info Friday Nov 11 18:05:58 KST 2011
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated and sorry the lack of knowledge.
I believe it still is the stock kernel, also XXKI4 is a stock baseband version for Gingerbread. Looks like you didn't get updated. Best thing to do is do it on this website if you want the proper ICS experience, and not all of that Touchwiz nonsense Samsung loves.
Chris.
Unless you flash custom roms or kernels it always has Stock kernel .
Use CHECKFUS to see if their is an ICS update for your phone if not you wait or flash stock ICS roms from here .
jje
Thanks for the replies. Just wondering what the issue with Kies would be? I am a little unsure as to which ICS version to get and also, what will happen to all my data, settings etc..
Backup your data factory reset phone and trie updates again .
Fails then flash stock firmware for your location from XDA ,

Get the correct official firmware version from samfirmwares.Com.
Flash using ODIN.

I got same problem, did you get answered?
If your reason to go back to factory condition is because the phone is being returned for warranty purposes, then you need to know what ROM was on it when you got it. Warranty returns should only accept the ROM it was supplied with or official updates of the same ROM. If it was a Orange UK ROM, then they will only accept a Orange UK ROM. Branded ROMs and Samsung (unbranded) Stock ROMs are in the Original Android Development section on here. Also the Custom Counter would have to be reset.
If the reason is just to get back to a Samsung Stock, then go to the Original Android Development section on here and find the ROM that is for your region.

Please read Intratech's Official Firmware thread here => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
At least the two first posts are relevant to you.
To check, what Firmware/ROM is officially released by Samsung for your region, you can use Check Fus Downloader from here => http://fus.nanzen.se/.
P.S.: You do not need the repartition option in Odin.
If you want to be sure to have a "clean" stock ROM on your phone, just go into recovery mode (Volume UP + Home + Power) and choose to make a factory reset after flashing the ROM.
Good luck !

What do you mean by choose to make a factory reset after flashing the rom?
I have the same problem..but whenever I am flashing the official fw downloaded from Intratech's post, I got failed..I am not sure what's the problems. I tried a few roms from there, every thing just failed and my phone now show a triangle icon which cannot be booted. i Have to use the usb jig to erase the downloading information, then flash any kernel to make the phone reboot then it can be only booted into the rom before flashed.
can someone help ??

Try re-download the firmware with your PC antivirus off. I had trouble with Kaspersky corrupting the download (no warning either, false positive).
Then try flash with Odin again.

hi i am currently, according to Kies, using the latest version available to me on my Galaxy S2 (i9100) which is unlocked and i bought from the carphone warehouse.
The fimware I am using is 2.3.4 and my Kernel is 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKI4-CL575468
PDA:KI4 / PHONE:KI1 / CSC: KH1 (CPW)
however i know that this isn't the latest official release for the UK. I have researched numerous threads and i have tried changing me CSC using #*272*IMEI# however i am locked to CPW. So i then did more research and have found that i need to debrand my galaxy s2 from CPW to XEU to get the latest generic unlocked UK firmware. Can someone please tell me how to do this without using #*272*IMEI# because that doesn't work?
Your phone is unlocked but you want to unlock it ???
CPW is about the best CSC for the UK as it covers more networks ..
You will not get an update via KIES by changing your CSC ..
You can update and debrand by flashing a stock rom from the stock rom thread but you will may lose the KIES update path from then on.
Stock Roms .and csc

yes but if i remain on CPW i will stay on android 2.3.4 where as if i switch to XEU i get the latest updates since it is the most generic UK firmware? and surely if i change my CSC then Kies will offer me an update to 2.3.6

CSC has nothing to do with updates .
KIES reads the firmware and hardware and vendor codes from the phone .
Two paths to updates official via KIES you wait for vendor release
Or XDA via ODIN using latest stock Samsung firmware
Third possible is to use CheckFus to download firmware or find a way to change the codes on the phone .
jje
okay well howcome if i have unlocked handset i am still on 2.3.4 when there are people in the UK with 2.3.5? (sorry i am a noob)

You have a set of codes on your phone that determine its vendor and ID etc
Kies reads those codes
O2UK xxxx O2UK 11xxxx etc etc .
Then looks for that firmware on the server if it matches it downloads if it does not match it cannot download . So unless the vendor has updated then you have no download . Its the phone vendor who updates .
CheckFus and SpoofFW are two roous that may bypass the Kies checkup .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1318683&highlight=spooffw
But this is XDA Developers and we dont use KIES .
jje
okay how do i know who my phone vendor is? i think it would be easier for me to just install cyanogenmod 7.1 however i am having trouble because when i followed all the instructions, i successfully rooted my phone installed ROM manager. however when i installed clockwork recovery and rebooted my phone it loaded android recovery mode 3e and says signature verification required. i gave up after a few attempts and thought it was due to my kernel? does the kernel version affect cyanogenmod? i.e. do newer versions of CM require a newer kernel?
You have Carphone Warehouse CSC hence no updates as most carriers tend to provide the updates.
Root with CF-ROOT and use customs or just flash a different firmware newer version with uk CSC with ODIN.
Sent from the valley of the shadows....
how do i CF-Root? and cant i just change my CSC so i get the newer updates if cpw doesn't release any?
No for reasons jje already said.
CF-ROOT is in original development and has concise instructions its very simple
There are lot's if stickys too take some timeout and read up as most information there will help you regarding learning about device.
Sent from the valley of the shadows....
okay then can you answer to questions for me? does a newer kernel affect the cyanogen mod and can you tell me how to install CM7.1 using CF root seeing as it didn't work last time due to signature error?
bomskiboy said:

Do you mean can you put another kernel in CM a rom that already has a kernel
and can you tell me how to install CM7.1 using CF root seeing as it didn't work last time due to signature error
The instructions are on the first page .

First time flashing CyanogenMod 7 to the Samsung Galaxy S II, or coming from another ROM?
Root the device and install ClockworkMod Recovery.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Perform a NANDroid backup of your current ROM.
Copy rom to internal SD card .
Format the system, data & cache partitions of your device via mounts and storage recover
Perform a factory reset.
Flash CyanogenMod.
Flash CM a second time .

first time and does whatever kernel you currently are on affect CM mod? or does CM install a new mod?
BTW 2.3.4 is the latest XEU firmware so changing to this won't make any difference to your firmware version number.

Hello everybody,
I have a SGS2 from Bell Canada. I upgraded the stock firmware following various guides here. I managed to root it and to unlock it using Galaxy S unlock from the market.
The phone is running well now, battery life is about 2-3 days (I have Juice Defender and it helps).
I would like to upgrade to ICS but after reading a few threads I am very confused...
My first question is: will I lose my unlock?
Then, Kies does not recognize my phone any more; should I flash back to stock and wait for ICS to be available for my carrier and take it from there? Or should I go through Odin and just flash one of the ROMs released for Europe (or another region).
I am even willing to pay for Mobile Odin Pro and flash it directly from the phone, I read that it's safe and you don't lose any data, although other people were saying that it's better to just start from scratch.
Right now my phone info is the following:
PRODUCT CODE: GT-I9100LKMBMC
pda: I9100XWKK5
PHONE: I9100XXKI3
CSC: I9100XEUKH2
Model: GT-I9100 (shouldn't it have a M at the end?)
Android version: 2.3.6
Baseband version: I9100xxki3
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-I9100xwkk5-CL754841
[email protected] #2
Build number GINGERBREAD.XWKK5
So, could anyone point me to the right direction?
Thanks in advance
I think you have the international sgs2. I have tried flashing the xxlpq ics update and then flashed a custom rom but I encountered a lot of issues. I think the ics update still has lots of bugs so I rolled back to gingerbread using checkrom revoHd v6. So as of the moment all you need to do is root your phone with Odin and CF-root kernel and wait for a stable ics rom

You have a whole lot of options to play with, it all depends how comfortable you feel and what do you want.
For starters, you have upgraded from KG2 to KK5, which is a firmware other then Bell, as Bell never released and update. Because of this upgrade your phone says it’s a I9100 and not I9100M. Mine says the same after I upgraded as well.
I updated my Bell KG2 to ICS (LP7) and so far I don’t have any problems with it. I did have an issue with calls going straight to voicemail, so I installed the LPQ modem, and things have been well. People have complained about battery life, but I don't think it’s bad. I would say pretty close to stock GB if not better.
What you can do is make a Nandroid backup and then upgrade to ICS. You can do it through Odin Mobile if you like, as it won't upgrade your Custom Rom Counter, if that is an item of concern to you. There are other ways to clear the custom rom counter, if you go through ODIN.
I would suggest doing a factory reset with CWM, and clear cache/dalvik cahce. This will be like setting up a new phone. You can also upgrade without the reset that and it will keep all your settings and unlock. You will lose root though, but you can re-root.
I have done it both ways, and I went with the reset in my 2nd try just for my peace of mind. I didn’t have any problems without the reset either.
If you don’t like it, you can always go back to your Nandroid backup, which is what you currently have using CWM.
If you want original bell firmware, then you have to wait until bell releases it.
In the end you are the one to decide. Hope this helps.
Once u unlocked network it won't relock after u flash/update software

Hi everyody, thanks for the answers...
I guess I want to try the stock first and then move on to some custom roms...
I read a thread about the XEO Rom and was going to try that
What do you think about this?
@sahib - thanks, I was not aware of that...
@warhawk_la - thanks a lot, very helpful bits and pieces; what is the difference between the LP7 rom and the XEO and where did you get the files from (I see tht you flashed a different modem)

Your choice but rom for your region and actual phone is always best even as a backup for warranty .
Personally i would not jump on the ICS bandwagon yet .

download odin 1.85, official XXLPQ rom, siyah kernel.
flash the lpq rom first
flash the siyah kernel second
now you have last ics and root.
Hey guys,
I'm a real noob at roms, rooting etc but i followed a tutorial on Youtube which lead me to root my phone using Odin and Superoneclick. I have no idea what this did as i didn't notice a difference on my phone but now ICS is released for my Galaxy SII which is TmobileUk branded. However, when i check on Kies, it says New Firmware Is Available but when i click Firmware Upgrade button then nothing happens. When I click Firmware upgrade and initialization under tools i get the error GT-I9100 does not support initialising. When reading on forums i found out this is because of me rooting so i searched on how to unroot Galaxy S2 but everything comes up with Unroot and installing Stock Kernal etc but i am not sure if i have installed a kernal but i can remember i put XWKDD file in ODIN.
Android Version: 2.3.3
Baseband Version: I9100BOKF1
Kernal Version: 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKDD-CL161513 [email protected] #2
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.BOKF3
and i have no MOD VERSION which i fugured is for a rom.
When typing *#1234# i get these versions:
PDA: I9100BOKF3
PHONE: I9100BOKF1
CSC: I9100TMUKF1
I have read some posts and found UK Tmobile have BOKF3 etc from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113928
but i do not know what todo with it.
Also i just installed an app called Ginger Unroot which has unrooted my phone so if i need to root or do anything can you explain please and will any of the steps wipe my phone (apps, data etc)
I really need this help
Thanks in advance
RE
Im real desperate
What most people do one they root their phones is install ROMs based off of the official release. It's like getting the release, and guaranteeing root access. I think that's a better way. You have more freedom. Otherwise, you can upgrade and pray that Samsung doesn't release something that breaks your rooting capabilities. Check the forums for a ROM based off if the official OTA update and install that. If you have a custom recovery installed, (Which you should have if you rooted correctly) add far as I know, the update won't work.

Hey there thanks for replying Can i find out if i have a custom rom or kernal as i dont know but i did unroot by an app called Ginger Unroot and checked with basic root checker which confirmed that i no longer have root access but the error still comes up. So if an OTA Update is released, then can I download that?
Ok I went to update my phone through kies and forgot that i have a different kernal than before. Kies told me i cant update through it. I assume thats cause im using a different kernal.
Here is the details from my phone.
Model - GT-I9100
Android Version - 4.0.4
Baseband Version - I9100XXLQ6
Kernal Version - 3.0.15-I9100XWLPT-CL941023
Build Number - IMM76D.XWLPT
I am locked on O2 UK i think.
I have noticed since flashing this kernal last july that my phone performance has been poor in terms of it switching off by itself and so on.
What I want to know is how can i get the original firmware back on my phone so i can update via kies. And I also want to know how to install Jelly Bean on this phone and how I go about it?
Can anyone help?
Thanks
Aaron.
Hey,
i have found out that the latest rom O2 UK has released is android 4.0.4
you can download the firmware from here
http://www.hotfile.com/dl/159884527/f4d3bd8/I9100XWLPD_I9100O2ULP7_O2U.zip.html
You will have to flash that with Odin, just unzip the file and put it in the pda section on Odin.
After that kies should be able to recognize your phone,
if you want to update to 4.0.4 from kies you will have to pick an earlier firmware from
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/1/?model=GT-I9100&pcode=O2U#firmware
same precedure as above for flashing it, i have not used kies since i bought my gs1 2 years ago but i believe it will work
Good luck friend!
Thanks for that dude, much appreciated
Is this a Jelly Bean ROM or just original stock ROM for O2??????????
no, just Ice Cream Sandwich, but it is stock Touchwiz. (Samsung Rom)
but the Jelly Bean update must be around the corner i guess.
if not you could allways flash a stock Samsung JellyBean rom that is open for europe,
the main difference may be a different modem and that there is no O2 apps prebaked into the Rom.
i think the one for nordic counties should work well since you are in the uk,
you can find it at
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/1/?model=GT-I9100&pcode=0#firmware
Thanks again man, you have been very very helpful.
Thanks
no problem mate, glad i could help you out,
and please let me know if it works with kies afterwards
What will the difference in modems do? Will there be any affect on what I can do with my phone?
What is the modem for? Internet connection i take it?
Kies doesn't let you update with the nordic counties rom at all. But it works sweet on my S2 so I'm happy.
