[DISCUSSION] Our phones' BATTERY LIFE - Galaxy Ace S5830 General

Hi all, after a lots of pots from a lots of users claiming their battery is great or their battery is ok and even that their battery is a crap... I decided to open this thread to share my opinion with you all and see how many of you think like me.
Here it comes:
For me, BATTERY LIFE is how GOOD-OK-BAD our battery behaves and how much it lasts WHILE USING THE PHONE.
Having looooong periods of deep sleep is just the Stand-By 640hrs that Samsung itself offers with its ACE.
Under heavy use, ACE is supposed to last at least 11hrs using 2g and 6hrs using 3g.
Me just quoting Samsung and GSM ARENA
Click to collapse
If you do the math, most of the people that claim to have a HUGE battery life have their phones on DEEP SLEEP (Stand By) MOST OF THE TIME, plus they don't use 3g but WI-FI.
So, when they say: HEY BRO, I unplugged my phone 1 day ago and my battery is still at 30% and then they put a graphic on it you can see that about 20 hours the phone have been deep sleeping. Then you use it and PUFFF!!! A huge percent down...
I don't know if you know what I mean, english is not my first languaje... But what I'm trying to say is...
Battery life is most of the times the same WHEN USING THE PHONE!

Dude stop worrying too much abt battery... Simple battery rule. Charge it when its less than 20%... Let it drain by its own.. Then charge again... There s something called life explore it...

WOW!! What a superb reply... Great, wonderful, splendid...
You're so wise... OMG I can't even believe you took time to reply my request... Thank you Oh Lord!!!
Sigh!

My battery drains so fast on my home wi-fi I tend to browse whilst charging for most of the time (I'm sure it's not recommended). Wish I knew where people get the improved stats for wi-fi over 2g/3g from.

Of course samsung is gonna claim great battery life, they have to sell.
On my experience, i use the phone constantly with 3g for whatsapp and music all the time. I still charge it every night and thats ok. Its a smartphone, a micro computer. Unplugg your lap top and see how long it lasts! If you cannot get a day of battery, youre using your phone too much. The biggest battery hog is your screen, turn it off when not using, lower brightness, dont use 3g and 2g at the same time. Otherwise, get a stupidphone and marvel at your 5 day battery life.

The point about WiFi/3G/2G and battery stats is that if the phone isn't having to work hard to get its connection then it won't drain so much battery. So for example, I have almost no 3G coverage and no WiFi hotspot for miles, urgo if I have them both on the phone will search hard for them and drain battery. I have only 2G allowed and that works for me.
Technically if I had a WI-FI hotspot I should use that because it should provide better coverage than either 2G or 3G, and so the phone won't have to work so hard to get connectivity.
How strong is the signal for your WI-FI, is it very changeable?

I sit about 2m below it and it locks in seconds, varies between 2 and 3 bars on indication. Perceived drain is battery falls from 100% to charge warning in 3 - 4hrs approx.

Data switches off automatically when you are connected to the internet thru wi-fi!

my ace drains battery fastest when i play games, when playing any game 10-15 minutes my battery drains for like 10%

i have good battery life ,,about 36hours when using wifi

the problem of my battery life only happens when the phone is on. I've tried turning it off for a few days and the battery held up too long. So my advice for the battery last long, its always keep the phone off, and use it to shoot on someone's head (devs?). You may even withdraw the battery, lasts longer without recharging.
I suggest that someone makes a rom that doesnt work and keep the phone off, and we will have long battery life
Please hit tanks if I didnt help you

In my case, I've had the best battery life duration with StockRom Lite, AceOne (this seems to fly in my phone).
The AceOne rom seems to "survive" between 16- 18 hours in my chase listening music, checking some emails with 3G (not 16 hours, time by time).
I've installed a rom made by Nathan (TouchWiz) and I was worried about the battery's duration, but since I've installed nims kernel it works better, I'm gonna view how it works

Why is my battery so crappy?

Tried couple of different roms kernel combos and even when I remove sim card and using only WiFi I can see the battery percentage drop by the minute. If screen on its when battery really suffer. I already changed battery and still same ****
What can I do or try ... Must of the time I use a g nex but I like the rezound camera better and of course beats audio battery last ne around 4-5 hours. Ridiculous.

I'm satisfied with the extended battery. It impresses me daily and I never have to worry about 15000 tasker rules to try and save battery. I just leave everything on all the time.
I never used the stock battery.
There is plenty of conflicting information about battery stats, but I've found bump charging and clearing battery stats to be helpful on other phones, even if that's just a perception thing.

I have crappy battery life on stock with minimal use, bought the extended battery and it was much better. Only issue.. i bought an otterbox defender lol.. so had to go back to stock so just frequent recharging.
I think the answer is because the battery just sucks. Its way undersized for this phone. It's hard to get a real handle on it though because everyone thinks of their usage has normal or heavy, so the accounts you read are tottaly irrelevant to how you use it.
I normally am screen on and 3G for 45-60 each morning for some news and slacking before getting to work. That will eat half my battery, which is completely unacceptable IMO. On a weekend when I pick it up a couple times an hour for a this or that, I still only get like 10-12 hours.
Our only hope is that the next phone that takes the place of the rezound has a higher capacity battery that will work for us like the deal with the thunderbolt. Otherwise, ill continue to haul around adapters and my New Trent battery whenever I'm going to be away from home for more than a few hours.
Incredible. And I hates extended battery unless they low profile like the g nex one! Anyway. Gonna try wipe battery in cwm ...thanks

Use Amon ra or one of the utilities to wipe battery stats from the market or even better delete it yourself manually.

This. There is really no reason to have the screen brightness set to over 20% When I was turning LTE off I would normally get around 20 hours on CleanROM. That's with 2 hours of screen on time and moderate use throughout the day. Been leaving LTE on and getting 14 to 16.

maybe in a pitch black room set the brightness down that low.
I use auto, but I also have 2 extended batteries and gave up on power mgmt a long time ago.
Hopefully, htc will take a page from moto and make phones with 3000mah+ nonremovable batteries. I would be ok with that.

Run my screen that low constantly unless I'm in the bright sun. Auto is a battery killer. Have no desire to use an extended battery. If they started using fixed batteries they would be driving away a lot of customers. Motorola is the last manufacturer anyone needs to emulate!

really? I am intrigued by the razr maxx simply because of the 3300mah battery. Not to mention, everyone raves about the new software moto phones have that allow you to set profiles.
I just don't like the pentile screens.
And I don't think a 3300mah battery would drive away many people. That battery would last 99% of the smartphone users over 24 hours.
The 3300 mah sounds great. The fact of not being removable is a modder's nightmare. Moto's encrypted bootloaders and god awful motoblur are major turn offs. Not to mention that all their handsets since the DX have a terrible feel.
The extended battery is nice, but I only use it when I know I'll need it because it destroys the contours of the device and makes it even more of a brick than it already is.

When I first got the phone (on release day) I was pulling 25 hours with the stock battery. I'd have the brightness on auto and use wifi whenever possible. While I was sleeping I would put it in airplane mode so I could use it as an alarm clock and not have anything else wake me up.

That made me laugh, that's like having a gorgeous car but never taking it out of the garage. You have a beautiful screen but at a brightness that low you can't appreciate it. With the extended battery I leave mine at full brightness or 75%, with the standard battery I keep it 60% or less.

So is i717 just flat out a battery killing device with no hope?

The phone awesome but you'd think with a large battery. ..battery life would be stellar! !

Eric
Do not use Hyperion, QCell or any other cheap ebay/amazon batteries. They are only about 1700mah at best and will kill your phone under moderate use in about 60 to 90 minutes. Maybe less.
I'm on stock GB rooted with all bloat frozen via TB and I can get through a whole day of use on one Samsung OEM batt with light to med usage.

This is no where near the average!
And you seriously must not use your phone, like at all
17 hours at 73% is a bit extreme, but so is 2% per minute drain.
I think I can represent a fairly average user. I usually check email, weather and a little reddit during my morning routine. BT is always on and connects to my car while I drive to work for about 30 minutes. I average about 2 or 3 long phone calls a day on my phone. Some text messaging throughout the day and some short internet sessions on my phone while at work. Plus a few minutes here or there for Draw Something. I stream Google Music every day on my way home for about 30 minutes. Once at home my usage varies depending on what I do for the evening. But so far I usually find I have about 50% battery life when going to bed. I actually made it through Friday and Saturday on a single charge.
So I would say that this phone has above average battery life for an android device. It isn't stellar, but it isn't bad either. My Infuse could eek out about the same life with less use. My N1 never made it even close to this length. My buddy's MyTouch 4g can't usually make it a full 24 hours.

Considering the screen size, the battery isn't actually that big. It sounds enormous due to other phones with almost a thousand less mAH, but I just bought a bunch of extra batteries. The removable battery feature is the biggest reason I switched to Android.
LTE is a HUGE battery killer. I turned off wireless since LTE is SOOOOOO much faster than any wireless connection I'm on. I'd be lucky if I could get through a workday without it being below 50% by the end of a work day and completely dead by 7pm.
Turn on wireless and it's now almost 3pm and still have 78% left.
Lets face one fact everyone is different. .everyone claims this and that and regardless of what carrier or what device people will.never see the batt life they would really.like to see.Say like 50% after 3 days heavy usage that would be a thing we.may see in.smartphones in a few years. Android o.s will always be battery harsh. Its a huge topic.
Another point.on all the claims of Great and terrible batt life has to do with the fact. .people just dont truly get how others may use there devices so heavily..streaming vid...music...downloads...mail sync...Some maybe few truly use there phones 24 hrs non stop. There probably will never be a batt drain solution for those people. So telling one person that batt is fine with all this moderate usage coming from a person who uses there data more like "lightly" rather than heavy, doesnt help a person who is a heavy heavy data user.Neither sides will ever come to an agreement.

Wow that is awesome! I'm getting home with a full days use at around 50-60%- It seems to be better than my captivate was on life that's for sure.
I have had mine for two weeks- On side note? hehehe Does cycling a battery really prove to get better life as time goes by or is it a old school story about batteries use to have memory etc... and now they don't?
Modern batteries don't have memory but their battery meters can become decalibrated which can be fixed with a full change cycle. Nonetheless, I don't recommend doing that too often (I only do it like once a year) since that's bad for the battery.

I still suspect this may be router related though. When I had my crappy Netgear, I would get strange periods of battery drain on my SGS2 when WIFI was left on. That just about all disappeared once I upgraded to an Asus RT-N16 running Tomato, and now, I don't get any drain on my SGS3 as well when I leave WIFI (set to "Always On" under Advanced WIFI Settings) idling.

I too think it's router related. It can possibly be due to Wifi dual banding in some routers that support it. Faster internet with less battery life.

Better battery life?

i remembered there was a flashable zip to make the battery life better, but I can't seem to find it.
anyways what i've done so far is put the brightness to low, turn off gps , put the animations to .5 , sync emails every 2 hours , only have one widget running , installed the latest faux kernel .
It helped a bit , but nothing too noticeable. Any more things i can do to make it better? any tweaks or anything?
which rom are you usingg?? turn off auto sync, disable check for update.. also your battery can wear out over time, can purchase new battery... most people recommend anker battery,

It helped a bit , but nothing too noticeable. Any more things i can do to make it better? any tweaks or anything?

I'm using juice defender with good success. NRG ROM has pretty good battery life anyway (compared to stock).

i always felt like JuiceDefender killed the battery more than conserving it. Along with everything else thats been stated, I usually use System Tuner to lower the clock speed when the screen is off, helps save battery when idle.

It did not seem to work with my HD2, and I did not use it originally with my Ruby. But now it seems to work fine. I mostly use it to turn off the mobile modem (seems to be my biggest battery drain) except when the screen is off and once per hour to sync my various programs. Using this configuration I can last all day, even with my cheaper replacement batteries.
But nothing is going to make the device go if one is keeping the screen on (like gaming). 3-4 hours max in that setting, and I still carry two spare batteries for those times my son gets his hands on the device.

I don't know what you are talking about but I get crazy good battery life... Here are my stats from 2 days ago I took a screen shot of... And I don't use juice defender and I am using teamvipers sense 4.1 rom and i have around 180 user apps installed on my phone. I just don't use data but my wifi is on all the time (don't have a data plan) and I play temple run and empire defense a lot hence high screen on time. Major thing about the rom I'm using is that it's very efficient when idle. I also keep my capacitative button lights off permanently as I think that also helps my battery life. Only downside is that I don't have working bluetooth in this rom

Well, yours is unique. Most people have pretty poor battery life. I've had 3 Amazes and all of them really drained the battery when the screen was on. However, as I said, my GSM modem is what really drains the device as well. If you live near a cell tower or in a downtown area with good T-Mobile, the modem won't "hunt" and will deliver better life.
Also, the stock battery is the best, in my experience.

I am actually on vacation and using aunt's sim who lives in new York and i live in Wisconsin (Marshfield) and t mobile doesn't exist here literally I am always using at&t signal and I have relatively spotty signals but yes I am not using data as my aunt doesn't have data plan so that also contributes to better battery and I live in a very rural area (there are more cows out here than humans...)

2g doesn't really drain too much battery, but it's still always a good idea to turn data off when you don't need it. The rest depends on the rom you are using but again there is no set number... From what I have read I am an odd ball with the battery life (and am not complaining). I assume you live in karachi? It's not even worth it to pay for 2g...I read somewhere that 3g will finally be rolling out to mobile networks in Pakistan in 2013...but we'll see...

1. Turn down screen brightness, screen kills the battery on the amaze more than anything else
2. Turn off automatic sync, this is very helpful
3. If you're on a JB ROM then turn off google now, this will stretch your battery life significantly.

45 minutes battery life

My Galaxy S II (and pretty much any Android evice I've picked up) has a usable battery life of 45 minutes. I unplug the phone at 9 A.M. in the morning after charging it to 100%. By 12 in the afternoon I would have browsed the Internet, checked social apps and played a few rounds of a game for what feels like 45 minutes in total. By then the battery is at 30% and I have to put it away in fear of it dying before I get home. The phone is useless for the rest of the day. My iPhone 4 with its 3 year old battery lasts 2 days like this.
No wakelocks, 99% deep sleep. I have a 3200mAh battery which feels like it lasts 1.5 hours before I have to put it away in fear. Basically the phone is not usable at all due to the user being in constant fear of the battery dying.
If I don't use the phone at all it's down to 20% by the end of the day with no wakelocks and 99% deep sleep. If I don't use my iPhone 4 with its 3 year old battery, it still lasts 20 days.

Well, or you buy a new battery for the S2 or you keep going with your "stylish" i phone. The world is not complicated and phones are not rocket science.
And by the way, games drain battery hard, very hard.
Charge at work, upgrade the battery or stick with your iPhone.
I tip my hat to you and wish you a good day.

I hope you checked with BBS, if so and as you said "99% of deep sleep", it means that the games are draining your battery.Well, sometimes even a "newish" battery can be faulty.Try with different battery,I mean a good one for sure. And if your results are the same, stop playing those freakin' games.

Yes I use BBS and have completely disabled all bloatware using Autostarts. I have the original battery and the Mugen Power 3200mAh battery. The battery life is proportional to with the capacity of the batteries I've used.
The primary use of my phone is mobile gaming. I don't care about the phone part except for receiving push notifications for email, IMs etc. which I then reply to on the PC anyway.
My SG2 and pretty much every Android device I pick up has 45 minutes of battery... Either you have won the lottery and got a defect phone several times or there is something fishy going on..
My sg3 lasted for 24 hours, my s4 last for a couple of days, my motorola razr lasted a week and my iphone 4 went for a day and sometimes 24 hours..
Even if I stress test my sg4 and s3 all the time it would last for a lot loooonger than 45 minutes..
I know the games will use a lot of juice but 45 minutes? Something is wrong...
What kind of games are we talking about? I do not play so much myself, just online poker, some tetris and so on, my iphone and android phones is pretty similar when talking about these games...
You could go for a Nintendo Game Boy etc
That said I taught ICS used less battery than JB. And it's pretty weird if you have the mugen battery. My Razer had a 3300 battery and that would go for days, even with heavy usage.

I've extensively used the Galaxy S, Galaxy S II, Galaxy Note, Nexus One, Nexus S. All of them can be used heavily (3G, gaming) for just 45-60 minutes before the battery is low and you have to save it for the rest of the day.
Simply listening to music for 2 hours in the gym drains 35% battery! WTF? This is without any equaliser and while using an external headphone amplifier. I could listen to music for 2-3 hours a day for 1 week on my old iPod touch before needing to charge it.

With zero usage and I mean barely switching on the screen once or twice to check the time, my 3200mAh Mugen battery is at 55% by evening. No wakelock, full deep sleep. The original battery will be below 20% or dead with zero usage.

Possibly a crap battery, but im going to suggest you don't use the samsung charger. The phone holds a wakelock whilst charging, keeping the phone running at 200Mhz, so unless you are delivering 650mA, your phone will die. Therefore I suggest you are using an unofficial charger, which doesn't deliver the needed 650mA, or you have an unofficial battery which wont accept 650mA. Either way, if you're not using Samsung appliances you shouldn't really be complaining about crap battery.

I am using the original Samsung charger and the original Samsung battery. I have an additional 3200mAh Mugen Power battery.
It drains faster than the charge rate only if I'm playing games.
Could be many things then, but as you say BBS doesnt report wakelocks, it would all just be conjecture. Try and pull a logcat after an hour or so of deepsleep and see if you notice anything untoward. Also, have you done simple things like turn WiFi off when you're not using it? That scans every 15 seconds or something. Or if you're in a crap phone signal area, your phone will keep scanning for and trying to connect to a better signal.

It's the phone obviously. Like I said if I put it in Aeroplane mode than the battery is still at 99% at the end of the day. If it's in normal mode it drains severely. I don't have this problem on any other phone. I've flashed the latest modem for my region and tried older modems for my region as well.
Not sure but it sounds like you have technical issues with your phone.
I have the official Samsung uprated battery and I loose about 60% out of the phone battery a day with heavy usage. Usually doesn't get to that point as I charge at work or home when not in use.
I take it as a given that all smart phones, tablets or laptops have ****e battery life.
Blanket generalisations about specific OS' or brands being superior to others is just silliness.
Saying that, when it comes to battery life, my HP Touchpad running CM 10.1 pisses all over any iOS device and the ghost of Steve Jobs agrees with me!

60% at the end of the day is a joke. It's unacceptable. Without use My iPhone 4 is at 95% at the end of the day with everything switched on and every possible syncing enabled. Why is it so hard for Samsung to produce a properly working phone after 5 years? I am 100% sure their latest phones like the Galaxy S 4 behave exactly the same way no matter what PR bull**** they try to spin.

Seems the iPhone is the device meant for you, for me in normal usage it lasts 2 and a half days altogether with the stock battery, heavy usage like a gameplay of Gamelofts Modern Combat series or N.O.V.A gives me 3 hours of continuous play after which the battery reaches around 7-10%, wifi in JB sadly kills my battery only gets around 6 hour's with continuous usage which was greater in my GB and ICS days.
But 95% at the end of the day for the iPhone 4 with everything ON is a bit of an exaggeration(the hell kind of unremovable battery is that?) don't you think?

Everything on with no use. Thats the drain in standby. My SGS2 drains whether I use it or not with everything on. In aeroplane mode, it stays at 99% without use.
