Should i give up the note? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

First of all i really do love the note but i am also on tmobile and the slow and inconsistent data speeds are really bringing me down and i think ive had enough. So I was thinking about giving up my note. Should i give it up for the us galaxy nexus? If not what phone? Basically before the note i had a dumb phone and i just want to know yalls opinion on which phone do you think would be the best? Also is cl a good place to sell the note?

I can comment on the CL question. I've sold several phones on craigslist. As long as you meet in well-lit, highly trafficked areas (I.E. Walmart) you should be just fine.
Just out of curiosity. Are you changing service as well? Your t-mobile speeds would be the same with another device right? (or am i missing something)

One X is OK if u can manage it (no SD, non removable battery), nexus is OK 2, but will be slower. Skyrocket if u don't mind wait about a month for official ics.
Craigslist is a good place to sell, always agree to meet in a public location during day, bring a friend, and accept cash only for such expensive items. Kijiji.com is also good if you have it in your area

I never understood why so many T-Mobile people bought AT&T phones at retail then used them on T-Mobile. Wouldn't saving the $500 on the phone pay for the price difference for plans and then some? also a better network to go with it.
as the other guy said wouldn't you still have slow data speeds with the nexus? does the T-Mobile modem not give u the faster network speeds?(not sure about this since I never looked into T-Mobile modems and stuff)

It seems to be true that ATT has more choices of high end phones and is the only one offering galaxy note. This might explain why ppl are buying att phones hoping to reflash with tmobile modems.
Tmobile gives fewer choices but lower cost and faster data speed. It also allows for tethering at no additional cost. Some phones sold by tmobile work on practically all gsm 3G networks. Tmobile unlocks their phones when you need it.
I don't think ATT does something similar.

GSM Galaxy Nexus is T-Mobile compatible out of the box.
If you're using the the Note on T-Mobile now, it's unlocked. Sell it on ebay for $600+, go buy yourself the Galaxy Nexus for $400 direct from Google.

Yeah this is why i bought the note because it looked amazing and found out it was able to work with tmobile. Its just the speeds are not up to usual tmobile speeds and they are inconsistent which idk why but i guess its because of the modem. I do have faster speeds with actual tmobile phones.

This is what i was thinking of doing, but im gona think and look at all my options.

I might just hold out and wait till the galaxy s3 comes out and see what it has to offer. If its as good as its hyped up to be might just see if it'll work on tmobile. Depends.

I'm tossing in the towel myself

no offense, but I have no idea why any one posts threads like this; if you don't like the phone, then get rid of it and move on...we don't need you to waste bandwidth and our time by telling us you are going to leave...

He didn't say he was leaving he was asking if.he should, its a valid question we all want to know if there's gonna be better radios for us using on tmobile and maybe someone has some insight,
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA

use your own brain in making decisions like that; no one knows what is going to happen with t-mobile or ATT in the future, unless they are psychic..

Its not a matter if that its if a Dev has found a solution, or if someone has found a tweak that works well, there's more retarded questions out there this one doesn't seem to be one if he didn't ask someone else would have,
And by wasting someones time is there fault u can easy click back and.look away

If your on the 256 meg plan with the note, you might consider upgrading your package, if reading this thread used that much bandwidth can you imagine what a 10 second YouTube clip uses?

You know you proliferate the visibility of threads like these by replying to them. You also would not waste your time if you skipped out to read this thread.
OP: I'd sell the phone and wait for the SG3 coming out next month.

[Q] Too late now to buy GS2 I777 or no ?

Hello
I am thinking seriously to buy the GS2 of AT&t to use it with my ST SIM card...Now please I want to know your opinions , should I go for this Galaxy S2 , or not ? should I wait some time for something new ? I know this device is of August or Sep 2011 technology , but stil the hardware is excellent ...
Another point is that I can get it for around 450$ locally from AT&T store (plus tax extra) .. is that a good price from a trustful seller ?
Thanks
Edit : I will not buy it through ATT contarct ... I will pay full retail price and get a ST SIM...
Personally I would at least wait till May 3rd for the SGSIII announcement even though we wont get it will end of the year but its nice so you know before you jump the gun.

Can you explain more please ? you mean LTE ? I don't think my city would get LTE at least for a year from now...
Examine your own needs thoroughly.
I don't have LTE, I don't have huge hands (No One X or anything above 4.5 for me!) and I wanted a phone that could last through a day and then some on moderate usage. The GSII in my opinion still trumps other newer phones. It's got great battery life, huge developer community, great screen, and the almighty Exynos to power your games

Yes, LTE is what I meant. If LTE is not a big deal for you, and you can't wait for the Galaxy III, then I say go for it.

I love my SGSII! But, if I were you I would also wait until the SGSIII announcement. I am a gadget freak so for me it's hard to stick to one phone for long, but I'd have to say that the SGSII is one of the best devices one could own.
I bought a refurbished/like-new gsII for $250 just 2 weeks ago to use with ST. Im am very satisfied with it thus far(was previously using a Samsung infuse 4g). SGH-i777 runs noticeably faster though i prefer the larger 4.5in screen on the infuse. And yes 4g is available and works very well through att + straight talk for me.
If your looking for a bargain, i would look for a used gs II (~$250 is a great deal for buying a smart phone like this off contract). But if you have 400-500 spend, you might as well wait for the newer phones which have larger screens with better resolutions and better specs overall.

That estimate seems really low. The S2 (both international and AT&T) is still selling for like $550 new. You think the S3 is going to sell for less than $500? It'll probably be more like $750...

That's a smart point indeed ...
AT&T stores and website are selling the GS2 I777 for $449.99 now
Maybe a little less in 1 or 2 months , ~$350-$400
And for sure GS3 price would be skyhigh in the near future , ~$750 or more when released , at least 3-4 months from now ... Clearly out of my budget..
The SGSII is a great phone and it still has a few more good years left in it and like mentioned in earlier postings still competes if not blows away newer devices. if LTE is not a big deal for you and getting the latest and greatest right away is not your thing, then by all means grab this phone. It has great community support and with it being somewhat of an older model it could be had at a bargain with some research. i got mine for $51 including taxes with a 2 year agreement which i didnt mind cause I just got added to a family plan at Fry's electronics. Anyway grab one or not you wont be disappointed.

well, full retail price will definitely be up there but you can usually find people reselling newer model phones between 400-600 in new/like-new condition off of craigslist/ebay/amazon. Also i pretty much consider everything above $500 to be in the same price range. If your really gonna drop $500 on a phone, might as well add the extra 100 or 200 to get best of the best.
If you look hard enough i know you can find great deals out there, or you could always pay full retail too i guess.

You should always be extremely wary of buying a phone from craigslist/ebay/ecrater...I've seen a few sellers purporting to sell the Galaxy Note for $250-$450 new, and they've all had no ratings and unsigned web pages. Suspicious to say the least.

switching to sprint from verizon!

i am wondering if i should get this phone and how development is going in these forums as i have a rezound and my contract is due in september should i get this phone in august as that is when i can cancel my contract or should i wait to see what else is released im switching to sprint as verizon decided to end unlimited data and i am not willing to pay retail price on a phone as i have already paid retail for the rezound so what are all of your experiences with this phone should i go for it or nah i dont like the nexus or gs3 help please!
Personally I love my EVO LTE. Honestly since you seem to be from Huston I would definitely drop Verizon and pick up this phone with Sprit.
A.) The rates are cheaper and you get TRUE unlimited data.
B.) Huston is one of the first markets that will be getting LTE on the 15th of this month so it should be running great by August.
C.) This phone is just so sexy it had to get its own letter just for that.
I had my OG EVO for 2 years and loved it. Now that I have the LTEVO I will never look back, I love this phone.

It's not that, but that paragraph has tried to disguise itself as a sentence.
You being in the first LTE roll out market, I say HELL YEAH. I would run and not walk to Sprint today and lock in unlimited data. Verizon's prices are out of control.
As a fellow Houstonian, get Sprint's EVO LTE. In about a little over a week LTE will be officially switched on. The women (or me, if you're into that sort of thing) who will fall for you will be in the thousands.
Yea I'd say switch as well. One of the early ones with LTE. I'm in Roanoke Virginia. I never came close to seeing wimax and highly highly doubt I'll see lte during this phones life.
Verizon is money hungry and petty. I'd say switch in a heartbeat and try sprints lte

Honestly, I probably would be with Verizon right now, if it weren't for the fact that Sprint just has a wider selection of more appealing phones. Another thing that sucks about Verizon is price! Sprint seems to actually be making an effort now to listen to customers and make them happy, so if you can wait for LTE and Network Vision upgrades, I think Sprint will be a better value long term.

i mean i only pay 70 bucks a month for unlimited everything because i am a vip member of verizon but no unlimited data is going to kill me i mean i have house internet but im rarely home and i use my laptop more with the hotspot off my rezound so easily i get at least 20-30gbs a month and these data plans they have released are too crazy so i think i am going with sprint on this one and yes i do remember the good old days with the evo 4g got it when it barely came out but switched after my contract was up because verizon got 4g lte but yes i am switching back to sprint and i am getting this phone the specs on this beast are awesome and then its coming out in white! oh yeah!

let me help you out here my friend......... think about this....
is unlimited data even a validated feature when the fastest download speed you will achieve will be 2 mb down? here is my argument. at this point, this means you will ALWAYS be on wifi when at home, assuming you have wifi....
so the question is, how FAST will your carrier connection be, and how much of a *#&$ing nightmare is it going to be for YOU to have UNGODLY SLOW mobile data...?
if this does not apply to you, (meaning you never access internet when on the go - unlikely) then disregard this analysis.
here is the thing...
on verizon's network, your mobile connection will be conveniently fast, this will be something you notice, trust me.
so here is what i would do. if it were me in your shoes... stay with the faster network. these are not "phones" they are computers. and how irritating as **** is it when your laptop loads web pages in 30 seconds. or even 10........... try to fathom what this transition will be to you and how it will effect you personally.
1. use wifi when at home (not sure why anybody wouldn't anyways, it is always faster) this will save your "usage" of your limited data plan.
2. use that 2 gb or whatever data plan you have, simply to conveniently access things while on the move.
3. thank me for this post. i probably saved you from hanging yourself.

Droid DNA on AT&T HSPA+

I know it won't work on the LTE network, but will it at least work fully on the HSPA+ network like a Nexus 4 would? I'm planning on getting one or the other and using it on Straight Talk (via AT&T)
The Droid DNA will work on AT&T gsm and 3g. It does not have the same theoretical download speeds of the nexus 4 however. The nexus 4 supports up to 42Mbps, AT&T provides only up to 21Mbps and the Droid DNA only supports up to 14.4Mbps. But on an AT&T network, the speed difference shouldn't be an issue.

You guys would probably have great luck if you checked ebay or something after the official release. I know its gonna be an epic phone.....but all bias aside, a lot of people are hating on it and will dislike it for some stupid little reason. And because its not quite as main stream as I personally believe it should be, you should be able to pick one up for somewhere around 350~400 in brand new condition I would think. Thats only because you konw as well as I do that its just a phone that everyone and their mom isn't gonna be out to get.
That's just my honest opinion......I personally would be willing to pay 800 for it if I had to, I love the phone!!

350-400, may be 8 months from now.
AT&T users are better off waiting for the international version to be released. It'll support HSPA+ 21MB and possibly even 42MB. It will also most likely be modeled after the J-Butterfly so it will have removable storage. It also won't have VZW's insane bloatware and you'll get updates directly from HTC. Importing one though will probably be more than the $600 VZW is charging off contract.

So (price aside) you'd rather buy a device that won't perform as well and has fewer features rather than waiting a couple of weeks? Evleaks are the ones who posted the Droid DNA press shot leaks and the device was announced three weeks later. They're also the ones that posted the Deluxe press shot. So if history repeats itself you'll know more by the end of the year. For something that you'll own for probably a year waiting a couple of weeks doesn't seem like a bad idea. How will you feel using a hobbled DNA (VZW borked the settings toggle for the soft button so it behaves like the OG One X did initially) on AT&T if a better version of the same phone's available a month or two after you buy it? 21+MB HSPA and expandable storage aren't trivial features. HTC's in bad financial shape and needs to grow revenue. They aren't going to be coy about getting new high-end devices to market as soon as they are ready. And with the J-Butterfly and DNA shipping the hard stuff's already been completed. Also if you're interested in development the international Deluxe will have far more XDA support than the DNA. Look at the current AT&T XL dev section compared to the OG One X.

Perhaps not, but the price of importing it will be expensive and few will actually do that. AT&T is never going to get this phone. Period. Verizon only Droid brands phones it has US exclusivity on and AT&T has the One X+, there's no reason for them to carry it right now. And if someone really wanted this phone with costs considered the One X+ is where they would end up.

Pure conjecture. There's a variety of levels and reasons why some devices have more dev support and others.

Who said they were? But for people that can afford a $600 non-subsidized device paying an extra $100 (WAG) to get one that works better on their network doesn't seem irrational. There are quite a few people in the OG One X forum from the U.S. they paid more than $600 to import their phones; myself included. Even more from the U.S. have done the same thing with SGS3 and Note II. Part of paying the extra $'s over just getting a subsidized phone is receiving updates directly from HTC, using all their features (Watch, Hub, Locations, etc.) as they intended, no carrier molestation of the h/w or s/w, and tethering. Using a phone dependent on one carrier for updates on another carrier's network kind of defeats the purpose; especially at $600.
Pure conjecture.

First, there's no doubt after what VZW pulled with their version of the SGS3 that the DNA is going to be locked down like a fortress. HTC only unlocks carrier devices through HTCdev with the permission of the carrier. Which way do you think VZW will lean? That, and the fact it's only offered on one network (albeit one of the world's largest) don't seem like a recipe for a big dev community. Especially if a more open better featured international version is announced this year (which I agree is pure conjecture).
I'm not trying to tell you or anyone else what to do. I'm interested in the Deluxe and just sharing my thoughts on it vs. the DNA.

Verizon: Grandfathered Unlimited Data is the only data plan worth having

This is not specific to the Verizon Galaxy S4, but it is indeed the only reason I will preorder the Verizon version tomorrow (as opposed to switching to another carrier).
The below says everything. Feel free to share your comments and add to sharing your stories on this great service as well.

I imagine that's the only scenario in which I would go with Verizon's GS4. Right now their most attractive offer is $70/month for 3G speed, 2GB of data, and unlimited talk/text. Pretty much worthless in my eyes.
Too bad we have to wait 30+ damn days longer than everyone else because they're morons.

Agreed, especially when T-Mobile offers unlimited everything for the same cost (technically cheaper because I know T-Mobile has smaller fees and taxes).

They're not morons. They know exactly what they're doing with those dates.
On a serious note though: Nevertheless, somehow still worth the wait just to have the number 1 wireless network in the country. Come on, is our impatience really worth getting mad at them?
I agree. Paying the extra $450 to get it off contract will MORE than pay itself back bay keeping the unlimited plan. I use my Vulkano Box to placeshift to my phone or tether to my tablet and watch on that. I'm using close to 8 GB a month. Nothing close to you, but enough to pay off contract and keep my plan is well worth it.
I have grandfathered unlimited for $63/month. But youre saying that Verizon gets the S4 a month later than everyone else? Don't know if I can wait that long.

You're really willing to give up a carrier (especially arguably the best carrier service available at this time that you won't be able to get back ever again after losing it) all because you can't wait one more month for a phone?
If you're going to go down that route you should consider not wasting away that service of yours and selling your line to someone else to take over. Grandfathered Unlimited Data plans on Verizon are as good as gold right now.
These eBay results speak for themselves: Link Here
And these are all the completed sale to give you an idea how much you can make on it: Link Here
I have two unlimited data lines that I took over for free last year right before they took away the upgrades. I bought an iPhone 4s and managed to preorder the galaxy s3 because both lines were eligible for upgrdes at the time. I consider myself lucky. I tether and share with my ATT friends at work I burn like 30gb a month verizon has never bothered me. I'm thinking Bout going to t mobile though to cut down on my bill and get gsm nexus phones

Wow, I didn't even know it was possible to purchase Grandfather plans from other people. Kind of tempting actually, but I'd hold off until I had more scratch. As it is, I'm buying the GS4 for full retail+accessories+new monthly data plan. Good to know it's an open option though.
Wow, Assuming that is mostly streaming video? I don't think I watch that much video on my HTPC a month at 8 to 12 GB per movie, lol. Must be nice having that kind of free time on your hands.
I tether to my gaming laptop to play online games I think it burns a lot of data. Also I use xbmc to stream movies and do some Torrenting. I might skip out on gs4 and wait to see a phone with that snapdragon 800 chip I'm very interested in the quickcharge 2.0 it has that they decided to leave out on the 600 sadly

Specific rule Verizon enforced. 3G to 4G basically means new contract to them even if you buy the phone full price they have to "upgrade" your plan as well to allow you to connect to LTE: Details Here

So the link above is good info, but is there any more detail missing? I've got unlimited LTE on my Galaxy Nexus and plan on pre-ordering the S4 tomorrow at full retail 649.99. Is there anything to be cautious of when placing the order?
I shouldn't have to change plans or anything, but is there anyway I could screw this up?

Does that mean I lose my unlimited either way since I only have 3g right now, even if I buy without a new contract?
My sister in law went from the droid x to the Verizon galaxy nexus last month and did NOT lose unlimited. She just went and picked up a Sims card and popped the ***** in. Took maybe 2 minutes for the phone to be fully functional. Her plan wasn't changed at all. If you take upgrade price you will lose it

Pretty much it's simple. To avoid losing your unlimited data you have to meet the below requirements:
Be already on an LTE device with an unlimited data plan
Purchase your new device all full retail or on the new device payment plan (dividing full price into 12 monthly payments)
Avoid using an "upgrade" on the line you have unlimited data on at all costs!!
Try to avoid making any little other unrelated changes in your service (you never want to give them a excuse to force you over to tiered)
If you have other lines that can upgrade (like family plans) you can use their upgrade to get the device at the cheaper price and then just swap your microSIM card into it

Unfortunately it appears to be the case. But who knows, maybe if you yell loudly enough and threaten to leave Verizon unless they can confirm they will keep your unlimited data, maybe someone will be able to do some "behind-the-scenes magic" and transition over for you. But in all reality, without a serious fight for it I wouldn't count on keeping it if you upgrade even at full price.
Well if I spend $650 on the phone, I damn well will scream at them if they tell me I still lose unlimited. I'm going to have to try to find out before I do anything I guess, not like I have anything else to do for 36 damn days.

See I guess there it is. I am never really in a situation anymore where I would tether my laptop. Our laptop is four years old and basically sits at the end of our kitchen table. We are pretty much 100% tablets for mobile computing now. I don't have time for in depth games much anymore. Work/gym/kids eats all my time. And if I am going to sit and "do computer", I am going to do it in the study in a proper chair with a proper keyboard, a big monitor, a mouse, and fast tower pc. Laptops have been squeezed out of my personal life by the superior overall experience of a real desktop set up and the superior portability of a tablet. Don't get me wrong...my work computer is a laptop, but I don't see much need for one for personal stuff the way my life is set up now.
I guess if I were a single twenty-something it would be different, but really, I don't have much of a need for big data mobile computing.

Making the switch, my journey.

So, this is just a write up of my switch from Verizon to Straight Talk and (Probably) everything in between.
So basically, this starts out with me being on Verizon for 9 years, ever since I owned my first flip phone. Although, every year it became harder and harder to stay on Verizon, especially with Nexus's devices coming out and basically all the "Cool" phones on the other carriers and Verizon being more and more money hungry and caring less and less about the customer. Sadly, Verizon just had the best coverage and moderate prices (Grandfathered onto Unlimited data). No one could match what I had.
I stuck it out with Verizon, although I hated everything about the company, there was no easy or cheap alternative that could match Verizon's data coverage (Or so I thought), but finally I got my break. Well not that easily, I spent all of the weekend thinking about different options to take with my plan since it will be ending in December (I'm also bundled my parents plan and need to get off of it so it's either try my luck with Verizon or find an alternative and finally get away from this hell hole of a company). I even took a drive to T-Mobile to test out a Nexus 4, and ended at Best Buy seeing what they would give me for my phone ($250 for anyone who is wandering, which isn't bad since the best I could find on Swappa/Craigslist was around $300) to see if I could buy one straight up. Although this sounded like a great idea, I could never go to T-Mobile with their spotty coverage, and AT&T is just as bad as Verizon with the same prices, I had no other options in terms of a GSM carrier.
Although the Nexus 4 is one hell of a device, I just couldn't force myself to get it with the Nexus 5 coming out so soon. So I did some looking and finally found out that it's actually pretty simple to get a Verizon phone onto another network (Since the Verizon Note 2 has LTE/CDMA/GSM bands). So I pulled the trigger and bought a Straight Talk SIM card and an unlimited everything plan for $55. This was a small price to pay to test if there was a cheap and unlimited alternative to Verizon that was able to somewhat rival their coverage. Again, this was more of a test than anything for me to see if I am going to stick it out with Verizon or move to a prepaid carrier.
I ended up going with the AT&T SIM as T-Mobile get's almost no reception in my area (As proven by my friends who have them and never have service) and got my SIM card in the mail yesterday. I was on CM10.2 for the Verizon Note 2 and was ready to just stick this card in and go, of course it wouldn't be as simple as just putting the card in and going right? Well yea, it did take a little messing around. First thing first, I put the card in, activated it per usual, and was actually able to get data, calling and I could receive texts. I couldn't on the other hand, send texts and didn't have signal bars in the status bar. So I played around with APN's for a while and couldn't get it to work. So I tried moving to a Touchwiz ROM. Of course the first I tried was just a stock rooted and low and behold Verizon blocks you from using SIM cards that aren't from Verizon (Did I mention how much I hate Verizon?).
I then went on to try Beans ROM and low and behold, no setup required, turned it on and it was good to go. Everything working, I had a smile from ear to ear just having this actually work. I never knew from the beginning if Straight Talk or even another SIM would work in my phone so everything was a crap shoot until it would finally work, but was lucky enough to have it work! Although, I could have stopped there, I just can't stand Touchwiz so I decided today I would give CM another shot. Still didn't work even when messing with APN's so I thought what the hell, let's try something crazy. Backed up my current ROM and tried flashing the toLTE CM10.2 ROM and of course it failed since my phone isn't the N7105. So I dug a little deeper, and copied the updater-script from the Verizon version to the toLTE version and it installed! So, I reboot it and think, man, I'm going to get stuck in a boot loop, but maybe I was just lucky today as I made it straight to my home screen, even better, I had full data, signal bars working, and was able to send texts. I thought this was amazing. I literally had my cake and was able to eat it too, until I tried GPS. Which of course didn't work. Another hour of trying crap and finally tried just copying the GPS.conf from the Verizon CM ROM over and low and behold, I had GPS! So I now have a perfectly working phone, on CM10.2 using a Straight Talk SIM/contract, using AT&T's network, all for $45 a month.
I'm sure a lot of you will read this and want your 5/10/15 minutes back, but this is just for the few that want to break away but don't have the hundreds of dollars to switch to different carriers, different phones, different plans just to find one that works. I was in this boat, and know how it feels. I have been using this phone for roughly a day and am going to make sure I have service everywhere I need it before making my final decision (So far work and home have full H+), but if all goes well will be finally ditching Verizon at the end of the year and getting myself a Nexus that I won't have to worry about having slow updates because my carrier is lazy. At this point, I couldn't be happier and hopefully get some of you guys to at least give it a shot like I did.
Please post a reply or DM me if you have any questions on my process, I will be more than happy to help out as much as I can!
So for anyone who doesn't believe me or those of you "Pics or it didn't happen!". This is from my phone, using the Straight Talk SIM. Data speeds are no where near Verizon's nor is the ping but I am on WiFi 90% of the time anyways so just having a data correction is my main priority.

Love it, I've been thinking about escape for some time so I appreciate the write up. The Note 2 is the best phone I've ever used, but I've debated whether to sign my life away with Verizon again for the 3.
I tried the T-Mobile route and the coverage was so abysmal I scurried back. This gives me hope for another option. What sort of data speeds do you get when needed?
Thank you for taking the time to write that up. I was thinking about doing the same thing last year but was worried about the decrease in data. I've read in numerous threads that data just plain sucks with Straight Talk.
Could you give us an update periodically on this? Thnx!!!

Good lord you guys are data hogs!
How's the voice coverage? my 4 person family plan with only 6GB between the 4 of us is $237 a month. 4 * $45 would be a big improvement and of course, I could stop yelling at the kids for watching youtube all the time.

As I said, for me I was able to get data/voice everywhere that I went, but remember I was using AT&T's towers so it may change depending on the carrier you go with. My month is coming to an end and I have about 2 more months before I have to finally decide, but it is looking like a go as of right now.

Mike,
Thnx for the continued updates. Come back when it's go time and let us know if you permanently made the shift.
I've been considering doing exactly this, its great to know that our handsets will work with these SIMs. Did you port your number over or chose a new one? I'm curious as to how hard it would be to do so.

Porting my number to T-Mobile was incredibly easy. I'm sure it's just as easy as Straight Talk. During the setup you're asked whether you want to get a new number or port your current number. That's it. Took only a few hours for everything to fully switch over to my Nexus 4 and I was on my way. I have one bill left for Verizon with my ETF and then I'll be completely free from them.
fascinating
This is really great to see. I was thinking about doing the same thing but I am worried about coverage issues.
I was in a similar situation, I have had Verizon for years on my family unlimited plan and I needed to get off of my parents' plan, so I gave Sprint a shot because I have a friend that has it. What he didn't tell me was that he has always had abysmal service everywhere, a point I discovered when I lost service repeatedly just walking across the house. Calls would drop out and I'd be lucky to even be able to send a text message in most places at work.
I abandoned ship pretty quickly and went crying back to Verizon. Unfortunately there was no way to recover unlimited data, but I checked and I only used an average of ~1.5GB a month anyway. Went in on the 4GB plan with my brother.
Verizon really doesn't care about their customers, and that goes all the way from corporate to the stores. Their customer service is pitiful. I missed one payment and they put my account on cash only for SIX MONTHS. That means I literally have to go into the store and feed a machine cash for 6 months or I can't pay my bill. Not online, not over the mobile app, not even over the phone. If you call and ask them about it they treat you like you're some second class citizen that isn't worth their time, or they just spout off how they have no control over anything.
I've also noticed over the years that the employees in the store have less and less power over anything. They can do almost nothing for your account aside from activate your new phone. You have to call customer service to do anything. If they didn't have the best coverage around by leaps and bounds, I'd never use them again.
