The soft key backight is controlled by the ambient light sensor. If it is dark, the lights glow, if not, no glow. The buttons are very easy to see even in low light if the glow is off. But if you need them to light up on demand, hold your hand over the top of the phone and they will glow for you.
I know how they work. I want to know if your home key responds by lighting up the soft keys for a second while locked.... And if your using ics or gb.

That is the behaviour of the sweep2wake script on Chad's Incredikernel beta7 for GB. Unsure if there are any scripts or settings on other kernels or ROMs that do that.
They only glow with the ambient light sensor. Touching them does nothing. Unless you have that special ROM and kernel.

The "internet button and mail button" have a white backlight. And of course the green and red button have a backlight as well. Anyone figure out if these can be disabled,I would imagine battery life may increase.

So far no. No2Chem is working on something right now in conjunction with his back light screen dimmer (that I never go to work). As far I know there is no other app that will control them. If there is that would be nice to save a little bit of juice.
The lights aren't really necessary so that would be nice. I'm sure most people know where those keys are in the dark. Fairly simple one on each corner.
I have been watcing many previews and have seen many pictures of the Galaxy S II. In all of them, it looks like the Menu and the Back button are only visible when in use, where on the Vibrant you could see the buttons all the time and would light up when pressed. Is it the same as the Vibrant or are the Menu and Back buttons not visible, because I like how the GS II looks with just the big button showing. Thanks
The buttons are not visible unless lit up.
You can adjust or completely disable the lighting via settings / display and adjust touch key light duration.

Hi guys
Had my galaxy s 2 through T-Mobile for a few days now. Beats HD2 running TyphooN CyanogenMod 7 hands down.
I've debranded the phone, running KE7 XEU and rooted via chainfire's insecure kernel.
However I've noticed this morning that the capacitive buttons are no longer lit up. The power is very low and needs charging, so I was wondering is this normal? A sort of built in power saving thing perhaps?
I'm not actually running power save mode, but suddenly the buttons aren't lit, however they still work?
Any ideas.
Thanks
Yes, that's normal. Search the settings, you can customize the behaviour.

Thanks for the swift reply.
That's a relief!
I've just put on the Case Mate Tough case and suddenly the buttons didn't light up - thought maybe I'd somehow broken it!
I can see power save settings and an option under display to specify the touch key light duration, but not nothing specifically regarding turning off touch key light power saving mode when battery low. Am I missing something?
Unfortunately there isn't anything you can do. When the power is low the buttons won't light up. For me it's not the end of the world as I know where they are.

I was just wondering if there was a mod that would only enable the capacitive buttons to be pressed only when they're lit. For example, say I want to press the back button, i'd have to click on the capacitive button which would make the buttons light up and then i'd have to press it again (within 1.5 seconds or however many seconds you've chosen in the settings) for it to perform the action.
I believe this would be a very useful feature because the buttons on the s3 are very low and are easily pressed playing games in landscape mode.

Any way to dim the capacitive led buttons on the Lumia 920?
It is very distracting when matching Netflix in bed.
+1 to this

Just found out after the Portico update that when you wake up the phone and If the light sensor does not pick up any light, then the LED buttons will not light up.
