[Q] Thunderbolt S-Off with 2.3.4 Update - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, I've looked around but I can't find the answer. I'm a Noob to this particular Software update. I just flashed the latest software update 2.11.605.19 710RD to my Thunderbolt. It was rooted, however since this is an OTA, it is no longer rooted. I used the HTCdev bootloader utility to unlock the bootloader, but I can't get S-Off. I've tried the Revolutionary utility and that didn't work on my device. Any thoughts?

The latest ota is not rootable at the moment. You'll need to revert back to a previous update.

There's a temp root that you can try. It works on .9 and .19. I got the instructions from YouTube. Search thunderbolt temp root.

The temp root worked perfectly. Rooted with Revolutionary and flashed SuperUser .zip file. Everything is as it should be. Thanks.

I cannot get the temp root file to download and become usable due to it having a virus. My virus protection has been catching all these files with sort of infected software. How is it that all the mirror for any RUU, radio, .zip have all been infected? I need some understanding to what is going on with all of this. It will just take me to Finaltorrent and download a virus onto my computer, and not actually download a single rom file. I'm really lost as to what is going on.

[Q] 2.07.605.x Backout

I installed 2.07.605 leaked version on my rooted Froyo using hboot, bad mistake on my part, because I did not flash it and the recovery option in hboot does not work for me. I did not read about locking the bootloader method by Shadowmite until afterwards. Does anyone have a method to change the bootloader to an earlier version so that I can obtain root access or revert to Froyo?
I have tried to put fixed bootloader files and the original stock Froyo in PG05IMG files on my SD card to force an update, but that does not work either.

Go to http://revolutionary.io and use their tool. I don't think the old manual root method will work on that build as it is. !!!BUT!!! Be warned: getting back to stock unrooted s-on after using Revolutionary (like for a warranty replacement) is not a simple task at this point in time.

[Q] Phone updated with new OTA (2.11.605.9) - no more root??

My phone was rooted w/ s-off, I had to take it to the Verizon store today for a warranty replacement so I unrooted and got it back to s-on before I went. They gave me a new phone and when I got home I noticed they had applied the OTA already before I left the store, must have been when they were activating the phone and new SIM.
So I have 2.11.605.9 and I try to run Revolutionary to get s-off and root and it stops saying it could not get root.
Am I stuck waiting for the Revolutionary tool to be updated or is there something else I can do?

So when you say you can't get "root" do you mean it won't flash their custom bootloader?
Have you tried using the manual method?
Has anyone else tried this to confirm if the exploit has been patched?
I guess I could be a guinea pig and try it out for myself. Of course, if I can't root that will really put a damper on my ROM update

Ok, took the plunge and tried the htcdev.com method but the Thunderbolt is not supported. It returns a "token" that is necessary to complete the unlock process that says "invalid token - device not supported". I guess I have to wait for the folks at Revolutionary to get root back.
If you don't mind having to wipe your phone... You can rooted and on 2.11.605.9... see -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20434629&postcount=36
So if I unroot and my phone takes the latest 2.11.605..9 update, all I have to do is flash the 2.11.605.5 RUU, put phone into airplane mode as soon as it boots, then I can root again?

You are correct. The problem I, and a few others, were having was we were unrooted and s-on. The OTA was applied to an already locked bootloader and thus couldn't run Revolutionary to get our phones rooted or s-off. No way I was going to chance taking my phone to the Verizon store with s-off for a warranty issue.

Hey everyone,
Noob here. I've checked out a bunch of stuff on the forums and it seems like the only solution to the OTA 2.11.605.9 blocking of revolutionary is to downgrade to .5
However, I've had my tb for a while and don't want to wipe my contacts and data. Is there a workaround for this? If not, would it be reasonable to expect some kind of fix for the revolutionary method in the near future?
Thanks

Months ago I used HTCDev to unlock and flashed TWRP recovery and su-2.3.6.3.zip from this tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1239821
I was underwhelmed with the MIUI ROM and got curious about Sprint's ICS update, so I relocked the bootloader and ran the 2.17 RUU.exe, then updated to 2.89 OTA. After that I could use my original HTCDev Unlock_code.bin to unlock the bootloader, but su-2.3.6.3 would not give me proper root access (verified with Root Checker app). Thankfully downloading Superuser-3.1.3-arm-signed.zip from http://androidsu.com/superuser/ and flashing it through recovery worked.
I now have root with the stock Sprint ICS. Why? Because I wanted to keep the 3D and Wimax functionality (i know, i know) while still being able to run TiBackup to freeze the goddamned pre-installed apps that everyone hates. I'm sure this is stated elsewhere in the forums, but I read your post before I resolved my issue so I thought I'd come back and reply just in case you or anyone else were still grappling with it.

Thanks a lot, that really helped me to root a brand new stok rom on the Sprint evo 3d!
Just for future reference when you download a super user zip, notice the letters next to superuser efghi those letters represent the past android os's (e)clair, (f)royo, (g)ingerbread, (h)oneycomb, and (I)cecream sandwhich. Always look for that if you plan to root a stock Rom.

[Q] Stumped! How in the heck do I get S-off and wifi working?

I have bootloader ver 1.05.0000 and my S is on. I am trying to get it turned off. Both revolutionary and thunderbolt tool fail at the rooting portion. I already hack clockworkmod flashed and am running a thunderstick full blown (for now). I want to update my radios and attempt to fix my wifi. So how do I go about getting the s-off on this thing. I have adb and can log into the phone push/pull files and send it commands. What am I missing?
Ever since i flashed clockwork and got a working rom installed my wifi has been KIA.
Thanks,
Barry
I tired this method: http://www.thunderboltforums.com/fo...690-downgrade-get-s-off-now-unneccessary.html
No dice. Still says S-on revolutionary still didnt work thunderbolttool worked then opened revolutionary, but revoutionary still failed.
What now?

You don't need to downgrade, but you do need to be on a stock rom (.19 or lower) for the root to work. Here's a stock .19 ruu that should work for you: http://goo.im/devs/trter10/PG05IMG.zip
edit: just noticed the last post. Just going to warn you, you will not be able to flash an ICS or AOSP ROM with just htcdev unlock

[q] ics root

Ok so I've been tampering a little with my hotspot.....turns out it doesn't work. The phone's not rooted so I was trying to use it legitimately. Well now, since there's hotspot tethering with rooted access, I was wondering what preparations were needed to gain root access.
Phone's hardware:
hboot: 2.28
Android Version: 4.0.3
Software #: 4.05.605.14710RD
I previously updated it a looong time ago when ICS came out in 2012. so I don't know much about how the rooting process has changed for the resound, or if there is any root access with ICS.
Anything at this point helps, I wasted 30 dollars just to find out it doesn't work so... Even if a factory reset would do the trick, I would still like to know about how to root it on ICS.
