I was wonder how big of a splash screen image can this phone take before it bricks? I remember back when I had the moment that we couldn't flash an image that was too big, meaning the size of the file not resolution, or it would perm-brick the phone. Now that we have S-off, I want to make sure we don't brick phone just cause we can flash the splash screen. Maybe phones have gotten better since then but I don't want to take a chance like this yet without proper consultation.

My xv6800's screen is black with a vertical green line down the middle. its been like this 4 3 days, nothing i tried worked. [so dont suggest: "'soft reset your phone" or "take the battery out and turn it back on"]
i unlocked it, upgraded to DCD's new ROM, and upgraded the radio about 2 weeks ago.
I presume that the upgrades did not cause this problem.
I believe that this was caused by a lacross ball hittin me in the leg (lol) with my phone in my pocket, and hitting the edge of the phones screen too....
This seems to happen with other high def products (as per google), when the cables come loose.... but idk, im not a technician.
The touch screen still works somehow, but it displays the same screen all the time, and doesnt rotate when i open it. I can still recieve and make calls, and my alarm works too.
SO
#1) Does anyone know how to, or how easily this can be fixed?
#2) AND How hard would it be to downflash without a screen? so i can take it to verizon. also where can i find REALLY detailed INSTRUCTIONS (as i already have the stock files, with crappy instructions) to do this?
thanks

#1) My guess is not easily at all. And attempting to fix it would probably void whatever warranty/insurance you might have.
#2) If you can connect the phone via activesync, you should be able to run the RUU to flash the stock ROM image. The computer will walk you through all the steps. When it's finished, the phone will reset itself and sit at the screen where it waits for you to align the screen. At that point, you're done with the phone. Take it to Verizon.
I broke the screen on my PPC-6700 while moving a few months back (and got upgraded to the 6800). At the time I had a non-stock ROM image loaded. Since the screen was completely unreadable, I didn't even bother trying to re-flash to a stock image. I just took the broken phone to Sprint, showed it to them, and picked up a refurb 6800 a couple days later thanks to the insurance plan. I don't think you need to worry too much if they can't see what's on the phone.
Might want to a program like mymobiler.com to see if you can control the device that way... Make the basic changes you need then try to take it back to the store.

That's a damn good idea, if you can get MyMobiler installed on the device (which shouldn't be difficult). I'll have to remember that!
Lately I've been in the mood to taste test some of the fantastic ROMs made by the community, but I have a concern about flashing too many times.
Can I corrupt the hardware with bad blocks by flashing too much? What is an alternative?
No. Flashing a new rom erases all existing data of a previous rom.
Some devices allow you to boot from SD card.
Yes, too much flashing will destroy the chips, but too much usually means millions of cycles (I don't remember the real number, but it should be easy to find... the important part is that it's a lot)... so you don't have a lot to worry about here.
The bigger risk is that something goes wrong and you manage to wreck the software on those chips beyond repair (to the point where you can't even get into any kind of recovery anymore)... the chance isn't very big, but it rises exponentially each time you flash... the risk for each individual attempt is the same, but the chance that one of your attempt fails rises.
Okay I am looking at getting an HD2 used from a gentleman who says he's been having problems with it sticking on the "T-Mobile screen," which I'm assuming is the infamous "Stick Together" screen. From my knowledge he hasn't unlocked or rooted the phone or anything. Would flashing Android on it resolve the issue? I've dug through all the Q&A threads and used the search engine too but I didn't find any threads that were very helpful. Please help?
depends what he did, if he was playing around and task 29'd for instance, that would cause such symptoms, and can be resolved easily, but there are a ton of other, far less fixable causes too.
best thing, get the 3,14 t mobile rom from t-mobile.com, and flash it from sd card, (4gb or smaller, look up sd card flashing) if the flash takes and the phone boots, lovely, if it doesnt, stay away.
Okay I'll keep that in mind, he said something along the lines of it been stuck there. Like it doesn't progress at all. So if that's the case (I'm not a noob with roms and the like only with the HD2) would it still be flashable because I will have to set it up to be flashable period.
heh, theres the rub, you wont know till you try, it could be a corrupted flash that a new flash solves, it could be task29 left an empty OS, it could be a corrupted radio (more severe, not always fixable) it could be a hardware fault (overheating can cause same symptoms) stuck/unchangeable spl/radio will do this too, where flashing appears to happen but the phone sticks there, amd teh radio/spl didnt change, again, not always (very rarely, in fact,) fixable, its not an easy one to diagnose without seeing the results of a few flashes.
If you can, flash its stock rom from sd card(4gb or smaller, bigger cards wont work), that will be the big test, until that happens its all guesswork. You deff shouldnt hand over a fat wad of bills until such time.
I have a Droid Razr that had a small accident that left the lcd screen shattered, but the Gorrilla glass intact. I now use this phone with my Lapdock and it works perfectly. My problem is that I have been trying to find a way to upgrade the phone to JB with the leaked version that got released on Christmas Eve.
The screen doesn't not work at all. The soft buttons work fine and so do the external buttons. Both ports work as well. The screen does not light up nor does it accept any input. The lapdock will start up as soon as the phone gets completely booted.
My question is there a way to upgrade the phone from ICS to JB without using the recovery menu. I can't navigate the recovery menu, so I can't install the zip file. If I had the two original files that came from the cache system folder, I could just reboot the phone and it would upgrade, right? If that is the case, does anyone have those original files that I could download?
I would love to upgrade this phone now instead of waiting for the OTA. Newer is always better.
By the way the phone got slammed in the house door and the frame is bent, so there is no fixing the phone at this point. The only use is to use it as a permanent dock on my lapdock 500.
Thanks to anyone that helps me or for even reading this post!
Do you suspect that you are able to select the options however can't see what you're doing? in that case I would search a video tutorial for a generic similar installation and simply follow the same steps using their screen as your guide.

I thought of that and tried it without success. I don't know how far through the process I get, cause I can't see the screen, but I suspect it might be when I am trying to get from the Android to the recovery menu. I really don't know if I get to it on the first try or not. It is such a crap shoot. You just don't know if you make a mistake or not. very frustrating. Thanks for the reply.
I have recently purchased a second hand (pristine) HTC One Max as an upgrade from my existing Galaxy Mega 6.3. To this point I have *never* owned an HTC device (having mainly had Samsungs with the occasional Nexus), so it is a bit of a learning curve to cross over!
One thing that I really like about the Mega is the 240dpi setting of the device, which effectively meant that Launchers (such as Nova) and Apps behaved like they were on a Tablet. With the large display size of these devices I find that these tablet settings make for a much better experience.
In order to change the DPI settings I need to change build.prop, which requires root access.
Is there a way to get a temporary root on my HTC One Max 4.4.2 to just make this (permanent) change (without unlocking bootloaders or performing an S-off)?
The more I read about the process for root the more I am worried about how tricky things are to revert back when I eventually sell the device! It seems, that unlike Samsung phones where you can just flash back an original firmware using the PC Client ODIN, that you need to unlock the bootloader, which shows a red warning message on bootup that can only be removed if you are S-Off. Reverting back to a precise stock state seems even more tricky (although I may be wrong - I have only just started researching!).
Anyway, the full process for permanent root seems rather complex for just a "simple" change, so I was hoping there would be an easier way!
Thanks in advance!
