hi guys
couple of questions:
i have a XEUK firmware on 2.3.4 at the moment, unbranded, unlocked and rooted and phone notified me that there's an upgrade available:
- will the upgrade work via wireless from the about menu straight away or i need to go via kies?
- apps, contacts, photos and videos are gonna be deleted?
- root, will that stay or i will have to do it again?
- camera, is the white balance improved when using flash with ICS? right now colors act up with the flash, thats a known bug..
that being said, my phone runs great so i am wondering if is worth or not to upgrade, i dont care of having the very very latest release...
for who will answer these few questions, thanks in advance!
Gabrio
1. I believe you do need Kies, I wasn't able to update my phone without it.
2. No, however I strongly recommend you to backup the phone, just in case.
3. You will have to root again.
4. Not sure about this one, sorry.
Honestly, I was extremely disappointed after update because, although everything worked just fine, the phone became a little laggy and I wasn't able to change screen DPI (I bricked my phone twice as well).

No you didnt, unless you fixed it via JTAG.
Screwing up while flashing resulting in rom not booting isnt "bricking" unless you cant enter download mode or recovery.

Thank you. I wish people would stop throwing around the term "brick" so loosely.
Okay, I got a bootloop twice. The point is, it hasn't been very stable for me lately.
That too... Stable means the thing runs without any issues and Ics do run without issues, you fiddled with it than say thing is not stable is also wrong.

Omg. Why don't u all kill him while your at it.
yay "bricked" is a wrong description and ics runs without issues.
a correction to "semibricked" would have been enough and ics isn't that great yet. Bit sluggish and very poor battery, even on cm9-aokp-aosp and cn,but the Devs is working hard to solve these "issues".

Thanks for answers everyone... At this point im not sure i will upgrade now.. I was really curious if they fixed the camer with flash white balance problem...
Anyone on ics up for a test? Just take a pic indoors with flash possibly in the evening or a bit of dark area..not pitch black of course, do colors look strange?.. As of now white balance looks really funny. With a quick photoshop fix looks good.. Agreed is just a phone but doesnt seem as so hard to fix..

Kill him?, stop over-reacting child. Simply correcting his misconception. Also yours.
There is no such thing as "semibricked", Its either bricked or it isnt, simple as that. Screwing up your flash which results in rom not booting as normal is not "bricked" or "semibricked". Its only bricked when it wont boot into rom, download or recovery and only option is hardware recovery like for example when you wipe/corrupt your bootloader.
i forgot to ask one thing... how is the battery with ICS? at the moment my phone does 1 full day with heavy usage and 2 days with moderate/medium usage...

Ok, I was thinking about maybe using that one click root app I found on the market but i need to know how safe is it? and is there a fully awesomely working version of Froyo out there or even gingerbread I can use and if so how do I install it?
And when the official froyo update comes out will my phone still be able to revive the over the air update?
Using the OCLF/Root was completely safe and easy, for me at least.
No issues at all doing it, it went very smooth with no issues at all.
Yes -- you can still receive OTA updates once you've rooted.
Ian
def no gingerbread out there for you to run
uhmmm i think if you arent even sure how to root, maybe you shouldnt get yourself into a beta rom.

Safe as in what? Secure wise or bricking your device? The Vibrant is easy to root but secure wise you need to be careful since your device will be "open" to any program getting root access.
I see people use the click app to root their phones. Check it out on YouTube that's where I found the info. Personally I am not going to root my cuz I don't want to deal with the headaches. Yes I have root one android phone before & was successful. I enjoy putting different roms but when I flash CM6 one his first updates on that then later on couldn't change the rom. The reason cuz I had a low memory I was told on the phone internally. So I am taking no chances with phone.

Too much work. Easier to add ps.
I be posting this from my wicked awesome vibrant!
Before Rooting....
1) learn how to use the keyboard
2) find out what Froyo and the consequences of installing a beta are
3) No, if you install Froyo probably you won't be able to get the OTA update when available and, you may not be able to roll down if you want to.
I would stay out of it if i was you
not worthy to just root to flash the leaked Froyo... You only get the 'skin' of Froyo.. there is no JIT and GPS is not working
I would not root, because judging by you, you dont know much about android.
Few devices have froyo,
No devices have gingerbread.
If you think gingerbread, or even froyo is out then chances are you dont know how to use root features.
ps. I am not flaming, k?

I understand what your saying, and believe me I know a lot about android and actually a little bit about rooting but I am super paranoid about bricking my phone for two reasons:
I love my phone.
I had to pay full price for it.
What I don't understand that much is about different roms and whatnot. As for the Gingerbread thing I was kidding, but I was serious about the Froyo thing...but after reading this thread i have decided that if I do ever root with the one click root app it will only me to install simple things like lag fix, adfree, etc. Thank you for your help.
To do it again, I would not root mine. It has been less stable since I rooted it. Crashes to a black screen that says "user fault not kernel panic" and "upload mode". This is using a simple one-click root. So I advise against it.
What you'd find, should a problem occur, is that there is no going back. Folks recommend install this patch and that patch, and deeper down the rabbit hole (further away from stock) you go.

you know the one-click root that comes with the one-click lag fix? The unroot part didn't work.
This was my experience hacking on the g1 too... sometimes things worked, sometimes they didn't. When they don't, it's a lousy trip.
I just get sick of messing with it sometimes, and just want it to work.
I have the GS2 for Sprint and I just got the new 4.0.4 update - I'm not happy. I was excited to get it, but after using it for one day I was less than thrilled. They have really retarded the ability to move quickly through the phone, LOTS of screen animations and transitions are added and really do make things much slower as the screens pops around on you and places buttons in different locations. I want these turned off ASAP. I went to the developer menu and "turned them off" as I was instructed from another website, but that didn't do a damn thing. Every menu change has a cute little animation adding time and lagging my muscle memory screen presses. The phone is laggy now, it wasn't before, at all.
Anyone else share my strife or know how to fix my issue?
Thank you
I totally disagree...since 4.0.4 firmwares have started to come out, i even managed to stay on stock firmware for a couple of weeks without flashing custom ones. S2 can take care of animations without lag.

Well, you "managed to stay on it for a couple weeks" implies that eventually you didn't like it.
I Don't have lag with the animations, I have lag with nothing happening, and THEN whatever it is I was going into pops up.
Test - right now I hit home screen and it takes about half a second, going into anything takes the same amount of time. This sounds rather trivial, but when comparing to the way it originally operated I think we're talking about a set back.
I'm not opposed to switching to another rom, but I've gotten to the point in my life where I use my phone enough for actual work that I don't have the time. Ideally, I would like the old ROM back, and rooted removing the bloatware.
I will do some research to see if I can achieve my goals, I just wanted to see if someone had an answer for my questions and see if I could avoid the issue altogether and get over the "Facebook layout" syndrome.

You're in the forum for the i9100, a phone that doesn't even work on Sprint.
The Sprint Galaxy S2 is the Epic 4g Touch.
No matter what phone , wether the original i9100 or the sprint one , things at first may seem slow , til everything is caching and stuffs ... Do a factory reset or format /data and /cache .. Would defenitly make a difference..(if it still lags try to disable the animations and transitions OR activate the force GPU and see)

Background: Updated my ICS unlocked i9300 to JB finally last night.
Can anyone advise why when i was on ICS, i was experiencing no lag at all and the entire experience was really nice, but now i have upgrade to JB the experience is very poor due to allot of lag and general system slowness? For example, if i kill the messaging app from long pressing the home key (with a kill all open tasks), when i re-open the messaging i will be greeted with only phone numbers on the display initially but then after a sec or 2 the names and pics are populated. Also another exapmle would be the keyboard (stock one), when clicking in the URL box of any browser or in the messaging app (again stock as before), the keyboard takes quite some time to appear!?!
It seems very odd to me as JB is supposed to be very good with it's "butter" but is not performing for me at all in the way it should?!?
Any help greatly appreciated as i now no-longer like my phone very much :crying:

Wiping was not done in my case due to the fact that it was not advised to do so via any point of the update and should have been setup to be more like the upgrade from froyo to GB and actually worked properly without having to do so on other devices. Why would anyone want to wipe the cache and dalvik if not prompted to do so via the official process?!?

Due to me not having much time at the point of needing to format and restore i decided to carry on for a few days until getting the opportunity, but oddly the issue seems to have gone now

Yeah i did this as well after the post about the guide menus (forgot to post update), and the phone is back to it's glorious state.
I have had this problem for a while now and been reading about it so kinda need some clarification :-/
I currently have a faint keyboard burnt into my background on everything i do on my phone which gets very annoying especially on light coloured backgrounds.
Turning your phone off / on is meant to cancel this problem but it has not worked , I have tried turning it off for short and long periods of times (upto a day).
Is there actually any real way of getting rid of this problem or is it a phone fault ?
BTW - If this helps, I have stock ROM 4.0.4 and currently using Nova Launcher Plus, also using original samsung keyboard.
Could be a problem with the rom. You can try flashing another stock rom, like 4.0.3.

Do you think this is a valid reason to take my phone back and request it to be replaced? Had this phone for just under a year now.

There is really nothing much you can do, because it is usually temporary. Try turning your phone off for more than a day.(you could try) to let the pixels or crystal return to their natural relaxed state.

Is it possible to update to CM11 nightly (or any other 4.4 roms... I'm not familiar with the scene) from 4.3 stock?
I did install KNOX, and then removed it. And then the Samsung service reflashed the rom again. So I don't know about it anymore. Didn't install it since then.
My story:
As many of you already did, I also installed the new update. Read below if you are interested (but you probably know all this anyway.)
So. A few days ago Google+ started to eat up my battery. I disabled it in the Application Manager and did not have the updates installed either. But it just started. My usual battery life dropped to only a couple of hours at max.
So I fired up Google and it said I have to install the updates. So I did.
Nothing changed. Then I went into Google+, signed in, and then signed out.
Nothing changed.
So all in all, I have a piece of crappy brick that I can't use anymore.
Bit of a rant: You gotta love this. You buy an overpriced product and they f... you over a thousand times. App makers, Samsung (4.3 crapdate), and EVEN Google. Then why the hell would I even want Android ever again? Seriously. If I would have to buy a phone now, I would pick an iPhone, no matter how much it costs more. This is just unjustifiable. "Hey customer, thanks for buying our product. Now let us make it all crap." ... WHY?
So yeah. Now I have no choice but to lose warranty (which I already used a few times because this is REALLY a crap quality phone). Not that HTC One X was any better, it had a faulty GPU/motherboard like 4 times. (Thanks Nvidia!) ... Sorry guys, I'm just infuriated.
Wish I could just change the phone down. I was thinking about Sony, but if Google can buttrape you anytime, why bother? No guarantee I can just fix it on Sony either.
CM10 is also fine
As I read the nightly can disable all GSM related operations (call/sms), so CM10 is also fine.
I just want to fix my battery life and have a stable phone again.

you should download your firmware from here
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/1/?model=GT-I9305&pcode=0#firmware
wipe everything then go into download mode
Use Odin http://www.android.gs/download-odin-3-07/
and after you flash this, do a factory reset within the phone or through its recovery

Thanks for the quick reply.
As I said my phone runs the 4.3 firmware now without any issue.
Except the 4.3 slow encryption and the huge battery drain. The phone got reset like 3-5 times in the past few weeks too.
So now I wonder if I can just install CM10 from 4.3.
But I need some confirmation as I know you cannot downgrade 4.3 for example. (Due to KNOX or whatever.)
Yeah should be no problem. My wife's battery drain happened too. I found the problem was with the SD card. I formatted it with the phone and it seems to be as good as it was on 4.12

Look you can go from any version of cm back to stock. CM doesn't change your boot loader or your modem. The only time your stuck on a version of android is when it comes to stock. Like as a note 3 users we are stuck on KitKat because they updated our bootlaoder. Cm based Roms it doesn't matter.
And you should get an SD card to hold your back ups just in case.
Also if someone helps you on xda it's kind of nice to hit the thanks button. It allow others to see that their comment was useful.
Good luck.
BTW if your new to rooted and ROM installing I suggest reading through the Dev section for the i9305.
Also google your issue word for word and there are tons of android forums out there which may help you.
A lot of times if you open a thread that has been answered a lot they will ignore it or throw words you won't like your way.
So good luck

I know you cannot downgrade from 4.3, nor use Triangle Away (due to KNOX).
Does this affect the move to CM? Or not?

has nothing to do with cm and triangle away will restore your binary count not warranty bit but I am not sure how knox effects the s3 as it does with the note 3
either way it never hurts to try things

Yeah if I'm not going to get an answer in a few hours I'll give it a go. It's a brick anyway, heh.
Just did my wife's i9305 today. Moving to cm/omni shouldn't be an issue, however be warned you lose a lot of features like HDMI out and the camera doesn't work as well. I just put the galaxy project ROM on there as the i9305 has the extra GB of ram which keeps stock nice and smooth, also you can debloat if the need be. And if you run into camera issues like I did simply flash stock kernel then reflash rom. Honestly unless you prefer KitKat its a waste of the extra ram your device has as most of it simply will never get used.
Also with wanam xposed you can customize everything! Can't do that with an iPhone. Sorry to hear you have had a bad run but while Samsung's software isn't exactly great the hardware is beast and once you learn how to configure it and unlock its full potential you will see you made the right choice.
i9300 | temasek 4.4.2 | boeffla kernel
Thanks for your reply!
- How worse will the camera get?
- What other important features you know? (HDMI does not really matter to me.)
I do use it a lot, so I don't want to lose everything. (Only use simple picture/HDR modes tho.)
Tried again every kind of combination with Google+ and it's still eating my battery like crazy.
I mean... what the hell is the "Disable" for then? It "almost disables" the app or what? lol.

Topic solved!
Installed CM without any problem. Everything worked flawless.
Now I have a fast (MUCH faster) phone. And all those god-tier features. Holy sh*t I love my phone now.
(I hate you Samsung.)
