Which takes more battery? I usually have clcok, battery, and weather widgets, but recently moved to a alive wallpaper that displays time/battery. Which set up takes less battery?
I personally think that widgets, and live wallpapers, do not realistically cause battery drain. I run Phase beam and my battery doesn't vary. I also use Gmail, Calender, YouTube, and Play Music widgets.

The only time it would cause more drain is when its actually displayed. So unless your phone sits with the LWP displayed for a long amount of time, I don't think you'd notice any difference.

This^^^^^^^. Lol I think back in the early days of Android and live wallpaper people were burning through their batteries so fast because they always had their screen on showing the phone off . Since that time, there have been so many kernel tweaks and tips to get the most out of your battery that I don't really think its that big of an issue anymore. That said, I would think that any Widgets/ apps that require constant updating would definitely be a drain on the battery. check the default update intervals on them, they are usually set to update every few minutes I know the 3g watchdog widget that monitors your data usage is defaulted at like every minute. Probably not a huge drain, but not necessary either. I usually set defaults at around at least every hour or more. Just a suggestion

I think you'll notice a bigger drain going from a black/dark wallpaper to a light/white wallpaper than you will from going from a normal wallpaper to a live one.
Also depends which live wallpaper, some from the market will destroy your battery in moments of keeping it on home screen.
I can attest to that. LWPs would kill my battery on GB. Haven't tried on ICS yet though.

Would that be the LWP actually doing that or all the crap bundled inside it like spyware, adware crap? It's a shame cause theres some really cool ones out there but they come with alot of crap unless you buy it usually I've bought a few

No I have seen some that don't come with bloat and it just kills your battery do the the rendering power it takes.

Yeah some of the higher class ones actually have settings in order to save battery. I bought a couple really jaw dropping ones and they have those settings to change what you need(change fps and such). I've seen some really ****ty bought ones too though. Good thing for the 15 minute rule! LOL

I just want to take this time and thank all the devs and people who have contributed to the release of the 2.3.4 build on xda. the wake up lag is gone, as well as the ui lag after first waking up the phone, and also it has the crt animation even with the lcd density issue, i just use launcher pro, so its all good. this is amazing!!! i don't know how my day could get any better!!
I really want to unlock my bootloader and install 2.3.4 but the whole voiding my warranty has me worried. I keep thinking what if something happens and I need a replacement. Oh man. Decision time.

Well, after I unlocked my bootloader, I had a nice little text in the top left of my screen that read "unlocked". But after having some problems (own problems, not because of unlocking) I flashed back to the .57 sbf, and the "unlock" text when away. Then after flashing the unlocker sbf, I didn't have to go to fastboot and do the oem unlock command. So, it's like the bootloader is unlocked (the fuse is physically blown) but the unlocked bootloader is not fully in place until flashing the unlocker sbf (whatever that does).
So anyways, if something did happen to your phone with in your warranty, do you think if you could still get into the RSD protocol support you could just flash the .57 sbf and it would maybe cover it up to Motorola or whoever checks the phone that the bootloader is unlocked? How do you think they actually check that? Or if they will actually go through the trouble to do whatever it is in order to check?

Yea, I'm really loving it too. It's so quick. Did you try setting the screen density in the build.prop file to 270 instead of 240? I did that and while things did fit on the stock launcher, it made everything bigger to where it almost looked distorted to me...I didn't like the way it looked so I set it back to 240 and just used the Gingerbread launcher.
I concur, it is pretty amazing. I love how I can use swype beta now. Loads better!

you could always use the swype beta on any version as long as you were rooted and uninstalled the stock version

im sorry i can't really answer this, partly because I just flashed it at 12 am in the morning and put it onto the charger and now its morning where im at. but in the few minutes i used it, it didn't seem to drain that fast

Can someone give me a heqds up where to get 2.3.4 at and how to get it. I have gingerblur right now.
The battery drainage issue has got to be a rouge app driving it down. My phone is at 70%. I took it off the charger last night after I flashed 2.3.4 and I had a ton of internet usage and a few calls today.
While I hate to say this, you should look at the "task manager" app that is included with the Atrix builds and actually use the Auto-End list function. Before I found out that I DoubleTwist was killing my battery and uninstalled it I was using this auto-end list to help take care of the other apps that were going stray.
Going back and paraphrasing what the CEO of Motorola Mobility said that all apps are not created equally and some are definately coded poorly and drive battery usage down. As much as we may hate to hear it, the guy is right.

2.3.4 was nice but in all honesty the offical release will most likely be out in less than a month and it will not have as many as the issues that this one has
I agree, it is quite amazing. The battery life is rather short now. It is definitely out of whack because I cab power it down at 70% and when I turn it back on it is at 90%.

Did you/everyone else with battery issues try wiping the battery stats or using the Battery Calibrator app?
I know most of you guys around here aren't new to Android or noobs but I use 2 of the weirdest apps and they really help me save a little battery so i wanted to share! If you already use these then carry on
1. LEDs Hack (root needed) is free in the market. Those bottom leds constantly drain your battery (at least it drains mine). Download the app and select the "droid 2" as your device and it will shut off those pesky bottom or top leds.
2. Screen Filter is also free in the market. This is one of my favorite apps especially on the photons super bright screen. Even at the lowest setting this screen is bright. Screen filter dims it and saves some juice! (or at least i think it does lol)
Of course there's other battery saving options as Motorola did a great job implementing awesome features even on the stock rom i.e battery/data profiles etc. Im pulling my phone off at 7am and when i get home at 5 its about 50% with moderate to heavy usage. I have my data profile to only use data when the screen is on and i can go a full 22 hours on a single charge!
Also turn your data off when your not using the phone. HUUUGE battery saver.

Sounds good but I like my phone to act how it was intended. I have 4 email accounts polling every hour, 2 GMail accounts, Twitter and facebook, use the phone as it should and still get 16 - 17 hours use on a single charge

That is what I do!
so far the battery life on this beast has been impressive IMO. Like the option to set the data but haven't had the need for it. But glad its there just in case I need to. Thanks for the other option OP
I agree. I have my phone to max settings for data, so when I get an email I know right then, and my location is being updated as the phone sees fit. I figured that I bought the phone so I can have all my communication now and setting it to anything other defeats the purpose. Also my backlight is set to auto.
yesterday I got 12 hours of battery with 4h32m backlight which was 2h21m of modern combat 2 local multiplayer and 48 min talk time plus 40 or so emails and txt and my local news app up with my browser getting news on the local wildfires.
incredible battery life! now if I can just stop the voice/3g from locking up all the time.
I get good life out of my Mo-Pho with HEAVY HEAVY use. From 6am to about 4pm, with heavy xda, blogs, FB, pulse, 3 GMail acct.s, news, weather, G+, YouTube... I think you get the point... Lol

it's so funny (in a way) that moto included these options and don't need them.. some other devices that I've read about/used could have absolutely benefited from these options/settings and didn't have them.. it's almost like moto said to us "see.. we care but you won't need this ****".. hahahaha

So i flashed stock rom back and..decided to play with screen dim and sleep settings. .its true the battery vamp...must be the screen!
This probably..goes back to any android device.
I set screen timeout to 15 seconds ya it sucks constantly turning screen back on but.it helped alottt.
I gained probably a good 3 hours batt life ans thats with heavy usage seeing as i use the thing all day constantly.
Just some insight if you want to gain a decent amount of battery life.

Does changing the screen timeout make a difference if you turn the screen off when you're done using it? I was always under the impression that the screen timeout was there for people who would forget to turn their screen of when they were done.

The big thing also is to strip out the bloatware as well. Can't believe how much bloatware was on the phone or how crappy the default browser is. It's like they are shooting themselves in the foot with sales since noobs would not know how to make the note snappy again.

for some reason, I trust google a little more than a browser developer....
If using dolphin HD, check Settings/About Phone/Battery Usage from time to time. It would stay at the top% on mine (above screen%). I uninstalled after seeing stay that way after a reboot.
I thought I had a bad battery when I first bought the Note. Even bought the dock charger w/extra battery. But for me, it's the 4G LTE.
Now that I'm back at work with it and connect to wifi, most of the day, I can get about 10hrs out of one battery on moderate use.
Try turning off sync when it's not needed, use Screen Filter app, built in task manager to close running apps, connect to wifi when you can. This will help!

I use Opera Mobile (not Mini). Switched the first day when I saw that the stock browser won't save the setting identifying it as a desktop browser - you have to change it every time you reboot. Opera doesn't have that problem.

i thought the stock was based on chrome, i guess not. i don't have ICS yet, so i'll have to wait for chrome beta. the stock wouldn't let me enter credentials for an IIS protected site (work needed), so hopefully this does!
I've been using the lowest brightness setting and gotten better battery life.

I've been using all sorts of different combos of roms and finally went back to locked MOF rom based off 2.3.5. But with no 4g in my new residence I'd like to go back to ICS. With this being said, which of the newly updated ICS rom have the best stand alone (not being assisted by any apps) battery life?

It really will be determined by what you plan to use on your phone? Any of the roms can give great or terrible battery life. I build the MIUI for the mighty little Photon. I love it, and the battery life is good enough for my liking overall (avg around 10 hours on an Anker 1600mAh battery). If you want better battery life, use the following:
1) Keep screen timeout down to under 30 seconds. Havina this screen on fora minute is just dumb...LOL
2) Set your e-mail accounts up to poll every 15 or 30 minutes. Having them on PUSH will require them to run in the background all day, and will reduce your battery life...especially if it's an Exchange one.
3) Turn off GPS when not in use. This is a KILLER on ANY ICS rom. It'll suck your battery dead faster than any other thing on your phone
4) Turn off wifi if you're somewhere you won't be using it. Having it constantly searching for open access points will kill your battery
5) Use a darker theme
My best advice...try all of the roms....since a flash takes literally 2 minutes, you can try them all. Flash it, run it for a day, see if you like it, then if you don't go on to the next one

Awesome! I guess I'll just have to see which has the least apps installed as a base... Any idea on which one has the least amount of apps starting out? I know CM9 is pretty lite

I get pretty good battery life on cm9 with powersave/deadline, profiles, slight undervolting and slight underclocking.10 hour of pretty moderate to heavy use and im at 55%.

No disrespect intended, sir, but I hate this idea. One of the first thing I do is crank my screen timeout up as high as it will go (10 minutes, I think). Nothing worse than your screen dimming when you're trying to do something. If I'm using it, the dimmer can back the frak up. When I'm done, I'll hit the power button and let it go to sleep.
That said, if I'm in low light, I turn the brightness down as far as it will go. Makes it easier to read. My CM7 notification toggle for brightness has two settings: Dim and 100%. I use both regularly depending on where I am.
Also, I find that battery use fluctuates a lot. I've gotten 20 hours on my stock battery -- that was in CM9 or Paranoid Android, one of the two (the latter is CM9 based, but the CM9 and Paranoid Android bases are outdated). I've also gotten as little as 6. I've never heard of a universal benchmark to measure battery life definitively. It's gonna differ every day because your usage changes every day. It's gonna differ from person to person because your location in relation to cell towers is different from mine. At home, my phone works its ass off to stay connected. At work, not so much. My 20 hour run was at work.
None of the ROMs have patently abysmal battery life. One thing that will definitely help is the lack of background processes, so any de-Blur'd ROM (including all ICS ROMs) would have a leg up over stock for that reason alone. Blur has so much crap running in the background, it's disgusting.
Oh, and Amazon Appstore and its notification spam. I bet that sucks up a bit of battery. "Hey hey look at me, you have X updates" *open Appstore* "No apps to update, trollface.jpg". Seriously, the Update tab should display a trollface when there's nothing to update, because you probably went there because of that stupid notification. Maybe use Titanium to freeze Appstore if apps you got through it don't require it to verify your purchase, and follow the free app of the day via Twitter via SMS or something.

Generally speaking, if you're in the middle of something, you really don't need the screen on any longer that 30-60 seconds.

Hey, good question about which ICS Rom having the best battery life. I would definitely have to go with CM9 by Jokersax. The battery life may be bad for a few days, but according to the replies and posts on his website. Battery life will be more exceptional after 3 days of usage. I like my CM9 Rom and it has better battery life everyday. But it is all based on personal preference.
I'm using CM9 7.0.0
Just got it last night and personally the battery life kinda sucks. But I just set up my profiles and whatnot. I also notice the battery life getting better.
Then again it could completely be my fault for always using my phone.

Well I've tested cm 9 for almost 3 days and battery life only lasted for 10 hours on moderate use. I then chose to go with miui for 2 days battery life again was a little bit better only getting 12 hours with moderate use. Then I went to the aokp port bill released and so far I've gotten 16 hours with moderate to heavy use my battery is only at 20 percent and the rom is amazing! Thanks th3bill

I switched to aokpcb and its working nice. Although I'm still ALWAYS on my phone. It lasts about 8 hours.
My usage is. Text/YouTube/mine craft all day :3

Just an update: I've been running aokp for 2 weeks and got 20 hours average but have decided to switch to paranoid and so far have pretty much the same battery life and it just keeps getting better thanks for everything you all have done so far you have truly made this one of the best phones on the market

The G2 has a fantastic battery already, why not make it even better?
I like to see how far I can push this phone's battery. In no way does that mean that you need too as well, but for those of you that do want a few more hours or another day, I'm happy to share what I've learned.
After I've spent time learning the quirks of this phone, and most of its respective ROMs, I've come up with quite a few tricks for improving battery life, some specific to this phone, some just in android general. I now get average 3-4 days battery life, when I use the phone quite often during the day all day long.
It is your personal preference on how much of android's background services that you use compared to apps. This is only suggestions for the users that want to improve battery life.
Heres some of the simplest questions you can ask yourself when you go through the settings center:
Do I really need this feature enabled? Do I use it often? Even if I do occasionaly use it, is it that much of a pain to just turn on when I need it?
Do I really need GPS on 24/7? How often do I really use GPS?
How many apps do I need running in the background?
Do I need to keep autobright on, or keep the screen super bright?
That being said, here are some of the simple things that Ive done.
I keep everything off unless I use it every day.
I keep GPS off 24/7, I never use it.
Out of habit, I always close all apps.
I keep autobright off and keep the screen on 14 brightness. Unless Im right outside in the sun its easy to see, and if I am I can just turn it up with the quick setting.
Some of the more advanced stuff I do, that completely varies on your ROM:
Go through all the system apps and freeze anything you dont use. Example being the Picasa uploader (for me at least).
Leave as little system services running as you need. You wouldent believe how many unneeded services android runs. On the stock roms there are TWO location daemons running.
Currently Im using CleanROM, I switch between it and Cyanogen about once a week, just cant make up my mind on stability v. features, but on CleanROM, some of the stuff I have currently froze
Nearly anything involving Verizon, the carrier APKs are massive bloatware.
I disabled a lot of google services, some people may rely on these, personally I dont, the biggest two google apps I use are chrome and Gmail.
If your on a stock based ROM, disable the LG services you dont use. Textlink wastes a huge amount of power, as does QSlide.
(This applies alot more to carrier based roms than it does Cyanogen/AOSP, but even they do have a few unneccesary servcices.) Be careful when you are touching system services, if you dont know what one does, a google on its function is helpful.
Use a different launcher. Excluding the stock google launcher, most factory launchers are very inefficient, LG Home is no exception. Personally, I use SmartLauncher, a very light and very nice looking launcher with a fantastic layout. Nova I know is very light on resources aswell.
The more widgets you have cluttering your screen, the more power they will waste.
I can personally confirm myself that Kitkat based roms have incredible battery life after they settle in for a few days, the kernel level improvements brought with KitKat are very noticable. Currently Gummy Rom and three CM11 builds exist for KitKat, why not give them a try?
If you have unusually high battery usage, check your wakelocks, and see what exactly is using all the power, and you can disable/turn it off and remove that battery drain.
On a final note, comeon guys turn your phones off at night. I have yet to hear a good reason to leave it running over night, all it does is waste power and most commonly let the notification light run for 8 hours. If you use your phone as a alarm, you could turn on airplain mode overnight.
These are just some of the things that I do, if you have any more suggestions, feel free to post them or message me, I'll be glad to add them to the list.
I do not own this device but whats the point of turning all the feature of your phone off just to get a couple more hours out of it just use it like you should and stop worrying too much...

What I do is abit extreme, but I enjoy seeing how far I can push it. A few people complained of low battery and wondered what I did. The guide is simply suggestions for improving. Most of a phones 'features' are rarely used.

I only buy a new phone when Verizon let's me, I just enjoy seeing how far I can push each phone's battery. Some people go crazy on theming, I go crazy on battery life. A few people wondered what I did, so I just made this.

I'll say this again, not everyone is aware of some of the lower level services that android runs that are completely pointless and cause a lot of wakelocks. This drills some's battery life down to 8hrs or less, which they then complain about. You would be surprised at the amount of stuff I have enabled.

GPS is not pointless, it uses for Facebook, navigation, weather update, yelp and a lot of apps.. what you deem is pointless is different than everyone...your reason to own a smartphone is seriously wrong in so many ways...just saying man but its your money.
Honestly people should just enjoy the phone rather than trying to make it last longer. If your phone can make it through the day then consider that a successful phone.

Some nice hints for someone needing more battery; however, I disagree with your assertion that closing applications saves power. Assuming you need to open the application again it would make sense to leave the application running (idle) in cached ram.

Instead of turning it OFF for the night, turn ON Aeroplane mode. That consumes less energy, than a turn off and on. This also solves the alarm problem, and no email or whatsoever shall wake you up at while you sleep

It completely depends on how often said application is opened, and what it does while idle. I know out of hand while I'm at work I see several people with 3-4 games left open on their phone, this is more what I was reffering too.
