Ok guys here's my situation. I purchased a brand new galaxy s2 (at&t) about 3 months ago (craigslist) and an issue has recently popped up. When I press the power button to turn on the lockscreen, a white line very briefly flashes down the screen. This doesn't happen at any other point at all, only when i turn to the lockscreen. I contacted samsung about it and they told me to take it to an At&T store to get it checked out. The problem is i purchased this from craigslist so I am not the original owner and I do not have the original receipt. There's no way AT&T is going to replace my phone then, right? what do i do?? any help would be appreciated.
Just let them know that you bought it on craigslist I'm sure as long as it wasn't reported stolen they should do something for you. Tho you might have to pay

Same kind of thing happened to me when I was on Verizon (so take this with a grain of salt), I traded my DroidX2 for a Thunderbolt. When I activated, Verizon informed me, I would retain the balance of the original warranty. AT&T does not warranty your phone, nor do they repair it, they act as an agent for Samsung in this regard. You should be able to find out when the phone was purchased from Samsung and you'd have 1 years warranty from that date.
If not, do you have insurance? Do you have a receipt from whomever you bought it from? The warranty is applied to the device not the owner usually, it should be transferable, although the laws on this would vary from state to state.
it still has the 1 year warranty but i don't have the original receipt nor is at&t my service provider. I unlocked the phone to work on another carrier. So if i were to walk in to an AT&T store would they replace it on the spot?
Call Samsung. I bought a Motorola Atrix from some girl on Craigslist. It ended up breaking a week later. I called Motorola and they said it was still covered under the one year warranty and told me to send it in. I got it a few weeks later working fine.

The problem you mention. . .you didn't happen to flash or install something that uses CRT animation did you? My phone does the same thing (horizontal line flash, middle of the screen) but it's built into the ROM. My apologies if you know the difference between the animation and a glitch. Just checking.
That sounds exactly like crt animation to me..
Assuming that isn't it, simply call Samsung USA. They will want the imei number to verify its not stolen and in warranty.
They will then email you a ups shipping label and rma info free of charge. Send it to Texas and you should see it back in 5-7 days.
They don't care if you are the original owner or not, just that it has a good imei.

i don't know what crt animation is but i know that its a hardware issue because it happens even on the stock rom.

CRT = Cathode Ray Tube. Old television. The CRT animation others are talking about is the emulation of the slow screen shutdown that ended with a white line across the middle of the screen that flicked off.
Where is the line your talking about, is it across the narrow part of the screen or along the long axis?
You can also check your phone under settings>About Phone> Build Number: See what is says. Also check your settings for an app called SU or SuperSU, that indicate superuser and root.
Wink
CRT animation is a feature on some phone that makes the display "flash" like an old-timey CRT monitor when you turn it on or off. It can be enabled on rooted Galaxy S2s.
First off, let's figure out if you're rooted or not. Do you have either the SuperUser app or the SuperSU app in your app drawer?
EDIT: Dang, beat me to it...

ok thanks. that's what i thought. crt doesn't even have animation for turning the lockscreen ON. so it definitely has to be a hardware issue. I'll call AT&T, thanks.

Yes it does. There is a CRT On animation and a CRT Off animation.
not on the aokp rom
CRT is the effect of old school TVs. When you turn the screen off, closes up into a horizontal line in the center of the screen for like half a second.

My Atrix 4g was working fine and then I set it off the the side while I worked on some homework and when I came back and tried to unlock it, nothing happened, the screen remained black although I could flick the volume up and down switch and get a vibration and a sound, it seemed to me like the device was still on and working just the screen was black. I pulled the battery and when I put it back the phone refused to boot and showed a red LED. I waited 5 min and pulled the battery again and this time the phone booted up perfectly and is still working right now, is this something I should be worried about? Should I bring it back to the store for an exchange?

Do you happen to know the exchange policy at AT&T? I have no warranty, but I've only had it for a week or so.
Also how do you know its just not a small software glitch or something that is insignificant and was a one time thing? Or do you think I should bring it back just in case.

If you bought it from AT&T then you have 30 days to return/exchange it. Tell them there is a software issue where it forces your phone to turn off. To be safe, you could call their corporate customer service at "611" and tell them the situation and they will note your account about the situation that way the reps in the store cannot turn you away.

What if I bought it from RadioShack though? They had a sale where it was only $150.. xD
Btw mine is rooted and everything, how do they check for root anyways? And in order for me to exchange it I'm guessing I have to factory reset, would that undo the root?

Radioshack should have a similar policy. You should be able to check it online.
No, a restore will NOT remove root. Which root method did you use? I believe SOC and aRoot both have unroot options. I had to return my first Atrix as well and I used Root Explorer to uninstall SU before I ran the unroot script to make sure it would be removed.
I returned my bricked atrix to radio crap and they swapped no problem

I used aRoot, out of curiosity what was wrong with your first Atrix?
I did a quick google and no one seemed to have experienced the problem that I had with the blank screen, although there seem to be no other issues and its snappy as usual. If I decided just to keep this Atrix and not go through the hassle of returning and then downloading everything and setting my theme back up and a million other personalization things I did, do you think I would regret it later?
Oh and do you think it would have anything to do with the fact I dropped my phone? I was just chilling in class and it fell out of my pocket. Lol it was like a 2 foot drop onto tile face first, although there are no visible damages aside from a scratch in the corner thats minuscule and took me like 5 min to find.
Also, the issue didn't occur until like a couple hours after I dropped it.

I brought mine back because of software issues like the battery monitor displaying the phone as charging even though it was unplugged, screen brightness was changing even though I had the auto turned off, little things that I haven't experienced on my second phone.
With yours, if you feel comfortable enough to hold onto it for awhile longer I don't see any harm in that. Radioshack gives you 30 days. There have been random reboot issues on some of the Atrix's so it might not be anything serious. I've had a couple issues with the screen freezing on me, which what could have happened on yours.

Well mine didn't randomly reboot, and the screen didn't freeze, it just blanked for awhile, I don't think its serious enough to constitute my phone as a "lemon". I'll probably end up holding on to it and seeing if anything else happens and if not then just keep it. Thanks for all the help though! :]
And if anyone else has experienced this issue or something similar, it would be awesome if you could share your experience.
Hi just bought my sgs2 few days ago and installed my first custom r roms, some of it come with nice crt off animation and all of them on my phone don't look as should, so I start to worry about my device.
When I press the power button in standard behaviour of this animation screen getting plain white colour for a moment and than is covered by a black bars from all four sides but in my phone the white background is full of some rubbish black/white dots and lines as typical memory bug or something with gpu, there is no other problems with this phone. I have tried many times with different roms, formatted cache and data, dalvik and all what possible but with no results.
Any of you noticed something like that? My phone is still under warranty or even can exchange it in shop for new one if broken but this animation is not included in any stock rom so no option to explain in shop what actually is wrong.
Or maybe this is a normal behaviour in this phone?
Another thing if I trying to get back to any of 2.3.3 stock rom I finishing with bootloop every time.
Thanks for all help

As you void warranty by rooting and or custom rom you would need to restore to original or at least stock firmware and reset the custom rom counter to zero via usb jig .

When in airplane mode it works correctly. Everyone has this problem, I really dont understand why rom devs put the effect in because it looks horrible.
Even in airplane mode it does not look like it should, its all white. But it is supposed to look like your screen distorting to red green and blue and then stretch out to the sides.

Heya
I've been searching around and havn't found any issues like this
But granted it's hard to describe and thus hard to search for
My Galaxy S2 is new (A few weeks) yet since new has had this issue. When powering the screen on (Lockscreen) the screen displays a white vertical line just left of the middle of the screen before powering on.
This line is NOT visible at all at any other time. Ran some screen tests without any evidence. Seems only to occur before unlocking
I have compared it side-by-side with my brothers Galaxy S2 so I know this isn't normal
Occasionally it will power-on normally but this is quite rare.
Had this issue from Stock, moved from rom to rom without change
Is this something to worry about? Could this be a sign of a failing screen, lose cable, crappy connection etc?
Is it worth sending it back under warranty?
The last thing I want it to do is to fail after the warranty expires
Cheers!

Sorry buddy, but It's really no prob.
It's an effect called CTR-animation (on or off)
This is an effect from an old TV turning on oder off.
So the display get crashed on a small line and goes off (CTR-off) or the display build up from white line (CTR-on)
If u using a Rom, just check ur apps for JKAY Deluxe... That's the app which manage such things.
There u can search for the two effects and turn on or off.

Ahhh well, was hoping I wasn't going to have to go down the warranty line
So, directly to samsung or through Mobiles.co.uk?
In the UK the seller is responsible for the warranty .
But you can go direct to Samsung .
Root or custom rom will void warranty restore to stock and reset custom rom counter .

Guess I'm going to be without a phone for a while
So I searched the forum for a bit and saw some people have similar issues but not the exact issue that I have. For some reason, my phone's power button only turns on the phone. After the phone is on, it doesn't work anymore. (i.e. will not put the phone into the lock state nor wake up the phone) The only way for me to wake up the phone is to plug it into the charger which will activate the lock screen.
Some additional information:
I am currently running Stock 4.0.3 ICS unrooted.
I have tried a factory reset on the phone.
I have also tried the *2767*3855# factory format code which is supposed to reinstall the phone firmware.
I was using the Go Launcher/Go Locker app as my default home screen and lock screen but this is still happening even after a factory reset back to TouchWiz.
This problem occurred after turning my phone back on this morning after it died due to running out of battery.
If anyone knows what I should do or can point me in the right direction, I would be grateful.

I have the same problem with my galaxy S2. I have changed the button, but it doesn't work anymore.
Sorry for my bad english, I'm french.
Hi everyone. Thank you for reading.
I am posting for help with a friend's phone. I, personally, have an S3 on Sprint and haven't had much experience with T-Mobile phones. He has rooted his S5 (T-Mobile, obviously) using galaxys5root.com (I'm now not fond of that site due to his bad experiences that consistently happen) and has not put a new ROM on yet. It has been successfully rooted for several weeks, but today he went to text someone a response and the screen went black, and the blue notification light breathes. It also does a light vibrate, like when you are turning it on. He's getting a replacement anyway, but we want to unroot it before sending in the defective device. I'm wondering (and to my knowledge it seems like) if it's a boot loop. Nothing shows up on the screen at all, not even the back light is coming on. I have yet to connect it to Odin to see if anything comes up. I'm just seeing if this has happened to anyone else and if they have figured out a way to resolve it. My suspicion is that there's a problem with either the boot sector or the recovery sector, as it does not go into recovery.
Any insight would be much appreciated. Thanks again!

It sounds like the LCD display has gone bad if the vibration and blue light function normally but you cannot see anything ever.
When they get the new device you might want to suggest that they follow the rooting instruction in this forum on XDA instead of going to a website to do it. Just my opinion.
We are thinking the LCD is bad as well, it just feels like a boot loop because the light vibration keeps happening (I forgot to mention that). Sometimes the blue light will go out and the phone will vibrate lightly and then the blue other starts breathing. It's just repeating that non-stop. I had to pull the battery.
As for him rooting through here, I told him to with his S4 and S5 but he didn't listen. The S4 took a crap, and now the S5 took a crap. I told him I think it's that site. The method is correct but who knows where those flash files come from... I've never had any issues rooting through here, just an occasional reset here and there, nothing as major as this.

Normally, even in a boot loop you see the initial Galaxy splash screen when it first starts booting. Then you see it over and over again. If you see nothing, it normally means the LCD is bad and unfortunately it's the most expensive part of the phone.
Good Luck with it.

Wouldn't surprise me if the device is rebooting itself trying to fix a hardware fault. Might be detecting the LCD has stopped forcing itself to reboot.
