I'm looking for some screen locking and encryption software for Windows Mobile 6 (or 6.1).
I'm looking for software that will lock the screen and buttons when the PDA is turned on, and require a password, either PIN or button entry.
I would also especially like a poison pill where the system would hard reset after a number of password failures, or failing that, at the very least it would autodelete the internal memory and PIM data. It would also be great if such a program had an OEM install for adding to one of DCDs ROMs, but that's more wishful thinking than an actual requirment.
I would be willing to pay for this software, but freeware is my first choice for obvious reasons.
Thanks to anyone who can help out.
Currently running Telus P4000 (aka Titan) with DCD 2.3.2, but willing to reflash to get the security software runing if necessary.

I don't know about a program will hard reset the phone on failure to authenticate, that is a hard one. But your phone should already have a security feature were you can add a pin to lock your phone or add a longer password.
Every time you boot up it will prompt you for a password.
built in security
The built in security can be bypassed by connecting to activesync, which is one of the reasons I want to replace it.

How can you bypass it through active sync?
I mean when I set the password and connected through active sync, it wouldn't sync or read unless i typed in the pin on my phone. It prompted me first and if i was unsuccessfull it would kick me off and not let active sync work.
PIN entry on PC
It's also possible to enter the PIN from the PC side (at least with WMDC on vista), which means it's easy to brute force the PIN.
There are programs that can do this, matter of fact, there are security programs out there that can remotley flash your phone should it ever get stolen or lost. Normally they are set up that you send a certain text mesage to your phone and it wipes itself clean. I just did a google search and found this: mSecure PDA
Features:
Function
Enforces security policies Windows Mobile, Palm OS and Symbian devices
Broad platform support including Windows Mobile, Palm OS
Reliable and automatic data protection, without downgrading the user experience
Protection on device or removable media using centrally-controlled, policy-based security
Remote data destruction if device is lost, stolen or subject to misuse
Sadly
"You're just a couple of steps away from an mSuite trial... Remeber that mSuite is for Enterprises only, requires a minimum of ten users for purchase and as an installer you will need Administrator rights to your corporate server. "

The price is ok, if I only had to buy it once that is. It seems like most of the software that does this is enterprise only.
There's another one called SafeGuard PDA but they discontinued the single user version before they got to WM6 compatability (and the WM5 version absolutely kills a WM6 device).
WM5
For anyone running WM5 who's looking at this thread someday, PocketSecure is a great program that does pretty much everything I was looking for but sadly isn't compatible with WM6 (or at least, the version I'm using anyway).
And I thought the cold war was over.
It seems if you guys want to get some James Bond gadgetry on your phones.
I understand this because we keep highly value data in our phones, but even if we do lose our phone they are is always a way to crack any locking mechanism or security measure if they have physical access to your device.
I mean if the other person is smart enough to do so.
True enough
I'm not planning on keeping national secrets on my PDA, it's just that I would like to keep some phone numbers on there that I don't want someone stumbeling upon if I'm draft enough to lose my phone or someone is quick enough to lift it.
The annoying thing is that there's a lot of decent software like this for Palm platforms. (TealLock, etc).

All security measures should start at the physical level. By not allowing others to steal our phones or lose them, but if you feel that you need software to secure your phone in any way check out.

they have many types of software that could help you. It is a start, better to be protected then not.

Sorry mate, I'm not sure if I'm just missing something there or if I didn't what I'm looking for properly...
I've looked through the handango store and while it's got plenty of good software for encrypting a file (word doc etc) and plenty of good stuff for storing extra data like passwords and credit card info, all I really want is something that will lock the PDA and the built in PIM (contacts mainly) inforamation.
I'm *not* looking for a way to encrypt my storage card or individual files in main memory (and I've already got a password managent program that encypts that data and syncs it with my laptop).
P.S. It's not like I don't plan on keeping my phone secure, but the idea is that good security STARTS with physical security, it doesn't end there.

Hmm I have looked for some apps that describe your needs and found some, but they are for WM5 ...... you can try it out and see if it works. As some cabs from WM5 still work..
Well here is another website that might help out..
http://pocketpccentral.net/software/security.htm
Other then that I would recommend using google to search for your needs due to the fact that not many people here post about this.
http://www.truecrypt.org the windows version can install a program to mount a truecrypt encoded card on your PPC, but so far I dont think it can encrypt on it.
also found this http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...CF-EF96-4567-B817-215E24668F75&displaylang=en
Dont know if these help, worth a look maybe.
Hi guys, this is my first time ever owning a smart phone and i dont know crap about them.
So my problem is this...
I have personal pics of my gf, is there any cheap or reliable app that can allow me to lock the pics.
I tried DL'ing WMkits photo encrypt but that **** is almost $20 i believe is too much for a phone app.
Now my gf on her iphone can easily access her albums without looking for the folder. She simply clicks on the album, enters the password and tara! pics are there.
Is there anything similar or as fast for the HTC HD2? I'm willing to pay $10 through pay pal to whoever can get me an app or help for this. lol
Thanks!
how abt this one http://www.sharewareconnection.com/viscrypt.htm
awesome! i'm seriuous about the $10 where do i deposit?
Wait, nevermind. It can't run it. FML
Do you want them to be encrypted the moment you take the photo ?
Or, do you want an easy way to use them with a bit of pre-work ?
If so, the last one is easy.
Get FreeOTFE (a freeware file encryption software that is useful for protecting all kinds of info).
Create a volume (container file).
Associate .VOL extension with FreeOTFE (in program options).
Put a link to that file in Start Menu\Programs.
Whenever you click on the shortcut it would bring up FreeOTFE and ask for a password. Once you mount the container it becomes a folder in your system. Any file you put there is automatically encrypted and will be inaccessible the moment you dismount the container.
It still requires you to manually mount and dismount whenever you want to access the files or put new files there.
Resco Explorer also has an encrypt/decrypt feature.

Try Sinantech CryptoStorage, search in Google...
I am an IT Consultant and I like to keep my client network documentation on my View but that also leaves a gaping security hole because Android lacks real security. Before I got the view, I used Dropbox and Truecrypt to keep a container in sync between my main computer and my traveling notebook and a thumbdrive so that I always have access to these documents. Up until last night, I was unable to access a TrueCrypt container within Android, when I found EDS Lite which purports to be able to open the file.
So I installed Dropbox and EDS Lite but I am unable to figure out how to get Dropbox to sync the container to the View and then where to find the container using EDS Lite. I have tried google to no avail as I cannot find a dropbox folder. Anyone want to give me a heads up as to what I am missing?
Easy.
Use Cheetah Sync for Files/Folders
or
FolderSync
Thanks!
Nice find. Thanks for the response. These might just be the droids I am looking for...
you can find the synced files (mark favorite on dropbox first) on sd folder android/data/com.dropbox.android/yourfiles. then add container in EDS.
There's also called cryptonite. Here's the link about truecrypt porting
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=872297&page=7
Yeah, maybe easier with folder sync anyway...
TrueCrypt
I like the idea of truecrypt volumes on the device, as this allows for them to automatically 'lock' the volume when the device is locked and to not unlock it even if the device is unlocked and to require the pass phrase to unlock it. Everyone should be this paranoid about the security of their devices especially in wake of the court decision that a simple traffic stop is enough to allow a police officer to activate your phone and look through it. Even if no citation or charges are issued and consent is not needed. They cannot force you to unlock it or to give them the pin / password / pattern to unlock it. There are dozens of new laws enacted each year and there is always the chance you are awry of some law that could land you potential jail time. You never know what could turn up in the background of a picture on your phone that The facial recognition is a joke as it can be activated by holding the phone in front of someone's face. You should always refuse a search of your person or vehicle and you should always exercise your right to an attorney and exercise your 5th amendment rights. I really want a fingerprint reader on my phone like I have had on my notebooks for a decade.
Hi there, i have a quicksheet on my Razr in which i save a few of my bank details that i may need on person at all times due to nature of my job. I need to password-protect that file of mine. Any ideas???
There is no way I would store that on my phone with a simple spreadsheet password. They are easily cracked.
I would find an app that would encrypt the file to your password. I don't know if there is an equivalent of Truecrypt for Android.
I heartily agree with 85Gallon... but... if nobody is going to lose money or their job if this info is discovered, then you might consider App Protector by Clutch Mobile (formerly Carrot Apps). It will password protect any app. However, any serious player on XDA could circumvent it fairly quickly. App Protector does not encrypt anything. It just puts a lock on apps that might access that data -- and it's not that great of a lock.
If you work for a bank and you need to keep a list of addresses, Managers and their personal cell numbers, maybe this is enough. If you're storing anything more critical, listen to 85Gallon and find a better solution.
I would suggest "Sec Notes". It stores data encrypted using AES encryption in a database. Notes can be Notepad, Spreadsheets and checklists. Spreadsheet supports formulas too, so it might match what you want. Best part is it allows automatic backup to Google Drive and Dropbox. You can also backup to SD cart manually any time.

Hi guys, I was just thinking if my PC , from which i read emails sent for my gmail account which is the same account I have on my Android device , gets hacked one day, and the hacker also has some virus app hidden at Play Store, if he could remotely keep installing this virus app at my Android device perpetually , even if I format my device .
Gmail is pretty bullet proof as long as you don't bring in downloads. What's kept in the cloud, stays in the cloud.
Never in over 12 years had a virus infect either Android or Window device via Gmail. Which is why I use it.
Most infections are downloaded or installed by the user including those nasty jpegs and pngs. Had one recently that destroyed files in my downloads folder but never got beyond that.
Perhaps because I discovered it within minutes and was able to isolated it ie delete it.
Simply changing your password after the Android reload would defeat the hacker anyway. Right?
For real paranoia there are viruses that can allegedly escape a reload purge by hiding in what should be immutable areas of the internal memory. Presumably only a firmware reflash could eradicate them.
The SD card is another hiding place...
Keep at least 2 hdd backups of it that are physically and electronically isolated from each other. Enforce this isolation if there is the slightest sign of malware until it's eliminated.
Losing your head with a infected device can destroy your whole data base... got to keep them separated.
It may get one, even two devices but not the isolated hdds unless you screw up bad.
Tks for the reply and for the hints
The reason for my thread was that I got at my new tablet, an adware which would pop up the Google Play Store with the app IQ Option ( a Forex app , from IQ Option ) . The IQ option "pop up" started after installing Netflix , Amazon Prime and... a paid calculator app called Calculator Infinity from Inception Mobile.
I already contacted Samsung which asked me to take the tablet to the repair service, I contacted Google which asked me to take numerous steps which didnt prove succesful, including formating the device.... It has stopped after 2 months, not sure why ( Android update??? Banishment of IQ Option Forex of Brazil due to law transgressions??) . I dont think it was the law enforcement since I saw some cases reporting this virus at another foruns after the banishment of IQ Option... Due to the pandemic, I didnt take the tablet yet to service repair. Planning to do it at march. But I would like some more advices... Dont want to migrate in the future for IOS because of this.
P.S: Ive already flagged the app at the Google Play Store, but Im afraid Im pointing the wrong culrprit... Nothing happened , so maybe Google didnt find anything...
If you reloaded the OS that should be the end of it unless you installed it after the reload or it's in your data that you added after the reload.
It may not be the app(s) you suspect...
Scan with Malwarebytes.
Thats the question, it was a new tablet . I instaled only Netflix, Amazon Prime and when I put this calculator app, the problem started. As soon as the the problem started, I ran the antivirus that comes with Samsung tablet ( McAfee ) , and nothing was detected, I later instaled Avast, nothing was detected, then AVG, nothing was detected again, but the problem continued for 2 months.

Forget all the mentioned scanners and comparable ones: they all are absolutley useless on Android. These scanners all exist for one purpose only: to pull money out of the pocket of fearful Android users like John Doe / Jane Doe
Take note that latest Android versions by default come with AVB ( read: Android Verified Boot ) feature, what prevents any changes can be made to Android's system - of course unless this feature gets disabled by user ( what is a bit complicated because user must know how to modify device's bootloader ).
Knowing this you must not fear Android's system gets infected, IMO.

So what does explain the autonomous opening of Google Play at the app IQ Option on my new Galaxy tab s6 which was acquired at the beginning of 2020? This behavior lasted from february to april and resisted, during this period, inumerous factory resets. Was it caused from an adware installed by the calculator app?? Was an app remotely installed from a PC virus that used the same Google account of the tablet? Or was something else?
