I'm having trouble on deciding which phone to get. Should I purchase the galaxy s 2 or the nexus s?

I presume you meant Galaxy Nexus
Do you have a prefernce between touchwiz and google android? If you prefer the look and feel of the latter (e.g. CM9 look), go for the gnex, otherwise i'd go for the S2

hey guys,
i'm currently doing some research for the 14 y/o brother of a friend, whose parents have just allowed him to get a smart phone.
i only ever bought nexus devices and would recommend him the nexus s, but unfortunately his limit is ~180 euro and the nexus s is ~270 euro here in germany. thus i need some advice.
he can't decide between the galaxy ace and the wildfire s. which one would you pick? i'm looking for things like easily unlockable bootloader, stock android and cyanogenmod support. but those things seem to only be found in older, cheaper devices.
what would you say has the best bang of the buck and is future proof and could possibly get cyanogenmod support?
thanks,
x
I would go for the galaxy ace because it has more development.

yup, that's my observation so far. there's even an unofficial cm7 port for it.
until i can come up w/ an official supported device in the price class, i'm gonna tell him to go for the ace, or if possible pay 100 bucks more for the nexus s.
Yeh galaxy ace if you want to root it, wildfire s has not been cracked open yet so has very little support

Not true .
galaxy ace..
samsung updates their firmware fast compare to htc..
I would go with ace.
However i found only one issue where you will need to remove the battery to get it back to work. When you enable the wifi and leave the phone idle for a long time, the screen goes blank and none of the button seems to work. You will have to pull the battery to fix it.
Lol looks like someone prefers form over function.

I was just saying that not any samsung phone could "fit the bill" .
Galaxy Ace for sure. It has more support, plus, he's 14, I'm sure he and his friends will care about the looks a lot. Teenagers are very judgmental really.
I really hope CM7 is ported to the Galaxy S3 as I think it will perform really really well....does anybody know anything or do you know about as much as me? Lol

CM will defo be built for the SGS3 im sure but it will take a few months to get it right.
CM7 will not be on the SGS3 as its Gingerbread based, CM9 will be the likely candidate Dont hold your breath though
JD
CM9 is WIP for I9300 atm

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest i will stay with TW as i like the direction Samsung have taken it
I was running CM9 on my S2 and wouldn't touch a TW rom on the S2, that said i think i would feel disadvantaged running CM9 on S3
Has anyone heard anything on CM9 for the S3 yet??
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
No. CM7 will not be ported unless you want to port it which makes absolutely no sense at all. The Galaxy S3 is ICS natively and to go back to 2.3 is just silly.

SpeedJ.. Yep, xplodwild teased a screenshot a little while back. Its running on the GS3 but probably buggy as hell. When its stable and ready for release we'll see it. But it IS in the workx

Any flashable themes that achieve that ?
As much as I love the superiority of the hardware of this device , I am not a big fan of its aesthetics software wise and loves the ICS look on my old Galaxy nexus .
Oh imagine if Samsung release a nexus version of this phone.. How sad wouldn't you be

I will simply sell this one and get the nexus ..
I love the pure android experience without the stupid bloatware, but their hardware isn't the best ..

Agree about the hardware. I can live with some bloat thou.. I don't mind touchwiz either... It's mostly theming etc, but cm9 isn't that far of either..

Maybe one of the ROMs is ICS themed.. haven't checked myself, been enjoying stock rooted. But I too loved the new look if ICS and that nice blue, and icecream like contacts
*edit* looks like Omega ROM has an ICS theme available. Maybe that will work for you! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1693318

You will probably get more response if you post this in the Nexus section.

I have a SGSII. I can test the Nexus and personally I won't change for it. Ok, the update can be faster, but if you can put CM10 if you want the last version (yes, with some bugs, but they make a excellent job).
Only my opinion...
Nexus' biggest disadvantage: no microSD slot!!
Sent from my GT-I9100
in galaxy nexus 5mp camera. in sgs2 8mp camera
there is no sdcard slot in galaxy nexus.
I choose sgs2 and I don't want change it for galaxy nexus
Have a look at them both here
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung-phones-9.php
Personally would not have a Nexus over SGS2 regardless of updates

Yeah but the s2 is a better device, and it's already on jb. So idk what you mean by fast updates?

Reconsider...
may sound like a good "upgrade" but really I promise it isn't... Galaxy Nexus is same guts with a lesser camera... a more clunky feel in your pocket and lacks gorilla glass.... the development that is going on in the xda community here is far superior to anything you will find stock from the nexus... before you jump ship... give the team's work a try.

updates from google, we have cyanogen with fantastic roms but lacks close sources like video calls and nice camera app like on stock samsung roms
i think the updates to use all the features from the phone are better in nexus devices

u are right, the camera on S2 is amazing, but i have to ask u this, do u have an GNEX? and why the question? im aiming google experience and not the score on quadrant, i know the cpu is the same speed, i know tha S2 as a better gpu but i dont play games
i just dont want to regret after i make the trade
As the other people said, galaxy s2 is better, if you want a fast phone then flash resurrection remix rom

Hi, I am having trouble deciding on which phone to buy. I can get the S2 for 60 dollars cheaper. I am just wondering what are your thoughts ? I know there are threads like this already, but I just want some opinions. Thanks alot guys !
S2 is better. There was similar thread in Q&A why, maybe you'll find it

Well, the only difference between the two would probably be the HD screen and the camera. The Nexus is probably more future proof though. In your opinion, what would you go for?
Go for S2 or S3 if you like big screen ..cheers

You know, I also had to make decision - S2, Nexus, S2, Nexus... and I choosed S2.
Nexus has no microSD slot, which is important to me.
I'm using CyanogenMod as a daily ROM, then I don't need official updates so much.
But, that's only my opinion.
Go for Nexus.

Any advantages?
My personal opinion would be the Galaxy Nexus, because it's going to get updates for years. The S2 is already a bit forgotten by Samsung in my opinion. The Nexus is pure Android without any other companies making their own "version". Remember that this is all my personal opinion.
