I have a rom GB from CheckRom v6,
i want a rom ICS (Dynamic v1.4)
Dynamic say:
IF you have Gingerbread ROM...
- Flash first stock ICS Firmware, after flash CF-Root kernel for root and recovery.
- You can follow the guide above cited
if i pass the GB to ICS with CWM and WIPE. any problem with that?

- Download the ROM and put it on your S2.

I guess you could try. But if the ROM dev says in his instructions that you need to flash stock ICS first, I would listen to him. Maybe it needs the ICS bootloaders? Who knows?

But that question has to be asked of the guy that made the rom he built the rom and their must be a reason for a stock flash .
Cannot see him putting instructions that are not actually required can you .
You can always try all you will get is it works or a non booting phone .
Or even pick another custom rom with simpler install instructions .

Normally there should not be any issues...but
if flashing a stock ICS is a VERY BIG deal for you try someother ROMs who dont recommend to flash a stock first, like OMEGA....
a rom from a portuguese guy dont need instal stock rom first.

Generally speaking, instructions are given for good reason. Skipping steps and saving time usually tends to lead into problems, bootloops, or straight out bricked phones.
Flashing a stock firmware only takes a few minutes anyways... but to each their own, I guess.

Okay okay.. hello. I'm a new girl at XDA and thus new to all this rooting stuff.
First and foremost, I'm on Android 2.3.6. I used the XWLA4 insecure kernel to flash my SGS2 (since my official Samsung kernel is indeed XWLA4) and used S2Root to install BusyBox and superuser, but I had no CWM recovery so I manually installed CWM 4.0.0.2 via Odin.
It worked like a charm Now came the time to flash a custom firmware. I was thinking of MIUI, CM7 (because I didn't like stock ICS that much) and this new Fatal1ty Extreme ROM. In fact, I liked said ROM so much that I wanted to have it on my phone + the Red theme. And that's where the annoyance began..
I've carefully read all the instructions, but I didn't understand one:
"Copy the ROM to the Root dir of your SD card."
I thought it was just some directory in my USB storage, so I connected my device to my computer and connected the USB storage, yet I didn't find any folder named "Root" or anything that resembled a root directory.
After 1 hour of googling and extensive research, I was so annoyed that I just dragged the ROM + Theme to my USB storage.
I boot into CWM recovery, did a wipe (data/factory reset, dalvik cache wipe etc.) and then installed the ROM. When I rebooted, THIS happened:
I was stuck at the first screen, the one that said "Samsung Galaxy SII" on it with the yellow triangle!
And this screen did not go away until I boot my phone into download mode and flashed the official XWLA4 kernel from Samsung, aka unroot my phone.
After Unroot, my phone worked like normal. No bootloops, no being stuck on the first screen etc.
Can someone please shed light on this? Touchwiz isn't exactly my cup of tea anymore and I really would like to give my phone a custom look ._.
Thanks in advance
EDIT: It seems that this problem seems big, as every ROM that I flash (with wipes) takes <5 seconds to finish, and that usually means that it's a bad flash ._.
Can someone tell me how to solve this?
I've carefully read all the instructions, but I didn't understand one:
"Copy the ROM to the Root dir of your SD card
Root = copy the rom to the sd card not inside any folder .
DO NOT put anything in usb storage it is not the instructions for anything SD CARD only internal not the external one .
Connect phone to pc in usb mass storage mode copy the rom to the phones internal sd card only .
follow with CWM and root phone via Odin
Root + CWM .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Then boot to recovery and install the rom .
That is an excellent choice of rom by the way .

Well, I didn't put it in any folder and certainly not in the folder that says "usbStorage" on it. Please excuse me for my aloofness in this matter as I still don't quite understand how to access my internal SD card.

Doesn't work Tried that, but still doesn't go past the first screen..
EDIT: Maybe I should just flash it and then wait for it to boot.. I read similar situations where people flashed ROMs and they too were stuck on a boot screen, but in reality it really took so long due to the caches being rebuilt ._.
I'll try that. If anyone has suggestions, post in here

Unrooted again.
I want to flash Fatal1ty Extreme with the Fatal1ty Red Theme package ._.
I'm on the stock XXKI4 firmware with the XWLA4 kernel ._.
When I root my phone with CF-Root-SGS2_XW_OXA_LA4-v5.0-CWM5 kernel from Chainfire, the root is fine but when I flash Fatal1ty via CWM, it says "installation complete" but I can't get past the first screen ._.
When I root my device with the XWLA4 insecure kernel and then root it with S2Root, still nothing.
I even tried flashing Redpill 1.3 (auto-root) and then flash Fatal1ty, still nothing..
I'm always stuck at the first screen ._.

Looking at the pic you posted you've downloaded the rom and theme twice (?). It will prevent a sucessful flash. Experience.

Well every time I tried flasing a file like that ( e.g : update-cm-9-20120331-CODEWORKX-galaxys2-signed(2).zip) it will not work.
I tried two different ROMs: The Thebyani ICS one and the VK ICS one.. both have the same problem as Fatal1ty: They're stuck on the boot screen.
EDIT: It seems that this problem seems big, as every ROM that I flash (with wipes) takes <5 seconds to finish, and that usually means that it's a bad flash ._.

Okay, here's a sum-up of the problem thus far:
1. Root is fine with any kernel, device functions without any problems.
2. When I want to flash a custom ROM via CWM, it takes <5 seconds to finish and is stuck at the boot logo.
3. Unrooting solves this.
Something must be faulty with the device... Flashing kernels and back to stock is without any complications, yet when I wanna flash a custom ROM, it's stuck at the boot logo ._.

I am running Stock ROM with root and CWM recovery and Kernel of ICS 4.0.3. I want to flash a different kernel(just the kernel), but backup my old(official one) in case I need to flash it back.
So, how do I backup my original kernel, in a easily re-flashable format and how do I recognize unsupported/supported kernels for my stock rom?
Also, is it true it's much harder to flash kernels(perhaps the original) on a stock rom, than a modded one?
You can try flashing Siyah Kernel either the CWM or Odin ones.
You don't have to backup your stock kernel as it can be easily download in XDA
example from Intratech Thread...
Siyah Kernel:

Stock kernel from Intratech:

Good Luck & Happy Flashing.
Right, I downloaded the official kernel, just to have it backed up, but it's in a zImage format, not in a zip. How would I go about flashing it back via CWM recovery?

From CWM Manager, select Flash Kernel, and select the zImage you previously put on your SD-card. The kernel will flash and the device will reboot.
I dont have any Flash kernel option in cwm recovery. And the link to the tar is for Odin, not for CWM

Not CWM recovery. He said to use the CWM Manager app in your app drawer. It should be there if you flashed a CF-root kernel.
I have not flashed any kernel yet since i cant be sure if I can flash the original back. Does siyah provide this cf-root?

Siyah and CF-Root are two different kernels.
Both have forms of CWM Recovery packaged with them, but they will be slightly different.
I think you need to read some more.

i dont think you can backup the stock kernel just go there:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1640812
are all zip - so u can flash via CWM
Kernel != ROM.
I might be rooted but I did it straight from the phone.
I just want to flash a different kernel just for the fun but with the ability to flash the original back, get it?
The link that was given to me has kernels in tar format or whole roms
if you got stock your NOT rooted..
link works fine for me with *.zip files which can be easily flashed in cwm recover (vol up + power + home)
roms come WITH a kernel
just click the link above - dll your xwlp7 stock kernel and try CF Root (for beginners)
get it?
But I don't want the rom, just the kernel. And just as an fyi, I used the root method which doesn't require flash with Odin. Yes I have the Superuser app.
My 3g is so slow that by the time i download any rom it will be 2022. Kernel is smaller thus dlfaster download(sort of)
Um ok which method is this? (this one? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1679778 ? i9100G?) i think i already read this but didnt try - i used to flash via odin at the beginning now i go for CWM Recovery to flash ;-) i only root per Kernel..
Link posted before still work fine - those are also (or only) Kernels
so i still dont get your Problem
Just go for any (supported) Kernel and flash - if you+re not happy go back and flash stock kernel (dll before..)
Cwm recovery requires zip files whig have boot.img inside them just like the siyah kernel, but the original kernel is just a zImage file produced when the Linux kernel is compiled and I don't think its fit for flashing
CWM Recovery is like Download Mod - you can get there via "the 3 Buttons."
I think you talking bout CWM - the Touch Version of it?
You need the zip file Kernel - could you give me the link to your stock kernel which is in (you say) zImage?
This is the one I downloaded http://skywanker.net/download/download.aspx?link=GT-9100/Kernels/Kernel_I9100XWLP7.7z
I'm sitting in the same boat and sorry to Jack your Thread, But do you know when you flash a Kernel, does it need to be rooted before hand or not? "Auto-Root" is on the Specifications so a little confused :fingers-crossed:

According to this, you still have your stock kernel, right?
So it also sounds like you just want to dump your current kernel as a backup. In that case, just download HC-kTool from the Play Store. It will allow you to dump your current kernel. It also allows you to backup your EFS, which is useful.

No, you do not need to be rooted before flashing a kernel, and in fact, some kernels, when you flash them, will root your phone for you.
That's good to hear, Also my is Phone is under Contract With Three (3) will everything be alright for example minutes I don't wanna end up unable to use my SIM? :')

Just be sure you use firmwares/kernels meant for your device.
For example, if you have an i9100, do NOT use a firmware or kernel for an i9100G, or any other device.
Hello Gentlemen,
Last time I managed to root my device Samsun galaxy S III (GT-I9300) via CF-Root 6.4 and it was successfully rooted,
This was the last time it has been rooted, afterwards, I upgraded and flashed a Jelly Bean 4.1.1 via Odin and found out that Root has GONE !!!
That's okay, but the most amazing problem is, the device does never get rooted no matter how many times I try to root it via the same method mentioned above (CF-Root 6.4),
I though afterwards that this is because CF-Root needs to be updated or something, so I reverted back to ICS 4.0.4 by flashing a stock md5 ROM over.
I tried the CF-Root 6.4 and found out it does not work anymore, please help me gentlemen as I spent the last night trial & error, never succeeded.
I am doing all of this just because I want to flash the HD 14 Android Revolution ROM made by Mike here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1797334
I hope there was an md5 or tar file (Odin flashable) so that it could be much easier to flash for people who are stuck with this situation.

similar problem
Hi, Im having a similar problem, I was rooted, upgraded to 4.1.1 through kies and it was rooted no more. I rooted it again and no problem. I tried a custom rom and it had an issue with wifi so I went back to stock. Now Ive loaded the stock back on and after wiping/factory reset and clear cache it still says Im running a custom binary, system status is custom also, so trying to root it again so I can reset the flash counter and load my backup but it keeps getting stuck on set up connection on odin and eventually fails.
Ive been at this all afternooon with out much luck, can anyone provide me with some guidance on this?

I can't see anything like SU or CWM or anything else, besides, I use root checker and it tells me that I am not rooted yet.
Any idea why this is happening?
Also I noticed that upgrading to Jelly Bean changes the SDCard name to Sdcard0
After flashing CF-Root with Odin, your phone should restart in custom recovery to install SuperSU and CWM app
If it's not, try that:
-Flash CF-Root with "auto-reboot" disabled in Odin
-once flash is done, unplug your phone from the computer
-restart in recovery with VolUp+Power+Home
It should trigger the apps installation process

Description: This is a guide (based similar to my previous guide for the Verizon Galaxy S III) that will help you flash a 99.9% stock factory image for the Verizon Galaxy S4 overwriting every partition on the device back to stock. The ONLY major change I have made is for your convenience I have modified the factory image to keep all your data/apps/settings and internal storage partition intact. This method should help you restore from any soft-brick that you may encounter without having to wipe your data.
Minor Warning: Please note that if you had any special mods that you had to manually flash before or move on the system partition (like Google Wallet, AOSP 4.2 apps like camera and gallery, etc...) they will be lost as you are overwriting your system partition to factory stock. Please make sure to do the needful with your mods before following this guide (for example resetting the Google Wallet app).
Step 1 - Preparation
Download and Install Samsung Official USB Drivers - Link
Download and extract ODIN v3.07 - Link
Download and extract the correct Factory Image below (modified with No-Wipe):
For VRUAMDK Build (Look for this) - Link
For VRUAME7 Build (Look for this) - Link
For VRUDMI1 Build (Look for this) - Link
Click to collapse
Step 2 - Flashing Factory Image
Boot phone into ODIN mode (See here for how-to)
Flash the Factory Image using ODIN v3.07 ***in PDA section only*** (See here for guide on flashing)
You should now be able to boot back to Android and all your data should be intact exactly as it was
Click to collapse
Step 3 - Restoring Root (Optional)
Just follow one of the below guides again after you are back up and running:
For VRUAMDK Build (Look for this) - Link
For VRUAME7 Build (Look for this) - Link
For VRUDMI1 Build (Look for this) - Link

Step 4 - Restoring Custom Recovery (VRUAMDK Build only!)
Make sure you are rooted first
For official TWRP Recovery follow the steps in this thread (or download from Goomanager): Link Here
For official ClockworkMod Recovery just download ROM Manager app and install from there
For CWM-based Recovery follow the steps in this thread: Link Here

Absolutely, just with this one make sure to do your own data wipe afterwords since this one doesn't wipe it automatically.
It didn't put me on stock recovery so i was still getting that unlocked bootloader thingie, but I found a stock recovery and it worked like a charm, thanks a lot

Ahh I knew I forgot something. Simple fix, I'll get the new one up either tonight or tomorrow. For now you can probably consider it a good thing you don't have to reflash recovery if you're trying to keep data. :good:

after the step 3 do i have to do this
Step 4 - Restoring VRUAMDK Stock Kernel
Quote:
Boot phone into ODIN mode (See here for how-to)
Flash the VRUAMDK Stock Kernel using ODIN v3.07 ***in PDA section only*** (See here for guide on flashing)
Boot back to Android and verifying everything is still working and kernel has flashed successfully
After your phone boots back to Android, you should now be fully rooted and on the fully original stock firmware as the device came

Please kindly do not quote the entire post. Also I believe you're referring to my root thread in which case yes you should, but please keep posts related in that thread instead.

Steps 3 and 4 in this thread are optional only if you're trying to restore root and custom recovery again and you had it before or just want it for the first time. If you don't know, may want to read up on it in the thread. Probably don't need it for now.
I dont have to do it now,my problem was with a custom rom, after install the custom rom the phone reboot with the padlock,i was trying to get rid of the pad lock reinstallig the goomanager and no luck, what i did was restore my nandrood backup and the padlock gone.
Most of the people on xda getting error while flashing new update on YU yureka.
so i have created this thread to solve there's problems :highfive:
you just have to follow some steps.
1.you should be on stock recovery.
if you do not have stock recovery then here is LINK
************************************************************
2. now you need big data pack you have to download whole updated stock rom which is approx 643.767 MB
here is LINK.
3. now put this in internal storege(not in any folder or ext_sd card)
4. go to recovery and apply update. and choose this zip file and flash it :good:
and now very important step. Hit thanks button

'cos it's the "whole updated stock rom", i.e., stock rom + the latest update rolled into one convenient easy-to-use package. read the op.
i was reading stock kernel was needed
i know kernel is usually in the full build
so
1. do we need the stock kernel?
2. Will TA backup work?
3. do we need to clear cache and data?
4. Will the existing 3rd party kernel and recoveries work after the update?
As far as I know from my limited flashing experience, the custom kernel will get overwritten by those present in the ROM being flashed.

LOL i tried falshing stock kernel with flashify both time i didnt get wifi signal(MAC UNKNOWN) xD Am not switching over to new update anytime soon....
Flashed this full ROM. Successful !! :highfive:
But I lost Root access and the stock recovery.
I am trying to flash it in fastboot mode, but its stuck at this message:
target reported max download size of 268435456 bytes
sending 'recovery' (8394 KB)...
Without stock recovery, I can't flash the Root.zip file to get root access.

I meant, I lost the stock recovery as well. SO I was trying to flash the stock recovery image file in fastboot mode as usual. But it gives me error as I mentioned earlier. My phone is connected to PC while I try to flash the recovery image file. I suspected the drivers got erased, but thats not the case.
Only when I install stock recovery, the Root.zip file can be flashed using it ( to root the phone again). Because flashing the zip files from new Cyanogen Recovery is not at all working. Some R/W or backmap/bitmap kind of issue comes when I try to flash using the updated recovery.

I am sorry, I put it in wrong terms.
The CWM recovery (having basic look with text in blue that can be opted only using hardware buttons and not touch) is not shown for me now. The Cyanogen Recovery it shows me now looks new (with Apply Update option that can be opted by touch as well). THis new recovery fails whenever I try to flash any zip with it. The error being R/W error or something.
With the old recovery (CWM recovery) I could/did flash the Root.zip. After flashing this full ROM (having the patch), the old recovery is lost. It shows only the new recovery. And with it the Root.zip can not be flashed as it fails, as I mentioned earlier.
May be I will get you screenshots of the new Cyanogen recovery to explain what I mean.
