Usb/charging port fried after failed S-off attempt - HTC Rezound

Just throwing it out there. As the title states. I attempted the S-off, failed a couple of times, more than likely due to my timing on the wire trick. Then my computer was unable to find device anymore. Long story short, I got my rom to reboot, however the phone will not connect to computer or charge. Tried Pc, Mac, different usb cords. Wiped, reinstalled rom, pulled battery, etc..
This is a risk that I took, and I take full responsibility for that. But just beware that this could affect your hardware and not just your software too, which makes sense because you are messing with the hardware. I am def in the minority here, but I thought I would share. But something to think about. The phone now still functions but I have to take out the battery to charge, and I can't push any files to the phone.

ive never heard of anyone's usb port getting fried with the s-off method but i guess it's possible since your basically grounding your device out.

I know it won't help you with fastboot, but you can still do ADB over wireless. Look for instructions on how to enable it via terminal, or just go the the store and find a widget or app to enable it. At least with functional ADB, you can still push files to your phone using wifi tether or if they are on the same wireless network.

Someone else had the same issue and is testing a possible fix for me. If it works ill post a thread but there is a good chance it is dead.

I had the exact same thing happen to me on my original Rezound, while I was doing all sorts of fastboot stuff to completely wipe it and prepare it to be shipped back to Verizon. In the end, it shipped back to them in a state where it would ONLY boot to hboot, because it had no /boot or /system or /data or /recovery partitions or anything. I don't really know what happened, but before I could run the RUU to complete the job, the USB connection just stopped working and it wouldn't charge. Exactly the same situation, except it was on its way back to Verizon anyway with a dead screen so I didn't bother to investigate any further.

To the people who have had the problem, were you using an uninsulated wire?

Or else inadvertantly touched the wrong terminals ? Just trying to figure out how it could happen.

lack of usb function was a product of a corrupted misc image on the HTC Desire. It is possible the same thing happened here so that is being tested. It is worth looking into as a last resort before sending it back.

Yes I was using an insulated wire. I placed the wire exactly where the pictures show. I'm really not sure what happened. But at least I have a backup phone.

Sounds like he is in the exact same boat as me. Will be following that thread as well.. Thanks.

Me three
In same Boat.
Please post a cure if you find one.

Another nice option for transferring files is SSHDroidPro used with something like WinSCP.
I know you tried wiping your rom, but did you try an RUU? On the off chance it is a corrupted partition that might be able to fix it. Worth a try anyway.

[Q] RSDLite AP Fastboot

For some reason, when I go to flash a file in RSDLite 5.6, everything works until the program puts it into AP Fastboot. The program isn't able to recognize my phone and ends up displaying "The phone failed to switch to fastboot mode."
Any ideas?
Thanks!

I am having the same exact problem!! i was about to post a new thread when i found this.... hope someone can chime in and give us a heads up.
my problem is that i can only get windows to recognize my razr in bp flash SBF mode. it will not recognize my razr while in AP fastboot mode. no matter how many times i've tried. i have successfully flashed an sbf before.
since then i have removed and re downloaded the drivers just to be sure that i have the correct ones. thought it might be a usb cable so i switched it out along with multiple ports on the comp. i have no idea.
don't know if this helps but the only bootstrap i could use prior to bootlooping was razrbootstrap. cwmonboot would not work no matter what (which i had working once also) and i came from arctic rom where i also lost usb mode while booted. no options at all to connect to pc. thought that might have something to do with it.
i really hope this helps someone to point us in the right direction. if i don't find anything out tonight i am going to take it to verizon. thank you guys for all that you do!!

What a lengthy post haha. I think the problem may be that I was using my 64x laptop. Switched to my moms 32 and its made it much farther so far. *fingers crossed

It was just about done, and I guess the battery got too low.....I'm screwed. It says it cant transfer because the battery is too low. Now im stuck in ap fastboot...
figured out my problem..... it wouldnt recognize my razr while in AP fastboot mode all because of me using a different cable. make sure you use the cable that came with the phone!! I thought i had the new cable but i was using an old one.
what a relief!! so that was my problem. if anyone experiences the same thing you know what to look for.
thanks XDA for somewhere to go to when i have a problem like this tho lol.
also have you tried to boot into AP fastboot then just hit the power button once. should just turn off the phone so that you can charge it on the wall charger for a while.

I went through a situation of FCs with my first Razr that VZW nor Moto could diagnose, and local Verizon replaced it with no questions asked. But I'd only had it for 9 days. Was told VZW replacement period was 14 days; but I never confirmed it.
I was able to unroot/factory reset though before taking it in. Your's might be questionable unless you have a good relationship with the VZW dealer.
IMO, if your way past any warranty period, I'd hold out for a factory cable or get someone experienced to build you one via the post above.
Good luck!

Make sure you close all terminal windows and reset the computer. I was having this problem too and simply restarting the computer and phone seemed to solve their inability to talk to each other.
Also, I was having the same problem of it hanging on "waiting for device" before I even got to do the wire trick. Oddly enough, it seemed to be related to the kernel I was using (SebastianFMs OC based off the latest ICS kernel). As soon as I tried using an earlier ICS kernel before I tried again, all the sudden it was detecting my phone correctly and would go on to the wire trick part immediately.

Real quick, when you say it won't charge. Do you mean if you plug it into a wall it won't charge, even when turned off?
Pull out the battery entirely, connect the phone to the computer, and turn on the phone. You should be able to get to HBOOT via USB power. Does this work?

It's going to be ok, just take a deep breath and calm down. If you're stressed out, take a break and put your feet up. Panic and stress are the only thing that will brick a rezound. Anything else can be fixed, besides of course hardware failure, and that's not your issue.

Honestly I'm concerned that your phone doesn't see power or respond to USB at all anymore. Is it possible that you've broken the little tab inside the port on your phone, or is it possible that some piece of debris is shorting out the contacts in there?
you say its still possible to get to HBOOT, which means if you can remove your SDCARD and put a PH98IMG.zip file on it with the correct boot.img you can get it booting again - but I'm concerned that the USB port is damaged and therefore the phone may be useless once the battery is depleted.

Technically you can, it's just a huge pain in the ass, I've done it before. You have to pull the battery out at like a 45 degree angle but make sure there's enough pressure on it so it still makes contact, then slide out the sdcard with your fingernail and get the sdcard. Place the battery back in, get a card reader and put it on there, then reverse the process.

I just looked at usb port, and it's perfect, i blew some compressed air so it's clean.
And yeah i can get into hboot, but im having a problem flashing a PH98IMG.zip, it keeps saying "Parsing" when it finds the file, and it doesn't flash the boot.img
And I'm not worried about the battery depleting, I have a Thunder Bolt to charge the battery. But the fact that my pc won't detect my phone is worrying me.

Yeah it sounds like something is definitely wrong with the phone... has me wondering if the USB issue and the hanging on "parsing" are related by a common malfunction or failure of the device.
Either that, or the PH98IMG.zip file you have on there is bad? I suppose that is entirely possible too... Or if somehow the installed kernel became corrupt, I could see the phone behaving the way it is.
I would try re-downloading another kernel as a PH98IMG.zip file, putting it on the SDCARD and trying all over again with a completely new download. Don't use the one you've been using, just to eliminate a bad PH98IMG.zip as the possible culprit.

If it has a broken usb/charging port, hell yes I'd definitely try for an exchange first on the basis that a critical part failed. If they give you grief over the damaged screen then definitely do an insurance claim on it, assuming you got insurance on it..

My ReZound and it's constant problems

This phone has gotten me wanting to quit technology altogether. I have had so many problems with mine, I can't even explain how irritated I am and how good an iPhone sounds to me. Phone rejects all usb connections, can't stay on for more than half an hour (If I can get it to boot fully) I don't even know what to do anymore. I know I could probably get it RUU'd, only thing is that I can't lock its bootloader anymore. And also broke my root. Superuser and su are still there, but superuser can't gain root access, neither can anything else. Tried factory resetting and reflashing my rom, but that didn't work for more than 10 minutes. Honestly if I could, I would torch this phone and leave it in a ditch, unless someone has a way for me to RUU without needing to lock the bootloader, because I'm pretty sure that's the only way I can do it.
I'm on CleanRom 4.[one version before the newest]

Wow...I've had no real problems with mine at all, except for some weirdness with recovery and Boot Manager yesterday. But I finally managed to clear those up. This has been a great phone for me. I don't intend to assume user error, but it's always a possibility...but don't give up and go to the iCrap...Android is still WAY better. Hopefully someone in the community can get ya straightened out.

The only reason why there's any problems is because none of my cables connect to my phone anymore. My stock one broke and so now I'm using the standard usb cables that every other phone has. usb connection has never worked since the switch. I don't blame you for blaming me, but the truth is I really don't think this is my fault. I have almost bricked my phone due to a batched RUU Flash, but it still worked fine after I got it out of the loop. And this all started happening recently. I dunno what to think.

To run the exe, yes. But if you S-Off, it won't matter. It may be worth it.
FWIW, I know the 4G issue that occurs after flashing a radio is resolved by running the RUU then doing an hboot factory reset...maybe give that a shot?

Can't S-OFF if I can't connect my phone to my computer.
The vzw corporate just agreed with me that the battery life is ****ty and sent me a gnex which ill be happy with since the battery is better and it has miui roms which I like
what i would reccomend doing is flashing the latest ruu.
to do this take out your microSD and put it in a sd card adapter and put the ruu onto the sd card and then run it, and then do an hboot factory reset

I would definitly say you should warranty replace it. Dont know why you cant use a data cable to connect to pc, I use em all the time, sounds like a hardware issue with that. Unless you can data connect while in Recovery or in Hboot I would say just replace with warranty.

[Q] Likely hood of an S-OFF method without the wire trick?

What's the likely hood that there will be a method for getting S-OFF without doing the wire trick in the somewhat near future? I really want to S-OFF but sticking wires into the back of my phone seems a little sketchy. I know that it would be hard to screw it up but still. Is it worth just biting the bullet and doing the wire trick or should I tough it out until there's another method?

I really want to S-OFF but sticking wires into the back of my phone seems a little sketchy. I know that it would be hard to screw it up but still. Is it worth just biting the bullet and doing the wire trick or should I tough it out until there's another method?

Just do it, it takes like 10min
It's doesn't hurt anything to do it, I've done it to 3 phones now with no Ill effects besides a sd card that needed to be reformatted
Now it can be tricky and a pain in the ass to do if you don't do it right but if you do get into a snag you could pm charliestheman or me and we will help you through it

I finally s-off'd yesterday and I'm kinda disappointed I didn't do it earlier!!
It sounds way more intimidating than it really is. And honestly I'm not sure if a lot of people just can't read or what but as long as you follow the directions you'll be A-O.K.

Alright I think I'll try it tomorrow, hopefully my parents leave because if they see me shoving a wire in the back of my phone they'll flip XD. And before anyone asks yes I live at home but that's only because I'm 16 and no I promise I'm not the stereotypical douche teenager. I am really ashamed of my generation, I go to school with some of the biggest idiots I've ever know. I know this isn't really XDA related but I always feel like I have to defend myself whenever I mention I'm in highschool.

Seriously, you'll be fine. Follow JBear's instructions to the "T",
do it in a well-lit place with no distractions, and touch ONLY the metal
contacts indicated. Takes 10 minutes....

i know what you mean. im 15 and most people assume i know nothing about this stuff which is totally wrong.
Anyway the wire trick is pretty easy it just takes a few tries and its definitely worth it if you like to switch between GB and ICS nandroids like me
Before you start. I suggest doing a nandroid, transferring it to your PC, and make sure fastboot/adb works properly.
it's nothing you don't even have to unscrew anything.

This is probably a dumb question. I'm itching to s off too, but a little scared. How do I make sure fastboot and adb works?

Just try adb devices and see if it spits out a serial number.

recovery from failed s-off attempt
prior to attempting, I did a full nandroid backup with amonra recovery.
switched cards and ran the setup, it looked like all was working
but wire trick didn't for me. going to try again, with stiffer wire.
after battery pull, I rebooted to hboot fastboot and restored
the amon ra recovery with fastboot. I can reboot to amon ra now.
I tried normal boot and that failed to run. I thought the controlbear was
putting part software was part of itself in recovery, should it have written
on the real OS partitions?
hboot says unlocked, s-on, hboot-2.10.000
restore of the amon ra leaves me with juopunutbear in green in center of
screen on normal boot.
how do I recover?
the card contains boot.img, cache.img, data.img, recovery.img, system.img
do I need to fastboot flash parts of it? I'm unsure what it did?

After re-flashing Amon RA, use con's Nandroid helper or pull boot.img and "fastboot flash boot boot.mg" in hboot, in conjunction with a restore without the helper zip.
EDIT:
Once you gain s-off with the utility you won't need to do the above steps, as you will then be able to restore your boot.img without the assistance of either.
[Solved] Thanks... where can find the utility?
nandroid helper
So I need to boot to hboot / fastboot
then fastboot flash boot boot.img,
then restore the rest with amon ra?
Or were they already restored and just boot.img
needs manual loading?
next time I'll know to fastboot flash the boot.img
I guess that's due to s-on recovery can't restore
itself and boot?
==> resolved. Everything is back up from the backup.

Already there. You can't restore a boot.img in recovery "natively" with s-on.
I was wondering about doing a backup, maybe somebody can point me in the right direction. I am on the ICS leak from a month or so ago. Everything works, so I don't even know why I'm thinking about this, but anyway, I'd like to do s-off because I love flashing different roms. My problem is I have a few apps that I use a lot, but they generate their own ID so to speak. They don't use a login and if I lose the data I already have, all my contacts on the apps are toast. I assume that the data for those apps must reside in the phone somewhere, but, I have no idea where, and I really would be hating life if I lost it.
/rant
App makers, please let us use email/password to effing identify ourselves instead of some randomly generated crap!
/end rant
So I guess the utility
makes the boot.img into an PH98IMG.zip for hboot to process?
Something like the ROM kernel modules are done?

HTC Amaze won't turn on or charge

My Amaze was connected via USB to my Ubuntu laptop and I was testing a game I was working on. Suddenly, my computer could not recognize my device and, my device and charging light was off (the battery was at ~94%). I have 3 batteries, and none of them work when trying to power on the device. My device was S-OFF, SuperCID, rooted, and running Android Revolution ROM HD. I was using a Samsung cable if that makes a difference. I tried booting with Power+Vol. Down but that did not work. I figure it is a hardware problem, but it seems odd that it would do this all of a sudden. Can anybody confirm what is wrong with it, and maybe a possible fix? Thanks!
Edit: I get the QHUSB_DLOAD driver message.
Anyone? Please help!
Sorry, your phone is almost bricked. Flash chip bug makes large chunks of the entire flash unreadable. It's more likely to happen if you issue a trim command or format a partition in the wrong way. (Well, it's the right way for flash, but our chip can get borked.) Mine just happened when I was copying a bunch of data over.
You corrupted something fairly early in the boot process but not the earliest thing. Search for fixes for the qhusb and you'll find a couple things. They didn't work for me, but might for you. Even if you fix it, it might re-brick itself after a bit of usage.

Thank you for your response! You logic seems to be correct as I wasn't messing with any critical files. Please update your post if you find a solution!
Did you find the post(s) I was talking about? They may work for you. It basically involves trying to rewrite the bootloader.
I ended up punting and trying to desolder the MMC chip so I could try to get my data off it. Unfortunately, it's epoxied on so it got very damaged even though I was using a pretty good hot-air reflow station, so I haven't tried soldering it to a SD-card reader.

I have tried that numerous times to rewrite the bootloader, but to no avail. Can you post a picture, and do you think a JTAG would work?

Picture of the board? I think I have it around somewhere. If I can find it, sure.
In theory it should work, but I don't think anyone has publicly mapped out the pins for it and I didn't feel like trying to figure out the software side of things to connect it to the generic JTAG adapters I have access to. It's possible that one of the phone-centric JTAG makers has an adapter board, but I'm not willing to spend $bank on a phone worth barely anything.
