This ftf file that you used, included only kernel and baseband, that's why you didn't notice any difference. You need a full firmware, you can find .42 firmware from my tutorial, link in the signature.

actually if he only flashes kernel, he should be able to root right,?
since the kernel was changed by sony and root was not acquirable(i had read somewhere)

Yes i checked unknown sources... Maybe i need to unlock the bootloader first. Is there an easy way to unlock bootloader? Because i read it and i didn't understand well
I also noticed that when i click help>check drivers in flashtool, it gives this:
28/042/2012 10:42:14 - INFO - List of ADB devices :
28/042/2012 10:42:14 - INFO - - none
28/042/2012 10:42:14 - INFO - List of fastboot devices :
28/042/2012 10:42:14 - INFO - - none
Is it a problem? I have android sdk tools and google driver package installed.

Yes I did! But Flashloader doesn't work! I dont know why... I do all but the last thing flashloader says is only "28/005/2012 14:05:45 - INFO - Selected ST15i_4.0.2.A.0.62_Kernel+Baseband.ftf"
and after nothing happens

Did you install the flashtool drivers in flashtool/drivers?
Do you have SE PC companion?
Here's a guide on how to install ADB drivers:
http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/06/how-to-set-up-adb-usb-drivers-for-android-devices/
It's obvious really, but when you click flashmode in flashtool and the firmware selection windoew comes up, don't change anything.
adsp.sin has to be selected under firmware content. I say this because I've seen some people change that. The result would be obvious

yes it is more than 200 mb. I tried to unlock my bootloader today, But i didn't get any message in that procedure. How can i check if i succesfully unlocked or not?

I will say it again.
You need to use a proper ftf file to flash the whole firmware.
Install it exactly the same way as earlier.
Bootloader doesn't have to be unlocked for this.

I think i have a problem with my computer or that flash tool software...
This is what i do:
I click flash icon

"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
I select flashmode
I select full ftf file. But at the right side there is nothing... I click ok
And this is the only result which i get everytime. After i connect my device in flash mode, still nothing is happening...

Seems like downloading issue to me. Tried redownloading?

Yes probably, i am downloading again. Or i will try on another computer, thanks to all for your replies =)

Finally I found the reason. I changed Windows' language and region options to English and USA, and problem is solved. This is why flashtool didn't work on my pc.

not got my xperia s yet but how do I make a backup of my firmware?
Open SEUS or PCC and then click "repair" firmware. It will reflash your device and download some files called "FILEXXXXXXXX" where the XXXXXXX is a number.
This files are in the folder /db/blobs/yyyyyyyy/ where yyyyyy is a number too.
Copy out the FILE_XXXXXX files to a backup folder. Now go into flashtool -> Advanced -> Decrypt .... Put into the files from your backup and Flashtool will create you a flashable version of your Rom

Strictly speaking you don't need every file in that folder. Sort it into size order, then pick the two biggest files - they should be the ones at the top. One about 160MB and one about 15MB or something. Those are the only two you need to build your bundle.
Will this work if I already re-locked my bootloader? Or do I then have to wait for OTA?
How can i make .ftf files?
i don't have loader.sin after decrypt.
I've downloaded the files from PCC and moved the 3 File XXX files to a new directory but as said above after making a tft i cant flash it because there isnt a loader.sin is it possible you attach the one you are using so that we can use that one?

Once you did all the steps look in the folder \Flashtool\firmwares there will be your firmware you created (FTF File) from the files with loader.sin.
Worked for me look at the attached screenshot.
Correct me if i am wrong, this is my first Sony phone i flash, allways had Motorola.
allready found what's the cause, when you create a bundle you need to choose a device but the xperia s aint on the list, so i choose cancel,, it creates a bundle but without loader.sin, when i chose the arc s it adds loader.sin to the bundle

Yeah thats also a very very important step. I was searching for that for a long time also the first time ;-) You also have to select that when connecting your device to the flashtool for the first time. (not in flashmode and enable USB debugging) then also select Xperia Arc S.
Yeah, altho wont be long before flashtool will be updated with the s included but at least i found out perhaps others can learn from my quest
i have pushed the correct loader to FlashTool repo...
it will be included in next release...
if u want to download it u can find it here:

I'm sure it has something to do with the partition_image.sin, but the UK version posted here doesnt have it. I've checked the tft's posted here and none contain the partition-image, so i removed it from the tft i've made and flashed it and so far no problems, it reboots fine and i need to choose the settings again so it seems fine, ill post it tonight for ppl in holland (after some testing)

I turned debugging on but it gives the same error but the file aint necessary so far i know i've tried the tft file and it works fine without. went from branded, to uk and back to branded no problems!
remove the partition-image from the ftf . it is not flashed well by flashtool at the moment, but it is completely not needed to flash!

Indeed,
i´ll make a post with the link in it for dutch users as a backup or make a thread where we make a list of those files, i can host them that´s not really a problem

When flashing did you get any errors? And if it wont turn on start with holding volume up and power for 10 seconds thats the same effect as a battery pull

[How-To] Rooting guide for 2011 xperia devices

This is a tutorial on how to root 2011er xperia devices. This method is for locked bootloader with stock sony kernel.
I know there are several threads on this topic, but many people asked me so - here we go:
Rooting your device will void your warranty! Your are doing all the following steps on your own risk!
First look here:
1. Your firmware is 4.0.2.A.0.42 or 4.0.2.A.0.58
2. Your firmware is 4.0.2.A.0.62 or 4.0.2.A.0.69
3. Your firmware is 4.1.B.0.431
4. Your firmware is 4.1.B.0.587
5. Unlocked Bootloader
6. The new ultimative rooting script for all firmware versions
7. Other methods (stable and experimental)
1. For 4.0.2.A.0.42 or 4.0.2.A.0.58 firmware:
a) Flashtool method
This is a very easy method to root your phone. For this method you download flashtool from here and install it.
When it is installed, you launch it.
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",

"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
On your phone you go to Settings -> Applications -> and enable unknown sources.
After that, you go to Settings -> Applications -> Development -> and enable usb debugging.
Finally you go to Settings ->Sony Ericsson ->Connectivity ->USB connection mode ->MSC
Now you connect your device to the pc and flashtool will automatically recognize it.
Now if your device is connected and recognized, we can begin with the rooting process:
For that we click on the open padlock here:
Now it will root your device automatically
Here's the log:

Gratulation! You have a rooted xperia 2011 device now!
b) DooMLoRD's Toolkit
This is a very easy method for rooting, too. You just go to this thread by DooMLoRD and click thanks for his great toolkit!
Then you download the toolkit and when it has finished downloading you unpack the zip and open the folder!
Before we can start we must go on the device and do the following steps:
First you go on your phone and go to Settings -> Applications -> and enable unknown sources.
After that, you go to Settings -> Applications -> Development -> and enable usb debugging.
Finally you go to Settings ->Sony Ericsson ->Connectivity ->USB connection mode ->MSC
Now you run the toolkit by clicking the runme.bat
The toolkit will start in a cmd window
Now you only have to hit any key and the rooting toolkit will automatically root the device.
Gratulation! You have a rooted xperia 2011 device now!
2. For 4.0.2.A.0.62 or 4.0.2.A.0.69
To root these two firmware versions, you'll first have to downgrade your phone to 4.0.2.A.0.42 or 4.0.2.A.0.58.
Remember: Flashing firmware may void your warranty!
Your data will be lost throug this step, so if you want to, save it using for example Android Assistant, which can backup the .apk (but the data will be lost), or you use adb backup. Remember to save your contacts and sms, too!
MAKE SURE PC COMPANION OR SONY UPDATE SERVICE ISN'T RUNNING IN BACKGROUND WHILE YOU ARE FLASHING!!! DON'T USE THIS METHOD IF YOUR BOOTLOADER IS UNLOCKED, OTHERWISE YOUR DEVICE WILL BRICK!! (Unlocked bootloaders can't do updates over the air, but flashing won't destroy your phone on unlocked bootloader!)
First you have to flash the 4.0.2.A.0.42. To do so you download and install flashtool from here.
You can download the firmware from this thread by benji.berg or here by someguyfromhell.
Thanks for sharing the firmware with us!
Download the 4.0.2.A.0.42 for your device!
After the installation of Flashtool you open the windows explorer and go to the downloaded file. If it is a 7z or zip archive you unpack it to get a .ftf file.
Now you open the flashtool installation folder. There you go to the drivers folder and install the drivers.
In the flashtool -> drivers folder is the drivers installer
Now we go to the downloaded .ftf file and copy it to the firmware folder of Flashtool
Programs -> Flashtool -> Firmwares:
Next we launch flashtool
Now, to flash a new firmware, we click on the flash
In the Mode Selector you choose Flashmode and click ok
In the next step you choose the firmware and you mark wipe data and wipe cache. Just mark it like you see it in the picture. If you are sure all is marked right, you click ok
Now you have to turn off your device. Make sure the battery is more than 75%. You press and hold the volume down key and while pressing volume down you connect your device to pc. The green led will light up and Flashtool will automatically flash the new firmware.
DON'T DISCONNECT THE DEVICE FROM YOUR PC DURING THE FLASHING PROCESS!!
Here's the flashing log:

20/022/2012 11:22:20 - INFO - For flashtool, Unknown Sources and Debugging must be checked in phone settings
Check your log first before you restart the phone. If there are no errors, go on.
You have to restart your phone then. When it has started go through the setup assistant.
You are on 4.0.2.A.0.42 or 4.0.2.A.0.58 firmware now, so you go to
1. For 4.0.2.A.0.42 or 4.0.2.A.0.58 firmware and root your device like it is explained there.
When your device is rooted, you connect your xperia via wifi to the internet. Now you start the update center (on your phone) and search for updates. It will find the update to 4.0.2.A.0.62 which you install over the air (ota=via wlan, not connect to pc) then.
Now you click on download and install it.
After a reboot you have a rooted 4.0.2.A.0.62 firmware!
The rooting methods/toolkits/firmwares/etc were NOT my work, I've just collected different tutorials on rooting the xperia devices like xperia mini/mini pro/active/ray/lww/etc in one big rooting guide!
3. For 4.1.B.0.431
Just look in this very nice tutorial to root the ics firmware of the devices.
4. For 4.1.B.0.587
To root this firmware version please go here. This tutorial by alokbina should help you!
5. Unlocked bootloader
If you have an unlocked bootloader, you can just flash a custom kernel (boot.img), that is prerooted. Check out development forum, for all the kernels!
6. The new ultimative rooting script for all firmware versions!
Here you can find the best way to root your phone on every software version (gingerbread and ice cream sandwich). Just download the script and run it. Then your phone should be rooted! Good luck and a big thanks to Nabeel.
7. Other methods (stable and experimental)
Cyida impactor
honestly, I don't think we need one more tutorial, there are already several of'em. why repeating the stuff said by somebody else?

Cause there are so many people asking "how to root st15i" and then there comes out, that they are on .62 firmware which is unrootable. Or they telling a root problem, but they are on .69 firmware or ics! I wanna make a rooting guide with all firmwares included, so also newbies can just look for their firmware and root it!
yeah yeah, great, but when someone asks, one can just post him the link to the pinned topic visible on the very top of the section: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1568792

I know the very great thread by someguyfromhell but there's only 1 method and if that doesn't work there's the flashtool method and doomlords method and there are many different for the different firmwares
Great tutorial! A bit off topic, can you also make a tutorial on how to unlock bootloader? That's my problem as of now
The easiest and most effective way Thanks!
For unlocking Bootloader? Maybe, but the Problem is my bl is unlocked yet so I have to relock and unlock again
For unlocking look http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/ here.
It's a great guide, if you don't understand anything, just ask in the Forum

It will void warranty like rooting, but normally sony can't notice that you flashed something. It's the official firmware, so sony won't get it. And if you update then to .62 ota they shouldn't notice, but can't promise!
The problem is, that this is not the same firmware for your country, it's generic world. Maybe read here.
Please see this! You are able to root 4.0.4 version. http://talk.sonymobile.com/thread/35239

Sure, but you have to downgrade to gingerbread first and run local-prop and after update with wipe data unmarked run push-root-files.
Or you have to flash neo kernel and root, etc...

If I were you I would root. You can use root apps, like Titanium backup to backup apps + data and uninstall crap like facebook
Or LBE Privacy Guard can change permissions of apps like turn off gps or wifi for special apps!
While flashing your si number will be changed, so your region. For example ics update was rolled out from si numbers. While flashing our si number will be changed, but that's normally no problem. But I'm not sure, if sony could notice if it's not the original si anymore

Cause I have found a firmware for my region. A forum provided me a Philippine firmware in which the country I reside on
I don't Know exactly, maybe ask Google
But I think so just take that Firmware and root your phone...

Hello,
I tried rooting my phone with the instructions you've provided. They all goes well! But after the last step I start my phone it has all software that are included in the full Kernel... But Superuser app is missing and I cannot open any application that requires root access, they all say Device is not rooted. Any idea what could be going wrong?

Link2SD
Hello,
Does anyone here use Link2SD with their rooted xperia pro's (rooted with this guide
and with this built)? I'm asking because I have this phone and obviously followed
the above guide which worked perfectly btw but I'm getting weird problems with
Link2SD and I wondered if it might be a consequence of the kerneltrick applied here?
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Usui218
Hey, if you already had a rooted phone with another kernel version, do you have to do all the rooting procedure again, or do you simply flash the new kernel?
Thanks

[Q] [Noob] Installing stock ICS on MT15i with 4.1.B.431_Global - Locked Bootlooader

Hi XDA.
I've been searching and searching for the answer on XDA and other websites and can't quite find the answer i need.
I'm on GB 2.3.4.42 with root and CWM Recovery installed (with a few backups made on the SD Card with a locked bl)
I have checked my phone and I have a locked bootloader which cannot be unlocked (as far as i know?) And I was wondering if it is possible that flashing the stock ICS would work even if my bootloader is locked?
If I could also have a little help on how I would do this that would be fantastic.
Thank you again for taking your time to help me out. Such a noob lol.
Edit:
Added log when I try to flash:

Take care guys and thanks a lot for your help.

Try with Sony Mobile Update Serivice before (normal update), full factory restore. Why using flashtool to update?
If with flashtool:
Try again, re download firmware .587 from THIS (why previous .431 if you are flashing?)full charge, disable antivirus or firewall.
Select all wipes, no excludes, check "no final verification".
Enable usb debug on the phone and then shut it off. Connect it (when power off connect it while long pressing "back button") to the pc following flashtool points.
BTW are you really saying that you couldn't find any answer to "Can I update to ICS still I am with locked bootloader?" Maybe you didn't search too much, beacuse it is quite known by all that locked bootloader means that you can flash only original signed Sony firmware.
In fact you had not to worry about bootloader, if you didn't know anything about it and you didn't touch it :good:
So, in final, do you know what are you doing, before messing up something?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1973017 hope it helps
Just use seus..just follow the step..

Thanks for your help so far guys, I do know what I'm doing generally but when I go to flash now i've encountered another problem:
When I put debug on, put it into msc and then reboot the phone ready for flash I get this error and the whole thing aborts. This happens with Sony Companion (when I tried the .62 update) and SUS - which meant i couldn't get past the 3rd page :C
Any idea what the problem is?

Apreicate your help.
When I go to reinstall the Drivers I forgot to mention this and didn't really think anything of it, I get this error:
The phone also doesn't appear in my driver manager either =/
The error I get:
Also showing my phone connected to my pc:
I have absolutely no clue where to go from here :c
+Xperia > Connect > MSC
+Developer Options > USB Debugging on
+Security > Unknown Resources
+Install Drivers : Flashmode // ADB Neo drivers
+Make Sony PC Companion recognize your phone.After it recognizes..close it.
+If your system is 32 bit , open flashtool.exe if it is 64 bit , open flashtool64.exe .
+Sometimes windows install drivers for your phone.Wait until it finish.
+And don't forget.Don't open Flashtool - doom or other root / boot stuffs together.ADB servers will be out of date.So just open flashtool.
+If you have a antivurs, close it.
+If there is another program which can delete files automatically..you should close it too!
+Be fast when you are trying to make phone enter flashmode.Don't wait much.
+When you try to install drivers, installer will open.And it will ask you for your permission.Just accept all of them.
Don't forget wipe data / cache..and be sure that .ftf is right.
I hope you will make it
Is that Windows8??....then the best option would be to use a Win7 pc..but if u dont have one rite now..
In your device manager..goto Sony saXXXX..update ADB interface driver software..if that doesnt work then..
uninstall driver..disconnect usb..unselect USB debuggin..reselect it and plug in the usb..let windows install drivers..
Thanks so much guys for your help!
I've just changed from the USB2.0 port to a 3.0 and the S1Boot driver suddenly installed and now flashing! I'll edit this when its finished flashing!
BRB.
EDIT 1:
It's been stuck at this for 5 mins now: should I be worried?

hmm..it should say flashing finished almost instantaneously..at this point..
Did u follow the steps mentioned in my guide perfectly??? wipe data, cache, apps log before flashing??
If you look at the middle you Will see "not rootable", so probably you've done something wrong.
Why did you use S1 driver?
Anyway uninstall flashtool, then open update service and follow it to the end. This should make you connect the phone in flashmode and the driver Will be installed automatically if connected to the net.
...and you Will install ics.
Again use flashtool only if Update Service is not helping you in order to get what you want.

Sorry I couldn't reply sooner, been busy.
Anyways, I stopped the flash while it was in progress which "bricked" it. So I used SEUS to restore it and then used your instructions to reflash it again. Worked flawlessly the second time! Thank you so much everyone for your help! :good:

have you tried to flash to the stock rom ics?
if not you should try to flash to stock ics rom, then flash the kernel to install JB JB ROM. of course, make sure the first is successfully flashing the ICS ROM

I will try my best to help you.
The first is done you download ics stock rom ftf file, you can download here
The second did the flashing stock rom ftf the use, and make sure the flashing process smoothly without error.
third when you have successfully installed the stock ics rom, you can flash the kernel specifically for JB ROM. you can get here. do the flashing using fastboot via flashtool. (I suggest using the last kernel update)
fourth, after successfully flash the kernel JB of course now you have cwm installed from the kernel. JB did flash rom through cwm. You can get JB rom file here
thanks to etch04 for kenel and kontini for JB ROM XU
hopefully can help you :good: sorry for my bad english

If yes, should such an error will not appear earlier.
Maybe it helps you flash ICS kernel first. ics kernel you can download here
did flashing the kernel, then you try try again flash the ics rom.
or maybe if you want to use JB ROM, you can use the ROM of Pandemic, at this link
I have been using this ROM, pretty good.
