[Q] ARHD 2.2 --> Shutter button doesn't launch straight into camera - HTC Amaze 4G

Anyone else having this issue? After the upgrade to ICS (Android Revolution 2.2), the dedicated camera shutter button will turn the phone's screen on to the lock screen, but not launch directly into the camera.
Not sure if this is an ICS thing, or an ARHD thing...
Thanks,
Massiv.

Would love to .... this 10 post thing is a lesson in pure frustration for me since I've had a Hero, Desire, Desire HD, and an Amaze, all of them rooted and upgraded with various ROMs, as well as having beta tested Mike's ARHD 2.1 for him [nuking my internal SD in the process].... yet I still don't have 10 posts and thus am prevented from posting a list of potential issues where it matters.
Writing this helped though!!
Massiv.

i also noticed this.
the camera button for me sometimes goes to lock screen, and if i press it again or hold it long enough it would eventually get to the camera.
the positive thing that happened after ICS upgrade is that if you have a lock screen password, it goes to camera without asking for the password, whereas in GB it always asked for the password before opening camera app, making it impossible to take fast shots.
lets hope either tmobile or the devs will work on this

Please keep all question based threads in the Q&A section. Thanks.

You don't have to be a farmer to know what sh*t smells like.

I have same problem in ARHD 3.0 - it works on Energy rom, but that rom is unstable (for me) ...
So - how do we get camera button to launch camera app when phone is locked? I really need this feature to work - please help if you know solution.
Thanks

same problem here as well

I made a quick fix. You'll need to mount your system directory as writable first, then browse to /system/usr/keylayout folder.
Then open Generic.kl file with a text editor and scroll down to key 212 (or the one that says CAMERA) and tab it (or space it) a couple of times and then add "WAKE" without quotes.
Like this:
Code:
# key 211 "KEY_HP"
[COLOR="Red"]key 212 CAMERA WAKE[/COLOR]
key 213 MUSIC
Save the file
After that, open ruby-keypad.kl file and scroll down to key 211 (or FOCUS) and tab it (or space it) a couple of times and then add "WAKE_DROPPED" without quotes.
Like this:
Code:
# CAMERA
[COLOR="red"]key 211 FOCUS WAKE_DROPPED[/COLOR]
key 212 CAMERA WAKE
Save the file again
When you're done, reboot the phone and test it out.
Note: This will make your shutter button launch straight into camera, but it makes it more sensitive. Half of a press of the shutter button will wake it up. So if you have a case or something that frequently presses the shutter button, it's recommended that you do not do this. If you don't like the changes, just undo the instructions.

Camera Volume Up Mod

Ive been searching for this for a while, i would like to be able to use the volume up button for my shutter in the default camera app. I saw some threads about this but either it wasnt compatible with my phone or it didn't work. Does anyone know of a mod that will do this for the AT&T S2? Thanks
To my knowledge they are working on it for our phone; however, this is a question and should be placed in the Q&A section in the future.

It's easy, but I'm not sure if I like it. I like using the volume buttons to zoom in and out. I was able to make long pressing the power button take pictures, but it also pops up the extended power menu lol. Hopefully I can figure out how to get a short power button press to take pictures instead of turning off the screen. It's a lot trickier on this phone than it was on the original galaxy s and infuse.

I've been using the volume up mod that I found from the i9100 forums for about a week. Used it quite a bit on my visit to Alcatraz over the weekend. It has tap to take direct picture or hold to focus and release to take a picture. The digital zoom is useless to me as all it does is just blow up a cropped imaged anyways. I'll attach it in case anyone wants to try (and as always, back up the old Camera.apk). Just push/copy to system/app

Yeah, was more worried about zooming with the volume buttons while recording 720p video. It would be a pain to record everything in 1080 and then run it through video editing software to do the zooming.
Guess I could do the volume button hack for photos only and leave it as zoom control for video recording.

I didn't think about the video recording part. BUT! I just gave it whirl and surprisingly enough, the volume keys don't start the recording and still function as zoom buttons. So it looks like the video recording part is untouched.

Same thing was happening to me but I fixed it! In root explorer go to system/app/camera.odex and rename the camera.odex to camera.odex.Bak
then reboot and it should be GTG!!!
Forgot: May have to reinstall the modded camera.apk after too as well.

I've got the zip file downloaded but haven't pulled the trigger on it yet. Stock is running real well for me and really haven't seen a feature that is a must have in a custom rom yet. Shoot, with Entropy's DD and stock rom, my phone is still blazing. Just to test things out, I've gotten a 5034 on quadrant so things are working awesome.
If this were my X10, I would be a flash whore because that thing needs optimization just like a crack head needs his next hit.

No. see the dates on this thread? ICS was a dream back then.
Some ICS builds have options for power button shutter/vol zoom.

Screencapture?

Hi I noticed that some galaxy devices have the ability to screen capture just by pressing buttons. I was wondering if you could do this with the US 5.0 version? The stock rom comes with a screen capture program with it but I still find no way to do it. does anyone know how?
I know the US 5.0 version does not do it. "Screen Capture Shortcut" work fine.
That is what I use! ha but it's weird it has the system app. Why would they put it in if you cant lol? Oh well, thanks though
What system app? I don't see one on my 5.0.
I could be mistaking it or could be something else but it shows as com.sec. android.app.screencapture
On several occasions, I some how triggered the screenshot, but unfortunately I still cannot figure out what I did to take the screenshot. So the feature is probably functional.
For now, I use the screenshot app on the market.
See I knew there was a way of it was there hmm have to figure it. try all possible combinations!
I found this post in the captivate forum talking about it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1475988
The information seems to be correct. I took a look at the code and might spend some time implementing an notification area button that does screen capture.
Try screenshot ux trial... It is really good! You can crop and edit.
Just figured it out how to do it on my way home. This is how I trigger the screen capture on YP-G70 (international)
1. Press and hold home button using your left thumb.
2. Then press and hold back button using your right thumb.
3. Release both thumbs.
4. This is the hard part. Do step 1 to 3 in less than half second. It doesn't work if you do it too fast or too slow.
If it works, it will save the screenshot under the folder "ScreenCapture" in your internal SD card.
I don't blame you if you cannot reproduce it. It requires a fast finger .
It works also on the Galaxy Player 4.0, but i don't know, where it saves the pics.
Edit: The location where it saves the pics is: /sdcard/ScreenCapture
I've tried this several times with several different timings on my ROM and it does not appear to work. This could be because of the ROM, it doesn't work on U.S., or it's another key combo. If anyone gets this to work on U.S. 5.0 please let us know...
I am agree with you. I have a Samsung Galaxy S Wifi 5.0 (spain), and with quick fingers using home button and back button, you get a screencapture

Amaze wakes up when you tap camera / video camera button, how to turn off?

Hi Guys,
Title says it all. When the Amaze is asleep and I tap either camera button, the phone will wake up to the lock screen, which is really annoying because the case I have makes it very easy to accidentally tap the camera/video camera buttons. Is there anyway to disable this functionality so the phone will only wake up when the power button is pressed?
I still want to maintain the long-perss to camera functinoality of the buttons, of course.
Thanks everyone!

There is no way to change it if you are not rooted. If you have rooted your phone or have any custom rom use Root Explorer to do the following:
Go to system/usr/keylayout folder
Mount it as R/W
Open ruby-keypad.kl file in text editor.
Change the following 2 lines and delete the WAKE.
Code:
key 248 CAMCORDER WAKE
key 212 CAMERA WAKE
Save the file and reboot.
Awesome, thanks for the info. Cheers
Hi i have a similar, but different question - how do I make it so that long-pressing camera button, will launch Camera App, even if phone is locked with pattern / password??
I bought Amaze because of camera, and I often need to take a picture quick and unlocking the phone each time is a pain in the @SS ... especially if I need to take a pick once every minute
Thanks

Take off the lock, if they made it capable of doing that then basically anyone could steal your phone and get off with your info since there is no lock what so ever.

@ Dark Nightmare
You are wrong about disabling lock and everyone being able to steal ur info. And no - I will not disable lock - I have too much precious info on my phone.
1) this works perfectly on Energy Rom (only Energy Rom is buggy).
2) I did as instructed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28194573&postcount=8
And it works - Camera key launches Camera APP ... and if I try to get into the phone - it shows lock screen / pattern - does not unlock the phone!
^ also works on PB/SpeedRom6

Camera Button

So, I double checked, and several reviews out on the webs noted the ability to use the camera button to activate the camera (even while locked?) and start taking pictures instantly without the need to use the power button. Since unboxing and setting up my phone I have been unable to duplicate this, and I must say it was a feature I was strongly looking forward to.
Anyone attempted this and have success? Is there an option somewhere to enable the ability to do this?
Thanks in advance! Happy unboxing day!

From what I read, you have to unlock it first. D:
If you have the camera on the shortcuts bar then sliding that to the unlock circle will bring up the camera. To access the gallery or home screen it will require you to unlock(face, pattern, pin, ect..)
backedc4 is right, if you have it on the lock screen shortcuts, just slide it open directly. anything else will require an unlock first.
from whatever you are doing with it once unlocked though, just long-press the camera button (all the way down) and it'll bring up the camera.
---
i thought it would be a gimmicky thing, but that long camera-button press rapid-shot photo capture is freaking awesome. i dont know how i ever took decent pictures before!!
Yeah, I knew about that, but I am sad to find out that the claims reviewed online are not holding true. Namely "For starters, that dedicated button lets you access the camera functionality with the phone switched off." (http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/04/htc-evo-4g-lte-preview-video/)
However, upon further research Cnet had the issue as well (http://reviews.cnet.com/smartphones/htc-evo-4g-lte/4505-6452_7-35182267.html) so it would appear moot. Blah! This is most certainly a feature I would like to show up in rooted versions tho, hah
Are we talking screen or security lock here? I'd say if you have a security lock you would not want to be able to bypass it for the camera. Once in the camera all of the photos you have taken are visible. As for screen lock I agree you should be able to bypass it.
hey, it does that if you take off locking
I remember tech blogs complaining about the amount of time they had to hold down the button to activate the camera, but I like it. I find myself accidentally pressing it a bit whenever I try to stretch my right hand up the screen. If it activated on every little press, that'd be really annoying. I haven't gotten to open from the lockscreen though (I have a pattern unlock)... But I don't mind that at all either.

Thanks for the tip. Now I can get into the camera app from where ever I'm at by just holding down the camera button for a few seconds. I love having a dedicated camera button.
I saw it in the reviews, too. Also I saw another thread where it's mentioned. Have you guys tried (while screen off/locked) just holding the button down for about 5sec?

Yeah, no go sadly. It's not that big of an issue to use the shortcut bar from the lockscreen, it really only adds a slight extra motion / time frame, but hey, I had to ask to see if anyone knew different!
I was able to access the camera via the dedicated button while the screen was locked for the first day or two, but at some point it has ceased to work. I have gone through every settings menu I could find to see if I made a change somewhere but have yet to find a reason. It was an awesome feature and I want it back.
I've also noticed various small things different from the first day or two, and I haven't rooted or made significant changes. I get the gut feeling this thing is getting secret silent background updates from either htc or sprint. not happy and worried about rooting because of ths...
anyone know how to check or monitor this??
Whoa the above 2 posts are pretty nuts! Completely silent updates could be quite annoying for people running rooted devices.
exactly, has me worried. I'll start another post about it later

[Q] Dedicated camera button

Two things about the Evo LTE dedicated camera button.
1. When the phone is locked should this turn the camera on after a few seconds? I cannot get mine to do it.
2. I was using the camera in the dark with Auto Flash on and the flash did not flash when using the dedicated camera button. If I use the soft button on the screen it would work.
Any thoughts on either of these two items would be appreciated.

your first point is as designed the second point is probably a software bug
I noticed this problem too, and I just got the phone yesterday. I found that if you press the camera button quickly all the way that it will flash. It just doesn't flash if you do the half press first.
My auto flash works with fast full or half to full press from hardware button. However, I cannot get the camera button to launch the camera from the lock screen. I could have sworn that I saw review vids showing this feature.

are you sure they weren't just pulling the camera shortcut into the unlock ring?
I cant say Ive heard of the camera button waking the phone. I know if you have it unlocked you can hold the button down and the camera will turn on no matter what screen you are on.
I sure hope there's some software updates coming soon, mainly to address memory management issues with Sense 4, but I would also love a more functional hardware camera button. I may just be ranting, but it honestly sucks. It's a 2-step button, but the first step doesn't do anything. I would love it to auto-focus at least, and properly control the flash would be amazing as well. The camera UI could use some tweaks also. The camera has a very powerful auto-focus, but a cross-hair type box wouldn't hurt so that we have a better idea of what exactly is being focused. Also, how about some AF metering settings? Taking a portrait of something when there's lots of light in the background will create a very dark, underexposed picture (of the primary target).
I think the camera is very powerful, and would love to see HTC make the software just as powerful... or at the very least fix the things that are broken.
