Android 4.0 messaging - HTC Amaze 4G

Just thought I'd share with you guys if anyone wants the messaging app from stock 4.0 here it is:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.concentriclivers.mms.com.android.mms
Note:
1. You need to disable the HTC messaging app or you get 2 notifications, you can simply rename it to mms.apk.bak in root explorer. Just take out bak to reinstall it if you want to go back
2. If you do disable HTC mms then sometimes picture messaging force closes the aosp mms app
Enjoy....

I was actually thinking about downloading the aosp version of all the apps and seeing which can replace the system ones.. I'd like to compile a list and links of which ones can be replaced.

You get force closes here and there and it has ads on the app.

These native ICS apps can be pushed to system/app as replacements to Sense 3.6 apps; set permissions to rw-r-r and install. Use at your own risk.
Or for you Gingerbread users, look here: ICS apps for Gingerbread

Using root explorer, do I just copy apk and move it to /system/app and change permissions to rw-r-r?
Has anyone had any issues? I tried this with browser and I don't think I did it right

I'm trying to figure out a good way of installing phone.apk, but if I uninstall the original, install the new one over it.. just get constant force closes. Trying to figure out the best way- tho I am going to try to bake it into a rom and see how that goes.
Edit: Don't bother with phone.apk - even baked into a rom it constant force closes..

Anyone having issues with the contacts apk? I have contacts.apk and contactsprovider.apk. I have no contacts icon and under accounts and sync it shows com.android.contacts. It says google is experiencing problems but has been doing this since yesterday. So, any ideas for the contacts working?

Not receiving picture texts.....

Hello all, I was hoping someone may have run into this and might could give me some feedback.
I have my phone rooted, and use Handcent for texting. I have no problems sending pictures......and up until recently, I've had no problems receiving pictures either. At first I thought it was just going to be iPhone users, but have since experienced the problem getting pics from various phones and carriers.
iPhone4 - Verizon
iPhone3 - AT&T
Samsung Eternity - AT&T
There are a few others as well. I have disabled the original messaging app, and only use Handcent. I've had no problems until the past couple of weeks. I am wondering if maybe it isn't an update issue from Handcent......I know it has manually updated a couple of times in the past few weeks.
Anyone have any suggestions?
What do you mean when you say you disabled the original app?
What ROM/kernel are you using?

Firmware 2.1update1
Kernel 2.6.29
I rooted simply to remove bloatware, I haven't changed to any of the different ROM's or anything.
I deleted MMS.apk. I wanted to try to reinstall it, to see if maybe one of the Handcent updates caused the problem somehow, after I deleted the MMS app......but I can't get it to install. I downloaded the MMS.apk on my desktop, and open it through MyFiles. I've done a few apps this way, no problem.
MMS.apk you have to push to /system/app
You cant install it like you would a normal apk.

You can install it with ESFile Explorer if you are rooted. You can find it on the market for free. You'll then need to find a mms.apk place it on your sdcard.. then using ESFile copy the apk and place it in system/apps/
Another option would be to download GeekSMS.. it runs on its on without the mms.apk. I've tried it and it worked fine for me.

Ok, I have it on my SD....and long press -----> copy, but can't figure out how to paste it into RE.
Sorry for being such a noob.
Ok, figured out how to paste in RootExplorer.
Now that I did that, I ran MMS after pasting......it still won't install. It boots like its going to install the app, then I get a message saying it didn't install. I got the same thing when I just copied the APK into MyFiles and tried installing it.
What am I missing?
You're not supposed to try and install it. You move it into the /system/app and then it should show up in your app drawer.

Replace your existing LogsProvider.apk (in system/app) with the one I attached. It disables texts from appearing in the call log (you'll have to clear your log to start fresh, but they won't appear after that). I pulled it from GTG's ROM. It'll work fine. You can either use Root Explorer, adb, or I can make you a flashable zip.

CM9 Music Player

So I'm on Turls CM9 v5 build and I d/l the CM9 music player from here. http://www.seeingpixels.org/2012/01...16.html#!/2012/01/cyanogenmod-9-music_16.html However as soon as I go to play a song it force closes.. Anyone else having this issue? Is there a way to correct?
I've searched around some other threads for other devices and haven't found a "fix"
Works for me.
Use something like root explorer:
1. Copy the apk into /system/app (make a backup of the old one just in case)
2. Set the permissions exactly the same as the old one.
3. Reboot
No Buenos following those instructions. Now force closes won't even open

clear the data of the Music app in the apps settings and it will open.

[MOD] Contacts.apk (Yellow Pages REMOVED)

Here is a modified stock AT&T Contacts.apk file without the permanent Yellow Pages contact at the top. The is for rooted users only.
Replace the Contacts.apk in /system/app using Root Explorer. Change it's permissions to RW-R--R--. Reboot!
WARNING: Do not use this for any custom ROMs, only for use on a stock AT&T ROM! Also, remember to make backups...
Funny, I never even noticed the YP thingy on the top of my contacts till now. How lame. When I clicked on it, I got a force close. I must have already frozen whatever that button links to...
Thanks, maybe that apk can be swapped out for the stock one in our custom rom(s)...

How obnoxious of them to stick that YP in the contacts ?
Thanks, I tried posting in dev but it said not enough posts . I remove the yp app and mine force closed also when clicking the contact. It's crazy how much bloat ware came on this thing. I'd like to see a stock Samsung contacts.apk to see what else they hacked up

I have it, PM me you email addy I'll mail it over to you. I would upload it but I'm at work right now.
I haven't tested this on any of the custom ROMs, only the stock AT&T ROM. I'm not sure what they did with their Contacts.apk file. If you upload the one from your ROM, I can see if I can make the same mods that I did to the AT&T one.
Didn't work for me either, and also copied it over stock apk and don't have a backup. Using TPC V2 ROM. Any one have stock Contacts.apk for that rom?

[Q] Stock ICS Keyboard on Sense 3.6?

Is it possible to install the AOSP ICS keyboard apk pulled from an AOSP rom and install it onto stock Sense 3.6 and have it fully functioning?
I have my old MyTouch 4G on an AOKP rom and I pulled LatinIME.apk from it. Now I'm just wondering whether this keyboard would function properly on my unrooted stock Amaze.
EDIT: Would I also need LatinIMEDictionaryPack.apk as well?
You can just answer that yourself, try it, if it doesn't work, then voila, question answered, right?

I get an error when opening the .apk. "There is a problem parsing the package." I've gotten this kind of error many times for different apps without understanding what it actually means.
Could someone explain to me what this error means in the context of Android apps?
EDIT: Would it also be possible to try and push the app through ADB?

That's probably because the android version is different, try pulling it from an ICS based rom, for like the sensation since that is similar to your device and give it a shot again before try to push it to the system.

What do you mean the Android version is different? I'm pulling it from an AOKP rom which is ICS based, however it may possibly be the different resolution on the 2 devices. WVGA (MyTouch 4G) vs qHD (Amaze)
I guess I'll just download CM9 for the Sensation and try again.
EDIT: LatinIME.apk from CM9 for the Sensation works like a charm!
I like the stock ICS keyboard as well, compared to sense. You can also download a ICS keyboard straight from the Play store and use it right away.
I am Chinese using Motorola thus I got thousands of chances to play with different roms modified based on the stock. Many would change the ime, but some prefer the original.
I did notice when installing a stock ime update pack from Moto, that not only the Latin.apk is changed, but some other modification will be made in the system layer as well.
I believe it is like the stock browser or Google talk app, that a single file would not work functionally without the other parts related.

Now that I know that the AOSP keyboard works on Sense 3.6 flawlessly, I want to go about putting a full fledged AOSP application onto my Amaze. I want to try putting the AOSP messaging app on, but I do not think it will be as easy as a simple keyboard.
The stock messaging app on the Amaze and the AOSP messaging app on CM9 for the Sensation have the same filename. I'm not sure if I'm right here, but would this indicate that they can't be run side by side with each other?

As I said before, give it a shot, make a backup of your current app by copying it to your sd card or something, then replace it withe AOSP version, since I've noticed that files with the same name usually can't be installed together, even if you rename the other file, but you can give that a shot as well.

The thing about the current app is that it is the stock messaging app which is located under /system which I do not have access to modify as I am not rooted. If I install the AOSP version, it would be installed under /data. I am not sure how they would them interact, assuming that they can be installed side by side.

Is there a reason to make this issue complicated? There are several free ports of the ICS keyboard available in the play store, why not simply install them in addition to the sense keyboard and use it as your primary input?
