Just thought i would share my experience... I bought my first evo on launch day june 2, rooted and unlocked it, everything was good until i bought a not OEM car charger for android phones from big lots, i tried to charge it with it and both my phone and the light on the charger went off at the same time, my evo wont turn on anymore after that, i took my evo 4g and my evo 3d and both charged fine with the same charger, I TRIED EVERYTHING from putting it in the freezer to trying all buttons combinations finally took it to sprint they couldn't turn it on either and gave me a replacement,
Got the 2nd one and did the same, Root it unlocked it and flashed custom recovery, I have a Piooner radio with USB output and i always used it with my previous phones since i threw the charger i bought away i tried to charge it with my stereo.. GUESS WHAT??? same thing happened the orange led light became brighter than usual and i shut off, I just tought here we go again..... EVO shutted off and it wouldn't come back one, took it to sprint and got another replacement, 3rd evo in two weeks, now im scared to charge it even tough I bought a OEM charger i just dont want to charge it but im on the road a lot
but i mean in a brand new piece of equipment you think that they will add a protection for over charge and stuff like that, im a big HTC fan but im really disappointed with this one.
so i guess that all im saying is .... don try to charge your evo with anything but the OEM car charger.
I'm not saying rooting and unlocking is what is causing the issue... but why don't you wait a bit on rooting and unlocking with this 3rd one and see what happens.
lol im not touching this one for nothing!! this one stays like it is, but both times the same thing happened when i tried to charge it with the car charger, doesnt make any sense

Maybe your car battery output is very erratic?
I've the charger from monoprice on the old evo and this one with no issues. It's rated at 1amp. Maybe your problem is not the charger but the cable?
i don't think so, i have to other Evos and both charge fine on my truck, i used my home charger cable too, because the charger came without cables only the plug and that's is.
im looking on ebay there is a dual usb charger htc oem for 12.99 im buying that and hope for the best
Yep I've used other chargers too and my phone is fine... Probably a bad charger that you've used.

Not to say its the charger but I had an issue with a third party car charger it caused my EVO to run super hot I was in a friends car if you do use it again try to pull the battery info as u charge ..
I'm not sure but it maybe the rooting too who knows till u pull some info I've used battery monitor to see how hot it was or the voltage it may have reached thermal point .. but I agree they should safe guard more but I learned don't use anything but the charger it came with I don't trust these things so I just avoid using them best of luck

I've been using the same Motorola car charger for my two phones now, OG and LTE, with absolutely no problem what's so ever. It came with a Bluetooth I got from Costco, Moto H12, and have used it with every phone, including friend's who had a micro USB charge port.
Just good luck I guess? I've had this charger for at least 5 years or more...

I have never had any issues with using my car charger,I bought mines from 5 below and worked perfectly fine with the OG evo and evo late. Sounds like an I issue with your charger or have an issue or an electrical issue with your vehicle.

Do you have/use a capacitor or extra marine battery/upgraded alternator etc., on your car stereo?
i charge mine with xbox,ps3 an cd player i even sync my music from my phone to the car stereo while its charging, Push the button combination that you push when the phone is frozen and see if the phone come on. If this battery was removable im sure you wouldn't have this issue.

Yes i do have a capacitor but this is the truck that i used to charge all my Evos, my wife has a 3D and i can charge hers with no issue, and remember the first time was with the "faulty charger" the second time was from my car stereo.... i can go now and charge my old 3D my wifes 3D and a original Evo and all of them charge ok, why would this one be different?
Mine worked ok with the Kindle Fire AC charger (which charges really fast for some reason?)

Kindle Fire charger is rated either 1.5amp or 2amp which is why its charging fast. Our normal chargers are rated 1.0 amp.

I let my phone run dead and when I put it back on the charger, i had to wait til the led quit blinking to turn it back on. Well its been on for over 10 minutes and its still saying 1%. Any one else have this problem or a solution?

That didn't work. I tried restoring different ROM. The charger in using will charge my brothers LG Android, but mine won't. Funny, it will charge a little but in recovery, but spots and does nothing when it's running. I guess I'm going to have to take it in to best buy for an insurance claim. They told me they would exchange it if something went wrong. I guess I should restore it back to stock then.

I would try a different charger. I noticed with this phone different USB cables work while others don't , same with chargers. Maybe it's just my phone but it's defo picky about what you plug into it
Try charging it from your PC
Worth,a try

Because I get anxious and make bad decisions. Lol
I was using the same charger for a month and today it was working, then all of a sudden it wouldn't charge my phone 1%. But would charge by brothers phone.
I came home and put it on my wall charger and it's working but charging is still slow. In fact, it still isn't fully charged yet. I'll get a different car charger tomorrow and see how things go from there.
Update- phone still hasn't fully charged. Wtf man....

my car charger doesnt charge my phone at all. I even noticed that the wall wart that i used forever in my OG evo doesnt charge this phone at all. It'll sustain the battery, but wont charge it. U may have mentinoed it, but are you using the factory wall wart and cable? If not try that or a tablet wall wart my Tf-201 wall wart works on mine.

Everything seems to be ok now. Like you said, the car charger would just barely hold the charge while I was using it. The car charger was some off brand I night from an Arab had station. In using the stock charger now and it's working ok. But my phone did dragon a while lot last might after it finally charged. Like 10 hours and 4 of then were sleeping. But I ran it down again and erased the battery stats and I'm recharging it up again now..

i got the nokia wireless charger for xmas, it worked fine for a couple days now whenever i put the phone on the charger it wont charge unless i press down hard on the phone, but as soon as i let go it will stop charging. at first i thought it was the charger so i took my phone to verizon and tried it on the charger they have on display and same thing happend. any one ever heard of this? or got any tips? only thing i can think is charging it on the charger has warped the back since it gets hot, but thats just my opinion.
Could be a case or cover on your phone?
If you got ur phone hot enough to warp the back, you'd know it, lol.
I had a phone that was intermittently working on the wireless charger, and VZW replaced it promptly, no more trouble.

hmm, same problem ish for me....I have an otterbox case, and it detects charging just fine. Though I can go to sleep and wake up with it at less than I put it on..yet again, it shows it's charging.....Could it just be getting too hot and stopping the charge?
My phone stopped charging from my Nokia pad also. Took it into Verizon and tried to charge in a known good charging pad and it still wouldn't charge. They issued me a replacement phone and no trouble since

That would be a royal pain....I'm bootloader unlocked.
Wireless charging is considerably slower than charging via a wall outlet and maybe slightly slower than charging from PC via USB.
The closer the phone is to the pad, the stronger the charging should be. Putting large cases on the phone may possibly cause it to charge slower.
If its charging slower than the phone drains the battery you should make sure the phone makes as close contact to the pad as possible (thin or no case at all) and make sure you don't have overclocked settings or tons of apps that constantly run in the background. You might also consider leaving the screen brightness on automatic so when you charge it at night and the screen comes on it doesn't use full brightness.
Try these things and report back if the situation doesn't improve.
been using wireless charging since i got my DNA on my energizer. as soon as i got my new case (trident) it stopped working THAT night, no prior problems. I thought maybe the case was too thick. tried with my old Verizon TPU which worked fine and without a case, and now it wont stay charging for more than 5-10 minutes MAX, and usually not for more than half a minute... if i push down as well, generally it starts to charge. I really don't want to get a new replacement. I don't see how this feature could break as it did! i would only imagine it would just happen again..
i am glad i am not the only person who has ran into problems with the nokia pads, i tried the pillow and just the plate and it would never charge longer than 30 - 45 seconds, weird thing is that my lg pad charges fine.
i am using the energizer pad. I can only hope its the pad and not the phone! the nokia pad looks nice. hell i guess ill stop in a Verizon store and see if it works there! cant believe it would only last a month. even more odd is that it stopped working when i got my case. i wonder if having the case caused it? i went to sleep with it charging and it seemed fine, woke up to 22% charge. second night with case off the phone was dead when i woke up. previously my phone would be 100% ready to go and cooled off by the AM!
And again I wake up to my phone not being charged even though the charging light was on....seriously?
Random too...some nights it works. Some it doesn't...
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using Tapatalk 2
I had charging stop last night on me, Took the phone off, put it back on and charged to 100 after that.
Had this happen to 2 DNA's! I think it has to do with the phone getting too hot which results in a hardware failure on the device itself. I honestly gave up on wireless charging.
Hello,
I woke up this morning, went to take my EVO off the charger (and there was no light), and started it up. It didn't do anything. I tested if it was the outlet. The outlet worked just fine, as my iPad worked when it was plugged in. So I tried the charger. The charger worked fine with my Nexus 7. So I took my phone to my computer, took out the battery, put it back in, and plugged it in through USB. NOTHING AT ALL.
This is my second EVO. It's not even rooted. Please help!

I just noticed something else.
When I hold a finger at the bottom left edge of the camera, on the side with the SD card slot, and I plug the phone in, it gets really hot... So hot that my finger feels burned after touching it about 10 minutes ago.
I would take the battery out now.
Buy a new one, and hope for the best

I had the same after flashing with plugged-in charger. I charged my accumulator in another phone, installed stock rom and locked bootloader. After than - again s-off and I installed custom firmware. Since that time everything have been working fine.

This sounds like fried motherboard to me.
You've got to be careful with those aftermarket batteries. I got one that performed extremely well, and I really didn't have any issues with it until I noticed a strange plastic burning smell coming from my car console. The USB/car jack I was using for my HTC Evo 3D was super hot! I was like, WTF? To make a long story short, I discovered that it's the battery. It was pulling much more power than it should for the recharge. So I put in my backup battery and it was fine. I put the questionable battery in my backup Evo 3D and tried to charge it in the car--same thing, the plug got molten hot. Definitely the battery and not the phone. Anyway, if I'd left it going, who knows if the phone would have ended up damaged.
Hello,
I am so f*%#ing tired of HTC right now.
Earlier this week, my EVO 3D died after being plugged in once I went to bed. I woke up, and the phone wouldn't start, and gave no sign of life.
I borrowed my brother's old EVO 4G LTE.
Just a night or two ago, I plugged the phone in after it died from low battery. When I plugged it in, the notification led was flashing red/orange, and I kinda dismissed it, and unplugged the phone.
Later that night, I plugged the phone back in.
When I woke up the next morning, the 4G LTE gave no sign of life. It died too, like my 3VO. This is really fuggin annoying.
Im using a stock HTC charger, nothing done to it. Totally original.
Please, xda, I'm begging you for help. What is going on with my phones/charger? :crying:

No, I haven't. But, when I plugged the phones into a USB port on my computer, they did absolutely nothing. No light. Nothing.
I'll try another charger, but I don't think it'll work.
Also, the 3VO. When I plug that into the charger, it gets scorching hot right by the lower left corner of the camera/right side of the SD slot.

Get a voltage monitor and watch what's happening. Maybe getting too much current? I'm not well educated on the subject though, so just throwing it out.

The charger can go bad if the outlet is unstable, it's pretty common for outlets to fluctuate. It can screw up pretty much anything that requires a certain range
It's alive!
Hello again!
I just used my brother's HTC charger, and the phone's red light came on again! After holding the power button on the EVO 4G LTE for a little while, it came back on. Turns out his phone just does that when it's really low on battery. (aka 0%)
The 4G LTE is on charge, but when I plugged in my 3VO, the red light came on, too! My phones are alive!
Thank you all so much.:victory:
-cburk01
Chargers have a step-down transformer in them. When one half or the other goes, you get fluctuations in current. With regard to outlets, you will either receive 110-120v, or nothing. Nothing below or under, as it's fed directly from the breaker box via a rated breaker.
I guess I would have tried a different charger from the get-go.
