[Q] Do all EVO's have this strange battery charging behaviour? - HTC EVO 3D

Everytime I charge my phone to full I can see that the charging is not linear. (See screenshots) Why is it doing this?
Anybody else get this? It seems to almost stop gaining any more charge and then suddenly starts charging right towords the end of charging.
BTW. My phone was doing this right from the first week I had it, i.e. brand new battery.

don't know if this is normal but it would make sense to keep the battery from overheating or exploding. might even help with the overall lifespan of the battery.

Yeah it does that to stop overheating because otherwise it will overcharge.

Oh, ok. I thought there was something wrong with the battery.
So, thanks for info guys, I'll recharge my phone on a cold windowsill in future.

At Full Charge
The bit at the top of the curve, where it comes down after it hits 100% even though it's still on charge is deliberate. The 3vo charges to 100% and then stops charging until it comes down to 95% before starting to charge again. The (better) alternative would be to switch over to trickle charging at a lower current once it hits 100% but HTC have gone for an easier option.
If you left it charging at full rate ot would overheat pretty badly, but at least on an overnight charge you could fry your breakfast on it in the morning...

If you are looking to improve battery life then unplug and replug your phone in after it says its at a full charge. Usually it will be about 95% so you can get an extra 5% of charge.

Does your 3D's battery achieved 100% Charging??? Mine Hasn't!!

For some reason my 3D's battery never achieves 100% charge. I leave it charging using the HTC charger included and I never get more than 98% charge after 12 hours.
Anyone else have this problem??

Mine does, but it takes a while. Normally it charges up pretty fast up to like 95. Then it slows down and once it gets to 99, it stays there for atleast 10 mins and finally goes to 100. One thing I did notice though is when it gets to 100, even if its on the charger it will start falling back to 99 and 98.
Mine has never reached 100%, even if I unplug it when the light turns green and plug it back in it will just stay at 99%.
I've woken up to 97 or 98, it has never gone above that.
I believe HTC has some sort of smart charger system on here. It will charge quickly to ~ 95, then slow down until it hits 100. Then it will quit charging at all until it drops back down to ~95 or so and repeat the process. Supposedly, it will increase battery life by not overcharging it.

He is right....on the OG EVO its would display 100 while it was dropping but the 3vo shows the actual percentage
Once the led turns green unplug restart and plug back in. Should now show the led red again and finish charging. After once it should be fine.

I am using an aftermarket stand alone battery charger. When I took it off the charger this morning it only shows at 91%. Does anybody have any idea why that would be the case? I have used this same kind of a setup with my Evo and it was always at 100% when I pulled the battery off the charger. I was even using extended batteries and never had a problem!

Probably some kind of safeguard chip built into the battery that does this even on aftermarket wall chargers. I have never seen this before and every aftermarket charger I have had has charged the batteries to 100% and they stayed there, but maybe HTC got hip to the aftermarket chargers and implemented the battery mod to work on them too. Just a guess and there is no proven fact to this statement.

My 3D wouldn't charge to 100% until I ran it until it shut down due to low battery and charged it until the green light like 3 times. Once I hit that magical 3rd time, it showed 100%.
at first it was only orange light , but after unplugging then plugging back in I get green light.
you can get a 100% charger like others have said, but for sure the charging software makes it tricky

Thanks man. I thought I was going crazy, b/c I wake up every morning to about 96% charge after about 8hrs on the charger. Totally makes sense now. (pun intended )
Every wall hub charger I get from ebay has helped charge all my HTC and Nexus S phones better. I always get 100%, and they stay there not draining to 90% in under 5 mins like the wall plug does.
I abhor the wall plug and have avoided it like the plague..not only that, but micro USB breaks very easily and is not a sturdy charging port.
I see them break on every modern model phone today. It's just a horrible unsturdy design. Wish we'd go back to mini usb.

That is the problem. Every one that I have ever used also charged and kept them at 100%. This battery did not. It came off the charger after a full day of being fully charged and it was at 91%
I have seen mine go to 100% once. They must have done something new here with either how it charges, or how it computes the percentage remaining, since this is the first HTC phone I have had (I've had them since the Palm Treos) that doesn't go from 100% to 90% in the first 10 mins of use.
Perhaps HTC has implemented an SBC-like charging system on the E3D

I think it might be something else. The battery does not show 100% even off of the stand alone charger!

[Q] Battery Discharges After Full Charge

So I have an odd problem I've never seen on any of my cell phones before. I charged my phone today using the charging cable and USB wall adapter that came with my EVO 3D. I noticed that once it got to 100%, it started to discharge while still plugged in. The notification light stayed green, and under Settings > About Phone > Battery, the Battery status showed fully charged. So I went under SetCPU about an hour later and went into Info > Battery, and the battery level had dropped down to 94% even though plugged in. So what's up with this? The only things I can think of is that either I have a defective device (which I want to return anyway for the dead pixels), a bad charging cable, a bad or uncalibrated battery, or somehow my device was consuming more power than what was being supplied to it by the charger.
Anybody else have this issue before? I'm really thinking about swapping out my phone for another one before my 30 days are up. And by the way, do you think I'd have to pay a restocking fee if I want to get a replacement phone? I have all the original packaging still.
The charger just isn't charging after it hits 100%. Which saves your battery from overcharging. If you connect the cable again after taking it off it will continue charging. This has not negatively affected my battery life. Which is sitting at 50% after 15 hours.

This is normal behavior on Evo 4g and Evo 3d. Supposedly prolongs battery life...
It drops down to about 95 percent then charges to 100 then down to 95 and so on. Its bad for the battery to charge after it has reached 100 percent. so it has to drain a little before being charged again.

So, say I leave my phone plugged in all day, will it continuously drop down and then recharge itself after it reaches a certain point?

How far down will it drain before recharging? VintageSin said his phone is at 50% after sitting plugged in for 15 hours. I'm wondering if it's possible to bring the battery down to 0%.
You misunderstood his post.hes saying the charging method has not affected his phone as its still at 50% after 15hrs.

Im assuming the phone is unplugged because the phone starts to recharge the battery at 95%.I have also noticed this cycling.

Hmm... interesting. That would explain why my battery is down between 95% to 100% whenever I wake up in the morning after leaving my phone plugged in overnight.

Battery only charges to 99%

When I charge my phone it only charges to 99%. I'll leave it in for a while, come back and it's only at 99%. Either charging in the wall, or on the computer. It used to make it to 100% then all of a sudden it just stays at 99% regardless how long it charges. So the charging light always stays on and never lets me know when it's fully charged.
Any idea why?

I get that too. But eventually it will get to 100%. There has been times where it was charged to 100% then suddenly drop to 99% even though it still plugged in.
Did you get your phone recently? I'm thinking its because the battery needs to be conditioned.

I've installed Battery Widget (from Market) and it reports 100%. I plug in every night and in the morning it reads 100%.

New Amaze Android Revolution HD ROM by mike1986?
This happens with many devices. I have not seen this yet on my Amaze but I am sure at some point it will happen. Try turning the phone off and charging it to 100% then power it on also try running the battery all the way down and letting it charge to full UNINTERRUPTED over night. If those dont help you can always try another rom with better battery management or go into a t-mobile store and get a battery replacement if your battery is still under warranty. Hope this helps
HTC does this on a lot of phones. It is a safety default to keep the battery healthy and safe. I had this issue with the Evo. The only way to fully charge a battery is to have other a wall charger or a SBC kernel.

My stock battery is 3.8v, and it only goes to 100% if I charge it in the phone. If I use my wall charger, it shows up at 99% when I put it back in my phone. I have two aftermarket batteries that show about 98% when charged from the wall. I am thinking that the phone charging circuit is set for 3.8v, and might possibly overheat the aftermarket batteries (3.7v). I saw one review that said these batteries melted the top of his SIM card. I'm not planning on trying that; I use the stock, charging every night, and swap the spares in if I run out of charge during the day.
I just remember hearing the same stories when I had my evo. You could charge for hours and unplug it and it would almost immediately drop to 99 or 98. So my previous statement may or may not help.
I charged mine over nite and woke up to it being 99%, left it for another hour or two and it hit 100%. I would say to leave it a little longer to get that last 1%.

For anyone who is running quicksense, if you want better battery life, charge your phone completely and go into recovery > Advanced> wipe battery stats. And done!

I find that if my phone its powered off while charging, it shows 100. If powered on, it shoes 99.

this is normal for lithium ion batteries...it also depends how the manufacturer perceives the battery...some manufeacturers say that your phone is 100 percent but it might only be around 95-98...overcharging lithium ions are bad...also some manufacturers say you have 10 percent left while you might actually have 15 or maybe to percent left...this is a fail safe method to shut off the phone and keep the battery from draining completely WHICH IS REALLY REALLY BAD FOR LITHIUM IONS...OVER CHARGING THE BATTERY IS BAD TOO...perhaps htc's thresh holds are a little different and actual to the real battery life.
also not a good idea to use your phone or any lithium ion device while its charging

A parasitic load (which means using phone or turning screen on while its charging) confuses the charger by depressing the battery voltage and preventing the current in the saturation stage to drop low. HTC Amaze 4G Taking 4+ hours to Charge

I've had my new HTC Amaze 4G for 4 days now and absolutely love it, what a great phone! The battery life is great (I'm careful with all my settings) and I'm only finding issues with the charging TIME.
It's the second time I've charged it and after noticing how excessively long it took the first time, I clocked it this time and it took 4 hours and 45 minutes. I used a charger that I've used on many other devices with no issues (5 volts 1 amp).
The battery level increases 1% every 3 minutes, which adds up to 5 hours. I calculated this both with the screen on and by averaging out over a longer period of time with the screen off. I also tried with the phone completely off and the results were the same.
I made sure there were no processes hogging up processor time or excessive RAM usage.
When I go into to "Settings -> About Phone -> Battery" Battery status clearly states: Charging (AC).
I have also read somewhere that this can possibly be set this way by design (possibly to prevent the battery from heating or overcharging and saving its life in the long run).
I also realize that the phone is new, and the battery needs a few charges to be settled, but 5 hours to charge on the second charge just seems like too much.
On the HTC product support website, on the faq there is the following question/answer:
How long should it take to charge my battery?
"Your battery can take up to 4 hours to fully charge using the AC charger. It will take much longer using the USB as that is the trickle charge function."
Can anyone out there with an HTC Amaze 4G confirm how long their phone takes to fully charge from the AC charger?
I'm thinking/hoping this is a defective device/battery/setting...I don't like having to wait 5 hours to have my phone fully charged.

Ok, I'd like to add one more thing. I finished charging the phone last night (about midnight), by the time I went to bed (around 2 am), after barely having used it, it was still at 100%, now at 9:30 am (7.5 hours later) the battery level is at 95%. I had everything off and very little background services and apps running. Even the network type, is only set to the basic, no data connection was live/standby.When I check the battery status/histogram this is what I get:
-44% went to Cell Standby
-42% to Phone Idle
-8% Display
-6% Wifi (I think I used it before I went to bed, but turned it off right then, and it remained at 100% battery)
I'm not too happy...this can't be right...it shouldn't take 5 hours to charge and discharge this fast? Can anyone shed some light please?

Yeah that sounds about right. Don't complain man. Your battery life is pretty good compared to other devices. My device takes 3 hours to fully charge and can last 24 hours with minor use. Just charge it when you go to bed and you won't notice the time it takes
My desire hd takes almost as much (Around 3 hours) and my Optimus 3d prolly takes even more (5?) to fully charge from a full discharge...
(With Stock HTC/LG Charger. The HTC's AC Adapter is 5V/1A [Shouldn't that charge a battery in under 1 1/2 hrs?]. Not too sure about the LG)
They take Much longer to charge on Computer/Laptop USB Ports. The Optimus 3d actually loses battery while charging (With screen on) with a USB port.
Also, 5% a night is pretty good. My desire hd goes down 3-5% per night (2g, no data enabled.) or 0-1% with Airplane Mode. (Rooted, Revolution 6.31)
And my optimus 3d pretty much runs out of battery in <100 mins with full brightness while Playing Games - It goes down more than 1% per minute depending on the game being played, especially if 3d Converter is used. This is pretty much the same for all GB/Froyo ROMs.
Just charge it when you go to bed and you won't notice the time it takes

I Agree. Both phones usually last around a day at least for me. You could always try a battery monitor such as GB Battery Stats or watchdog (The CPU One). CPU Intensive applications and Awake time during sleep are usually what cause bad battery life. Faster chargers such as 2A ones should also charge the battery faster, but they might reduce the overall battery life.
I would suggest buying a wall charger and cheap batteries from ebay. They last almost as long as stock batteries and cost only ~$2-4 each. [They apparently explode though. Never happened to me.]

Both phones seem to charge from 0-90% much faster than 91-100% as well. I'm not sure why, since 100-90 wastes just as fast as 90-0. (Charging from 90%-100% battery practically takes a third of the full charging time)

I just finished charging it this morning, and it's FASTER NOW!
Took exactly 2 hours and 37 minutes (Battery Moniter is a great app!).
I think it actually may be due to the phone having some sort of smart charging system which "looks after" the battery. Since the phone is new, it might be wanting to start it off with some slowww charges and gradually speed them up.
But I still have to narrow it down some more since this time I'm actually using the supplied cable and charger (the ones I tried before were also 5V/1A).
The cable I was using (had it for a while now) had a pinch or two, it didn't look that bad, but I'm thinking it could also be the cable (could be shorting)!
I'm gonna do some testing on this cable now and report back my findings!

Ok, so it actually turned out to be the cable. I really feel like a dumb ass...lol. Oh well, at least I figured it out!
So yeah, one good way to see if your cable / charger is good is to use Battery Monitor, and on the main screen where it says your device is charging (AC) and etc..it will also say the actual amperage (in mA) being fed to the battery...that number should be within the 500 to 750 range, if its lower, there is likely something wrong. (Mine was at 16...lol).

My problem was the cable, and it was causing the phone to take five hours to CHARGE, not discharge.
These phones don't hold charge for too long, and the more activity you got going on, the more power it will consume. The screen hogs up the most power, so using the device constantly (especially with high intensity background light) will drain the battery very quick. First smart move would be to set the screen intensity to the lowest setting. Wi-fi and bluetooth, if you're not using them, shut them off. Open your task manager (or get a decent one from the market) and kill all the apps you got running in the background.
Games also require a lot of graphics/processing power, so naturally they will drain a lot of battery too.
Edit: There are some special cases where it could also be related to your network or even simply coverage zones exposed to the device. If it's stuck in a zone where it has weak 4g and 3g signals, it will keep bouncing back and forth causing more drain than normal on the battery as well.
If you've taken all these things into account, then you may have a defective device, then you will want to setup an RMA...or just take it back wherever you bought it and ask to exchange.

My skyrocket takes about 3.5 hours to charge from 10% to full charge. If I plugged it in the car charger and run google map with the radio on the background, it would slowly drain the battery even though it was plugged in. My iphone 4 did not do this. It charges very fast and does not drain the battery even when I had several apps running in the background. I think the skyrocket consumes more power whether it is plugged in or not.

Hi, what you need is a charger with a higher amperage rating than 500mA (or 0.5A). Buy a charger that is rated for 5V/1Amp like this one and your problems should go away.
The phone is basically "burning" more energy than it is receiving from the USB charger, hence the discharge.
To know the amperage rating of your charger look on the label for numbers that look like "5V/500mA"...

Most illegal threads are trying to move from Mexico.
But, you need a charging source more powerful then the base 500ma, (or whatever that term of measurement is) computers are only supposed to supply 500ma to a USB port so AC adapters are typically better for charging. But feel free to follow the post above and check the rating on the charger.

i just got my amaze, and i have auto sync off and screen on dim and it still takes for everrrrrrr to charge.. ive used a few different chargers and cords but i just got the phone so maybe after a few charges it will speed up? not sure my mytouch 4g never took this long although it would get verrrry hot

Well the amaze does have a hefty battery, mine is charging a bit faster than when I first had it

Make sure to use the original charger and cable that was supplied to you by T-Mobile/HTC
I noticed the 12-pin cable is faster than the 5-pin.

Sounds about right. If you want better battery life either root it or buy another battery.
To get really good battery life ?...you got the wrong phone man.

So I heard that the reason why when you unplug your phone it immediately goes down to 98 or 97% is because the phones are designed to charge as fast as possible. Is there a way to program the phone to slow charge? (like overnight) so that it will get longer/better battery performance?
I am not sure where you heard that.
The reason that you unplug it and it is at 97% is because once the phone charges the battery to 100%, it slows down on the voltage. It lets the battery drain a bit, to about 95% and then trickle charges up to about 99%. It does this cycle until you take it off of the charger. So, you may unplug it at anywhere from ~ 95%-99%.
Well, wolf is probably correct, but I believe it is the charging circuitry in the phone and battery that regulates the charging rate. The charger voltage output will be the same at all times.
What I would like to know is how the charging system works and what aspects can be modified by the kernel.

You can make it charger faster in the kernel, but not too much.

The actual reason is that it's "bouncing" the charge in the background, and due to the way the OS set up to report, you don't see it happening. Li-ion batteries are happiest when they are either charging or discharging. The fastest way to wear one out is to hold it at a single charge for a period of time. To combat that, the kernel lets it get to full charge, and then switches off charging so the phone is operating off of battery for a bit. After it discharges a bit, it switches charging back on and tops it back off. That way, you have a full, or at least a nearly full charge when you unplug, and the battery is kept in a constant state of charge or discharge so it doesn't wear out as fast. The OS plays a little psychology with the user. Most users are going to expect that the battery should be fully charged when they unplug it, so once it hits 100% the first time, it no longer displays the actual percentage...it just keeps displaying 100%. After it's unplugged, it rapidly (over the course of a few minutes) scales down to the actual number before it's starts showing the real number. That makes people think it's starting at 100%, and it lets the battery longevity be maximized.
There are certain battery monitor apps that let you actually see the bouncing effect. The one build into Android Tuner is one.
