Please no flaming. My first post.
I'm too new to post in the developers forum, so I am here.
(And maybe I can help a fellow noob in the process!)
Background:
I rooted my Nook using Indirect's method here:[Blocks OTA's!] Full root for Nook Tablet. [11/20/11] [Permanent root!], back in January.
It was fairly simple and straight forward. I encountered no issues/problems.
I also installed Indirect's App to flash recovery, and ROM Manager from the Market (Play).
So, I started with a stock, rooted Nook. Nothing prior ever flashed.
I used TB (Titanium Backup) to back up all my apps data. It's a must if you want to save your progress in games and custom settings you've made in apps.
I took the plunge yesterday & flashed CM9 for Nook Tablet Alpha 0.03. The things that "don't" currently work with the ROM were things I wasn't worried about, and enough DID work for me to want it, like NOW ! LOL
NOTE: This ROM has an expiration clause. It is still considered Alpha, and is updated constantly/continually, and is valid only for a limited time. Do not think what you have today is what you'll have in the future. Check the thread for updates and issues.
Using the above mentioned software to flash the ROM went very smooth.
I had no issues or problems flashing the ROM.
I installed GAPPS that I got from here: goo.im Again, no issues flashing it either.
(I used this video as a guide ~> YouTube.
I watched Albert's video first as a primer. Albert's video is rather long, but it helped a lot to understand the steps involved, and the shorter one was easy to follow during the actual flashing .
MAKE SURE you do the wipe step! VERY important. From what I have read, not doing this causes most of the problems encountered.
I started my new "ICS" Nook Tablet & what a difference. Not just in appearance. Performance is noticeable as well.
(I did have one issue, that was of my own doing! I couldn't get WIFI to work. Great signal, just couldn't connect. Why? MAC filtering on my router ! DUH ! LOL. All is good now.)
I re-booted so I could start adding my apps back and customize it.
I signed into "Play" and downloaded most of the apps I had before I flashed. Very few weren't compatible with ICS. All apps installed quickly with no issues. Some apps I had before weren't compatible with the stock rooted Nook, and they work now with ICS. I installed Go EX Launcher, just because I like the options and am familiar with the workings of it. Again, no issued installing or customizing it.
I signed into Amazon & downloaded my apps from there as well, and with a few exceptions, all installed as well.
I then used TB to restore my data from my games so I wouldn't lose progress, and they all updated smoothly. Quell was the one I really wanted to save the progress on & it started me from where I left off before flashing.
Issues:
Scrolling on a web page is slightly thready visually, but not so much that I'd dump the ROM.
I was able to get YouTube to play both SD & HD video. Some have said HD wasn't working for them, but I didn't have that problem.
I haven't tried the microphone, and a few other thing, but I'll update this post with any issues or comments as time progresses.
Overall, can't wait until this ROM is out of Alpha/Beta status. It is fantastic !
Not a bad post for first. Just so you know, you wouldn't have posted this in the
development section even if you could. This was more of a general post than anything and would be more appropriate there, but no harm no foul. You say that you have youtube sd/hd playing. Just curious netflix still doesn't work ,right. I haven't flashed cm9 for awhile and not quite sure what all is working at this point. Thanks....
Moderator, please move thread to general.

Right. Only audio in Netflix, no video running .03
It has expiration because some smarta** tried to sell it to e***.
CM9 wont play HD videos no HWA, yet.
Not flaming, just wanna point out that there's CWM (clockworkmod) and then there's CM9 (cyanogenmod9) there's no 'CWM9' as the threads title states. I know it can be tough in this forum cuz people throw terms around a lot. Not flaming, just a helpful tip.

Thanks for the replies.
I changed the title, (Thanks SilentStormer)
demetris_I, You are correct about the SD vs. HD video. Neither the YouTube mobile web site, nor the app will run HD video. My mistake.
And yes, some people suck. They'll try to make a dime any way they can. Buyer beware

I think I'm going to wait awhile on mine. I'm beginning to see others having certain issues that a n00by like me would probably not enjoy All & all I'm happy with my rooted 1.40 Nook. I may just wait for the SD card version of CM7 to play with it. I sure do admire these guys that know how to work with this code and develop OS systems Sure wish I knew how to do this stuff.
I'm perfectly content with the way I currently have my NT set up. Rooted, OTA-blocked, using an alternate launcher, and having a shortcut to the default launcher if I want to read something or browse the Nook Store.
Now if CM9 becomes available on the NT, I might have to give that a shot.
I think some of the main features that a custom ROM such as CM7 can provide are bluetooth and multi-touch (which isn't available yet but currently under development). I'm not sure that's available for a rooted stock ROM. I saw some video of someone using a PS3 controller to play emulated games on their Nook Color so I can imagine that would be a great freature to add on.
I'm going to wait until they do further testing with CM7, at least until they get to a beta stage but I think it's the way to go for me.
I'm just waiting for a sure way to access the nook library. I have some magazine subscriptions that I don't wanna give up.
One of the main reasons I got the Nook Tab is because I saw that people were working on getting CM7/9 going on it. I had a $250 gift card from work to B&N, so it was a winning situation for me. I doubt I would have bought it if CM7 hadn't been on the horizon. I've actually never used it stock, I had it rooted and all B&N stuff stripped off within hours of buying it.
I definitely recommend flashing CM7 unless you are completely married to the stock B&N Stuff, then wait for the SD install method. Flashing CM7 is easier than most of the steps required to root, side load, fix unreadable menu's, etc, all the dumb crap I had to d to make this thing usable.
Almost everything is available in the market. No sideloading, no finding apps with your browser and tricking the market, almost everything works. All my important apps and favorite games have worked with no issues.
Menu's are all standardized, everything is readable, all options are open, just fantastic having all those little pieces working in every app with no fuss or hacks.
Rebooting is so much faster, not sure if it was all the apps I had or what but my reboots took forever with my stock rooted, now are 3 times quicker.
The thing just feels snappier, not sure if it is a placebo effect or not, but definitely feels faster.
Overall it feels like a tablet instead of a hacked e-reader. There may be some bugs that surface and a few things are being looking to, but so far so good
CM7 was the reason why I'm going to get a NOOK... well and the books lol
I installed the B & N app from the market and everything works great. I have been able to use my existing account to purchase books i have been able to move books over onto the Sd card in .epub format and read them. Make sure to fix permissions andcormate cache anddevlick cache if you are updating from first CM7 alpha.
Yeah i love cm7
I was nervouse when i first did it but it turned out all right in the end. Now ive got CWM and titaniumbsckup functionality and i can flash any rom or anything. Not only is cm7 a great new version of the OS but it opens the door to all the other roms that you could ever want to install. Only complaint is that the HD youtube videos lag, but the devs know about it and are fixing it. Id highly recommend it. Hope you take the plunge!

the only thing that worries me is that I have 1 week left to decide if i want to buy the 2 year warranty. what would happen if i need to send in for repairs if it has cm7?
Lined up all the tools I might need if disaster were to strike. Stuck the zip onto an SD card & went for it. I'm not looking back. Warranty? I won't be needing no stinkin' warranty.

I installed CM7 and messed around with it for a day or so. It worked great - with the exception of streaming video. Where HULU and Vulkano (slingbox-like DVR that works with my Directv) were smooth as silk with rooted NT on CWM, the CM7 vers. video would briefly "hang/stutter" from time to time - a bit annoying. Others have reported this same issue, and I know that the Devs are working on this.
Also, I lost all of my B&N stuff - not a huge loss - but think I may wait for the SD card version which, if I understand correctly, will allow me to hang on to that.
That said, I reverted back to the stock 1.4.0 using the "magiccard" method, and then re-rooted with Albert's SD card method (vers 4.50). So, assuming the unit keeps working (will boot,) does anyone know if there is a way for B&N to tell that a unit has ever been on CM7/rooted? I thought the magiccard method basically wiped the partitions and put the stock rom back on.
Thanks! Bob

I purchased my nook tab specifically to tinker with and have no investment in BnN ecosystem. So far I've have some really frustrating problems that took a week or two of research and tinkering to work out. It has been a great learning experience. I now know a little about the inner workings of the Android OS and have a functional tablet to play with while the wife watches Netflix. Getting CM 7 working gave me a real sense of accomplishment. Before getting the tab for xmas I only had experience rooting my Droid 3 (one click method at that), So I am a real n00b too. I just went into this wanting to tackle my own problems. My advice, if you like what you've got, don't fix what ain't broke. - yes I am a hillbilly thankyaverymuch!
2nd post in xda sent from nook tab CM7
I'll try it out if/when an SD bootable version comes out. I read and buy a lot of graphic novels and comic collections that are only viewable via the built-in reader.
For awhile I was just following on the developments and waiting till a stable version was released of CM7 because I was able to do what was needed with stock + root. The other day I decided to do some catching up in the NT scene and figured the CM7 Alpha12 looked pretty stable, so I gave it a shot. I am really glad that I did this, the NT just runs so much better than it did using the stock firmware + root. I am loving CM7 Alpha12 so far. If you were skeptical about installing CM7 due to it's Alpha status and possible bugs, as long as you haven't invested a ton of money into the B&N Store or stream a lot of video content. I think you should give it a shot because TEAM-B has been doing a great job.
Changed my mind and glad I did! !!! Loving CM7
I think I am going to wait for the SD version.
I think after a stable method to root/ block/ flash comes out that us non-devs can execute with consistent success I will try CM7. I am rooted - Thanks Indirect! - but I also had problems with the last time I tried CM7. At this point it's just not worth the extra work to try and fix a borked NT. Having said that, Veronica's ROM here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1512373 is pretty awesome looking and I can't wait to try it out.

I'm terrifically sorry - I've committed the noob crime of failing to search....and posting (inadvertently) in a thread that was already dead. I found the answer to my question. Sorry for the nuisance.
- Computerslayer
So I posted in the build thread, but thought maybe someone might have a quick answer that I've missed.
I Unlocked (I used the 1.83 clean SBF since megaupload was down and I couldn't find the 2.3.4 one) then followed the instructions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1302423
and some youtube videos and some other sites lol, it was VERY stumbly getting it to give root, the unlock went fine, I think I could have even done it on the stock install I had, but I didn't... I used the 1.83 sbf in the pudding thread. (not sure if that was the right thing to do or not. I'm kind of confused on the whole rolling back thing and how it gets bricked with certain roms. I also didn't do a back up of my stock locked install so I have no idea how to get back to stock but I don't really care about that now)
Rom'd this Tablet UI:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1532182
and ran the Gappsv10 linked there. That didn't work, ran it again then it did work for gmail voice talk... but Maps, navigation, g+ all won't install and show as incompatible with my device. Same goes for FB Foursquare, Netflix, and tons of other apps... Not sure if I did something wrong or if this is normal. Oh I also tried running the latest Gapps v12 still no dice.
Any help is appreciated, I just don't have too much time to figure all this crap out... I dip in and out of romming phones for brief periods and everything changes so much and each phone is so different it always takes me forever to figure out what's what.
Since I'm begging for easy pointers which everyone hates, might as well go all in...
I want an ICS rom that has Gentop or Full Ubuntu or whatever for use in the laptop dock... is that doable?
I'll pay someone who's willing to hold my hand through getting my perfect rom sorted out. $30 first offer? It will be a pain though... I ask lots of questions.
I love XDA but I sure do wish people were a little more noob friendly and elaborate in their replies... buzz words and quippy short answers don't do it for me.
I've been doing this for years and once I know my way around a phone I'm more than happy to do so myself, and on all the car forums I'm on I try to give thoughtful complete replies to noobs, remember we were ALL noobs once at EVERYTHING.
I'm a little loopy on pain meds for a kidney stone so forgive me if this is a little ranty.
No one?
I'm going to try to reinstall the rom again. I did all the wipes and formats and reset etc before getting it running the first time....
But I rom'd cm9 last night and did the signed gapps install (tried that on the tablet ui too) and maps/navigation and all the prev. not working apps work fine...
There are a few apps that don't work but they were few and far between. CM9 is great, only downside I've seen so far is no video which is kinda big for me, I've got kids so half of my phone use is video's.... but so far I love ICS/CM.
Ensure you are using the correct gapps version. This one is for cm7.

thanks, I think either the rom I had didn't install right or is borked.
I installed clean cm9 nightly and all gapps work fine.
If only the camera and finger print scanner worked.. webtop wouldn't hurt either but overall I'm REALLY impressed with cm9 on an unsupported device.
Runs smooth hardly any glitches decent battery life.
Thanks again

I am one of the original WOOT buyers from ancient history. Tried Brilliant Corners, and Flashback. Currently running Clemsin's Beastly because it's fast and everything works. But some newer apps, etc, require later Android ROMs. I have read, and reread, the instructions for Smoother Bean but would like someone to take the time and do a cook book step by step for me.
I am on BL2. I have Clockwork MOD v3.0.2.8 installed. Do I have to go back to the POS Viewsonic ROM? Or can I go and do the DRH nvflash for 350 and then install SmoothBean?
I want to do it right as I got in LOTS of trouble before with the dreaded APX bootloop. Don't want to go through that again. I don't need a "hit this key after.." type instruction, just what procedures are necessary and in what order. And I'm unclear about the update under the instructions for the inverted playstore. Is that required and what exactly is it?
Thanks in advance for the help. This Gtablet is still a nice unit and the developers have done remarkable stuff.
It's quite simple, and well detailed in the op there. That said, it's using the DRH apx flash first, then get into recovery (no need to boot through), then wipe, and I choose to wipe /system and /data manually, do the formats as directed, then use recovery usb to load in the new rom and apply it.

Well, yes and no on the quite simple. I may be dense but I don't understand the bit just under the inverted play store in the OP. Is it just about a replacement for the birds? having read through the threads, there are those who don't have the sweet success that the dev got with his Gtab. He admits that it works on his. And others, well, nada. I was hoping to find out what is truly necessary, what is ' a good thing to try' and what is just useless to do when going to Smoother Bean. I am going to try it, just wanted to know what steps give the best chance of a decent install w/o having to tweak glitches after.... For instance, does one get a better result going all the way back to a Viewsonic ROM? Or is it just a waste of time?
The drh nvflash is required. This eliminates any need for considering the "original Viewsonic rom".
The problems people are running into are simply due to the continued tweaking happening. I have used the rom, and it works quite well, but slowed down for me, which is why I went back to Beasty. I have read that this issue has been resolved, but due to the flurry of tweaks still going on, I am waiting for a bit longer.
Bottom line, remember that these are all hacks. You may or may not have any issues, and the issues are not even fully understood. But the process is well layed out in the op. I added the extra wipes, that's all. If you have specific questions, feel free to ask, but I don't know what more to tell you.

I've been sitting with CM7 on my NT for a while -- and figure its time to leap.
Two questions:
1. Pro's & Con's of CM10 vs. CM9.
2. Is there an easy upgrade path from CM7 (or is it wipe and restore?).
Thx.

First, CM9 is virtually dead. All the work migrated over to CM10 once the source was released, and that's where all of the devs are spending their time and effort.
Second, changing any ROM is essentially 'wipe and restore' if you want to minimize your problems. The big thing you need to be careful about when going from CM7 to CM10 is that you need different versions of ClockWorkMod recovery for the different kernels -- CWM 5.x for CM7 and CWM 6.x for CM10. From what I recall off the top of my head, all of the CM10 ROM threads in the dev forum have links to the appropriate recoveries. Aside from the CMW version issue, you'll need to be careful about the touchscreen firmware -- Mik_os released new firmware that enables more than the default 2-touchpoint firmware, so you need to make sure that the touchscreen firmware and ROM agree with each other (don't worry to much, though, as the devs have been very clear about which firmware their ROMs support -- just read the dev threads carefully).

Well, if it ain't broke, don't fix it! If you already have the NT up and running with no problems with CM7, it's got great battery life and a wide selection of Android apps and games from the Play Store. With that being said, my 8-yr old son swipes my NT every day to play with, and it's been plenty robust for him running the SGT7+Cherry Picks ROM from the dev thread. From what I've seen, most of the latest JB ROMs in the dev forum have killed the biggest bugs (random reboots, audio and wifi problems), so the biggest differentiators are battery life and the extra features rolled in by the various devs.

Yep. If I were in the OP's position, I'd update to CM10 or CM10.1 and take advantage of the user profile settings to make sure the kids didn't get into anything they weren't supposed to -- settings, file manager, Play Store, etc...
@skavan you should install CM10 because there is no further development in CM9
also microfone works well on CM10. I personally would have preferred CM9 if mic worked on it.
I rooted and installed Vegan-Tab Ginger 7.1 well over a year ago and then my g tablet pretty much collected dust. My son is asking for a tablet for 4 basics things: to watch You Tube, Access Net, Play Android Games, watch Netflix. Right now the video lags or is just a black screen when trying to watch through the You Tube app and when we go through a browser, it tells us we need updated flash player. I'm so far removed from when I started with the tablet that I have no idea where to begin.
I don't know what other information you need to offer any suggestions.... When I originally rooted, I was on version 1.1 -3588 (that doesn't even make sense to me anymore!)
And, you can recommend something to meet my needs, what steps to I take to get it on the tablet? I'm happy to follow links -- I just don't know where to begin. (Do I wipe it clean? How? Do I partition it? How? Then add new ROM? How? LOL)
I have to believe I can salvage this tablet for his needs rather than buying a new, cheap tablet for him.
Thank you .... thank you!!!

I really appreciate the help!
You may have to follow the directions to move over to 1.2 I held off for the longest time but am glad I did it now. A lot of the compatible ROM's look really good and the dev's have done an awesome job keeping everything updated but I want all of the hardware to work on my GTab. I tried 2 versions of Jelly Bean last week and now back to vegan tab gingerbread. I found both versions of JB to be slow, afterall they are still beta versions. Went back to vegan tab and it runs great, even seams to run better this time. Everything works including youtube, had problems before because I updated youtube. Leave the version that comes with vegan. Just my opinion.
