[Q] Which Gingerbread ROM to use? Details within. - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I am very new to the whole flashing scene. This is actually my first smartphone. I have it flashed to Straight Talk, and I love the phone.
I have it rooted, and was thinking about trying some custom ROMS. I tried ICS first, but the lack of a good camera and panorama made me flash back to stock. I use this phone primarily as a camera.
I now have the "stock" Gingerbread ROM flashed. And I was wondering if there were any enhancements I could make to this ROM, or if I would need to flash a different one.
I do like the default layout of the phone. I would love to be able to speed it up a bit though. What I did like about ICS was how I could customize every little detail. If there were a GB ROM where I could customize, but did not lose my beloved Panorama photos, I would definitely give it a try.

Darkys is a great gb rom. Its based on stock gb so it would be reasonably familiar. its fast and stable.

You didn't tell us what variant you are on so I am going to assume you have a Verizon fascinate flashed to straight talk.
Geewiz and super clean are about equal for touchwiz ginger bread. Touchwiz has the best camera by far on gingerbread. I'd use the cm7 cherry picks by makelegs if you want aosp.
But seriously, I don't understand why you would use gingerbread at this point. The camera quality from glitched aokp ics to tw gingerbread is nearly equal. Panorama is on ice too.
Oh and darky's rom is only an option if you are on a GSM telus fascinate. It is not for Verizon's cdma version.

Superclean 3 gets my vote. Combined with KGB Kernel it is pretty smooth and everything works.

TSM Res 2.2 is a lot like SC3, but it has more available to customize. For example, you can tweak your clock, use the MIUI battery bar, change text colors, etc. In the end, both are excellent choices. KGB kernel works well with either, and it should do pretty much anything you need it to do.

It does have panorama, but the quality of it is nowhere near the stock version. Having to constantly sweep the camera instead of having it take several instant photos often leaves motion blurs or vertical slips.
I am on Straight Talk, yes. And I am currently on ICS milestone-5. I love everything about this rom, with the exception that I cannot use the flash in camcorder mode, which is big for me, and that the camera constantly force closes.
I take probably a hundred photos a day with my phone. Someone considering it stable when they use it once a week is one thing. It is not stable when used daily throughout the day.
If the camera worked on ICS I would most certainly stay with ICS. I have tried builds from all the devs. The same 2 issues persist. The LED will not remain on for camcorder or torch, and the camera force closes constantly.
Until these issues are fixed I have to use GB. I would like to find one that I can still OC to 1.4 ghz or so. My quadrant scores on ICS are in the 1650's. Stock around 1200s.
The only reason I have this phone over a normal Straight Talk phone is for the camera. Without it being 100% stable and reliable I cannot use ICS

Then your option is basically super clean 3 or Geewiz. Use the KGB kernel with it for a performance boost through over clocking .
And don't put too much stock in quadrant. It is one of the least reliable ways to benchmark a phones performance.

I don't base performance on Quadrant. I only use to to compare "ok X scored 1200 and Y scored 1500".
I am back on the "stock" GB right now.
I actually had just tried the KGB kernel. Maybe I did something wrong...I could not find any settings to overclock with that kernel. Do I need another app to overclock once on that kernel? All I did was look in the options that you get when you click on the KGB app.
I was on GeeWiz also. I flashed the ROM, booted from the ROM and flashed KGB.
I saw some people saying for other overclocks they needed NSFtools or something like that...Do I need that to overclock on KGB?
Sorry if I'm an idiot -,- I've come a long way in a week I think lol.

I would use the KGB app with the KGB kernel. I am a little curious why you wouldn't just use a camera instead if the phone for pictures. The phone will never compare as far as quality goes.

I haven't been on gingerbread for so long...
But nstools is for ics and other aosp roms.
If I remember right, maybe try voltage control? I think that's what I used back then.

I have an SLR camera when I want to take "real" photos. I still take them constantly on my phone.
I installed GeeWiz again and KGB, it is doing the android voice thing right now for its first boot.
When I went to the KGB app before, I did not see anything for cpu or voltage control. The first time I installed it via recovery, so maybe now that I've done it through ODIN it will be different.
If not I will post back in a few minutes.
With my luck, they will get the camera / torch working on ICS tomorrow and I'll get to go through the whole process again lol.
EDIT: Yea, there is no option for voltage or cpu settings. The app opens, you can adjust call / volume boost, and zram settings. Nothing about CPU / Voltage....I'm confused....

Voltage control is an app in the market. I should have been more clear.

Ah, I'll try it. I thought it was built into KGB like it is in ICS.
Really sucks that they cant get the torch working so I can use the LED for pictures because I really do like everything else about the ICS roms -,-

That worked. Up'd it to 1.4 ghz and will adjust the min once I can play with it a little.
As soon as the torch settings work on ICS I will be back to that. I really do love the UI itself. Just hate that I can only use my camera with flash but not the camcorder

Sorry about that. You will also need any of the CPU programs like voltage control, etc. I wasn't knocking you for using it as a camera, was just curious because I don't know to many people who take a ton of photos on their phone. I do here and there, but the dslr is where its at

I have ice cream sandwich on my fascinate and i hate the fact there seems to be no fix for the speaker phone.
Does superclean 3 with gingerbread allow you to use your speakerphone without the echos and feedback?
i like ics but the speakerphone issue is a dealbreaker for me.

I will keep this list updated and I've gone through these forms getting people's opinion. Tried to be as real as possible.

A ROM review/comparison should be in general, not development.
Can you move the thread for me then. I wouldn't mind if you moved it....that's cool with me.

That was the most pointless "review" ever. Added absolutely nothing. You use CM7, you don't really use anything else, you don't even know what the differences are...Do a little homework before you write a comparision

I agree
If you haven't tried a ROM, Don't say anything about it. I personally have tried all the ROMs except for Perception and Cognition. CM7 MURDERS my battery and lacks basic features that I need everyday. UnNamed/Serendipity 8 both give good battery life, fast speeds, and essential features for me.

I guess that, those issues might just be your phone. I'm running CM7 and I get much better battery using that than I do on a debloated stock rom. What are the other "essential" things that don't work? The only essential thing that is somewhat of an annoyance is the bluetooth. CM7 won't connect if the phone is in deep sleep. If the screen is on it will connect. Not a big deal.

I get 12 hours of Med usage on UnNamed. I get 3.5 hours on CM7. On BBS, the majority of the time was spent in deep sleep, yet the battery still drained like crazy. I dislike the feel of the generic apps in CM7, the camera app is super fuzzy, the Bluetooth, and lack of KIES support to restore contacts and notes.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
I didn't even realize BBS reported deep sleep stats... You sure you don't mean CPUSpy?
I've learned at this point not to trust BBS. At this point, BBS is only useful for identifying userland wakelocks on ROMs that hide userland wakelock details from the kernel. (I9100 ROMs, not sure about CM7 - I777-derived ROMs report userland wakelocks individually to the kernel instead of lumping them under PowerManagerService.) As an example, BBS completely fails to report kernel wakelocks.
It has always been my experience that CM7 will beat nearly any Samsung-derived ROM except for the most aggressively debloated ones (such as Serendipity VII on Infuse - S7 was slightly better than CM7, but not by much.)
So far, 90% of the time if a user reports excessive drain, either they installed a bad app, or they diddled with attempting to calibrate their battery, which on our devices does nothing except cause the fuel gauge to briefly "blip" below the alarm threshold on boot, causing a permanent wakelock on kernels without this fix:
https://github.com/Entropy512/linux_kernel_sgh-i777/commit/fc9eb85807302583259e27013ed184a43107bb67
Which reminds me, I need to pull request that to atinm/codeworkx and company.
Edit: FYI, CPUSpy stats are bogus right after boot. Gotta reset the timers after you've booted to get good info.
CyanogenMod 7.1 rom
After testing and comparing all these custom roms found in XDA for SGS2 i777
this is what I found after extensively testing the CyanogenMod 7.1 rom.
If you want to retain all the features of the camera's interface and video part of the
phone it's best to stay away from CM7 until the DEVS finally fix it.
I have been testing CM7 ever since I first purchased my Samsung Captivate then with
Samsung i997 Infuse and now with my new SGS2 i777 phone.
GTG's UnNamed v1.04 custom rom is by far a lot better than the CM7 rom & after much
extensive testing and comparing I have found the UnNamed rom to be the best currently
available custom rom for our phones.
Unlike the CM7 rom the UnNamed rom achieves the full & steady 30fps video recording
according to the specifications of the phone.
The user interface of the UnNamed rom's camera interface is also cosmetically speaking
by far the very best looking currently available for our phones at this time.
It does not have any missing features or user settings like CM7 currently has.
CM7 is not ready for prime time yet especially if video recording and camera user interface
(UI) are things which are important to you.
There are many missing features and settings in CM7's camera user interface as well as
not being able to auto-focus continuously during video recordings.
CM7 still cannot achieve the full continuous & steady 30fps while recording video.
So home made recordings when played back will not be super smooth and will not
achieve the video standards according to the specification of the phone.
This is strictly my personal opinion so take it for what it's worth. (most likely less than 2 cents)
But it's up to you guys, YOU decide !!!
If you hardly ever use the camera at all or just don't care about it then CM7 is fine.
(personally I use my camera a lot and video recording is very important to me.)

If video recording is important to you, you shouldn't be using the phone's camera at all.
Compared to even the most basic Canon point-and-shoot, the camera in any cell phone is a crappy toy.

I know that, I never claimed that our phones were anywhere near up to par
with something even as basic as a Canon Point and Shoot.
However to get the MOST out of our phones capabilities for those of us who do
care about photo and video quality but do not want to walk or drive around with
a seperate camera in our pockets all the time then this phone really is the next
best thing. The camera part of our phone even rivals the Nokia N8's camera.
So why cripple a $500-$600 camera phone with sub-par firmware by choosing
any firmware which degrades any part of our phones especially the camera?
(that's unless as I have stated in my previous post that you don't care about the camera)
I've tried CM7, Cognition X2, UnNamed, Perception, and Serendipity 8. CM7 I used for a couple of days but was just missing too many features for me. Cognition X2 was very good and stable, but the expanded power options were not there. UnNamed was a favorite and unused that the longest. Perception, I lost TouchWiz, and the new version I think is pretty slick. I am currently running Serendipity 8, and I really like the minimalistic approach. This ROM intrigued me since it has Display Mode. UnNamed has that now too so I may go back to it. Battery life on UnNamed seemed to be the best for me. Although others will probably say Serendipity 8 will provide better battery as it takes out the most bloatware.
So I'm for either UnNamed or Serendipity 8. Can't really go wrong with either. Seems to be very similar to each other.

[Q] Best Sense ROM

-
Hello!
Just a quickie for all of you Sense Users out there--What exactly is the best Sense ROM? I usually use MIUI, but (no hate) the lack of updates and everything is kind of aggravating and I need a Stable ROM to sit on.
Anyways, what do you guys think the best Sense ROM is?
Things I'm looking for:
-Easy Tweaks (Like the Slide to Clear notifications or Slide on capacative buttons to turn on mods built in)
-Working Camera
-Roam Only Mode
-Some kind of Audio Mod (Sony's or Beats or anything else to enhance quality and loudness)
-Actively getting updated and is stable / ready for daily usage with decent battery life

I haven't been on Sense since MIUI came out, so I'm not sure about what I should switch to during the wait for v4!
Thanks for your help!
P.S.
I have a CDMA - Sprint HTC EVO 3D.
the best... i hate threads like this. 1 million bias responses.
ROM: ive used MeanROM and InfectedROM Eternity.. they both have great developers and update almost every day. (im only mentioning these because i havent used any other 3.0 roms besides these. to be honest though, im in love with the MikRunny Sense 3.5 ROM. If 4g worked and camera preview worked using chad's kernel i would run it as my daily. its definitely worth checking out at least once.)
Kernel: Chad Goodmans kernel. you can find it at infectedrom.com.

Sweet! Thanks for the response. I've already been using Chad's Kernels and Won't ever stop even if they aren't updated anymore!
But, as for the ROMs, out of those two what do you like the best? Might be going on Vacation tomorrow and I need something to flash tonight.
Everyone else, please share your thoughts as well I'll look through them all until 3:00 AM PST.

Okay I'm lazy and Sense-Dumb / f'king stupid when it comes to bloat software (<- Haha), but whats is new with Sense 3.5 and does anything not work on it?
i like MeanROM. if you check the thread you can see Chad likes it aswell and Mikey is building it to run best with his kernels so you cant go wrong with that
MikRunny runs incredible. the only problem is if you use chads kernel it breaks cam preview. but with the stock kernel he uses everything basically works except 4g.
"Known Bugs:
4G taken out for now, once ill get more CDMA things done... ill try 4G again.
No Picture will show when trying to view a picture through FriendStream (this is because we kinda need to live with a diff album version to see 3d images/video)
Some 3D games do work from what i heard lately
QHD widgets - Notes widget is missing the bars on top/bottom"
theres an InfectedROM Eternity 3.5 aswell but i never flashed it. people say its good too though.
If you want something stable stick to 3.0 builds they have a few out that have what you want . 3.5 are buggy .
Reaper midnight blue .
didnt have a single problem with MikRunny besides no 4g and cam preview was messed up because i flashed chads kernel. other than that it was extremely fast and im definitely feelin the shortcuts+clock widget and 3.5 keyboard.
3.0 if you want everything working though. im about to flash back to meanrom right now
Warm 2.3 has been my favorite Sense ROM since I first got my phone. Overclocked with one of Chad's older kernels.. look at that up time!

I stick to stock since battery life is always good for me Nothing wrong with speed just that never helps your battery life out if you kick your cpu up it will eat more juice no way around this if you kick it up to high it will burn up lol
I haven't messed with chads latest kernels don't think I will. Nothing wrong with them just been liking stock tho that's what I prefer others prefer speed lol... From what I hear he kicks the speed up among other things always doing something new to it... I just stick to the OG Stock kernel never let me down smooth no random issues and I don't like having my CPU kicked up
Don't forget about Mean ROM!!!!!!!!!

With Chad's kernel and Mike's tweeks, this thing is Supersonic, Stable and good Battery life.

Mikey even said with his rom he gets better battery with chads kernel. I have to agree. Im using meanrom with chads latest test and im on 1:30 hours display @ 30% brightness, 4g, jumping in and out of tapatalk and browser, and im at 70% battery, and thats after a fresh flash. By far this is the best rom for me. Very very smooth. I was on infected rom 1.3.1 with tiamat kernel OC to 1.5 for a very long time. Gave up on new builds till i ran into this. The best part is no need for other kernel or no overclocking needed.

Lol if it ain't broke don't fix it I say that about stock kernel. Not doggin anything Just sayin more speed always eats more battery . I wasn't even naming roms just kernel wise stock always been good. Speed is good if you don't mind battery life. Running both cores all the time doesn't help your battery out. Running WiFi will help battery life out more due to a stronger signal while browsing the web and what not if your wireless signal isn't strong for the area you live at.
Most folks flash things without reading up on what overclocking does the pros and cons of it . Anyway for a bad ass non sense rom cm7 was always sweet back in the day .

To OP, lag is usually caused by kernels more than it is ROM's. I would suggest you do all wipes and flash a kernel cleaning script before changing kernels etc.

This also depends on the firmware version.
The first ics were slow at scrolling... but this is improved in later version.
Also every version has its problems.
Hi,
I always do a fresh wipe and use the kernel cleaning script, i have just flashed the Omega rom with the speedmod kenel and although they are great i always have a slightly laggy home screen and the app menu is the same.
Also the homescreen button has a bit of lag when you switch on.
I have had this problem with just about every rom i have tried.
Anyone recommend a rom that is smooth?
My phone is still laggy with all roms i've tried so far, mainly the app list screen, home screen and contacts screen.
Are there Hboots for this phone like there was for the Desire?
Cheers.

Which roms did you actually try?
No such thing as hboots on samsung phones.
Hi,
I have probably tried all roms up until 3 days ago, the most stable rom i tried was probably lightning rom flashed through Odin but was still not very smooth, i am about to flash Omega 9 rom with the latest speedmod kernel and see how i get on with that.
No ICS ROM is going to be perfect, and I think you should commemorate the work that developers have done to get the ROM's up to the standard they are, considering they have to work with little to no source code from Samsung. Samsung is always very slow at releasing source code, and therefore developers have to work with leaked ROM's which are still in development themselves.
I'm not trying to hate, I'm just saying that all ROM's will have their issues at the moment, and simply stating, "Why are all ROM's laggy?" is very general and very untrue, because I use Simplistic ROM, and I have not experienced any lag since flashing the latest version a week ago. Most ROM's now are getting to an excellent standard and great performance and battery life.
Chris.

I remember the GB stock roms were pretty lag free usually. But a huge battery drainer and for me, ugly(TW).
If you really really really really want a lag free(almost) experience, get an iphone. Not the best suggestion but i bet that most of us android users out there right now experiences more lags than the norm iphone user. I have my galaxy s2 and although all my friends and family has an iphone, im greatly satisfied with this little wizz. rocking latest CM9. and not switching phones anytime soon.
Or maybe flash something GB
MIUI
You might have already tried MIUI Roms for your Desire?
Galnet GB 2.3.23 is fully lag free and stable......
ICS MIUI also well accepted and appreciated by the people now, but to wait for a fully bug free one for couple of weeks more...
Thanks for the replies!
iam on stock 2.3.5 wiv 385+ apps all big time an my phone is neva laggd or crashed i get a decent batt life iam pretty satisfied wiv it,i tried heavy mutitasking but still all is good , don kno wat prblm ur facing...may the kernel is not matching wiv ur desired rom...pm me for any comments or doubts
I use this, GB with no laggs:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1422742&highlight=tweaky
There are more recent kernels, so try: Siyah, N.E.A.K. or new ikki (all of them are top noch).
And flash latest jKay:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154278&highlight=jkaymod
Try to make it lagg
Edit: Sorry I just checked that it was uploaded on multiupload(dead). So if you wish I can upload it with all new stuff added.

Haha I love your signature. It is so true, the amount of people that don't thank helpful posts.
And straight after you posted that, the OP just went “Thank you everyone,” and didn't thank anyone for their wasted time. Classic.
Chris.
Is odd, surely depends on the rom you have installed, are you having the same problem with a stock firmware?

Which is the best ICS ROM

i have been seeing all these different roms for ics, and i wonder which one should i install and i am starting from stock 2.1 so is there anything more that i should do before i flash an ics rom.
That's a matter of opinion. If you're looking for straight up speediness: ICS Slim is the way to go on that. However it is devoid of a lot of customizations that people in the community grew to love: This probably won't bother you. (unless you prefer the drop-down notifications widgets from the Samsung builds).
I personally use ExROM which is a nice compromise between ICS Slim's speediness and the wealth of features that other ROMs like Codename Android offers as well as ICS Passion. Unfortunately for me, ExROM doesn't play kindly with switching kernels (if that applies to you). Overall, you should give ICS Slim a try and go from there. A word of caution: prepare to provide your own apps (for music, homescreen, etc.) as Slim doesn't provide those.
If you don't even know which replacements apps to use (assuming you've always used core stock apps for music, email, etc.): then get ICS Passion ROM.
why thanks for the reply, could you direct me to the rom you are using?
also can you check your PM i had something to ask
Newer builds are better.
Try IC Zenwich 1.6
Stable and Fast with all the usual features you will find in a Rom plus all the customizations you may need....
Im using ICS Slim 3.4, hence its name, it is stripped down to basics so you may need to install additional apps, features that you may need...
As usual it has all the customizations you need if in case...
thanks for the input guys im getting closer to able to install ICS on my vibrant
silvercrown i sent you a pm
Another vote for ICS Slim 3.4. I was running a version of MIUI for months, waiting for the ICS ROMs to stabilize. Installation is a little tricky if you're not an uber-flasher, but it's not too bad. I also flashed the add-on pack and it's as complete a ROM as you will need. After 24 hours it's running very smooth. Definitely a daily driver. And ICS is a nice upgrade.

Thanks right now im debating to use either passion or slim, im kind of geared towards passion because i do not want to get apps like homescreen music, and such individually.
but i have been flashing for a while, i've done many phones but the samsung process is confusing, could you help me on it
+1 on ICS Passion/Euphoria
Euphoria has most of the customizations you would want for your phone, quite stable, and good battery life. They've been slow on the updates lately, but the 1 or 2 devs that were working on it are back on. Foreseeing an update soon.
Have been using Euphoria for a month now, nice and stable but apps lag a bit. Would like to know if this is a problem with other ICS roms as well. Btw, Euphoria has great battery life (better than Bionix 1.3.1)
I've tried almost every ICS rom that is currently out, and from my personal experience, ICS Zen 1.6 is by far the best. I have absolutely no lag, and I get almost 2 days worth of battery life on a single charge with the normal stock battery.
It's also very customizable, which it one of my favorite aspects. It has 3 themes that are out right now for it as well, if you grow sick of the ics blue.

From all the ICS roms you tested, can you tell if the ICS Zen have the best battery performance between them? I'm in Passion atm, and battery performance isn't been so good as I thought.

Hi,
Just installed that ROM, while it seems OK the browsing experience is HORRIBLE!
The rendering of pages is extremely slow, scrolling is slow, when zooming in it takes some time for the font to go from blurry to sharp etc...
Any ideas?
Thx.

Try forcing scrolling cache in Rom control, and changing the free memory value.
Enable the start up tweaks as well. Also, how long ago did you flash it? Generally, with any rom, you will experience lag the first day or two while the rom settles. Same goes with the battery life. It all settles in after the first day or so. But it wouldn't hurt to download an app like nstools and change the govs and such for now.
Alright. You guys have convinced to me to give Zenwich a try.
The first ICS ROM I tried was Passion 10.6. I found it to be very unstable. So I went back to my old standby, Bionix NextGen v1 with the Overstock 2.4.1 kernel. I recently tried the CM9 Nightly builds. These were much more stable but battery life was horrible. And now there is a big issue with 911. Again, back to NextGen. I was looking at trying the latest version of Passion again until I found this thread.
Are 911 calls working on Zenwich?
I'd recommend onecosmics aokp ROM. I was on passion forever but I switched recently. I had to switch to trebuchet launcher because it's my favorite and it eliminated lag. I also flashed SZ new kernel. I love the customization and nice icons!

I recently had to get a warranty exchange after my charging port stopped working a week after upgrading to ICS. When I asked if I'd have to re-update the new device I was told to hold off because there are a lot of kinks that need to be worked out in terms of the compatibility with this device.
That's fine with me because I did a master reset and all and still had the slow speeds, sporadic behavior, black screens, etc. :sly:

I do not think its a fluke. ICS has a lot of improvements but there is no way its as fast as Gingerbread. I know most people will say I am wrong but Gingerbread is much snappier and its also more simplistic. ICS also eats up more ram but besides speed and ram its very much improved as an OS.

I disagree with this, but only to a certain extent. I have noticed varying amount of lag on both GB and ICS. ICS does seem to use up more RAM on consistent basis, but that alone doesn't really mean that it is slower or indicate that it is the slower of the two OS. GB had its problems for me as well.
Overall I enjoy the user experience much more with ICS than I did with GB. That's not too say that its consistently faster, but overall Ill deal with a few quirks for the upgraded OS.

if you all were running a aosp ics rom . it would be lightyears above gb

Same problem here, mate. I loved the Note with GB, but it's been buggy as all hell with ICS. The biggest problem is looking at the blank home screen with nothing but wallpaper for up to 30 seconds after closing an app. It's a lot better using GoLauncher rather than TouchWiz, but it still suffers from a lot of lag. Hopefully they'll push out an OTA fix to better regulate resources soon.

even if you don't want to run a custom rom, you should at least do the following:
1. Use Odin to flash the latest cwm recovery
2. Boot to recovery, flash superuser to root
3. Clear cache and dalvik
4. Reboot
5. Profit
Then again, running a custom rom would be an even better idea...

Even after rooting and debloating (which helped) it was still too slow for me, go with cm9 or if you think your ready cm10 lol

If stock ics is too slow, I think a nice launcher could help if you're not addicted to Samsung widgets. Nova prime or Adwex can speed the home screen up a bunch. Especially with options to reduce scrolling time etc. I thought the stock ics was perfectly fine. I never had any speed issues or complaints, but I was running a debloated, aligned, deodexed version so maybe that had something to do with it.
Obviously best solution is custom Rom though
Good luck peeps.
