[Q] AA bats for extra power? - HTC EVO 3D

I was wondering if there is any inexpensive device I could get that uses AA batteries to charge the phone?
When I had the TP2, I had a duracel device that used 2 AA batteries and had a plugin for Ipod and USB MINI and this is usb micro, so it won't work. (this was at Costco. Anyone else remember this?)
Any ideas?

No need for such devices. Just use a AA battery and use copper wire to connect the ends of it into your battery. Should work in theory, don't know about viability though.

If you still have your USB Mini device, you can find USB Mini to Micro converters on Amazon. I use one on my car charger and it works great.

On my bus ride from basic training to ait I found one at radio shack it had a mini USB micro USB and a connection for iPod too and it was made by their generic brand but it worked pretty well

Thank you
never thought of a converter before.
Thanks for the radio shack idea.
I'll check both out.

I've been looking around for an extra adapter but can't seem to find ADP-36EH A. But there are a few companies that are selling ADP-36EH C, would this work? ADP-36EH C can be googled, let us know! =)
I just found this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....akeTrack=true&ssPageName=VIP:watchlink:top:en

Well, i found a very cheap one ( only $3). I went to a general electronics store and bought an universal 12V car charger. It has 4 heads (2 male & 2 female). The smaller head fits the Shift.
I have used the Shift as a GPS for some days now and it works like a charm.
what store did you find thi in?
the changer is incompatible for shift....
eee pc's changer DC plug is OD4.8mm ID1.75mm, shift's changer DC plug is OD5.5mm ID2.1mm.

Charger works
I bought the charger mentioned above (12V 3A) for the EEEPC on ebay for $10 and the tip was too small as expected.
So I went to RadioShack, and bought a
Size M Coaxial DC Power Plug (part # 274-1569) package of 2 for $3.
Snipped the tip and added my own. Now I have 2 power chargers!
I have the extra tip still so I can do it to a Car charger if needed too...once I find a 12V 3A one...

we sell eeepc charger's at my work and that tip is definetly too small
ooh forgot to post this but for what its worth, i tried going through lots of universal chargers and finally got one that worked.
The FSP NET 40 , using the Blue tip, works perfectly with my shift, it uses a right-angle type connector but i like it especially beacuse the tips are very securely connected meaning it wont easily snap, and the brick is still tiny, infact i think it might be smaller!

Sync/Charge usb cable

Friend: The standard mini usb cable (most popular) can be used in extUSB on D2 (Topaz) : Charging is OK and Sync is OK.
Note: I discover It after buy a 2nd cable
Well, I have so many 'standard' USB to mini USB cables I have never even taken the HTC item out of it's box.
However, the pin out on the mini port of the TD2 does allow for other things other than just sync and charge and then a specificaly wired cable would be required.
Common Mini usb works for other stuff too.
Where i live i have no high speed internet so i use my HTC pure as my internet source. Recently (after 3 weeks of use) my data cable began to come apart...
fearing i would have to buy something i couldnt afford and being mad that i have like 50 mini usb cords that i thought were useless, i found this thread and decided to test other features of the standard cable. So far I have found nothing that the cord cannot do.
my 2 cents.

Question: are you then using the HTC as a modem? If so, have you ever tried using it as a modem via Bluetooth? I have never managed this and nobody in the General forum has any advice. I can only use it via usb.
No I havent sorry. My laptop don't have bluetooth so the option never presented itself. perhaps searching for bluetooth internet sharing or making a post would be more helpful.. sorry.
On the TD2 you first need to pair your phone to your PC with Bluetooth
And then there's a program called 'Internet Sharing' on my TD2 menu, you just need to pair your phone and change what the internet sharing is going to (BT in this case) and away you go.
I've heard some carriers disable this and make you pay a surcharge for tethering, which I've heard you can get round with a registry hack
(i can't post links but I did google Touch Diamond 2 Bluetooth Internet Sharing)
Another quick and easy way to do it wirelessly is to use a program like WalkingHotSpot, which converts your TD2 into a WiFi hotspot which is my preferred method if i had to go down this path
Good luck!
The additional contacts in the original connector are for the headphones. Not used in USB & Charging.
e.g. the original car charger comes with a default USB/minUSB cable, not th especial connector as added to the TD2.

That is true. I have been searching for a TD2 car charger with its specially profiled connector but could not find one. I am afraid that the standard mini USB connector will damaged the TD2 connector after prolonged use just like what had happened to my 838Pro. You need a little help with the wires and connector when charging or ActiveSync to get them connected.
Whoa this thread is a life saver. I'm in the middle of nowhere and lost my cable so couldn't charge my phone was looking for somewhere to order online it would have cost me at least 2 weeks.
Now i'm using my camera's standard usb cable.
Thank You.
I have all the normal!
Wow, I was kind of shocked, when I tried it - it worked!!! I have bought already 2 special htc oem cables - 1st one was already broken, and have never tried the original mini usb cable since now. It works perfectly too But I suppose if the mini usb cable is used, you have to be more careful for the connector, because there is some free space inside.
i'm using oem hp camera's cable. working fine on my diamond2
Thanks friends.

Why buy new chargers or cables when u can use this adapter?

StarTech UUSBMUSBMF Micro USB to Mini USB 2.0 Adapter M/F
Okay so if you bought a charger for your G1, MyTouch etc that uses the MicroUSB port then this converts it to the MiniUSB used on the mytouch Slide.
Don't know if it works for the Video out also since I did not buy that for my g1
but it works with all the other stuff I have for it.
SEARCH for: N82E16812200524

I would compare other sites too to see if you can get it for less.
I bought an adapter one day because I needed to charge my phone and only had a mini USB cable available at work (town of 8K people).
Buying micro cables is worth it, but get some retractable ones. Micro is the cable all phones will be using for quite some time.
Yep I know.
Well I use my old G1 charger at work and normally used it to charge my G1 or the Mytouch(nonslide), in the car also the V3razor car charger, and the tomtom GPS power on my other car, then at home I have the mytouch usb in the kitchen and then have the new one in the bedroom, all them have the cables so I don't have to carry the new cable all around. Just a little adapter. Beats the cost of having to buy a new car charger for both cars and new charger for work.
Here's a neat little charger I found!
http://www.scosche.com/products/productID/1907
Yeah, I bought a few of these Motorola adapters for $0.99 each on eBay. $6 total to keep one in the car, one at home and one at the office.
You can also get Micro USB cables themselves @ Monoprice for real cheap. I got 2 3ft, 1 6ft and 1 USB Car Adapter for about $6.
I get the point that there are many USB cables yet this little device if you are like me that have a G1, a mytouch 32B, v3 razor, Tmo Dash, ect devices that you already have the cables and stuff for this lets you convert those cables into the MT3G Slide.
Now the question that I have is will this work with TVOut? being that I dont have that for even my g1 I cant test it but if anyone does might be worth a shot.
I like the niceness of just switching a tip without the need to grab a new cable for my phones. Hey what can I say? im lazy.

mini to micro USB adapter

I just received these a few days ago and they work great. I have purchased a motorola one and another ebay one last year but both of them when I plug into my Evo 4g or Ev3d I have to move it around to charge. These have longer and more solid micro connector and I don't have to move them around at all. I bought 10 of them and all 10 work great. The only thing I don't like over the previous ones is that it doesnt have a string or rubber band to tie it to an existing mini usb chargers or sync cables.

Why even deal with these? Just get new micro usb cords from monoprice.

Because I have multiple AC chargers for my older phones that I can use at home and work to charge my Evo. Also being able to reuse my older car chargers is a plus. at $1 a pop it only makes sense to reuse those chargers rather than buying new ones. PLUS you can take the adapters out and it goes right back to a mini connector. Just in case you have other devices that still uses mini usb. Not everything is micro usb yet. And specially great if you have good quality chargers you can reuse than buy cheap chargers with cheap circuitry.
100% agree. Monoprice has these go on sale all the time for like $1 or $2 for a 3 pack so i buy them every time. I have tons of mini usb stuff from older phones, no need to buy all new chargers and you have the option of using it for multiple devices (mini/micro).
It also comes in really handy for PC's, i have a mini USB cable connected to my PC that just sits under my monitor for when i need to connect USB hard drives or any other sort of devices and then i just attach the micro adapter if i want to connect any micro devices.

Is the monoprice ones better? I know I bought a motorola one and a few ebay and some i think at daydeal but all of them the micro usb connectors were junk. Had a hard time keeping my phone charged up when I move it around.
I too have mini usb cables on all my pcs home and work along with wall chargers. You never know when you'll run out of battery power specially for us whos always flashing roms. lol.

OEM USB Cable

The Rezound has a very interesting Micro-USB port that seems to have the outer shape similar to Mini-USB, but with the Micro-USB guts. The cable that comes with the phone has a rectangular plug that seems a bit longer and fits perfectly into the phone's jack. In fact, its amazing... to get the phone connected to it, you have to push the connector in until it 'clicks' into place - very solid.
My wife's DINC suffers from a slutted-out socket that now barely works anymore due to the standard Micro-USB design that seems pretty fragile. Even though a standard Micro-USB fits into the Rezound's unique socket, it doesn't have the solid feel that the OEM version has.
Does anyone know what this newer style connector is called? I would like to find a couple more cables that are longer and feel that by using this type of connector, the Rezound's port should last the life of the phone.
Thanks in advance!!!

It's an MHL plug and there is more info in this thread

Thanks dude...
A normal microUSB cable will still get the job done. It's just put in the reverse as it is on the Incredible. The tabs need to be facing up. I got 3 OEM HTC microUSB cables off ebay for like $7 bucks shipped. And the odd shaped end is probably some proprietary HTC connector, same as they had with the HeroCDMA with the miniUSB.

No, it's a micro-A USB receptacle that supports MHL. There's a difference.
I would rather have the MHL cable... Feels more secure when plugged in..
Has anyone been able to find one on the internet or in store?
Sent from my ADR6425LVW
yeah the security of the MHL cable is worth not using a standard micro USB. for instance when you're using a car charger w/ a standard micro USB, the cable can tug a bit on the connector(depending on length of cable, placement of phone) and cause it to come loose & stop charging... but with the micro A USB(MHL) it's nice & secure and you don't have to worry about that happening.
Anybody have a part number for the OEM cable or best case know where to order it
The really annoying thing about the cable that comes with the phone is that you can't use it with any other micro-A/B USB ports. They seem to have intentionally shipped a cable that you can only use with this device, even though the device itself will take any micro USB plug. Thanks, HTC!

The incredible will charge with the shipped Rezound charger, granted it's got the same port. I've been using my Thunderbolt charger, kindle charger and now BB charger while at work. All get the job done.

I did say that any other micro USB cable would work on the phone. I have a charger from every blackberry I ever owned, the Inc charger, and a couple miscellaneous cables lying around. It's just that the one that comes with the Rezound now has to go in its own special pile of cables (all by itself) because I can't use it with any other devices. Did not try with the old phone, though. Interesting that you say HTC's physical mods to the micro USB port are the same on the Inc and Rezound, yet the Rezound ships with a proprietary cable and my Inc came with a standard micro USB plug. I'll check when I get home.
it does seem at least that yes, any microUSB cable will work with the Rezound for both charging it and connecting it to your PC.
for the most part, you really only need the MHL support if you plan on going through HDMI out, which you'd then need an MHL/HDMI adapter cable anyway.
the only benefit to the cable that comes with the Rezound is the "snug fit" bit. whereas, it'd be nice if they had a car charger with the exact same micro A USB end to it as i find that all standard micro USB car chargers aren't as snug and depending on phone placement/movement, the connection can get a bit 'loose' and sometime stop charging.
i used to use this motorola car charger but because of how the cable pulled, the connection would constantly come loose unless i used tape to hold it in place.
It's not an MHL port. It's HTC's proprietary ExtMicro-USB port first seen with the HTC Flyer. An MHL port is a standard 5pin Micro-USB A/B port that detects when an MHL adapter is used, and uses those same 5 pins to support HDMI output. If you look at MHL ports on phones like the Evo 4G and Galaxy S II, they are indistinguishable physically from standard Micro-USB B ports. HTC's ExtMicro-USB is compatible with 5pin Micro-USB cables and 5pin MHL adapters. In fact, if you look at the HTC MHL adapter, it's shaped like a standard Micro-USB plug and only has 5 pins. What's different about ExtMicro-USB is that it has some extra pins compared to standard Micro-USB and MHL. I believe it has 6 extra pins, for a total of 11 pins. Those 6 extra pins are not used for MHL, for the reasons stated above. I'm not certain what those pins are used for, but if it's the same as the older ExtUSB (which is compatible with Mini-USB), then those extra pins are used for analog audio output, for use with stereo headsets, etc.

The cable IS for the phone. You can use it to charge and sync. But the PORT can also be used to hookup an MHL adapter for HDMI output. That is IN ADDITION to charging or syncing via USB. The cable that comes with the phone just has a different connector yet is backwards compatable with any regular micro-USB cable.
I'm not sure why this is so confusing to people.
That being said...
Has anyone found a part number or where to buy cables with the non-standard connector?
I have plenty of micro-usb cables, and yes, they do work fine, but I am not confortable with how loose they are. WAY too much play. This especially worries me in the car.

Yea I have been trying to find this too. I was sent the Rezound as a CLNR for my Charge so I didn't even get the original USB cable that comes with the phone when you buy it. Sure the micro-usb cables work, but they feel pretty loose compared to other phones that are designed for micro-usb specifically.
ok guys this is NOT an MHL cable. as said before there is nothing special at all about it besides that it is a snugger fit. any micro usb will work with MHL and you still need the converter.

thanks. I will have to check this one it out but HTC is kind of jerking our chain with the part number. Turns out they used to same part number on all their later model cables. I ordered 3 different HTC OEM cables and they do work for charging and data but none of them had the snug snap-in feel as the one that came with the phone.

I know what you mean. I put the part number in and the one that came with the Inc kept coming up. This one looks like it has the same shape as the one that comes with the Rezound.
