Just moved from iPhone to i777, wanted to get ICS, but eneded up bricking my first phone by installing something meant for i9000. At that time I didn’t know Galaxy S2 has variants, just searched for S2 and got burned. My fault…..should have understood better.
I want to do it right this time so I have been reading about i777, ROMs, kernels, CWM.
I want to put SHOStock or CM9 ROM.
I know where these ROMs are and how to flash them using CWM.
But that’s where my confusion starts, that there are just too many sources and options and I don’t know which one is right.
So please advise.
How do I root?

Here's what you need to do:
1. Use Odin to flash stock UCKH7 with Root, available here. Be aware that doing this will require a full wipe, so do what you can to back up your sms/mms/contacts and other data. READ EVERY STEP CAREFULLY. Do not flash a kernel with Odin.
2. Now that you have root access, download Mobile Odin from the Play Store. Use it to flash either Entropy's DD or Siyah. This will install CWM Recovery.
3. Boot into CWM Recovery and make a nandroid backup.
4. Use CWM to flash SHOStock or CM9.

Is there a relation between which ROM will work with which Kernel, I may be wrong but I got the impression, depending on which ROM you are putting, you should have a kernel that supports it.
Also it seems like, ShoStock has its own variation of entropy, named cherry picker.

Agree with matts post just like to add that you can get the free mobile odin here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1347899 to flash the kernel so you dont spend any money. download file, extract, move apk to sdcard, use root or file explorer locate and run the apk. follow instructions on flashing a kernel

Sometimes there is, but it seems like most of the ICS kernels are interchangeable. Just try out each kernel for a few days...once you have CWM, switching kernels is no big deal. When switching kernels, though, it's always wise to flash jivy's Kernel Cleaning Script just before flashing a new kernel.
Can you use CWM to flash kernels as well ? I thought they always have to be done using ODIN.
May be I underestimated CWM, I thought it was for ROMs and zips only.

u can use mobile odin or cwm but its just a matter of preference you just had to use mobile odin at first to acquire a cwm enabled kernel but pretty much you can flash everything in cwm as long as its specified to be cwm flashable zip kernels roms and modems and such
edit: the free mobile odin only lets you flash kernels btw its the premium version that lets you do everything without going to recovery

You don't seem to have a firm grasp on all this. Maybe you should do some more reading before going further...
Anyway, here's a brief explanation:
A kernel is the underlying core of the operating system; it is how the OS interacts with the hardware.
A rom (the proper term is actually firmware, but nobody uses it) is basically the whole user interface; it's the part of the OS you see. When you flash a rom, you're flashing everything, including a kernel.
Like I said before, you never want to flash a custom kernel using Odin. Doing so will trip the phone's flash counter, and this will show up if you ever have to take the phone in for warranty stuff.
The reason it's ok to use Odin to flash the stock with root package is that it comes with the stock kernel, not a custom one. Basically, once you're rooted, you shouldn't touch Odin again unless its to recover from a brick. Basically everything else can be done in CWM.

Yeah no problem. I would suggest that you wait a while before doing this. Read through all the stickies and guides to can find, and get more familiar with everything. Then after a couple days, go for it.

I remember mine, read and re read the guides 3 to 5 times before I even touched my phone that I had for only three hours before I got bored with stock lol. To op don't be afraid man this forum is here to help and the gs2 is a great phone

So I just need to go threw the root process, make a back up, and when I flash the ics ROM I choose, my wifi will be back?? Sorry for the noobish questions, I plan on rooting my sg2 as soon as I get home from buying it and I don't want to brick it... Any help is much appreciated!!! Thank you in advance!

You don't need any more of a guide than that. Don't worry about breaking wifi, that isn't a problem on any of the popular roms.
If you want a Samsung based ICS rom that works really well, I suggest ShoStock2. If you want an AOSP based rom, most people suggest AOKP. I haven't tried it personally.

You can flash almost any ROM with almost any kernel, but ZombieAss will boot and run recent i9100 based ROMs. As in, you can't use ZombieAss with the official ICS ROMs from AT&T. If you're on stock 2.3.4, you can go ahead and flash any ICS ROM from their threads as long as it's for our phone -- the i777. They should automagically flash an ICS kernel.
In short, use ICS kernels with ICS roms, Gingerbread kernels with Gingerbread roms, but any kernel with CWM can flash anything without trouble.
Just pick your ROM and go in my opinion! pretty much all of the ICS ROMs include a kernel that will include CWM. (exception being the ATT leaks, but i believe even the one built by Task650 includes a kernel with CWM)
Kernel for ICS ROMs
I use overclocked kernels by SebastianFM on Android Revolution HD ROMs. Combination of the two works best for me.
You can also check out faux123's released kernels. Also very nice work (with ZRAM)

Once you have CWM (any CWM), you can go pretty much anywhere without returning to stock.
People that complain about bootloops didn't know the most basic rule of flashing:
ALWAYS WIPE DATA IN CWM WHEN SWITCHING FIRMWARES! (usually no wiping needed when switching kernels though.)
Suggested order, in my opinion:
Flash a Gingerbread kernel with CWM, such as my Daily Driver for Gingerbread
Do a Nandroid backup of your current setup (Backup and Restore in CWM) - Enter CWM using the three-finger combo, NOT via ROM Manager
Once you've done a backup - flash something. If it's in these forums, it should be safe. I suggest reading the threads for various releases to get a feel for things. Don't ask what's best - that is a matter of taste.

DON'T use Odin from your computer! Using Odin trips the flash counter and that'll probably give you headaches later. Use Mobile Odin instead, you can find it here under Step 3a, it allows you to flash zip files (lite version is free, allows you to flash only kernels from the phone itself)

Read same thread. Steps 2a-d detail four different ways to root. I think you would do well to read the thread's OP in it's entirety a few times before you try anything.

There is one tar ball available for Entropy's daily driver kernel. It's the top one in the list of downloads, named DD_01232012.tar. If you flash it, you will increment the flash counter and invoke the yellow warning triangle on boot, but you can reset the flash counter and remove the yellow triangle with a usb jig, or if you install ICS on the phone, you can get the same result using chainfire's Triangle Away application. And by all means, read the full OP of my guides, and any other follow up information you can find, so that you will have a solid foundation for making decisions as you go forward.

Right now only my Gingerbread kernels have a .tar download available.
It is my opinion that no one should be going straight to ICS yet without already having some experience with kernel flashing/installing CWM/nandroiding their current Gingerbread firmware as a backup/properly testing custom firmwares, which is why only my Gingerbread kernels have .tar files. ICS on our devices is still too new.

Entropy, I've been wondering. Does your ZA Kernel work on the AOKP roms that Task has been porting over to our phones?
i dont think ZombieAss will work with non-Sammy based ROMs, but I haven't tried it

Thanks for all the help. I actually downloaded mobile odin, then used doomlords easy rooting tool, then flashed, I forgot the name but it was something like "one kernel to rule the all", flashed with mobile odin, and got CWM, then installed you current daily driver, made a Nandroid backup, and now I'm ready to flash. I had one more question, what is the difference between the regular Nandroid backup and the advanced? And should I be backing up regular, or the advanced way?

So after soft bricking my phone once today already I have now backed everything up so I don't have to redo everything when I undoubtedly mess something up again
I'm trying to overclock my s3 but I know I can't do this on the stock kernels, do I need to install a whole custom Rom or can I just use a custom kernel. If so how would I do this? Thanks

Hi, firstly if I was you I would read all of this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1827635. This will explain about the dangers etc of overclocking on our specific device. Then, do you have a custom recovery installed? Like CWM? If you do and if you understand all the risks associated with overclocking, then you would look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1709686 This is siyha kernel, I trust this developer a lot, I have used his kernels ever since he first released one for the galaxy s2 a couple of years ago. You should read the full OP, and if you feel you are ready you just download the appropriate kernel zip, as in make sure it is for the galaxy s3. Also, make sure you flash the right kernel for your android version, like an ICS kernel will not work with a Jelly Bean rom and the other way round. Then simply flash it in Clockworkmod recovery and slowly and safely play around. I can't stress this enough, only play around with things after you fully understand what it is and does as overclocking can cause hardware damage. I hope this helps you

you can either install a custom rom or just root your stock kernel. I tried siyah kernel before, it support overclocking and dualboot.

Download your kernel of choice,boot recovery select install zip from sd card,navigate to where you downloaded your kernel,select it install it,now re-boot system.........job done enjoy

Download Siyah kernel, the latest 1.7rc then flash it using Odin. Then you're good to go. Just read in general section. There's a guide by bala on how to OC/UV.

After reading over lots and lots of threads, I finally got up the courage to root my phone.
I followed these instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746181
I flashed the "Kernel + Modem + Cache + Rooted UCLE5 System Package" using Odin, downloaded Mobile Odin, and then flashed the safe Siyah 4.3.3 kernel w/o mic swap to avoid bricking due to the eMMc bug. Everything seems to be working fine. I have Superuser, Mobile Odin, and CWM Recovery.
My question is what are my ROM choices and how do I go about installing them?
I'f I'm reading the instructions correctly in the thread with the rooting instructions, I only have the three options for kernels in that thread and I MUST use a w/o mic swap version.
On the Siyah thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1592228, the only ROMs listed that work with w/o mic swap Siyah are Criskelo and UCLD3. Are these my only choices for ROM?

You can use any rom you want. It will come with its own kernel and overwrite the one you have

So this from the the first thread isn't true?

Just do as Pirate says and you will be fine. Dont worry about the kernel because the rom you want will have the appropriate kernel packaged in

it means that if you use an ALTERNATE kernel, which a lot of people like to do, then you must abide by those guidelines. all roms come packaged with a 'recommended' kernel....just flash one and you will see.

How do I do an EFS backup? I have searched this, but haven't found anything specific to this phone. Just want to make sure I am doing it correctly.
The next step is to do a FULL BACKUP. I did a backup in CWM Recovery. Does that work?
When I move the ROM to my phone, do I take the whole zip file? Is there any particular file(zImage?) I point to when flashing through CWM or is it the whole zip file?

Use any EFS Backup App
The next step is to do a FULL BACKUP. I did a backup in CWM Recovery. Does that work?
Yepp that is a Nandroid backup

Good choice for a first ROM. When you get bored with that Shostock3 is really nice but wait until 1.5 comes out. It has some fixes that will polish it up nicely.

Would going to SHOStock3 require a wipe? I understand that upgrading to new versions of an existing ROM usually does not, but since this is a different ROM it seems like it would require the full wipe.
What is the easiest way to retain as many of my settings, etc... as possible when doing full wipes? I have Titanium Backup already. Is there another program that will help me retain more?

Yes on the full wipe before flashing the new ROM.
What else are u trying to retain besides apps and their data? If that's all TiBu is fine

It would be nice if I didn't have setup e-mail everytime, but if I can keep my apps and their data with TiBu, that should be fine.

Once you get accustomed to it, flashing with a full wipe isn't too bad. Make a nandroid backup in case you decide to go back. And I would recommend you buy the full version of titanium back up to get the batch features, and support the developer. It is probably the most important app for those that flash regularly.
I can fully wipe and flash and have everything back up and running the exact same way it was in like 10 minutes. But I like the chance to start fresh
Before I go into flashing kernel I have a question to ask. Which kernel that is compatible to the att 4.0.4? Just want to make sure before I flash it through Odin Mobile Lite.

Your best bet is the Siyah kernel.

I have an i777 that absolutely refuses to allow CWM. I have tried Siyah kernel on both GB and ICS stock roms, as well as AJK kernel on JB stock from. I am far from giving up but this has caused me so much headache and I've never bricked a phone as much as I've done this. Needless to say, I've learned a lot but I have yet to figure it out. If anyone could offer some advice or things to try I certainly would appreciate it.
I am currently running stock 4.0.3 with Siyah 4.3.3 kernel.

Assuming your phone is in fully working condition, then there is evidently something you are missing in your understanding of how the phone works. The SGH-I777 is different in that the recovery is built in to the kernel, and *not* installed separately in it's own partition. From reading the above, I'm wondering if your are trying to install a separate recovery, or if you art trying to install ClockworkMod from the play store by installing Rom Manager?
To help you get through this, I need to know exactly what you are doing that is not working for you, in a step by step explanation.

The phone is pretty old, and not many people hang out here any more. I still check in every once in a while. You would get more attention in any forum if you post a new thread with your question, rather than necro-ing an old thread.

I assume you meant to type "Rom" manager? Rom manager should not be used on the I777. For reference, see the very top sticky thread in the Q&A forum (this forum) [A] Rom Manager ******WARNING READ THIS BEFORE******

All custom kernels built for the I777 come with a recovery either based on CWM recovery or TWRP recovery. These kernels are usually compatible with the stock system which matches their version number. Once you install the custom kernel to replace the stock kernel, you will be able to enter recovery and it will be CWM (or TWRP in a few cases).
For Gingerbread, you can do this without rooting the device, since there is a Siyah kernel for Gingerbread that is available in tar format that can be flashed with Odin. To do this, flash the I777UCKH7 full distribution, which you can download from the Download Repository (see the link in my signature), then flash the tar version of Siyah 2.6.14 Kernel. Flash each one in PDA. Without ticking Re-Partitioning. You will now be able to boot into recovery and you will have CWM recovery where you can flash many types of custom firmware.
Another route you could take is to flash the I777UCMD8 full distribution from the Download Repository, then use the Framaroot app with the Aragorn exploit to root the device, and then use Mobile Odin Pro, or Mobile Odin lite to flash the AJK v4.9 NoSwap kernel which is compatible with the stock system. If you need additional instructions on how to do that, just ask.

okay so I read through some of the threads and I still don't know how to fix my issue. I rooted my phone using Odin v 1.85 and used siyah 3.4.2. I did it successfully and everything was good. I then gave the phone to my cousin and he said he performed a factory reset to get rid of everything on the phone ( contacts ,etc). Now when I turn on the phone it shows the samsung galaxy display with the triangle and then the screen goes black and just blinks. It still goes back into download mode I just dont know what to do to fix the problem. I know I'm a noob but please HELP!!!
Development section. You'll find the stickies that show how to flash stock packages with Odin. Go back to stock to fix your issue. You should then be able to load a new kernel and flash a custom rom.
Oh, and never let that cousin touch the phone again.

You will need to root first. If you did not flash the stock plus root package already, flash that, and then install a custom kernel which has ClockworkMod Recovery. Then you can flash any firmware.
There is a good guide linked in my signature.

Thanks. I Used "Odin3 One-click Downloader I-777 UCKH7 Stock + Root No Bootloaders" to go back to stock.
I'm going to install Mobile Odin lite, I already found the flash kernel for the I-777. After installing both of these I should be good to flash the ROM of my choice by just putting the rom on the sd card right?

Flash a kernel with ClockworkMod Recovery, then boot into recovery and flash the firmware. Mobile Odin can't handle the CWM flashable zip format.
There is a Siyah kernel for gingerbread that would give you CWM so you could then flash a custom rom. It would be in the development section. Just make sure you grab the version for gingerbread and not ics

I assume you mean nandroid backup from ClockworkMod Recovery? No. It's mainly a space issue, where you want to store them, because they take up quite a bit of space, especially if you have several.

The general answer you will get around here is try them all. You can see what I like by looking in my signature.
I like both Shostock3 and the collective's rom. I don't think there is a bad rom on here.
