(Q) miui v4 tablet mode. - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So since miuiv4 is really just a highly modified ICS, can I enable tablet mode? I understand it may not look correct (and may fail altogether), but I'm willing to give it a shot... Entirely because I can and out of curiosity, of course.
I tried setting the dpi to 120 and that didn't work.
What other things could I try? I have searched far and couldn't find a definitive way.

Surely someone must know/ wants to take this on with me?

So I got it to work. Basically, it goes into tablet mode BUT with a LOT if dpi related F/C's, and there is no statusbar up top but a space down bottom where the tablet one 'should be'. Without this it's kind if useless. Also, the settings are all distorted and unusable. I wonder if some of this support has been removed from their codebase.. Maybe we should petition xiaomi to keep tablet support built in. Could be an amazing rom for tablets and largescreen devices (nexus, note, streak etc etc).

Sorry no one has replied to this yet,
I found this because I was wondering the same thing, I just bought a Gnex and came across ParanoidAndroid but I can't separate from MIUI haha.
Hopefully one day tablet mode will be built into MIUI V4
Maybe post this question in the MIUI V4 thread or on MIUI.US

this would be an interesting feature to add to miui 4

definitely would!

To you mind sharing how you enabled it? Is it just a case of setting the right DPI?

Any chance we can get a port of this awesome rom to our beloved vibrant? betadan.com/paranoid
Edit: Seems there are lots of viewers and no doers lol. So how about we collect our data of interest with a poll? Just answer the quick poll.

Looks rather neat honestly.
Yes that is what I meant lol, spell check for the win. I went to their site and looked at the devices supported and they had someone listed as an official Porter, but he said he could not help. I'm thinking we just gather a bunch of people who are also interested and see if we can't justify a reason for them to port it for us.

Dude, this makes me want a Galaxy Nexus even more... I can't see this working all to well on the Vibrant because of the lack of screen real estate... ROM looks sick though.. *sizzle* hawt!
Actually I think it would work just fine. I had added an early version of a tablet mod to my phone before and it worked fine for the most part.

Looks cool, but do any of you guys know if its been ported to the I9000 or even any other SGS device? Not the SGS2 but the original, if it has, it shouldn't be too hard to port it.

No I do not know that, according to the thread they are nearing the height of development and expect to be able to port it everywhere... Currently, only device they have taken it to is the Note.. This rom should catch on, I only threw that prior comment about screen size not allowing out there to get some attention.. Lol..

Yep, I understand. I was just saying that if it does get ported to the I9000, which if probably going to happen if it comes to the original SGS family at all, it won't take more than 20 minutes to port it, and thats with the upload time being like 10 minutes.

Ditto.. I have wanted something like this on my hardware since Honeycomb 3.0 but Google never released the source for that and the 3.0 ports for the Vibrant never made it off the ground... However, tablet mode on ICS implements UI elements from 3.0 and the API's and frameworks were released for 4.0.. This ROM is a stroke of genius with it's "Hybrid Mode".. My eyes are peeled with excitement!
Yeah hoping their next release is the milestone we need for a port. Just read o e of their nexus threads and their next release is supposed to be a game changer so keep your fingers crossed.

Guys, the Nexus S has been added under supported devices! They have a thread going over there!!
I'm not sure but I think the I9000 forums have a way of porting the Nexus S ROMS. Just hope I9000 gets it.
I was looking into it how they ported that Joy OS mod and Lewa OS mod but I have not had time to fully implement their techniques... They do seem to have ways..
Not everything can be done for us users but it would be great if this from would garnish some looks from some of our more seasoned devs..
I am considering rolling up my sleeves and messing with some packages on this one though if it is not picked up soon ...
why the hell not.. although....
That whole EU ICS error going around in the Cappy section is kinda scary though.. Very little coverage on these Vibrant threads outside of Moped mentioning it and one small topic...
That is the only thing that is freaking me out with flashing anything and moving away from my current setup...
The EU is a problem on vibrant also. If you go to the aokp thread you will see lots of people have gotten EU with the last build.

Yes, that is what is spooky about it.. Like I said earlier Moped_Ryder in our development section discussed his reservations about using any additional ICS rom in his thread for his rom due to the EU errors people with Vibrant and Cappys are having.. He also commented on a users topic who posted about a brick question in the Vibrant dev section which seems to be another EU error.
.. As I also stated earlier there is hardly any info/awareness outside of random posts here in the Vibrant section on XDA...
FYI
For anyone who gets a "reset phone" message on their Vibrant, whatever you do do not hit reset... Try restarting the device into recovery even with a battery pull without an external SD card plugged in.. I hear Odin back to stock is one thing to consider in case of these events or even using SlimIcs has proven to get the phone back up is but the internal sd may be gone so a etc/Vold.fstab editing may need to happen to boot off of external sd's...
Disclaimer... for anyone who had not read up on the EU errors Vibrant and Cappy owners are having, research it... EU stands for Encryption Unsuccessful and it seems too many data wipes may be the culprit.. many users have expressed going back to 2.2 and even Gingy in many cases, it seems to have less strain on our internal sdcards...
MP the developer of the Subzero kernel is also aware and looking into it perhaps being related to Kernel versions 3.X and up... This is something to keep an eye on folks... His effort is probably not a solitary one...
See more in these two guides...

find a dev whos willing to maintain it. as long it stays true to our vision and uses cm9 we'd give support, when we can. jesus/darknessys over in the s2's i9100 original dev section can set you up, add you to the maintainer list and maybe the other guys that did it already can help you out with something.

actually google took honeycomb and completely married it to ice cream sandwich, the two are one. ics on a tablet is the same that runs on a phone. theres a tiny switch in there that acknowledges a certain display-lenght treshold and then it drops the entire UI into tab mode. this was known for a longtime but unfortunately it trashes your phone. hybrid mode means we have hooks and rewrites sitting on top of ics aosp code, we recompiled the framework, and this stuff makes tablet mode more flexible - you dont get overlapping, apps wont be too small, you can adjust fontsizes, you can switch an app from mobileUI into tabUI and back. PA on top of it gives support for things that still break, it has a fixed market for instance, a fixed keyboard, a fixed launcher, etc. its an all-in rom for this kinda stuff.
battlekry leaving this is your hands as I wouldn't even know where to start.

What can I use the Lapdock for, now that I am on CMx?

The good old Smiley, to make the reading happier:
I am looking for suggestions.
What could I use my Lapdock for, now that I made the switch to CyanogenMod?
Is there a good solution for making the VNC'ed ARM Ubuntu (look for Ubuntu Installer in the Play Store) work better with the touchpad? Should I sell it? Is there a solution to make remote control apps such as TeamViewer or Splashtop integrate with the Lapdock's keyboard and touchpad? Is there any way to make the device switch to Tablet mode without rebooting? That would be rather interesting to see. By the way, the CM9 ROM I am currently running has got Landscape HDMI working flawlessly, so that should not be an issue...
PS: Please do not ignore this thread. Any suggestions are welcome! (Use your common sense though)

I've struggled with the same question on my photon.. If there's working hdmi rotation on your CM, you can still use it for typing out documents, etc. I also used the mirror mode to watch movies on a larger(than phone) screen in bed.
But eventually I just decided to go back to a blur rom and use ubuntop (which is awesome) while waiting for official ICS and someone hopefully porting ubuntu 12.04 to webtop..

I don't understand why canonical hasn't leaked that awesome ubuntudroid system they showed off.. there isn't an easier way to get feedback especially since webtop has died and windows 8 is pushing hard into that whole 'blur the lines' market

Maybe they are waiting for the unified linux/android kernel 3.4 this would most certainly make it easier to port and updates trivial.

Currently, I use it for watching movies as well, and I am looking forward to pairing a Wii Remote and/or a DualShock® 3 to my Atrix™, so that I can play some games such as GTA III and Shadowgun (Max Payne *-*) on the big screen.
I was happy with Blur until the day I ran into that tempting CM9 thread. I did not know what smoothness and responsiveness really were. Blur was the smoothest I thought it could ever get... But I was wrong, and now I have to choose between fluidity and Webtop.
I actually went back to Blur some months ago, but unfortunately, prolonged use of ICS can cause dependence. Believe it or not, I was pretty happy with Blur. Webtop was working flawlessly, I even had BackTrack installed, but then came the relapse: I could no longer resist to ICS. I am now back to CM9, and with it comes my dilemma...
I am looking for a way to use the Atrix™ as a more desktop-ish platform when docked (especially to the Lapdock). I believe the ideal would be Ubuntu through a local VNC client, or a remote desktop app, I just wish they would play nicer with the keyboard and touchpad...
Basically, something like a key mapper (easy-to-use, I am still unable to figure out WiiMoteController's key mapping scheme) for Lapdock's hardware. We could make a keyboard-powered Ouya!
What still concerns me though, is that games would not be optimized for it e.g. Minecraft PE, games where the camera angle for example, is controlled by dragging the screen, so it would have to be a really powerful, but easy-to-use key mapper, and since you can't have everything in life, I'm afraid I'm asking for much...

When the official Ubuntu for Android was announced, even though an Atrix 2 was used for the hands-on part, on the project's official hotsite... It was clearly an Atrix™ 4G standing there on the dock. The differences between our device's design and the Atrix 2's or the Defy's (Defy+'s) are not that obvious, but they are, indeed, noticeable.
You do know what that means, don't you? It means it is almost certain that our device will be on the first batch of officially supported devices!
I don't if the Atrix™ is still there, but if it's not, I can try to find the screenshot I took if you'd like.

I have never thought I'd say this but, "Please don't get off-topic". I'd appreciate it if this gets settled in a new thread or via PM.
Anyway, you said "stock UbunTop", I could be wrong, but I think it's either stock or UbunTop, which is a mod born right here on our neighbor forum, Android Development.
If yours is really stock, I suggest you get BackTrack from the BackTop project, I don't it's got aircrack built-in, and I was unable to install it, so unless you're an experienced hacker, don't get too excited with BackTrack's features, but my point is: It is amazingly faster than Webtop, it seems lighter, I used to be able to run more than 3 different apps simultaneously...
If yours is really running UbunTop I'm afraid I cannot assist you, since webtop2sd never worked for me and BackTop and WebtopMOD were the only I could ever manage to get working on my device...

I can answer this. What he meant is that you should use Paranoid. Paranoid is a rom thats an hybrid of a phone an a tablet, in short words, you can activate tablet mode for some apps, while some other apps still run in phone-mode, for the ease of use.
What I actually meant was to give a name and a designation, which I did.
Google paranoid android rom and you get the website, the website has a much better explanation then I could or should have to provide.
But yes in short it can give you a tablet UI on lapdock.

Actually, part of why people like Paranoid Android so much is because of the ability to not only change modes (tablet, phablet, phone), but also set per-application DPI, size, and modes to change how each fragment operates.
Example: Youtube uses two modes (phone/tablet), and I like the phone mode better. But, I can't use it. Even restoring a phone APK of Youtube results in the tablet UI. PA lets you define Youtube and make it act like a phone!
That kind of flexibility is very powerful, and useful until we get powerful, properly built tablet apps with all of the features we desire. A lot of work? Sure. Possibly worth it? Definitely.

like what Akkeresu said below, it's not only the ability to change modes(although that's what I want most). And plus, who says I wanted tablet mode since I already have it? -.- I want it to look and feel like a Nexus 7. Which is only possible with this ROM as far as I know.

Actually no. The developer of PA quoted this, "no, but someone else can. if you have cm10 you can have pa aswell. it would run right away, theres barely any adjustments to make on our side and aosp is the same on any device anyway, no matter if phone or tablet." So yeah, he said it doesn't really need much tweaking from their side. Just hope someone can just help out to make this happen..:good:

I can do this quite easily as already have done it once for the prime.
The thing is I really don't have the time to keep remaking it constantly and re uploading new nightlies so if you wait a bit longer for some of the bugs to be ironed out I will knock one up but then I will only make a new one once a month or so.

I 've been looking for a way to get the Nexus 10 UI on my TF201 for like a week. Ofcourse I ended up nowhere. I can get all but the <back> <home> <app switcher> buttons to get in the middle of the bottom, and the rest of the status bar on the top. So during my search i came across the capabilities of the PA Rom. Sadly, I then discovered that the rom is not available for the TF201. Was ready to post in the Q&A section for "how to get the nexus 10 UI on the tf201" but figured i 'd take a look at this thread, and just saw your comment.
so.. in a nutshell, unless you can point me to the right direction (another direction; a way to get the Nexus 10 UI on the TF201) i 'm bumping the request posed with this thread, and ofcourse thanks for your willingness to develop!:good:

Who wants cornerstone multi-window for AOSP

I've seen a little bit of talk about this now that we have some AOSP ROMs and personally would like to see this happen but I know that if I just go make a request to someone like the Cyanogenmod team I'll probably not get a response or just be told they're considering it and that's it(I could be wrong). So I'm making this thread to find out just how many people are interested in this and figure out how we should get a hold of whoever can make it happen.
I don't want to get a bunch of people to just start mass email/post/calling anyone into submission. These dev's are already doing a lot of great things for us and I don't want to ruin that. I would really rather give Google an idea of how many people want this feature or already have it through one of Samsung's ROMs and would like to keep it with AOSP so that maybe they won't give the AOSP dev's such a hard time.
So go ahead and chime in if you want multi-window for AOSP and if you know who we should get a hold of or have a good idea of how we should go about asking or if you're a dev who's tired of people always asking for features and just wants me to shut up.
In case you haven't seen cornerstone it's similar to Samsungs multi-window. http://www.onskreen.com/cornerstone/

No thanks. CM isn't going to risk it. Google allows CM to use their proprietary apps and gives CM users access to the market and other Google services. If multi-window modes are going to risk that relationship then I don't want it.

I understand that and I know that's why CM didn't pursue it before but I think that now that Samsung has gone ahead and made multi-window available it gives us a good precedence, especially if they start using it on more phones than the note 2, like the S3. I think the big thing would be making it only work for apps that specifically state that they work with cornerstone the same way that Samsung does. I know it's a small amount of apps right now but once it hits a certain point most developers would hopefully make it standard when they make their apps and the ones that won't play nice with odd screen sizes can be left to run full screen. I'm just hoping that if they implement it they can use the same flag in apps that Samsung does so that so that app devs have a little more of a reason to make their apps use it for multi-window on AOSP and sammy ROMs.
I haven't found an app that doesn't work. Haven't really tried with games but did check a few with no problems. It works Google should roll it out.

I think in this case Google is too worried about catering to the lowest denominator - ie. the people with smaller less known android phones rather than beasts like the S3/Nexus 4/DNA/Note 2 and their misguided complaints that their new device can't run the core OS properly.
I asked Entropy about it in IRC a couple nights ago but he said it really makes no difference even with Samsung implementing Multi window. I looked into cornerstone but it seems a bit outdated. It was last updated 10 months ago.

It hasn't be updated to work with Jelly Bean yet, they are still working off of ICS source.
Thanks slick_rick and imnuts glad to hear some input from a developer. I've done a little research and haven't found any JB ROMs using it so darn. Unless it gets updated or if anyone thinks that Samsungs multi-window can be ported to non touch-wiz roms. I should go see if I can get a hold of anyone at onskreen to see if they have any plans on updating.

[Q] Purchased an Optimus G, what's the first thing I should do with it?

So it should be here in a few days....I got it off contract, in case anyone is curious.
So what should I do first? I would like my interface to be as stock as possible. When I use stock devices, or one's that are close to stock (moto razr), I have a set up that I love. My Nexus 7 is perfectly tailored to my preferences.
So do I root and unlock immediately or would a launcher satisfy my crave for a stock experience? I also have read the auto wifi on/off feature kills battery....so should I NOT set that up (it's a feature I'd like to have)?
Also, I'm coming from a Verizon droid razr (not maxx hd pro 4 M...stupid moto). I loved Motorola's Smart Actions App and the ability to have multiple triggers for an action vs. just one. Will Tasker perform in a similar manner or is there a better app now?
While I'm sorry I don't have answers to most of your questions, I would suggest rooting and bootloader unlocking (assuming you get the phone on the older firmware that is still rootable). Right now there are no stock (I'm assuming you mean stock Android/AOSP) ROMs you can install, but really, the LG interface isn't far off and is really pleasant in my opinion.
Installing a launcher like Apex or Nova should do the trick though.
The reason I suggest unlocking though, as there have been devs who said they are working on AOSP Roms, and we will hopefully also see some N4 ports.
I don't recall setting up the smart WiFi feature... pretty sure WiFi stays on even with the screen off and I am happy with the battery.
First thing you should do is put a nice, protective case on it!

A week or so ago, I was in your position. I'd suggest first reading the stickied topics in the "General" and "Q&A" sub forums. That will provide answers to many of your questions as well as informing you of what's possible with the OG right now. Armed with that knowledge, I was able to easily unlock and root my phone as well as install TheBase 0.7.3 ROM which, among other things, removed nearly all the LG and AT&T bloatware. I was then able to improve the phone's camera with another tweak, and now have Google Now installed too thanks to xsMagical and the Nocturnal dev team.
If you poke around, you'll see that there's all kinds of things you can do, and the directions are pretty straigh forward and explained in plain language. It all depends on what you want, and how much time and effort you're willing to spend. As time goes on, we'll be getting more and more ROMs, inluding (hopefully) a stock JB one. Don't be afraid to use the "Search" feature. Good luck and happy hunting.

lol... Agreed. Although, I haven't done so...
I'm using Nova Launcher with the animations slowed down and aosp like screen transitions. I really get that aosp home screen feel out of it. Also, trying out status bar +. Really, not in a rush for an aosp rom at the moment with this setup.
If you're sure about keeping the phone I would root and unlock right away. Both are extremely easy. Unlocking is even a one click step if you use the $1 FreeGee app! On that note do not do any At&t updates, since it's been noted that the latest one patches the root exploit. Also, both rooms we have now are working great. I'm on Nocturnal's rom and loving it.
Good luck.

as someone in this forum said...i think they got it wrong, project butter is supposed to be on the inside not the outside"
this device is damn slippery. get something for that...Zagg or Clearshield help a bit. perhaps a bumper case. perhaps some double sided tape.
