[Q] SK17 radio/baseband on SK17i?? - Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini, Mini Pro, Xperia Pro, A

i'm unable to use 3g/umts on my current carrier due to the freqs differences SK17 uses 850, 1900, 2100 and SK17i uses 900, 2100...
my carrier is on 850/1900, there's any way to flash/change the radio (or baseband) to 850, 1900, 2100 on a SK17i model??

I bump, therefore i exist...

Dude, had you tried to change your apn? I am almost sure its an apn problem. Both phones are quadribands and by that they should work within any Carrier you choose.

SK17i type phones have 3G chip, that only uses specific bands, SK17a type phones another type chip.
You can't change that. If your shop sold this, you might go back to the shop and explain to them, they should change it for you, if it doesn't work in their region.

APNs only control 2G/3G/HSPA internet usage and where to connect. APNs are not related to 3G bands.

Thanks, but i don't really know why SE would make to almost exact devices, only with that difference, although they've done it before... -.-"
i got a motorola defy, and you can change the baseband (and the 3g/gsm freqs with it) so easily, there's an app, you just need root, in cm7 it's even on the device settings...

An app cannot change the baseband. Currently, it can only be done via Flashtool and official programs(Update Service).
At least, not on Xperia phones.

The frequencies cannot be changed. If the phone is set to work on these frequencies, it will work so.
Phone, which is made to work on 900/2100 Mhz, cannot work in 850 Mhz area, because the chip hasn't been built so.

[Q] Can frequencies be changed by changing firmware

I recently switched to Mobilicity from Rogers...but the irony is that I can't use my lovely X10 on Mobilicity. Mine is X10a, and I recently flashed it to X10i (although I didn't know it will switch to X10i, but it did) using forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=825201 tutorial.
Ok, the big question is that can I somehow manage my X10 to work on the frequency Mobilicity is providing. Following are the lines from wikipedia.
"Mobilicity uses the UMTS IV frequency band, also known as AWS, to provide UMTS (with HSPA) service.[11] Using this band, user equipment transmits at 1710–1755 MHz, and receives at 2110–2155 MHz. This is the same frequency as Wind Mobile and Videotron in Canada and T-Mobile USA. Like WIND, they do not have a GSM network."
"The Xperia X10i uses GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 and UMTS/HSPA 900/1700/2100. The Xperia X10a uses GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 and UMTS/HSPA 800/850/1900/2100."
Please be easy on me as I am a newbie

the carrier is not going to change the frequency for you.. As it looks Videotron and Mobli will survive Wind took a hard hit just today. The CRTC and Industry Canada are getting pressure to reopen the ownership debate. If that falls though Rogers will add data to chat-r and seal the fate of Wind. Then you can simply switch over and be fine.

ok, I will wait for a month or so. I guess North American handsets always had problems. I remember I took couple of handsets to South Asia 5 years ago and they werent working there, but their handsets worked in North America.
Btw, my current plan is 35+tax and it includes.
Unlimited Incoming & Outgoing
Unlimited Text (Global and domestic included)
Unlimited Long Distance for North America
Unlimited Data
Caller ID, Call waiting, Voicemail, Call Forward, 3 way calling
I doubt Rogers or its subsidaries can offer such a plan.
Btw, I am a webdeveloper who wants to get into mobile development scence as well. Any guidance will be appreciated as I am a complete newbie when it comes to mobile development.
It is funny to tell but my x10a is not working the right way
The 3G working bands are as the service menu says:
umts_bc1, umts_bc4, umts_bc8
instead of
umts_bc1, umts_bc2, umts_bc5, umts_bc6
So I can't use the 3G anymore that's because in my country none operator uses the bands that my phone has, It seems my x10a phone uses x10i bands now.

Possible to change radio frequencies?

I have a Rogers locked x10. I believe it operates on the 850/1900 frequencies. I was thinking of unlocking and switching to Wind Mobile which works on the 1700/2100 frequencies. From what I have read, I believe the T-mobile x10's already run on this frequency. Is this software or hardware related? Am I able to flash a file for the phone to use the needed frequencies?
I'm sure this has been asked before, however I dont think I am asking the right questions in the search.
Thanks for any help.
Cheers.
Tim

With the GT-I9100, you'll ONLY ever get Edge on T-Mobile USA. Doesn't matter what you flash. The phone simply doesn't have the hardware to receive 1700mhz UMTS, which is one of two necessary bands (the other being 2100mhz UMTS) for 3g/4g on T-Mobile USA's network.
The GT-I9100 will only ever get HSPA/HSPA+ on AT&T's network in the US. I'm sure of this - I have an I9100, and am on AT&T.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Nope. Not short of getting an AT&T account just for that phone, anyway.
...
(sorry, here comes some snark)
Unless you're comfortable cracking open the phone, ripping out the antenna, replacing it with one that will receive 1700/2100 mhz UMTS, decompiling the OS, tweaking it to recognize the new frequencies, and recompiling.

You can either get a USB jig or flash a stock kernel back. Try a search. This has been asked a CRAPTON of times.

Just found this forum... have the exact same issue. I have the GT-I9100 Intl version from Australia and now in the USA for a couple of weeks using T Mobile.
The dude behind the counter asked if my phone was unlocked, which it is. I told him that it supports Quad Band UMTS 850, 900, 1800 and 2100mhz and he said I'd get full HSPA+ reception on the 2100mhz band...
Sure enough, it's only Edge. I THINK there might be a setting in the Device Config (on keypad * # * # 197328640 # * # *) and possibly change something to use the US 2100mhz or something like that...
I can live with using Edge, but just interesting whether it's just a config setting that needs to be changed in the handset itself to pickup a different connection type for US 2100mhz bands?

I9100 only gets Edge on T-mobile USA because it doesn't receive 1700 WCDMA. If you want 3g/"4g" you'll have to go to ATT or another carrier that uses the same frequencies...
T-mobile USA uses AWS for high speed mobile internet, which REQUIRES BOTH 1700 & 2100mhz WCDMA. One is used for uplink, the other for downlink. Only receiving one of them won't work, which is why you're only getting Edge.
Dude behind the counter is wrong and doesn't seem to know how AWS works.
EDIT: BTW, UMTS and WCDMA are somewhat interchangeable in this instance.

You can check gsmarena for the specs: http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_xperia_ray-3972.php
As far as i know, you don't need to worry about the firmware, as there doesn't appear to be country or carrier speciffic versions of the baseband.

Yes, but the ST18i and ST18a are different precisely because their hardware (radio) can only operate on certain frequencies, i.e.
3G Network
ST18i - HSDPA 900 / 2100
ST18a - HSDPA 850 / 1900 / 2100

[Q] Which LTE Frequency band is my phone connected to

I've searched all around the web and I cant find a way to check what frequency band my phone is using
for Samsung phones just dial *#0011# and you can find that info, iPhones also have a way, but I haven't found a way to determine this in my Xperia Z2.
does anyone knows any way?
any app or something?
terminal command?

note: I want this because my carrier (Orange DO) is going to change their LTE band (and they're doing some test sometimes) and I want to know which band are they testing.

Sorry haven't been able to work with any Orange users to map out their LTE bands yet. If you get a phone that can access the *#0011* menu (or can grab a friends phone whose can) hit me up at [email protected] and I'll be able to bake support for Orange into the application.
I want to add support for all the Canadian and UK carriers but it's been hard to find volunteers in other countries to work with.

I don't know the exact UL/DL frequencies right now, but orange is using band 3 for LTE, and 900 for 3g / GSM / EDGE
the point is, they're on a process of migration from that LTE band, they're waiting (among other things I guess) for authorization to complete migration.
What I wanted to know is exactly which bands they're testing, because I've used a nexus 5 D820 (which lacks band 3) and often it gets connected to the LTE and a friends phone says it is still connected to band 3 (Galaxy S4 i9505 using *#0011#)
So there's no way other than *#0011# for Samsung Phones to get that Connection Data? not from data gathered
and..
actually I'm from Dominican Republic

According to wikipedia you are probably using band 3 frequency 1800mhz
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_LTE_networks#Americas
P.S. Damn your country has so many different bands lol.

And i forgot to mention that a friend has a Galaxy S4 i9505 (LTE) which lacks of band 2 and band 4, and using *#0011# says its using band 3
So, basically orange is using 2 LTE bands, one is obviously and oficially band 3, but the other one (probably band 4 but i want to make SURE) is on testing.

This works indeed
But on stock based ROM you can't write into system folder due to RIL protection.
So either you create a cwm flashable zip to install this app in recovery, or you use a custom kernel with deactivated RIL.
