[Q] Anyone working on AOKP ICS for our phone? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

I just bought this phone the other day, after having an HTC Inspire for over a year. I really enjoyed the benefits of it being a sister phone of the Desire HD, such as really phenomenal ROM development.
I know that there aren't any sources released for this phone, but after using LordClockan's Ice Cold Sandwich, I just can't get used to this TouchWiz.
If anyone has started a project, I can help out with anything that I can.
If not, would anyone here like to try & help out?
My ROM building knowledge is non existent, but I'm dedicated to get this going.

I hope it's comming!

Have you tried the ICS roms that we DO have? They're not AOKP; but they run the AOSP stock apps and they've been themed well enough to be pretty damn close -- all while maintaining full s-pen capability, which is something even the CM9 folks can't claim yet (they don't have button functionality)...

I hate to disagree but they arent even close (no offense to current devs, this isnt their fault).
S-pen functionality needs either the source from Samsung or a new driver has to be written from scratch, which isnt worth the time or effort considering that Samsung likely will soon be releasing source for ICS (usually a few weeks after the OS is officially released). And, if he rumors are true, ICS should be official soon (however, to be clear, I dont believe ICS is coming any time soon).
The reason these other roms have S-Pen support is, surprise surprise, they COPIED large sections of code from the stock leaked release, where, conveniently, everything ALREADY WORKS!!
Stock apps will almost always work on ANY rom with little to no modification required, regardless of whether they are from an AOSP rom.
The current roms are heavily based on the leaked ICS rom with only small tweaks universal between nearly all roms, things like themes, lockscreens, sounds, animations, etc. are all pretty simple if you know what you are doing (something admittedly, I have not personally built a rom but Im very familiar with the process).
When Cyanogen (or possibly AOKP, Im not familiar with their roms and how they are developed) is released, we will begin to see true rom development begin to happen. Until there is source code from Samsung, we will continue to see roms with Touchwiz all over them.
To show you how easy this is, here is a link to have a bot build a rom for you for any of the Galaxy 1 or 2 phones.
http://romkitchen.org/
Click your phone choice (Galaxy 1 or 2 currently, the Note is NOT supported yet).
Click Generator in the upper right hand corner.
Use the six tabs across the top of the page to choose your Modem, Kernel, Theme, stock apps, etc.
Of course, this only gives you a base to work with, from there, its pretty easy to swap in or out what you want.
Think about it like this, I can give you a copy of Windows already pre-configured for your PC and them or customize it just by changing some registry entries and including the data files (wallpapers for example). The included drivers would be pre-built meaning that 'I' didnt actually write them, nor did I change much in Windows, all I did was provide the files containing the data and changed a few settings to link to the files.

Not entirely true. I know some ICS roms that have been hacked to death to get at least partial functionality.
I'm thankful that some devs have taken their time to do what they have done, but what I am looking for hasn't been done.
AOKP is like AOSP, but more tweaks are added.
[edit] As for myself, I could care less about S Pen support. I haven't even used it, nor do I think I ever will. I got this phone for the monster sized screen.

I appreciate the explanation, but you're not telling me anything I don't already know. I was just saying that our current roms have been themed/tweaked well enough to look like AOSP, so they're not that bad; and, you don't really have to deal with touchwiz annoyances anymore if you don't want to -- trebuchet, apex, and nova all work well.
CM9 or AOKP they're not, but they're exceptional given the single source-less leak we have right now... and they certainly blow away stock touchwiz GB! lol

Pen apparently works in the CM9 build for the international note. Haven't looked at the source myself yet, but it is probably just the standard wacom driver.

AFAIK, they haven't gotten the button to work yet, but it's promising.

Its going to take a lot kf time and effort and prob a group effort to get aosp or aokp roms for our phone. I believe the reason skyrocket and 989 have it is because they have had a lot of devs working together for long time on it. I can get a booted aosp rom hut no sound no camera no data. So theres a lot of work needed to be done

I thanked your post, not because it was in any way useful but absolutely hilarious!
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but that will most likely never happen. I'll trade my wife's iPhone 4 for your Note though, I'll even throw in a dead iPad!
Well, truth be told, there is not a solution yet.
BUT, if you wait a bit, a rom called MIUI will likely be developed.
Let me explain...
Cyanogen is a team that develops 'clean' Android roms for many devices. This means, no bloat and has ALL of the features that Android has to offer, enabled (with exception to features that would not be applicable because the phone simply does not have the hardware - for example, if your phone does not have NFC, Cyanogen wont support it for your device and they simply remove all of the code related to this). The result is, the most feature rich version of Android (and most up to date as they do keep up with Google's releases) with the least amount of crap. This keeps the phone lean and clean.
Now, since Cyanogen is open source, they make the source code available for other rom developers to modify what they have done to create different experiences. This allows developers to start with a feature rich rom and develop on top of that to add their own 'flavor' to their work.
One such 'flavor' is MIUI which strives to make your Android device as Iphone like as possible. While it isnt perfectly matched to the Iphone, its moderately close.
Dont get me wrong, I for the life of me am baffled as to why someone would want their Android phone to look like an Iphone but that is what MIUI is there for.
(BTW, if I am wrong about MIUI, feel free to mention it, based on everything I have read about it however, the impression I got was to theme an Android OS to look like IOS).
However, we have a long way before this happens. Rom developers have barely figured out how to do anything with this phone.
To my knowledge, there is only 1 custom rom (Saurom) and it isnt really all that custom from what I can see. All it seems to have is enhancements from the stock rom (overclocking, cwm, att bloat removed?) but in essence is just a more efficient streamlined stock rom.
There is also only one custom kernel that I can see that again, is the same as the stock kernel but allows for overclocking (and I think I read that the davlik cache size was increased).
Once Samsung releases the source code for the Note, we will start seeing alot more rom development, at which time Cyanogen will jump on board and start making roms (using the source that Samsung releases for things like drivers) and once Cyanogen has a relatively stable rom, MIUI will likely take the Cyanogen source and tweak it.
Very convoluted I know but probably wont be seeing anything earth shattering until the source code is released from Samsung.

AT&T Official ICS ROM vs Custom ROMs?

I had started a thread I just got the official ICS Upgrade
In that thread some had indicated that a custom ROM should
be used and not the the official ICS Upgrade from AT&T.
In an effort to not get that thread of track i will ask here:
What is the real difference with the AT&T Official ICS ROM and the Custom ROMs?
I am fully aware AT&T has loaded a bunch of junk in,
and I went through and disables and deleted much of it.
But what truly is so awful about it?
And if it truly is so bad, what is the "Correct" ROM to use?
Thank you
No such thing as correct or incorrect, it is all personal taste. Some might like one ROM over another. Does that make it better than another? Nope.
Take cars for example. Some people like to leave it stock. Some might like to increase its performance and add engine modifications. Some might like it to handle the roads better so they might upgrade its suspension. Others might like to change its appearance and paint it and add body-kits. Is one car better than the other? Depends on who you ask.

This thread will get real out of hand.
But before it dissapears. the main reason most of us say its bad, is with the history of At&t's releases. They mess stuff up, have issues within the kernals, and a big BIG issue with them right now that w/o source, we dont know if its fixed.

not taste/opinion in the fact(from their history) that the coding is a mess. and broken everywhere.
You come to a developer forum to run fully stock?
That's what goes through my head when I see people afraid of flashing.
If you want the AT&T firmware at least wait for somebody to post a debloated version since your going to disable them anyways or actually learn how to do it yourself. Since you have access to the forum with so much information.
Maybe take it 1 step further and grab the AT&T firmware and customize it to your liking, you don't even have to post it just use it.
This isn't a great thread cause Versus threads go nowhere...

I can appreciate people wanting to customize their devices.
That being said customizing just for the sake of customizing is not really
of interest to me; Increased functionality or an issue being corrected is.
So the real question for me would be what real issues with the
Stock ROM get corrected? and what Real features get added.

There are many different things. Mods add to the functionality of the phone. Take the 14 toggle mod for instance, no need to enter settings to change common things. Skip tracks with volume buttons. You can also increase battery life with various kernels by UV/uc. It allows you to make your phone function and do what you want it to. The stock firmware is too limiting in this ability

Of course there is an increase in functionality or else why would devs create custom ROMs. What each ROM has that differs from others are listed in their respective threads. Check it out and see if any interest you. If you are satisfied with stock, stay stock. Not a big deal.

Honestly, I used to hang around here for the community - but that's quickly turning me into a simple lurker.
I'm extremely interested in the developers work. However, I find that the stock factory firmwares are every bit as good or stable as anything that gets turned out in the dev areas. The stock ROMs also do everything I need and want. Plus, I don't like AOSP Android, and that seems to be what everybody is focusing on these days. Also, the 3rd party roms generally have too much changed, removed or added for my tastes.
Edit: Oh, and while I generally like the OEMs code, I have no problem using a good 3rd party kernel.
AT&T releases are typically buggy. The developers here either fix those bugs, or use firmware bases from the international version that are more robust and stable. It is too early to know what bugs this UCLE5 release may contain, but the original AT&T UCKH7 firmware had lockscreen security issues, the official AT&T update UCKK6 broken bluetooth hid and serious power management issues. The AT&T ICS leaks leading up to this version, UCLD3 and UCLD4 had a very serious flaw in the kernel which caused several people with the I777 to lose their device due to eMMC chip damage. Since the kernel source code for the current official AT&T UCLE5 has not been released yet, it is not possible to confirm that the kernel supplied with the UCLE5 release is free of this serious issue. Therefore, it would be advisable to either not run this firmware, or use a modified rooted version in which the kernel is replaced with a known safe kernel.

you definitely haven't been running an android device if you say this (marked in BOLD). Considering the fact that for our device in particular, they have released BS that is not only buggy as hell, but has bricked a ton of devices. I think you should probably do a little research before making such bold comments.
I got board enough to try the full LE5 including kernel. So far better than D4 and previous ics. Tegrak works as it does on the 9100 base kernels so that tells me i777 is catching up or has caught up. Could be just odex, but all benchmarks higher than on any of the aokp or 9100 sammy roms I've tried.
I'd like to see someone customize this if it remains stable. I've added 15 toggle from other roms, but I jusy like having firmware meant for device.

I've been running Android devices and flashing firmwares since 2009.
I also haven't seen any of the bugs or issues mentioned on this forum. Doesn't mean they don't exist. The stock 2.3 rom that came with my GS2 from AT&T was amazingly, impressively stable compared to what came with my Vibrant, or even ANY of the community roms for it.
UCLE5 bug:
unable to use wide image for wallpaper, so you can only get a fixed wallpaper, not a scrolling wallpaper. This bug was present in the leaks, and has not been fixed in the official release.

As droidstyle said, customized stock roms are basically, well - stock based roms with build.prop/init.d tweaks. I like to go back to stock deodexed Verizon rom and debloat/tweak the rom myself because that's where I find the most fun. Custom Touchwiz roms seem to take that fun away from me

Most of which are snake oil, like a lot of performance tweaks devs claim to put in.
I say we open up a donation thread so we can get Team Synergy on board!! Their roms are sooo bad ass!! LOL Just kidding guys! :silly:

As many as possible, it's called variety. I'm busy and I don't want to do the mods myself.... I like donating to devs to do it for me...that's why most of us are here.
Also one of the great things about Synergy for the GS3 was the nightly builds. Again, I didn't have to do the work myself, received nightly updates/tweaks and simply donated to compensate for their time and work.
Personally, I figure the more devs working on the Verizon Note 2 the better regardless of what they use as a base for their ROM.
You can only do so much with a zip rom. Nightly builds are pretty ridiculous for zip roms. If nightly builds actually did something notable, the rom would be completely rewritten from scratch within a month.
It simply doesn't happen and is misleading.
Here is what I have seen from nightly builds of zip roms:
1. Nothing changes from one build to the next.
2. Things are broken, then fixed, broken, then fixed. However, nothing is actually accomplished.
3. Why are we calling them builds? They aren't building crap except maybe an apk or two.

I totally agree with you. I had the GS3 and ran pretty much every ROM available for it while I had it. Nothing against Team Synergy, but their ROM always had some type of issue or another. Which I thought was insane for a stock based ROM.
And then the nightlies started happening and like you said, things would break and then be fixed, etc. I finally just gave up and started running CleanROM and Beans. Both were more stable and to be honest, performed better.
I never got the lovefest for the Synergy ROM on the GS3, but that's just me.

I also don't have the time to do this myself either. I work 50 odd hours a week and have two kiddos. I also have no idea what I am doing. I would love to learn more about all of this. If someone can put up a link for a good starting point to learn that would be awesome.

Nobody forces you to download nightlies. I do agree that at some point the nightlies can start doing more harm than good but it's up to the end user to know when it's time to get off the train. I've only ever had good experiences with devs who produce nightlies. If I felt like I was getting a service from nightlies, I donated, if not, I didn't. Simple as that.
Whether you feel forced to download them or not is irrelevant. They are quite pointless.
So if these arguments hold up, there should only be two or three roms per device. Touchwiz (or whatever ui is used by the manufacturer), AOSP or AOKP. Everything else is just tweaks and build prop edits. Not understanding the arguments here. Especially from other devs.

Google Edition Rom?

Good Morning to you all!
Sorry if this has already been posted but I couldn't find much of anything on this topic. Does a "Google Edition" Rom exist for the EVO 4G LTE? I know we have the AOSP and AOKP roms but this is something I've wanted to ask for a while. I love the pure Google experience and I just have to wait about a year until i can upgrade to a new phone like a Nexus.
Thank you again for taking the the time to read this and for all the awesome work all you Developers put in for making this awesome phone even better.

I'm with you on that one. Not sure why anyone with knowledge of rooting (who doesn't mind a voided warranty) would want to buy a GE phone.

Imagine having a GE ROM that had added functionality and customizations. Then, go download one of our CM/AOKP/DU ROMs. - imagination realized.
Or, put another way, take one of our AOSP ROMs, strip away functionality and customization, and you have a GE ROM.
Is that what you're looking for?

What do you think would be a good solid AOSP Rom to either behave like a GE Rom or better I've only tried the CM Rom and the Xlyon Rom back and forth and couldn't get the feel I was looking for.

You could always try Evervolv. That's probably the closest to AOSP, that is, with the least customization.

Not true. Not trying to insult any devs in any way, but AOSP roms for anything other than a Nexus are hacked together using core binaries from other devices when necessary. There is never such a thing as a bug free AOSP Rom, except for a Google device and/or Google edition.
The Google edition roms on the other hand, were compiled by HTC for a device that they know in and out. Unfortunately, this is one of those times when "the vendor knows best", simply because of sheer resources and hardware documentation.
It would be possible to port the GE roms if you guys ported the GPE kernel and used that to port the rom, like Zarboz and newtoroot did for the DNA.

I can't say.
For the DNA it was extremely simple (but zarboz is a boss so he would've gotten it anyway) since the two devices are almost identical (One and DNA).
But the fact that you guys have a 3.4.x official HTC kernel should help.

You would be surprised at what shortcuts OEMs take too.
Just because they have the resources doesn't necessarily mean it's cost effective, or that their software engineers have the time, to redo everything from scratch for each device. It's usually much easier to make it for one and then adapt that copy for use on other devices. I actually found this site thanks to htc's sloppy implementation of hdmi on the original evo. According to them it was impossible to fix until Toastcfh and Netarchy did just that and rewrote their kernel from scratch (iirc).
If you think about it, this site probably wouldn't even exist if OEMs made good software. They often do have access to proprietary drivers and documentation, but most of that is slowly getting open sourced anyway.
That type of reasoning is a fallacy because more often then not OEMs are just too plain cheap to do things properly. They just need to hit their deadlines. So your only real options are to either buy a nexus device, or invest a little time in helping fix any issues that you may find.
Someone please correct me if I'm thinking of the wrong device, but I believe it was the htc TyTN2 where htc didn't even bother to include a fully functional display driver because they didn't want to pay the license for it.

Have you ever used one of the IRC builds of cm10 or cm10.1? They're more stable and are more feature rich than the stock ROM that shipped with this device or any of the updates that they were gracious enough to let sense users download over the air. The 3.0 kernel was seriously stable, but the 3.4 kernel is (nearly as) stable _and_ leaves more RAM for your silly animation effects and whatever. It's based on the reference kernel for the chip set, if I'm not making an arse of myself. So pick a build. I know 1/16 was an awesome cm10, and like I said in another topic I had 191 hours uptime on the 7/23 cm10.1 before I rebooted to rule out the ROM when I was having data issues(it was the network) </rant>

Not saying they are perfect and neither am I taking sides. But the fact of the matter is that AOSP is ported using binaries made for other devices and other hacks and so is nearly impossible to make it 100% compared to vanilla nexus roms. Issues are inevitable. And those same exact shortcuts you stated apply to and are no exception with AOSP ports like CM or evervolv. They also commonize (not a word, I know) as much as possible. They group devices like all the d2 and all the jflte, or even by processor like s4_common, etc under one common branch to make it easier for themselves to maintain.
I know I'm not gonna win here because of several things, namely being that I'm taking the "wrong" stance from the majority's point of view. But I just felt adding my 0.02 would help with the OP's original question.

Ha! That was my first smartphone! I first signed up on xda (under a different name) when that phone launched (I got it as the att tilt) so that I could run manila and then android on it! That display driver issue was so frustrating. Sorry for ot, but I haven't thought about that in ages.

It's not accurate to say the binaries are made for other devices when the devices are all basically the same. The MSM8960, for example, has it's own binaries, but the same chip is used in a range of devices from the Evo LTE, Blackberry Z10, One X (LTE), One XL, Windows Phone 8X, LG Mach, Moto Droid Razr M, Droid Razr, Razr Max, Atrix HD, Incredible HD, Xperia GX TL SX & V, Galaxy S III... the list goes on
The binaries all of those devices use were developed for the Qualcomm devkit I've linked below.
When you're working with a sense ROM versus an AOSP ROM there are many differences in not only appearance but the framework as well, but once you start getting down to the kernel level the hardware is all basically the same. Where we have the advantage over OEMs is that most companies know it's counterproductive and a waste of money to go after enthusiasts who borrow their binaries from one device to use on something else. If an OEM did that they would be sued in a heartbeat.
https://developer.qualcomm.com/mobile-development/development-devices/snapdragon-s4-msm8960-mdps
edit: probably actually this instead, but same difference: http://shop.intrinsyc.com/products/dragonboard-members-only
To digress back to the OP's original question though, the google edition One is basically just the one with AOSP on it. If you can find a pure AOSP ROM it'll be the exact same thing.
Thanks for the info I'm really thinking of seeing if i can try and make my own ROM and plus I've always wanted to do so hopefully it all goes well. Why don't you just build AOSP? You can use the CM kernel and pull the relevant vendor files from an existing AOSP ROM (or find an up-to-date github with them).
That way you don't have to worry about having the extra customizations, but you'll still have a kernel built from Qualcomm source along with the ROM.

I have tried a lot of ROMs and I find these devs do a much better job than stock ROMs yes you have some bugs in some but the always work them out cudos to the devs I'm just glad they still support my device and having gabe up on it

[Q] Any rom 4.0 (or higher) that isn't seriously broken?

As far as I can see, there really isn't any rom out there that will give you Android 4.0 or higher, and that still lets you use the video cam. I'm not too big on recording but I still consider it to be a very integral part of a phone, so of course I don't want to omit on that feature.
Now, ICS has been out for quite some time and the official Android iterations have already moved far ahead, but the latest stable release I can find for Atrix seems to be CM 7. Android 2.3.7. And that was in June 2012. Seems like stone age. Is it really this hopeless or am I missing something?
Lots of apps require at least 4.0 so being stuck on 2.3 feels really frustrating. Any tips on functional roms that aren't missing too many important features?
Wow, after the huge rage over Moto deciding to leave the Atrix behind and all the dozens of threads about that, there are still questions like this?

I started using smart phones two years ago. It took me quite awhile to discover the Atrix, so you could say I missed out on that outrage. I just bought a used Atrix and had hopes of updating it to at least 4.0 but it seems difficult to achieve, despite that a long time has passed. Can it really be that hard to get the recording to work?
Yes, it actually can. Reason being non-existent drivers for proprietary hardware. Sadly this device has been discontinued, despite its great hardware potential, and there is and will be no support for it past GB. So we're left with having to "invent", figure out and piece together stuff on our own.
It's all explained in great detail in many other threads.

Okay, I can buy that, makes sense.
Well, I've managed to find at least some roms at 4.0 and above, so I will try out the most promising ones, starting with AvatarRom and AtrICS. Functionality over "better stats" and all that. And then move on from there. Taking photos and recording is something I do on a regularing basis so it's vital that those parts actually work as intended, other parts I might overlook easier.

AtrICS yes, Avatar no due to their servers being jacked up and the ROM not available (disregard if they actually did get that ROM back up). Krystian's CM9 and Epinter's CM10.1 are your heavy hitters that really are worth looking into for a 4.0 and up experience.
If you want the video and picture quality, you can use the Alpha stage ROMs suggested above, otherwise best advice is stay on GB until more kernel work is done.
Per the first complaint (see thread name), doing this thing called research would have told you what @ravilov mentioned. You say you got into smartphones 2 yrs ago. The Motorola ICS debacle happened Sept 29th-ish, 2012. Thats within 2 yrs, and that was a big backlash they suffered.

I actually found the AvatarRom, albeit not on their homepage but linked from the forum to some other download source. However, that rom didn't work out very well for me. AtrICS seemed complicated due to me not understanding the whole "vendor" thing they mentioned, so I decided to skip that one entirely. After trying out several roms I went back to CM 7.2 since that at least made the phone function quite good (except one app that seems to have a model specific bug in it).
I'll take a look att Krystian's alternative, whatever it's called. Epinter's seemed to have camera issues?
About "getting into smartphones two years ago": At that time, I nearly hated smartphones, which is why I didn't read very much about them (and therefore, I missed that "why no ICS?"-rage). Just because something "big" happens doesn't mean everyone will know about it. Yes, it's okay to ask me which rock I've been sleeping under. However, I can't point out the rock now, I've forgotten where it was.

Really? now that is interesting. I wonder if they just restored the link and didn't update their page. idk, ppl have been having issues with the creators of Avatar ROM for weeks now about getting their stuff in order. AtrICS isn't hard to understand. Flash main ROM, then flash Vendor. Its like any CM ROM. Flash main ROM, then flash Gapps. Same concept. CM7.2 (GB) is going to give you the most stability and fully functioning ROM for this device. until the 3.1.10 kernel is given the Beta status, all 4.0 and up ROMs are considered Alpha stage if they use said kernel.
Krystian's CM9 is 4.0.4 running on the 3.1.10 kernel. Epinter's is 4.1.2 and 4.2.2 running the same. all 4.0 and up ROMs will have camera issues due to the need for updated drivers. drivers we don't have b/c Moto refuses (not worth fighting for anymore) to release them.
The ICS mess happened a yr ago. but yes, I do see your point. for example, these galaxys that keep coming out. I see news about them, but I don't go looking at them or reading the news about them.
AtrIcs is somewhat a stable rom with just few issues like average battery timing and sometimes lag in screen lock.Only thing i love about AtrIcs is stock look of moto . Currently i am on Epinter's Cm 10.1 it's also worth trying especially with motoblur theme from play store it's a treat to have Atrix on stock moto look with jb.
