[Q] ICS Root? Want to install Cyanogenmod - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So i have a Samsung Galaxy S II and earlier today i were thinking about rooting it.
So i were preparing for the root and installed the Samsung drivers.
When it had installed it popped up a message about new firmware(ICS).
So i installed it, and i dident like it.
So i were wondering, is there a root for ICS 4.0.3 yet?And if it is, can i install Clockworkmod and Cyanogenmod 7 (or 9) on it?
Thanks in advance!
(Sorry for my bad english,Im from Norway )

You don't need root to flash a ROM. Just enable usb debbuging and reboot in recovery, then flash whatever rom you want.
Easiest way to root your phone is to flash Siyah kernel (my opinion )
Cm7 is Gingerbread, Cm9, which is still nightly release, is 4.0.4. Cm9 comes rooted (I'm not sure about Cm7 though, but I think it's rooted too).
I personally use Cm9 with Siyah kernel because of the CWM and better recovery menu. Otherwise Cm9 comes with integrated Rom manager, so Siyah is not necessary.

YES CF Root for one
Root + CWM .

And if it is, can i install Clockworkmod
See above link .
and Cyanogenmod 7 (or 9) on it?
That depends upon the instructions posted for the roms .

other versions are called
Experimental Mod & Nightly Builds which you can find in ICS versions also..

Cyanogenmod 7 is based on Gingerbread and it's the only STABLE Cyanogenmod for Galaxy S2 so far.
Cyanogenmod 9 is still in nightly release ("nightly" means beta (or alpha?) release: may contain bugs, crashes, not working/included apps etc.) and it's based on ICS 4.0.4.
-------------------------------------------------------
Cyanogenmod 9 comes with integrated ROM Manager which is practically CWM with other name and more functions. With ROM manager you can backup/restore current rom, partition SD card, download and install ROMs AND you can flash latest clockworkmod recovery from where you can flash all kernels/roms/updates that you want (with clockworkmod recovery I mean the volume up-home button-lock button thing It changes the default recovery and gives you more options lol)

Best rooting method for stock 2.3.5.?

Hello,
Apparently, upd_1.zip method doesn't work, and SuperOneClick 2.3.3 can't root stock 2.3.5.
How can I root my Ace?
What's the error you are getting?
Is it something like status 7?
I also encountered similar issue.
1st time stock ROM root is OK. After roll back from custom ROM to same stock ROM, I got this error!
Try to wipe cache, format etc .. It works for me!
yeh I had that problem for like 5 weeks trying to root my ace but it had no root access !
OK so download cf-root b3
and flash with cwm 4
then just flash a different rom !
that simple
now I have root and a custom from!!!

Kinda Noobie here
hello,
2 month back i brought unlocked i777 from ebay. It got rooted and unlocked with Android version 2.3.4, baseband i777UCKH7 and kernel version 2.6.35.7.
It got super user app (so i think its rooted). But the CMW is not installed. i checked in recovery mode (it show some android recovery).
So now i m thinkin of installing the latest AOKP ROM (with siyah kernel) but not sure wat to flash first.
should i root again first (root + CWM) then install AOKP. then change the kernel.
or root then kernel then AOKP ?
also i m confuse which root method should i use for installing CWM in gingerbread .

1. You will not lose anything if you flash kernel. Flashing kernel will never delete data. Everything remains intact.
2. You will receive alerts when updates are available etc. And you can also flash them even before it becomes available for your region.
If you are still skeptical about flashing the custom kernel, and only want clockwork mod recovery, then, don't flash anything, you will be fine with a temporary CWM recovery which you already have

There is no need to be updating the kernel very often, except,
- You are facing issues with the present version
-or the update is a major release

So, another newbie question: what is the point of flashing *JUST* the kernel? Is it just to get the permanent CWM and do backup/restore of my full un-rooted ROM?
I realize that once I have the new kernel I can flash any ROM I want (as long as it's compatible), but if that's all I wanted to do, I can just install a temporary CWM right?
Finally, if I install the siyah 4.1.4 (latest), will anything be broken (ie. bluetooth, camera, etc)? If so, why would I do this?

1. Custom Kernel
- to have a CWM CWM recovery.
- better backup and restore process
- More customizable options
- bugs and battery hog fixes, thus better battery life.
- optimized performance
- flashing other Roms with breeze
If you ever wish to restore your original unrooted firmware, it's better to flash it via Odin.
2.
- If you flash Siyah kernel nothing will be broken.
- If you are on ICS 4.0.3 firmware, Siyah 3.5.2, if you are on 4.0.4, then flash Siyah 4.x.x

I was saying, Siyah 3.x.x works much better than Siyah 4.x.x on ICS 4.0.3.
You can still flash 4.x.x to see for yourself, but I will advise you to have a copy of 3.5.2 incase it doesn't work that well for you.

Yes mate now u can flash any Rom ....Just read the instruction before flashing
I would advise you to flash a safe kernel first before doing any wipe and flashing any roms. Siyah is a safe bet.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
1. Download ROM Manager and you'll be able to flash any ROMs you wish using that.
2. All the PA versions are working fine, so just browse through and choose for yourself.
3. Asking questions like that is against forum rules because they often lead to arguments. The best advice is just to download and flash different kernels and stick with which ever one you're happy with.
4. It really doesn't matter in which order you flash them. The result is still the same. I personally always flash the ROM first, but it doesn't make a difference.
5. If you use ROM Manager, as mentioned previously, even if you have to do a full wipe when flashing a different ROM, it doesn't matter because you can simply download it again anyway. Or just save it to your SD card.
6. The changes if bricking your phone are higher if you're worried about it. Just be sure to read all instructions given about installation and follow them perfectly and you'll be fine.
If after reading about flashing ROMs you are still worried, then you're better off waiting for a bit until you've done more research into what exactly is needed.

just follow the steps mentioned and follow some video (like on youtube) and it'll be easy!

Most ROM zips include kernels, so if somebody wants to stay with the same kernel, then it's necessary to flash custom kernel again.

Error status code 7 when flashing ROMs usually means the install script failed an assert when trying to determine if you have the correct model of phone that the ROM is intended for.
Where did you download the copy of CM10.1 from? Are you sure that it is for your model of phone? According to your signature, you have an I9100. Are you sure you didn't download CM10.1 for I9100G, for example?

Where did you download the copy of CM10.1 from? Are you sure that it is for your model of phone? According to your signature, you have an I9100. Are you sure you didn't download CM10.1 for I9100G, for example?

Hey guys,
I'm running rooted leaked XXLSJ JB firmware.
I recently try to flash cm 10.1 via cwm but whenever I flash.. I always get something like error 7..
What should I do, to flash properly?

This is because your likley using Philz kernel for leaked JB.
To flash other custom roms you will need to change kernel back to a previous ICS or JB kernel like Siyah.
Flash the kernel (.tar version) via ODIN/Mobile ODIN.

Thx, I didn't know this about Philz... Mainly because I'm avoiding JB until Samsung releases an official version.

But I'm not using philz kernel, I never flashed it..
I just flashed this leaked firmware few days back.. That's it!!
Anyways, but most of them say to not use siyah kernel with cm 10.1... Rather use dorminax kernel with it, what you say about it?

Hey
Flash dorimanax but don't boot and then flash cm10.1
