Wifi Issue (rooted) - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
I am having issues trying to use my rooted Galaxy S2 to use the wifi tethering so I can use the internetz... my phone is a Sprint GS2. I rooted it using the method that keeps the stock OS just enabling me to have to superuser access pretty much. I have watched countless videos and cannot figure out why my wifi tethering does not work. I also have titanium backup. I watched one video where I was told to freeze or uninstall Tether manager but that does not exist for Sprint GS2 phones apparently. I have Wifi Tether for rooted users that I downloaded off the Market or Play store and my laptop does not find my phone "Androidtether". Any help would be appreciated.
thanks,
julio

While this is a pretty general question, the Sprint GS2 (aka the Epic 4g Touch) has a completely separate forum.
In regards to the tethering app, did you for sure start it?

Yes I started the app. I clicked on start tethering and the wifi logo changed from white to yellow. I had a feeling that this was in the wrong section, I am very new to this site and if one of the moderators can move it to the right place that'd be great. Or if its fine here thats cool too.

Weird way to get wireless tether to work on 3g and 4g

Let me start by saying I take no credit for discovering this I am simply passing along information I found that I thought may be useful... I actually stumbled across it here... http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/detail?id=1057&q=evo 3d
Not sure if this has been brought up but I figure this will help until these issues are resolved. Basically you have to download both barnacle wireless tether and wifi tether 3.1 beta 2. In order for wifi tether to work you first have to start barnacle tethering, once it starts close it out then start up wifi tethering and voila you should connect. I have tested this with both 3g and 4g and connected and transferred data on both. You only have to open barnacle once unless you reboot. If you reboot or restart your phone, you have to start barnacle again, close it and then start wifi tether. I have no idea why or how this works but it does. Hopefully somebody more skilled than I can figure out what is happening as it doesn't seem to be kernel related as originally thought. Would love to hear back on results and maybe devs ideas as to how and why this works.
I can confirm also I have temp root couldn't get WiFi tether to work and my tab doesn't do ad hoc. It's working fine now thanks

yes i have and it worked for me.....been using this since the temp root, now with s-off.
EDIT: you dont need to install barnacle along with this in order to get it work. make sure u go into the setting and check the routing fix...this should allow you to tether. i am running it now to post this post.

Tried and still no go. I wonder if the temp root has something to do with it. Anybody else who did not temp root get WiFi tether to work without barnacle

I have s-off and perm root. Tried this every way I can think of. Doesn't work. Tried it with the latest 3.1 beta. Tried it with your pre-14 link. Set desire-cdma and routing fix. Just doesn't work.
Are you sure you're not on 4G and that's why it is working for you? I mean, it does connect and it acts like it "wants" to work, but no go. Trying to connect to any website via the tether is just nada.

I'm pretty sure the only way to run it is how I stated in the op. Unless its something that temp root did.

Glad this helped some of u. I'm the guy who discovered the weird way to get wifi tether working by using barnacle. I posted it here a few weeks ago http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=15599383#post15599383
Then I posted the issue on google code so that the dev would do something about it.
It's really bugging me since I have to turn off my phone everyday b/c there is no signal at work. Then I have to do the barnacle trick everyday. I cannot get cable/dsl/fios at home so I have to use wifi tether everyday. Sucks ass, but it's better than satellite. I think I'll wait a week till perm-root & roms are mature and flash something with the native hotspot unlocked. If you prem-rooted then u should just flash a rom now.
BTW I only use 3G obviously.. since I don;t live in the city and Clear doesn;t know how to run a business. I've tried wifi tether pre14 and the other versions which worked..i just stick to the latest. If u still can't get it to work try using device profile thunderbolt or evo 4g. I think I've been using evo 4g.

I'm assuming you are temp rooted, and I believe this is why pre 14 is working. I took the ota updates before rooting permanently and none of the WiFi tether work unless I use your trick. So its either a temp root thing or an ota thing.

wifi tether help

Hi guys,
Im trying to help a friend, He has the Verizon Samsung Fascinate, the phone is rooted, has super user. I Dl'd and installed the Android wifi tether 2.07apk from the google dev site. started up the app. started tether without issue, looked on my Toshiba Thrive Tablet, found the android tether wifi, tried to connect and message pops up on my tablet stating something about adhoc is not supported.
I have a Droid Incredible running Nil's sense 3.5 rom and have the same android tether app, I can start up tethering, turn tethering on, connect and surf the web on my tablet, with no mention of the adhoc compatibility thing.
Im not up on Samsung devices, I have always had HTC phones. So im not sure if this a Samsung issue or what.
I compared his tether app settings to mine and both are the same.
Im at a loss here and could really use some advice about how to fix the issue.
Thanks
Hitch
Try downloading the newer version 3 beta 6 from here http://code.google.com/p/android-wi...tail?name=wifi_tether_v3_1-beta6.apk&can=2&q=
Be sure to go into settings and change device-profile to samsung fascinate.
It may work with that version...

Thanks for moving the thread, I had posted another topic in the Q&A.
The good news is 96 people have read the post, the bad news is not one person posted any ideas, This usually happens when you cannot post in the rooted section.
Still hoping someone has some ideas to help out.

Which rom is installed? Is it just stock Touchwiz with root? I ask because if your friend is willing to try CM7, the built-in tethering works beautifully.

its called Evil Fascinate from the samsung galaxy forums. I told him he needs to start getting his roms from here, he just rooted for the first and has a lot to learn.
I know he likes roms that are really themed, If you any suggestions for a stable, themed rom that has tether baked in I will flash it for him and see if he likes it.
Thanks
Hitch
can't he just download opengarden tether or barnicle tether from market or am I missing something?

I have tried barnicle, but We get the same message when trying to connect from our tablet to the phone (AdHoc is not supported) and it wont connect, no matter what tether app I try I get the AdHoc not supported message.
I dont get this message when tethering my tablet to my Droid Incredible.
Thats why I was thinking it had to do with Samsung firmware, but I really have no idea and Im hoping that you Samsung guys can get my friend fixed up.
An easier question might be "what tether app do you use on your Fascinate"
Hitch
I use open garden, but I have never tried tethering to a tablet...only pc's.
Meh, easy fix for the ad-hoc thing. In wifi tether (I use pre10, 6 should work) go to settings, set your device profile to Google NexusOne and your setup method to Netd (master) and it will run in infrastructure mode and run fine. Tablets will connect and receive internet.

Turn my Fascinate into a mini tablet for my children?

SO i just got a GSII for xmas and I want to pass down my old phone to my children so they don't bug me to let them play with my new phone all the time
Can anyone create a rom package for me that would allow them to only get on wifi, play games, and surf the internet?
If not can anyone give me some instructions for how to disable calling and data all the time?
Thanks,
when the phone is deactivated it can no longer make calls or use data. It will only be able to use wifi to do everything you need. Its like an iPod now.

Deactivated phones can still dial 911... That may be an issue for some people.
I know on the Eris forum, someone came up with a script to disable the CDMA/EVDO raidio and the dialer app.

I can make a rom. Just pick the rom that you want (MIUI.US, cm7, cm9, etc., or even stock)

xboxfanj - I'd like to do this also. The ROM version doesn't matter to me. My daughter wants to use the phone as a media player. If you're willing to help out with this, THANKS A MILLION in advance.
Please let me know if you need anything from me.

Miui or touchwhiz is ideal for a children. Cyanogenmod is too advanced and or ugly looking.
I have 2 that I am wanting to do this with and would love this!!!!!
Why couldn't you just use root explorer to remove the phone.apk
Sent from my SCH-I500 using xda premium
I think that might mess up the market access...
You can also put a PIN on the phone functionality. Not sure if this only applys to GSM phones, but under security - there is a Set up SIM card lock.
Edit: hmm yeah, don't see it on the fascinate.

+1 This would be nice to have in miui or touchwiz as mentioned earlier. Or cm7, I'm easy.
Just got new phones for me and the wife. I've figured out how to do it on my old X, but still having issues with the wife's old Fascinate. Anyone come up with anything for this yet?

easiest way to do it would be to deactivate it and then either use a custom launcher to hide the apps, or get a locking app and password protect the phone and whatever else app. then you don't need to have a custom rom or anything and you still know the password if you did need to access those apps in an emergency.

Im thinking just disabling the plan would be the easiest thing to do ...
Why not just put it in airplane mode that's what I did on my old log ally now wife and kids play games on it

[Q] Wireless Tethering

Just curious as to what everyone uses to tether over wifi? I tried barnacle but my tablet won't find the network, barnacle works fine on my attic but not the S2. Any particular reason?

Its honestly about how much data you end up using, if you go crazy and start using 50gb then they will want to switch you.
They give warnings before they do anything and they are starting to throttle people after a certain point.
You can try this for USB Tethering - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424676
He claims to found a way to hide it but they still know how much data you use.
Basically, don't use a desktop browser. It's one of the #1 ways to get the tether police on your ass. People are getting nastygrams after only using the "desktop useragent" feature of Dolphin HD 2-3 times.
Otherwise, native tethering (remove TetheringManager2.apk if on a stock ROM) works best. Only one that isn't adhoc.
OK. So I was in iHell for a few years and got pretty good with the file system/ jailbreaking. So I've since been paroled (from Jail-breaking :l ) and PRESTO!!! Im a noob again.
Im still debating on flashing but im gonna root for sure. I need to check my facts here. I can root via any mentioned method. I'll need to install titanium (?) to freeze that network check to use the native hotspots. (The name of that file escapes me but I can search it up later)
Anything else for now? Is busybox worth it?
On a semi-related note, I've not had multiple ROMs available to me. What's the benifit to other Roms? I mean what does CM have that stock doesn't? Is there a break down or spread sheet to compare capabilities?
This may sound goofy, but I can already do everything that I wanted my old iPhone to do on stock, but if flashing will bring more, cooler, and
as yet unimagined toys to my newly Android enriched life, I'm all about flashing. What say you XDA?
Sorry for the long post. Caffeine makes me type a lot.

Well follow the guide inn general about how to flash custom binaries, it'll help. Also, most rooms take care of the tetheringmanager2.apk sup you don't need to do anything else, it works out of the box. Make sure to use a mobile user agent while browsing, and you should be fine.
As a starting point, I suggest unnamed or icscrewed (both roms I've personally tried and that both are great)
The most common side effect of having a custom ROM is the desire to show it off, awesome battery life, good support and limitless customization. Just read before you do anything and you'll be golden.

WiFi totally gone from Atrix after unlock - flash

Hello,
I'm going nuts trying to figure out how to fix my Atrix 4G (AT&T).
I Rooted > Unlocked my Atrix and installed the Touch version of CWM and flashed CM9 and it all seemed perfect.
However it seems all the WiFi drivers are gone.
Trying to turn on WiFi simply makes my Atrix reboot. Trying to use some WiFi tethering tools give back a 'no Wpa supplicant' error.
The phone works perfectly except for the fact it has zero WiFi capability now.
I flashed other ROMs like MIUI, and AOKP to no avail, same issue, no wifi.
I flashed the Stock ATT ROM via a fruitcake thinking it will 'reinstall' my wifi drivers but i was mistaken.
Anyone have any ideas how to get WiFi drivers installed again? Why wouldnt the ROMs have that already?
Bit confused and would appreciate any help.

In that case, your wifi/bt chip is likely burnt. Sorry.
