Root with fastboot under linux - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am trying to root my device, but for multiple reasons, it won't work with Odin (I am using Linux only, the windows system which I can access has no USB 2.0, and without I get a windows-bluescreen; tried with VirtualBox, but had no luck).
So here is my question: Can I use fastboot and adb to root my phone and after that flash a custom rom?
I've found only guides to install the android sdk (which is already installed on my system) and a guide to root the Galaxy nexus.
Can I work with that guide for the galaxy s2? If yes: is the kernel image (bzImage) in the CF-root-kernel the "boot.img"?
I couldn't find any information on this for the Galaxy S2, but if there is a similar thread, sorry, but would be nice to point me to the right thread.
I would really appreciate any help

galaxy s2 doesnt have fastboot
you can try heimadall it is like odin and works on linux

Thanks! I'll take a look at it.

bluefa1con, you (and the heimdall developer) are my new hero(es)!
It works like a charm. I hoped so much that I don't need to install windows here.
Thanks a lot!

[Q] ROMs with secondary bootloader . . .

Basically my dilema is this. I run Mac OSX exclusively at home, but I am able to use a friend's computer to flash via ODIN if neccessary. Its a pain, however. I'd like to use Heimdall with new frontend, but a requirement for heimdall on OSX is that you have previously installed a secondary bootloader.
My question is, what ROM or ROMs can I flash with ODIN to aquire the secondary bootloader and not have to bother my friends with my sick ROM fettish anymore?
(Currently soft-bricked off of Onyx 4.2UFL trying to flash JK6)
Not sure exactly what you are talking about... but i think the answer you are looking for is Rom Manager. There are 2 versions Free & Donate/Paid both are available in the market, so once you fix your soft brick find it and install it. The only thing you will need a computer for at that point is to copy the ROM to the internal SD card.
ROM manager is fine unless you need to recover from a brick. Its not much good if you do. I'd like to use Heimdall for OSX, but it requires a secondary bootloader. On the I9000 you can get it from a JPA ROM. I don't know which ROMs have this on the Vibrant.

[Q] Does anyone know a tutorial for mac users install ICS on SG9100?

Hello guys, I'm a mac (OSX 10.7.3) user and would like to install ICS on my SG9100. Does anyone knows a trustworthy tutorial that suites my needs?
Thanks in advance.
Unfortunately the easiest way is to use a PC and update through Kies, although Kies can be a pain to use also. The other option is to root and flash an ICS ROM.
There are various ways to do this, all which are explained throughout the forum.
Hey,
first, there's Kies for Mac...
http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/usefulsoftware/KIES/JSP
It suppose to provide firmware updating if your device has been intact (you got it without custom rom / rooted).
secondly,
there is Heimdall which is open source alternative that should be able to flash roms. though I must admit your easiest solution is PURE bootcamp (no parallels/virtualization) and ODIN if your not going the 100% samsung way.
I was going to suggest Kies for Mac but the mac version does not appear to support firmware upgrades, so I had to borrow a friends PC. I then went ahead and rooted and Flashed a vanilla ICS, but that's by the by.

Question SM-A025U Flashing Question

Just picked up this device a couple of weeks ago and decided to look into rooting. I've read over a large amount of web pages just soaking up any information on the device I could. I also read over the root guide in this forum and I am aware they are not the exact same model but I've got it down to the tar file with boot.img and the 2 other files in it. My question: is there a way I can flash files to this Samsung without Odin because I do not have access to a pc at the moment. Is it possible to install heimdall command line through termux on my oneplus or Motorola that I already have root access on? That's what I would normally do. Just connect 2 phones with a c cable and use the rooted one like a pc. It has its limitations but it works for the most part. I even tried doing that with this Samsung but fastboot/download mode doesn't recognize fastboot commands. If anyone had any input at all it's appreciated.
Off topic but has anyone been having problems with termux repos lately?
I've attached stock recovery modified by phh to include fastbootd.
It was stock android 10 for A025G BTU
Thank you very much bro. If I remember correctly this still needs to be flashed with fast boot commands so I still need to flash this recovery with Odin but after that I'll be good to go with fastboot? Sorry, very new to Samsung

Rooting SM-A105M on Linux with Magisk

I use Linux on my computer, and I want to root my phone with Magisk. I know that Heimdall is a substitute for Odin on Linux, but the package description says "Tool suite used to flash firmware (ROMs) onto Samsung Galaxy S devices", so I'm not sure if it would work on my device, and I don't want to risk bricking it.
Does anyone know if Heimdall is supposed to work for my device? If it does, can anyone post or link a step by step guide on how I should go on about doing it? I can't seem to find it anywhere for my device specifically.

Samsung Galaxy Tablet 10.1 SCH-i925 Odin not working

Hi, I have an old Samsung Galaxy Tablet 10.1 SCH-i925 that is not rooted and still has the original OS (Android 4.1.2) on it.
I'm trying to update to Lineage OS 16.0 using Odin, but have not been able to. I've tried several versions of the Samsung USB Driver for Mobile Phones, and several versions of Odin, as well as different USB cables. Does anyone have any advice for what I could do next? I realize this may be a basic question but I've sunk 20+ hours into this and am lost.

You install custom ROM via custom recovery, for example TWRP.

Thanks for the prompt reply! I was under the impression that Odin was required to install TWRP in the first place. Is there another way to transfer TWRP to the device and access it through the bootloader mode on the tablet ("power + volume up") ?

Of course you did, but you wrote:

You must use the exact version of Odin that is recommended for your model, which is 3.13.1. I use The Muppets version.
There are no Samsung drivers other than these:
Samsung Android USB Driver | Samsung Developers
You need the driver only if you are developing on Windows and want to connect a Samsung Android device to your development environment over USB.

Ok! I downloaded Samsung Android USB Driver for Windows v1.7.59 and am using the muppets version of Odin (3.13.1), and it still fails to transfer any files. I tried with an auto-root .tar file and TWRP. I've attached the Odin window output for reference:
Oh, this is for a galaxy *note* tablet, not the thing I have. You may want to update the post title to add that detail. I had to google the SCH-i925 to be sure...

I don't understand why you want to flash something for n8010 when you have a tablet from Verizon?
Show the tablet property screen with hardware and firmware information.
Have you unlocked the bootloader?

I read in various other places that the auto-root file and TWRP file for the n8010 works for the Verizon version (SCH-i925) since it's essentially the same device. I may be wrong though...I cannot find a specific TWRP file online for this version of the 10.1.
I have attached the device details to this post.
Unfortunately, extensive searching online indicates that there is no easy way to unlock the bootloader for the sch-i925: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...root-jailbreak-recovery.3400894/post-79789473
Any advice on these various issues would be greatly appreciated!

Without an unlocked bootloader, you probably aren't flashing TWRP or a custom ROM. In stock ROM you can root easily, even with Towelroot.
There's nothing more I can't help, so as not to harm.
Ok well thanks for your help!
