I am working with a company phone at my bosses request..what he really wants is a rooted phone on Froyo with Clockwork recovery.
This proved to be more of a challenge than I thought (Froyo). I did try to get around the signed update problem in the E3 recovery but wasn't successful.
Finally, I odin'd back to Eclair and installed CWM. It is weird in that I have to reinstall the update package each time to get CWM.
My questions:
1) anyway to get it into CWM directly (each time?; so it defaults to the CWM)
2) re Froyo, I guess the only way is to use CWM to install a Froyo based ROM?
a) If so, any recommends on an almost stock rooted ROM with Exchange email? (would prefer one that had the bloat removed, however; prefer stability to speed)
b) If I flash a Froyo ROM, am I ok in that I don't have to mess with the new bootloader business?

You don't need to mess with bootloaders in order to install froyo. If you're on eclair then just put the attached update.zip posted by s15274n on root of your internal sdcard. Do not rename it or anything. Get into recovery, reinstall packages TWICE and you'll have your recovery then flash any froyo rom you want. Yes, it is that simple. Hey guys looking for some input Im getting a new vibrant and it should have 2.1 stock eclair, I want to flash the bionix v rom, my question is will i need 2.2 froyo before i flash bionix or can i flash from 2.1. or if I need 2.2 how should I go about this step by step please Thanks.
No buddy you will not need to upgrade to 2.2 first. You made a great decision on picking a rom though, best/smoothest one there is IMO. Here is what you should do:
Go to vibrant development forum
Download the AIO vibrant toolbox, it's one of the first stickies.
Install it. Within that toolbox app, install the drivers (i think you also need to have .net 4 installed also which is standard on win7)
Download bionix or whatever rom it is that you want
Make sure your phone is hooked up to the usb and debugging is ON and usb storage is OFF
Click "flash custom rom"
Point the program to your bionix file (which you should have on the computer, NOT the phone!)
Your phone will restart, click reinstall package, it will restart again, and click reinstall packages again. This will bring up your new clockwork mod recovery. Click install update.zip!
Your done!
There is quite a few different ways of doing what you requested, but i would say this is the easiest/most noob friendly way to get started. Hope i helped! I am also getting the itch to flash a rom and was going to go with Bionix as well. My only question I have is do i haver to install a different modem as well? I live in Chicago. Will i lose all my apps and data when flashing? Can i still get avatar and sims back on bionix?
I cannot confirm Avatar, I THINK there is a fix for it but right out of the flash I am leaning towards no. Sims should be ok.
I am kinda confused on the question of the apps though. Are you talking about stock apps or ones you dl'ed to the phone?
Stock apps you can reinstall via the bloater app. Extra apps I suggest using Titanium Back up to back them up.
I am not familiar with the AIO toolbox as I have been doing it comfortably the old school way of root, clockwork, flash. If that tool roots for you then dl TB and back up ONLY user apps, not system data. After you flash Bionix you can load them back up.
All the posted Roms come with the modem upgrade, if you do not like the one installed then the Bionix thread also has a link to different modems. Majority of people are experiencing best results with KB1 and KA6.

Should be fine, just root and go. If you can get root and Clockwork then you can flash.

Yes. Install the app. Run the app. It will tell you to restart the phone - so, that means shut down the phone. Start it back up again. That will have installed Amon_RA recovery, which will allow you to Nandroid backup, install a custom ROM, etc.
(So, after that restart, you can shut the phone down, hold VolUp while powering on to get to Amon_RA recovery. You sound experienced enough to know what to do from there.)
By the way, the Eris by now should have Eclair (2.1), not cupcake (1.5). There should have been three OTAs that brought cupcake up to 2.1.
And then to get CWM...

As you have seen, many people running Clockwork Recovery as the default recovery have bricked their Erises. ROM Manager comes with almost all of the CM7 ROMs, but you can install it. From within ROM Manager you can have it flash Clockwork, which puts an update.zip file on the SD Card. Go into Amon_RA Recovery, Flash a zip from SD card, choose update.zip, and it will start Clockwork, if you prefer using that. (I actually always do this, as I prefer the Nandroid backup and wipe functions in Clockwork over Amon_RA.) Running Clockwork in this way is safe, as Amon_RA remains as the default recovery.
And as far as returning to stock...

No SBF files for the Eris; however, user bftb0 created a ROM that you can flash that reinstalls stock Recovery and the stock 2.1 ROM. It's called Flashback_21v2, located here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=792026
The no radio version should be fine for this purpose.

Ok, so I haven't picked up my Streak in about 2 years since I got onto Sprint. I'm in the UK for a couple of weeks so needed to come back since it's GSM. I searched but didn't see a guide on how to flash from a Froyo ROM (Streakdroid 1.9.0) to one of the newer GB ROMs (I'm thinking Longhorn). My baseband is GAUSB1A131800-EU. I don't know what version of Streakmod recovery I'm on. I don't need a detailed guide on how to install Streakmod or the ROM. Just would appreciate if someone could tell me if there is a certain thing I need to do first (like update to the latest Streakmod) and if there are any dependencies between things like matching up a certain baseband with the ROM. Thanks!
I think I'm on CWM so I guess I have to go to Streakmod. Do I need to install stock recovery and/or ROM first? I have a vague recollection that I used to do something like that to update the baseband. I just can't remember because my Galaxy S2 you can independently flash modems and ROMs and of course, I haven't gone between Android versions as it's always been GB. Thanks!

What do you mean? Are you not able to connect with Fastboot? Is your cable /port broken so it won't connect at all? Anyway, here's what I suggest. First you need to install Fastboot. Search for the thread ADB and Fastboot and download the zip. I unzipped it to my C root directory to make things easy. Then search for the thread Dell Streak5/Flashing Guide. That has all the instructions to install Fastboot, connect with Fastboot. I'm assuming you found the thread with StreakMod so follow those instructions to then install it. If you don't know how to use Fastboot, search for the thread Dell Streak the Complete Guide. The guide is dated in terms of the files it references but the instructions on how to use Fastboot are still accurate. Just replace where it talks about Clockworkmod with StreakMod. Good luck.
Since I already wrote all this, I guess I'll add what I did in case it helps someone. Moving from Froyo to GB requires updating the baseband. To do that, I installed the stock 407 recovery and then stock 407 ROM. Then I installed StreakMod then flash the GB ROM of your choice. I chose Longhorn 2.8. Only had it for about a day but seems to work fine. No issues with reboots. Can't comment on speed or battery life since I haven't used the Streak in like a year so I have no reference.

I am sorry if this is a dumb question. But i have failed several attempts while shifting to ICS (RC 5 by team-nyx). Every time when i install ROM & kernel via CWM and boot the device (vibrant t959) it freezes on the screen with VIBRANT and SAMSUNG displaying WHITE on BLACK back ground.
i have gone back to JFD and tried several times BUT same result.
I was on froyo 2.2 (build UVKB5) updated via kies and did it but no luck. I followed wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Vibrant:_Full_Update_Guide and did starting from No. 03 --
downloaded Cmenard's Kernel with the ClockworkMod Recovery 2.5
Heimdall Suite 1.3.2 for windows
AND upto No. 9 under Windows ONLY: section
the CWM installs as it says (A blue transfer bar will appear on the phone showing the kernel being transferred. The device will reboot automatically. )
after that i cleared factory, cache and dalvik cache.
then I select install Zip from SD card and chose the ROM (which is from team-nyx.com/index.php/releases).
after 3% it says rebooting and vibrant shuts down and reboots.. when after I clicked the combo (vol+vol-power) to enter the CWM its not there.. so I reinstall using [heimdall flash --kernel zImage] command in PC's cmd. then after i redid the same to select from SD and then ROM installed ok.
then I selected the kerenel which was taken by same source and installation went normal..
after I select reboot from CWM it reboots and hangs on vibrant screen.
I cannot figure OUT WHAT IM doing WRONG..

From what you told us it sounds right. Have you tried a different ICS rom? Give ICS slim a try. When you Odin back did you checked re-partition?

You should try flashing the Gingerbread bootloaders using Odin after you flash back to stock. Those bootloaders can run a Froyo ROM as well as ICS so it wouldn't hurt to do either way. After you flash the bootloader then try flashing the ROM.
And try a different ROM like iwillkillyou suggested. Slim is good, but ICZen is very solid if you're tipping your toes into ICS.

Just so that you know, everytime you are using Kies, you are running the risk of hardbricking your device. It is notorius for that and in fact someone last week got HBricked with it.
I don't use ROM Manager and probably won't as long as I have a Vibrant. All you need to do is go back to JFD and pull the CWR from my signature and put it on your internal_sd and label it as Update.zip. Then boot into recovery and hit Reinstall PAckages (might have to do this twice) and your stock recovery (blue) will go to CWR (green) and you can flash away.
Also for more detailed instructions, se my ICS install giude also in my signature.

Thank you for the links.. I downloaded and place CWR inside SD. Without kies can we install official releases via Odin.. is there any way.. im sorry if that is a stupid question
No stupid questions. That is why we are here. I am pretty sure there is a flashable 2.2 stock floating aroung here. I personally don't have it though. Custom 2.2's are at this point tweaked so completely out, that they will blow the doors off any 2.2 stock ROM out there. I usggest Moped_Ryder's ROMs and Fishman's Bionix-redux ROMs. Quality, fast and stable. Not ICS, but everything works and no fear of the dreaded Encryption Bug.

If you can find it, you should be able to. Just put on your card and flash away, taking care to wipe accordingly.
A note on flow though:
2.1, 2.2 -can go into and out of any 2.2 there is laterally.
2.3-4.0 -will need to Odin to stock before going back to a 2.2 ROM. Can move laterally from 4.0 to 4.0 though.
(i.e DO NOT try to restore a 2.2 nandroid or flash a 2.2 ROM when you are on an ICS variant. the /system is completely changed and reformatted. You need to Odin to get it back.)
Moped Ryder uploaded a semi tweaked version of the stock 2.2 build. It's a zip that you can just flash using CWR:

It comes rooted with busybox and some other goodies, but it's the stock kernel and whatnot. I'd highly recommend Fishman's Bionix-V Mod or Moped Ryder's Slim_Ryder ROMs if you're going to be on Froyo though. They're both great, but I went with Fishman's latest Bionix Mod since I couldn't get bluetooth to work on Moped Ryder's ROM. Which is really unfortunate because I loved Moped Ryder's otherwise.
And you don't have to Odin back to stock if you're just bouncing around Froyo or Eclair builds; only if you're coming from Gingerbread or ICS (2.3 or 4.0).
Keep us updated. I'm curious to see what worked. It's probably the gingerbread loaders. But, who knows.

hi.. I tried again with flashing semaphore kernel through Odin installed CWM version higher than 2.5 to install ICS RC5 by nyx --sorry i need that soo badly so didnt checked anything else ..

BUT it didnt worked for me instead freezes at Vibrant start-up screen. So i Couldnt switch back to CWM. I Odin back to JFD with repartition clicked and my vibrant was locked (network lock). Finally, I got it cleared by application named Galaxy_S Unlock by Helroz from the market.
Now I am at the very beginning again. I am now on 2.1 JFD. I dont know WHY this happening to me .. :crying:
gonna try again with GB bootloaders.. BUT Im sick of failing and going back to 2.1 (my friends who are having captivate had no problem)

At the time i was trying it was NOT rooted.. But now i have it rooted because i needed to unlock the network . which happened me for the very first time after flashing back to JFD using Odin..

ROM Manager is no longer supporting 2.1, so if you do go back to JFD, then it will be hard to get RM. It is out there somewhere but really all you need is the Update.zip from above to do it. I suggest that you stay on Fish's ROM for awhile and read about ICS installs and all the little things that are involved. If you do flash Fish's ROM, you don't need to mess with the bootloaders.
Btw, aside from Kies, messing with Bootloaders is one of the sure fire ways to hardbrick your device. It only takes seconds to flash them, but do it wrong and, well you know.

That is what we are here for in the Q&A/General sections.
Regaring your question about Gingerbread bootloaders being needed:::Yes and No.
Gingerbread bootloaders were required in the infancy of ICS ROMs bc they prevented what is called "Rainbows" in your clockwork where you couldn't see anything. The options were there but you just couldn't see them. Then as ICS evolved, the need for GB bl's lessened and now you don't need them at all.
But...There's always a but...Gingerbread bl's are recommended by most of the devs for ICS builds because they seem to work better with the custom recoveries that come with some of the kernels. There is more to it but in short, GB bl's are not required but recommended.
If you go to my ICS install guide, in the middle pages and more again at the end, Yosup (highly respected user) and I have a detailed conversation about bootloaders and their installation. Once he got over the fear and did it, he was hooked and flashing ICS ROMs weekly if not more. It is a very informative section of that thread.

I am trying to root a second T959 phone, my wife's, but am not having much luck. It is currently running Froyo 2.2 w/ KB5.
I tried using AIO Toolbox to root, but that did not work. The first problem I encountered is that it complained that 'verification failed' when I tried to reinstall package.
I searched through the forums, and found that I have recovery 3e. Noticed that on the recovery menu too. So I did what this thread indicated:

Ran the install.bat, and it did its work. I was still not able to apply the update.zip, but I was able to run 'SuperOneClick' to root the phone, or I thought. SuperOneClick reports that I have rooted the phone, but none of the apps think so. So right now, I am still stuck, with a phone that I cannot root.
I found this other thread talking about using ODIN to flash in a CWM instead of using recovery. I am a bit hesitant about this, as I am worried about flashing anything at this point without a backup.
I realize that I could ODIN to stock and I would be able to root and upgrade ROMs without problems, but I would really like to backup using Titanium before doing so.
Maybe I missed something somewhere, but is there a way that I can root this phone on the current fw?

thank you for posting where you found how to root. helped me alot i was running kb5 and now have it rooted and can access CWM. My question to you is did you just download and install the rom? im still on kb5 and am rooted and looking for any OS upgrade GB at least but dont have access to a pc all the time. Do i have to have one or are there any roms that i can flash from my rooted stock froyo?

You don't need a computer to flash a ROM. Find a ROM you like, I recommend a JB ROM as they are supported, anything prior will not be. Download the ROM zip and gapps zip if required. Use a root file app, I use root browser, and move the zips from
sdcard/download to sdcard. Boot to recovery, wipe cache, advanced>wipe dalvik cache, wipe data/factory reset, install zip from SD, install ROM then install gapps, reboot and profit!
*you might have to flash the ROM more than once as it has to update recoveries and partitions.

ty for your reply it was very helpful. i got impatient and flashed a ram before i saw it and everything went perfect. But i do appreciate not only the reply but the steps as well. i am now running iczen with subzero on my vibrant and its the most beautiful thing ive ever seen. lol. i dont even recognize my phone anymore and it feels like i just got a 800 dollar phone for free. i have even recommended every person i know with an android phone to join the site as well as read all steps carefully. thank you again sorry for the long post but i have just been so thrilled about the results i have got.
