Hi,
My battery drops after every abnormal shut down, by pressing the power button for ~8 second. (I do this when the phone freeze.)
And when I turn my SGS2 on, some battery "disappear", sometimes 10%, sometimes 20%, or ever 50%.
For example, I have 90% of battery right before I shut it down (abnormal shut down) , and maybe I get only 50% of battery after I turn the phone on. It that possible that the battery drains 40% in 1 minute? Or it is normal because I shut it down improperly? (have a look of the attachment)
There is no problem if I reboot it normally.
I have two battery, having the same problem.
I face this issue in many ROMs, stock GB ROM, AOKP ROM, MIUI, etc.
I'm using Siyah Kernel 3.1.2 now.
Thanks for any help
(Sorry for my bad English)
I've heard a few users mention this battery drop and i've experienced it myself. It even happens sometimes if i restart my phone after flashing a mod or something.
You'll notice that the battery level starts to climb back up to where it left of (less the normal usage discharge)
Yep, normal on the SGS2.
Just part of the battery weirdness as a result of that fuel gauge chip. Entropy512 has written many a post on the subject if you feel like searching/reading up on it. Nothing to be alarmed about tho, and nothing you can fix. Just make sure you've got plenty of battery left before you do a flash.
On other hand, your freezes if regular is a worry!

Yup, my SGS2 freezes quite frequently after upgrading to Android 4.0.4.
Maybe I'll downgrade to 4.0.3, or perform a full wipe and flash the ROM again to fix this.

i neva faced tht batt drops but one common point is u mus b full on batt wen flashing, the kernel does it suit ur need, apps installd,ur modem ,signal,an look at my sig --right now iam on 520 apps (reason iam pointing this is bcause i figured number of apps tht jus don stop,an i had to remove them..)
Battery drop is pretty common say 7 out of 10 times if you remove battery, after boot you will be 10-20 percent less. Specially if you change roms quickly..

Apart from the first few words of what you said (which I've omitted), what does the rest of it have to do with the OP's query about battery dropping after a dodgy shutdown or when flashing firmwares ?

Hahaha ;-) I tried to. I managed to work out the bit I quoted had nothing to do with what the OP asked. Apparently all the cool kids speak like that nowadays.

Snce I have updated my GS2 to ICS my battery drains insanely fast. I don't even do anything with it. I go to the battery consumption table and it seems like the screen is overusing the battery. The rest are fairly normal percentage.
Like I mentioned in the beginning I only have this problem when i'm using ICS. Right now I have the stock ROM that I downloaded from SamMobile. When I'm using custom ROMs it gets worse. What could this be?
And yes I did try to search for similar problems, because it seems like a lot of people have problem with the battery but no one had the exact same problem as me.
I can just add that since I last charged my phone my screen has been on the lowest brightness and the phone had just been lying on my desk. I haven't even touched it. still 7% has been drained and the screen seems to do the job.
Does anybody know how to fix this?
Same to me....Plzzz guys...Help US.
Battery drain is the hotest topic on ICS these days. I believe the high RAM consumption of ICS is causing battery drain. Almost every ICS rom is having this issue. You are not alone. Relax and wait, you will see improvements.
-
In the mean while, you can install "betterbatterystats" to find out what is draining your battery. Good luck.

So when you clicked on display, it showed that screen on time is 1 hour, and your battery is currently at 77%? That isn't terrible, actually. That means you're on track for a little over 4 hours of screen on time before your battery will reach 0%. Average screen on time for full battery discharge is usually around 4-5 hours.
If you are using the phone, and the screen is on, the battery WILL drain.

No believe me this is not good battery time at all. I have screen on lowest brightness and barely use it. Even when it's just lying there with screen off it drains a lot. I mean I have had this phone since last summer so I have had it or a while and he battery was pretty good before. But since I updated to ICS the battery drains a lot faster than before.

You just said the screen said it was on for an hour, and the battery was at 77% in your post above. So was that not accurate?
If it is draining more since you upgraded to ICS, and you want it to get better, then you have three choices:
1 - Install BetterBatteryStats and other monitoring apps to figure out what is keeping wakelocks and other processes running on your phone that is draining battery...
2 - Do a factory reset/full wipe and see if it was an errant app you installed that could be draining the battery, then slowly start adding your apps back one by one... or
3 - Flash back to a Gingerbread firmware.

Yeah I guess you're right, but at the same time the battery is very very bad compared to before so I'm confused. Maybe I was just enjoying a really good battery time back on Gingerbread?
1. First of all that BetterBatteryStats is too complicated for me. I tried to use it before I didn't get it. What am I supposed to do when I find something that is draining my battery. Should I freeze it? Uninstall it?
2. I have tried this a lot of times, no change.
3. If I use Gingerbread for some reason the APN settings with at&t doesn't work properly. I lose connection very often. So I'll rather have worse battery time for now. Is there a solution to the internet connection?
Thanks man I appreciate you taking your time!

What modem/baseband are you using with Gingerbread, that could make a difference with mobile data dropping.
Also, what APN settings for AT&T are you using? There are a few different APNs. The two major ones are "wap.cingular", and "phone". The one you should actually use will depend on what kind of data plan you are signed up on.

When I'm on GB I use KL1. Is that what you're asking? I had no idea there were two different APNs... I use "wap.cingular"
Do you have the APNs for "phone?" It would be awesome to have that. Then I could just go back to GB until they fix it.
BTW I checked my battery stats again, 24% left. It says screen 56% and Time on: 1h 54min... So it's is pretty bad, right? . It dropped really fast.
Android OS is second with 15%.

APN for "phone" doesn't work unless you have a specific data plan - namely any 4G plan. So if I recall from some of your past posts, (I remember you now) you're on the non-smartphone data plan, right? Then the "phone" APN won't work for you if you are.

So you're running a clean flash? No downloaded apps installed yet? Yeah, that's terrible. Sorry to hear. I would go back to Gingerbread.
Reading stories like yours makes me glad I'm still ON Gingerbread.
The problem is that I'm not really using the screen that much. today I have just listened to music, not even used the screen that much. Just text a little bit an nothing else.
But still it shows up as if I have used the screen more then the other apps running in the background. Remember my screen is on LOWEST brightness level and I barely use it.

Stock XXKI3, (2.3.5) I have several mods though.
If all else failed, try shutting down your phone, take the battery out and clean the battery contact points. Dirty contact points might be the culprit.

Mine is 28 C and I'm using phone for more than 2 hours, internet browser. If you tried differents rom and kernel and still nothing, I suggest you to clear up you phone. Reboot in recovery, mount and storage and format system, data, cache, factory reset, boot in download mode, flash stock ics rom, then root with cf root kernel. Then install again rom which you're using at the moment.
I9100 has the highest heat emission (my brothers 35 degrees)
I9100T is better (mines 28 degrees)
I9100G has the best i hear but i cant confirm that
The best you can do is find a good modem, as i noticed ever since i switched from LPQ to LP6 i've heated up a lot less
i also use siyah so i think that doesn't cause huge amounts of heating, as mentioned before always close apps
Hope this helped and good luck

you will have to figure out, use instructions here
My SGS2 is going back for repairs due to overheating. It started by draining a full battery in an hour. Battery temp was 64C and now it heats up just by inserting the battery and not even turning on the phone. Not possible to charge it either. Tried flashing stock rom, factory resets but no go so my belief is that this is a hardware issue and not a software problem. Needless to say it has never been close to water or any other fluids. I got the phone about two months ago so hopefully this will be, and should be IMO, covered by warranty.
Will be interesting to see what the repair center says...

Hi,
My Wife's GS2 had a problem overheating recently too - it was stock ROM, not even rooted, so it wasn't overclocked. I pulled it apart, racking my brains trying to find the problem. I tried updating the the latest official ROM, updating the Modem, but nothing...
It turned out that her Internal SD Card was full, which must have been causing IO issues, and the the CPU to overwork or something, because as soon as I transferred all the photos etc. from the card, and cleared caches, it resumed running at a reasonable temperature.
Sometimes the answer is simpler than the one we're looking for - or it certainly was in my case.
Hope that helps.
Hi...mine was heating up like hell too, and its 3 days old...
for me it was the facebook mobile application on samsung galaxy sII i9100 (ICS). Installed KH3 modem , no change .. but task manager showed 30-66 cpu usage...the top 10% surface of the face of the phone and the back of the phone near the camera was searing hot, somewhere up to 50-55 degrees Celsius, making a phonecall in those conditions was very uncomfortable, and i was afraid of hardware damage if that went on. So, If i shut it down and used facebook from browser, it cooled off back to 30-35 degrees in a matter of minutes. only mobile data was turned on, gps, bluetooth, wifi was always off.
So im guessing for these kinda heat-ups (top of the phone and upper back) it is app which drains the CPU...
Note : i had no problems with battery life, meaning it resisted 12h moderate/heavy usage even with facebook mobile app...but i always try to exit all apps when im not using the phone ( bad(?) symbian habit)
you should change the modem :good:

You have the screen on permanently.... it is THE largest user of battery in a phone, always. And OLED screens when displaying bright and light images use masses of juice.
And your phone never sleeps.
No idea what the hell you are doing, but it isn't a video player... it's a phone.
The image tells me your Display is always on and it isnt in sleep mode.
Did you play some games and listen to music ?

Hi guys,
Thanks for your replies. Thing is, when using the phone, even when doing simple things, the battery decreases drastically faster than before. I am also using a extended battery.
Are there any other things, apart from brightness and turning off Wifi, GPS, that I can do to improve battery life?

No... if you use the phone with the screen on for 3 hours solid.
And I agree, the screen was on the majority of the time but still, the battery life is decreasing more than before
Use the app Better Battery Stats to see if your phone has any other background processes running aside from what you expect it to. Uninstall/disable the offending apps then try to do your thing again.
Keep in mind as well that ICS uses more battery in general vs Gingerbread though, so that's another factor.
You can try flashing modem for your region, it could fix your heating issue.

It's getting hot and draining because of the screen on time, not the ROM.
The screen uses the same power irrespective of the ROM. Only brightness and screen content will affect it.
Download "Watchdog Task Manager Lite" turn on the monitoring and wait and check the stats, if you have an app that is misbehaving, un-install it.
Most battery issues are due to that.
Hope it helps.
Flash modem from your region, means the version of modem that came when you bought the phone.
Example, when I'm on stock ics / cm9 it gets real hot near camera when I use edge.
Flashing my GB modem fixes that issue.
Also it's easier to flash what you have already used instead of finding the correct one.

your image
I see your image shown that your device has been froze somer times. Maybe you should try changing the kernel. Hope can fix your problem.
Have you 3 not read any of the above? Look at the screenshot. It's screaming the reason at you. Nothing stops the display consuming power and this big one really uses power.

Poor battery because its awake
you get poor battery life because as you can see on the graph, the phone has been awake all the time as well as the screen, the screen is a big battery leecher, when i first got my phone and i used it for like 2 hours with no apps, the screen drawed almost 40% battery life, so if you want to increase battery life i suggest you to change your settings so your screen turns off automatically

I'm getting the same issue. I've also noticed that I ain't connecting to 3G much as before (before rooting / installing ROMS etc).
I believe its got to do with the modem. How do I know which one to switch to? My phones a SIM free one from UK.

Hye everyone, my name is Ruben and I am 35 years old, I have a small goatee and my hair is thinning and I have a question.
Yesterday, Before I flashed a new ICS rom, my battery life is at 83% and after I flashed the rom my battery dropped drastically to 14%.. and after a while my battery started to increase to 16%,17% and after a while I ignore it and charged until it reached 100%, no issues until now..
My question is why is the battery indicator behave like this? is it okay to ignore it... If it doesn't what should I do to repair and avoid this.
p/s always do the 4 wiping before flashing to public.. sorry.. before flashing new rom. using 1 rom only, and from ICS to ICS.
Thank You.
Yes it's normal, the battery percentage does that when you just installed a new Rom. Leave it a while and it probably will settle. If do not, and it is actually a pretty normal thing with my phone, change the kernel (latest Siyah Kernel, 3.3.2, it makes my battery icon goes insane).
And it happens more often when you reboot your phone.
So.....

Why the battery goes crazy more often if I reboot my phone? can you give me scientific evidence on this behavior. Is this only graphical glitch or it directly effecting the battery itself. btw my battery only goes crazy only after flashing certain new rom.
p/s: maybe siyah 3.3.2 is a steroids for battery, yeah!! gokhan steroid...

Happens to everyone. Give it a full charge/discharge cycle to settle. 'Scientific evidence on this behaviour' ? Search XDA. There are dozens (at least) of threads/posts that have been written about the 'battery weirdness' of the SGS2 in the time I've been here.
It's a statistical glitch, nothing more. If it were happening with every rom you try even after that initial charge/discharge then maybe it's an issue with the battery.

Okay. Then it is decided.. Normal Behavior. Maybe there should be a new thread that titled as :Android, The Normal Weird behavior, that display the list of weird behavior that is normal that happens on android phone.. like mine was. or a thread that display the list of Normal Weird Behavior that happen to android users like Flashing disorder, craziness of F5 button, user became retard when rom has 3 days battery life.
I have an idea. How bout you start a thread like this ? I'm sure the community will be eternally grateful.

This a problem with ICS Stock.. The phone doesn't go into deep sleep even with the screen off. Can you post a SS of the Battery history details?

Well, if your phone's on now then take a SS of that.. That will let you know whether its a problem related to ICS or whether its a battery problem..
Check if when the screen is off, the phone's still awake or not..

I think you haven't understood what I'm saying
Keep your phone locked for sometime, maybe half an hour, don't use your phone.. Then check the Battery history details and see if the phone's awake even when the screen's off.
Problem with all ICS ROMs.
Restart after charging via wall charger, then it doesn't happen.

Is that problem related to the kernel?? Any idea?
And I didn't get it how restarting after charging will help..

No, it is not the kernel. It is a bug in the ROM, that hasn't been found or fixed yet. Restarting resets certain phone data.

It has happened always since ICS update for me, with all ICS ROMs I have used, with all ICS kernels I have used.
Restarting does the deal. I restart my phone every morning anyway, to clean up the memory/CPU, so phone will be faster.
It dosent happen with stock extended kernel..earlier it happened to me when I switched to krsh kernel aftet that I flashed extended kernel and and install custom rom like rs lite. With wipe data and format and this bug dissapeared..then it never came back
Hope it helps

In my experience so far concerning battery life, the kernel plays a huge role.
Stock kernel is a big drainer. Rage kernel is very good with battery life, as is KRsH kernel.
Flash a custom kernel, and set CPU governor to smartassv2, svagedzen or brazilianwax. Those 3 are in my experience the best.

Thought so.. that it was related to the Kernel.. I'm on extended stock kernel now and the battery life isn't as bad as stock ICS. Although I really haven't kept track of the exact battery life on this kernel, but it's certainly better than Stock ICS.

I've had similar problems when my usb port got burnt, and battery indicator constantly kept showing 'charging' icon, even thought cable was unplugged. Apparently some process/service (related to USB connectivity) prevented OS to go to sleep, and that kept draining the battery... Thanks to warranty, phone got fixed, and since i havent experienced any battery drain. Last time i checked, i got up to 3 days without recharging the battery
