Samsung's S-Beam - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm curious what it would take to make this work with other ICS phones that utilize NFC. This feature is amazing but not everyone I know will buy this, of course. It would suck to be the only person with a SGSIII and not be able to transfer things using wifi direct just because the guy across from me is using the EVO 4G LTE or the HOX or a nexus device :-\

S beam uses NFC to set up a connection between the (currently only GSG3) devices and then uses WiFi Direct to transfer the files @ 300mbps. That said the SGS3 is the only phone currently to be able to transfer whole HD movies from phone to phone within 5-6 minutes!
The thing isn't really only about NFC but about NFC and WiFi Direct. The 2 HTC phones you mentioned both supported WiFi Direct and NFC but it seems the Nexus doesnt support WiFi Direct. It is possible that it will work with these.
Well since even more devices support WiFi Direct it's not that unlikely to see it spreading since I personally (and all of my friends) find bluetooth way too slow.

I know it pairs both services together, cause the Nokia N9 (I believe the N9, the meego one anyways) does the same thing by pairing the two phones via NFC and then using wifi direct to share content, what I am curious to is wether or not someone thinks they can port the app to a non Touchwiz phone or if another app can be made that would mimic its functionality. And I thought the galaxy Nexus did support wifi direct?

^ This, Wifi Direct is supported, I've used it between my girlfriends Nexus and mine, easy enough, S-Beam looks easier though.

Actually I tried to do it again, and I don't think it was Wifi direct I used, maybe it was just regular beam.

When you use android beam on stock Android it does only use NFC and not wifi direct. However in the settings of the phone, I think in the same place where you find the NFC settings does it not also show placeholder or toggle for wifi direct? I know the G-Nex supports it.. (at least I was sure before now :-\)
But what I'm asking is how hard would it be to take this system, for using NFC for the 'handshake' and wifi direct for the 'conversation' on other platforms so we can all share with each other at high speed?
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk 2

i do have a sgs2 lte and i have NFC and WI-FI Direct.
I think S BEAM would work on this device.
The big difference is that S BEAM will do the pairing between devices easily while with only WI-DIRECT that will take a bit to setting up.
would love an apk of s beam for this device

Bump from a Nexus user.
2 buddies just got S3's. I watched S-beam work well.
I enbled Wifi direct on my Gnex, they could see me on their Wifi direct.
They sent "pairing" requests, but nothing happened on my end.
Seems like something the S-beam app could handle, if we could get an .apk .....

Agreed. S-Beam is an awesome enhancement to Android Beam. Would be great to have it on AOKP or CM9 on my GNex.
Anyone developing this for some custom ROMS?

Video and photo fails .
youtube , webpages and apps work great.
i think you are able to transfer videos and photos if both phones have galaxy S III.
i didn't try transferring from the HOX to the S3

so anyone tried the S Beam apk yet?

been using foxfi since it came out and it is awesome, as far as I know it has always been free
I wonder if this way is easier for ATT to track or know if you have tethered somehow? I usually just root & freeze the ATT tethering manager which works fine and go through the stock tethering manager.
One of the main reasons id root currently is too tether my device for my PS vita etc on the go. But i wanna stay on the stock Rom for a bit so no reason to root if this works.

I agree. Other than having the ability to back up my saved games (Titanium) and removing bloatware, I am running out of reasons to root.
I do hope that this isn't some conspiracy by AT&T to find out who is tethering because THAT WOULD SUCK.
I'm careful with how much data I transfer using foxfi and so far I have not been warned by [email protected]
doesn't like htc phones for wifi
I have a htc inspire phone and a acer a500 tablet. I usa pdanet on the phone to allow me to tether to it from my laptops but doesn't work with the tablet. June Fabrics, pdanet's developer, has come out with a new version that reuires foxfi on the phone and the new pdanet on the tablet. When I click on the pdanet on the tabletnitntells me it work work with bluetooth and to connect using wifi. When I bring up foxfi on the phone and click on the wifi option it tells me the there is a "htc hotspot block" and to use bluetooth mode. Kind of catch 22. Oh well, two more mobile products that don't work!
Good tip

[Q] ICS with wireless tether for root users support

So as you all know ICS has been out for our phones for quite a while now. The roms themselves run great and seem to work seamlessly except for two major issues I have noticed thus far.....GPS and lack of wireless tether for root users support. For this thread I wish to talk about the 2nd one. Has anyone ran across an ICS build for our phones that support the wireless tether for root users app? The reason why I want to use that is because it supports the AD-HOC function which allows me to keep my current data plan and not add on an additional tethering plan. I know there are other wireless tether apps out there but not all of them support the AD-HOC function. It seems like all Cyanogen based builds will support this function but very few other ROMS/Builds will actually support this. Just curious if anyone out there has ran across this before and seen an ICS ROM that does support this. I cannot be the only one out there who uses this am I?
For anyone who is not sure of what I am talking about, google android wifi tether.
PS-After I purchased a bluetooth standalone GPS device my GPS works fine. I suggest other Vibrant owners out there do the same. I picked mine up on ebay for a little under 30 bucks. For that 30 bucks I get the peace of mind that I can go anywhere and not worry about getting lost or carrying around a whole GPS device and my phone. The thing sits tucked away under my stereo and my gps locks on fast and accurately.
IDK bro but I use barnicle wifi tethering...try that

Sony tablet s probably getting jelly bean

Hi guys I wrote to Sony asking about plans on upgrading to jelly beans our tablet and this was the answer I got:
Thank you for contacting Sony Support.
I understand that you want to upgrade the Android from Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwitch) to Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean). Regretfully, due to all the variables involved with, testing, manufacturing, and distribution, we are not able to provide any definite release dates. However, the update will be available very soon and you will be notified with the notifier in the Tablet.

Well that is good news. I recently bought the tab and I love every bit of it. Haven't had any wireless issues. I really hope when sony releases the next update they also enable this device to control PS3. In my opinion that's the major hurdle right now in realizing the full potential of this device as a media controller.
No Wi-Fi issue even before the upgrade.

I know what you mean with the wifi issue - you are connected (wifi icon is present and blue and wifi says 'connected') but basically you have no communication.
somebody recommended "advanced wifi lock", free from Google Play and I'm running that now, so far it seems to fix it.

I'm very happy with my Tablet S, I have had the wifi stall on occasion but a quick off/on fixes it for me, think its happened no more than 5-6 times since I got the tablet.
I'm just hoping to root my official ICS and get write access to the sdcard, I've tried an unofficial CM10 rom on my Motorola Atrix and Jelly Bean with Google Now is definitely a mobile experience.......
But I'll take a Tablet S update for sure.

[Q] VZW GNII Tethering Data Issues

I live about a mile from the nearest VZW LTE tower. I have a direct line of site to it from my back deck. I have the GNII and an iPhone 5 and my previous Android device was a GS3 (Verizon). Tethering with the GS3 was OK, and the iPhone is great, but with the Note its subpar at best. I have the $30 unlimited tethering package (No other High Speed internet options where I live). I have been experiencing data drops when tethering to the note and the speed is definitely lower and less reliable than when I am using the iPhone. I REALLY prefer using my note, does anyone know of any radio fixes or firmware to help correct the issues with GNII tethering? I can post screenshots if necessary, and I do understand that the GS3 used a Quallcomm chipset while the Note uses the Exynos radio, so I expected differences, just not this much. I also will note that using the Note while not tethering doesn't seem to be an issue at all. I can surf, view youtube in HD on the device etc without much buffering time at all, but when I tether it it will drop out several times in just a few minutes. Any info or opinions would be great. Many thanks guys.
I have the same problem from time to time. Keep in mind this phone just out and I'm sure we will get firmware update down the road. I had bluetooth pairing problems with my HTC phone at first when I got them.
If you restart your hotspot when it happens it might reduce the drop out problem. It works for me when I start getting that problem.
I swap back and forth between the official VZ hotspot and the TreE Mod wireless tether.
We use tethering for my ipad, my daughters ipod and a very fast PC laptop.
I find the TrevE mod is consistently faster than the VZ hot spot for some reason, but the reason I use both different methods is that I'm never sure which one will stay connected better on any given day.
One day, one will work better and the next day the other one will work better and I never know ahead of time which will be the right choice that day. I have unlimited data and don't pay to tether so I can't call VZ and ask. I don't really tether all that much or I would pay for it (I'm definitely NOT one of those DBs that uses 150 gigs a month with a free wireless tether and then brags about it) but I just live with the little quirks as I'm getting it free anyway.
I use TrevE mod and have a rock solid connection. I can stay connected for days at a time. Considerably faster than my Galaxy Nexus was.
I've downloaded a couple hundred gigs so far. It NEVER drops connection.
Scott's CleanRom FTW.
This phone has an awesome radio.

You know it's really funny that you mention this because I just got a killer deal on an iPhone 5 and my whole intent was to just flip it and make some $$ and that is exactly what I did! Anyways, I live right next to an LTE tower too and I found that the iPhone 5 sucked at data speed tests and tethering... In fact, the iPhone just SUCKS period!! You gotta be connected to wifi just to download an app over 50mb from the app store???? WTF?? I really didn't know just how lucky us Android folks are! :good: My post is not about bashing the iPhone or anything but I just thought I would chime in cause I had the exact opposite effect of what you are posting about...
BTW: Is it just me or does the iPhone 5 suck REALLY bad?? It was actually dropping frames in some heavy games that I was playing on it... I thought that Crapple was supposed to have the superior gpu? Guess NOT! Well at least I got to play with IOS for about 24 hours before it was sold on Ebay to some poor guy that thinks it's a great phone... Okay, maybe I did post in this thread just to flame.
I have the note 2 and clean rom 4.5 installed. Using stock tetherer I experience tons of dropped data. Anyone have a link to exactly what I need for travel mod? I've tried installing and turning on hot spot and it just doesn't turn on.

XFINITY TV Go - CM11

I have been a lurker on this site for many years and am active on other sites. For some reason I just never posted on xda.
Samsung Galaxy S4 Developer Edition (Verizon), running the latest CM 11 (4.4.2) from the Original Android Development section.
For some reason the Xfinity TV Go app doesn't recognize that I am on Verizon. It will not let me stream media unless I am on WiFi. It says something is wrong with the playlist and it times out. On WiFi it works as it is supposed to.
Is there any way to trick the app so that it knows I am on Verizon so I can stream media over their network? I don't really know how long this issue has been present, I just noticed this weekend on a semi road trip. I usually just hot spot my phone and watch the app on my N7, but I made the major mistake of forgetting my N7 this weekend.
Anyone ever see this issue? Know of a fix? Link? I did some googling, but nothing really came up. It was mainly people trying stream media over another network (TMO, AT&T, etc.) which doesn't allow this.
I was going to post this in the thread for CM 11, but my post count is so low I am only allow to post in Q&A for now.
you have to enable it to stream over the network within the app's settings menu.

Thanks for the reply, but I had the 'Use Cellular Data" already checked within the app.
I thought it might be specific to CM11 or ASOP in general, because there is no real AOSP phone on Verizon anymore. Anyone with a Gnex able to use this app?
Attached is the error it gives me. Google didn't help too much.
