8gb tablet ? ? connecting via connectify to laptop - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

Ok. I've got the 8gb nook tablet rooted and have connectify on my laptop to try to connect through it as my router doesn't reach far enough...anyway...I am able to connect but with no internet access so i'm wondering if anyone can help me figure out why....
I run busybox ifconfig in terminal emu. and get inet addr: 192.168.147.101 Bcast:192.168.147.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 UP Broadcast running multicast mtu:1500 Metric:1 Rxpackets:363 errors:0dropped:0overruns:0frame:0 Tx packets:620errors:0dropped:0overruns:0frame:0....etc....
seems to me that it's connected to the virtual miniport which has internet access and yet I can't access internet on the nook...can anyone help me figure out why...yes..I have searched..all day for 2 days actually before posting
I'm also getting a notice that says wifi issue error 105

i googled it and there was a Looonnnnggg dilog with :
"this steps fixed my problem. Hope it may help u too.
1. Click Start. Type cmd in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
2. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
ipconfig /flushdns (there is a space between ipconfig and / )
It will show the message successfully flushed the DNS resolver cache.
3. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
ipconfig /registerdns (there is a space between ipconfig and / )
4. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
ipconfig /all (there is a space between ipconfig and /)
The ipconfig /all command displays Windows TCP/IP settings for all your network adapters.
If your IP address for your Local Area Connection is either 0.0.0.0 or 169.x.x.x (where x is any number), then your computer is not getting an IP address from the router.
If that is the case, try this:
· ipconfig /release in the command prompt and press ENTER
· ipconfig /renew in the command prompt and press ENTER
Test it again by typing ipconfig /all to see what the address is? (If you are on a home router, it should start with either 192.168.1.x or 192.168.0.x or 10.x.x.x)
1 0"

unfortunately that doesn't help with what I'm trying to do. I'm trying to connect my tablet to my computer through a virtual router with a program called connectify..It's connecting just not getting internet access...sigh hopefully someone will get adhoc working on the tablet soon

Does connectify broadcast in ad-hoc? If so, there's a mod somewhere around here that allows the nook to see ad-hoc.

connectify works fine with mine. it just takes a few tries to get it to connect. if u can't see the wifi network or it just doesn't want to connect no matter how many times you try it, try rebooting the tablet and it should work. as long as your connectify is running then there is no reason why the tablet can't connect...
btw what security are you using for connectify? WEP WPA WPA2?

You mean like connecting to another ad-doc or creating one of your own for others to connect? For the second one, you need barnacle from market - works great.

there is a program called Connectify which use your laptop wifi to make a hotspot area.. you can connect your android phone to the said hotspot. www.connectify.me only available to windows 7 and windows 2008
I am assuming that you already know how to a create adhoc network on your laptop and share your internet connection.
X10 can connect with adhoc networks, but you will need to set it up manually. The steps are outlined here. Root required.
From the article here:
Windows 7 comes with a new feature for sharing your computers internet connection. Now you can do it wirelessly. Well, As long as your system’s wireless network adapter supports Windows 7 “virtual wi-fi” feature, you can do it.
Next you need to check if your network card has the latest driver to support the feature. Intel, Broadcom, Realtek and some other NIC makers provide such drivers.
If the two above conditions are met, you are good to read on …
1. Open an elevated command prompt (Type “CMD.EXE” in the start menu search bar, then right click the cmd.exe link and select “Run as Administrator”).
2. In the command window, type: netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=MyNet key=MyPassword
Replace “MyNet” with the name you want to use for the wireless network and replace “MyPassword” with your chosen password for accessing it)
3. Press Enter.
4. Now type: netsh wlan start hostednetwork
5. Press Enter.
6. Open Control Panel and go to Network and Sharing Center.
7. Click Change Adapter Settings.
8. Right click your Internet connection and select Properties.
9. Click the Sharing tab.
10. Check the box that says “Allow other network users to connect.”
11. Choose your virtual wi-fi adapter and click OK.
Now wi-fi enabled gadget (mobile phone, laptop, ipod, etc) within range should see your new wireless network and others can connect to it if they know the password.
if you've turned off your computer and need to enable this feature, you can just type "netsh wlan start hostednetwork"
Connectify is a good option though if you don't to do the steps above.
====
if this isn't about the topic then ignore 'coz i'm a bit confused as to what you wanted to do.
the question is do you want to share your laptop's internet connection so that your x10 mini can connect to it?
OR
do you want to create share your x10 mini's internet connection so that others can connect to it? (Barnacle is the answer)
anyway, as far as i know, x10 mini/mini pro can't connect to any adhoc network.
I have xperia x10 mini pro. Trying to set up wi-fi adhoc (IBSS) with a laptop.
Changed / system / etc / tiwlan.ini
Code:
...
WiFiAdhoc = 1
dot11DesiredSSID = x10mp
dot11DesiredBSSType = 0
...
and / data / misc / wifi / wpa_cupplicant.conf
Code:
ctrl_interface = wlan0
wpa_supplicant GROUP = system
update_config = 1
eapol_version = 1
ap_scan = 2
network = {
ssid = "x10mp"
scan_ssid = 1
key_mgmt = NONE
mode = 1
frequency = 2412
}
When I turn on wi-fi on the phone immediately goes to connect to the correct grid, for a long time hanging message "Obtaining IP address ...", and then says" failed ".
What's the problem? What's best way to organize such a network?

Use PC internet connection on phone through USB!

USB tethering on froyo works if you need to use the phone's internet on PC. Sometimes, we just need to do it the other way around (lets say the PC doesn't have a wireless card, or we only have ad-hoc networks that are not discoverable without patching) and use our PC's net on android through USB.
Few people have done it using bridges. I did it using squid proxy server on ubuntu.
1.) Install squid and allow http access to all required clients.
2.) Connect the phone with usb tethering on.
3.) Ubuntu detects it as usb0. Now change the ip of usb0 from 'Automatic DHCP' to 'Shared to other computers'.
4.) Fire up the terminal emulator and enter the following.
#su
#netcfg usb0 dhcp
If all went well, you should now be able to connect to the internet.
Tried it and it's not working for me...
Or maybe i didn't setup squid right.
I'm not so good on ubuntu OS
I tried making a bridge connection on windows...the networks
The network seems to be connected but no internet connection...
Is it necessary to have Ubuntu OS?
Maybe some another how-to will help:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=793102
To setup squid to work:
type in:
sudo gedit /etc/squid/squid.conf
In that file find the section called
# ACCESS CONTROLS
Under the section find the line
#Recommended minimum configuration:
and add this line next to it
acl all src all
then find the section
# TAG: http_access
Under this section find the line
#Default:
and add the following line to look like
#Default:
http_access allow all
Close the file and restart squid as:
sudo start squid
That should setup squid to share your internet on all clients.
If required, reboot.
You can try out a similar approach on any other distro other than ubuntu.
i tried several searches about this topic, but none of them succeeded,
any update on this?

Well, you can virtualize it in Virtual box. It's free for personal use.
by the way what is the squid your talking about?

Come on.. if you don't already know what ubuntu and squid are there's no point in trying this.
Ubuntu = Linux, that's another operating system. Squid is a proxy.
You ashould at least have the decency of Googling those for yourself..

Hi guys,
Do you know why I wouldn't be able to see "USB tethering" option? No matter what I did so far, all I can see is the "Portable Wi-Fi hotspot" option and that works fine. But I need to use the USB Tethering!!!
Thanks for the help!
If someone is having the same problem as me (ie usb tethering mode not visible) just use a program called togglesettings lite. It can turn on the usb tethering for you. Now the reverse usb tethering works for me like a charm. Peace!

[Q] How to connect to VPN?

I'm not sure whether this post belongs here, but I have googled high and low and I have not found anything that directly pertains to my Samsung Galaxy S2 issue. And here at XDA, the VPN questions seem to be about private VPNs (not commercial).
I am currently running Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread.XXKG6
I follow these steps for connecting to a LT2P
www_dot_hopthewall_dot_com/wiki/wiki/Android_L2TP_Over_IPSec
And these for PPTP
www_dot_hopthewall_dot_com/wiki/wiki/Installing_personalVPN-PPTP_on_Android_Mobile_Phone
I have tried the PPTP and L2TP
Both fail to connect
L2TP yields:
"Unable to connect to network. Try again?"
But no additional error message.
PPTP however, seems to allow the connection.
I connected a few times.
I used pptp.sfo.witopia.net. as the VPN server
That seemed to let me connect a few times;
and according to hide-my-ip.com I had an L.A. IP
But now, when I try to connect, I'm getting an error message that reads:
"Server hung up. User name or password incorrect. Try again?"
But I didn’t do or change anything. I just tried to connect as usual.
I've tried
restarting the phone.
waiting a while.
Connecting with the computer (connects without a problem)
I tried connecting to the different VPN servers.
I also tried connecting changing the VPN server from URL to an IP address,
but that just tells me "Unable to connect to network. Try again?"
I am at a loss...
I have tried at home, on my wifi account...
The same one that my computer is on, but no dice.
The VPN service provider is also at a loss.
They said "...iPhones connect all day..." (talk about a kick in the teeth)
They asked me if I wanted to cancel my account and request a refund.
Nice.
Thanks for the replies.
This forums are always so helpful.
No, that's okay, don't get up. I'll get that.
A two part work around I found was:
PART I
Sharing the VPN Connection Over WiFi by Converting my Laptop into WiFi VPN Router. An article by BESTVPNSERVICE.COM
Using a Windows 7 machine with a Wi-Fi NIC
1) Click on your computers start button and in the search box type “cmd” and wait for it to appear on the menu.
2) After it appears, right click on it and select “Run As Administrator”.
3) When the Black Command Prompt Opens up, type the following command and press enter
4) netsh wlan show drivers
5) You will see something like the following image. If the ‘Hosted Network Supported’ (in the red square) say ‘Yes’, it means the driver is installed and if it says ‘No’, download the drivers.
6) Once it is made sure that you have the required driver, it’s time to set it up.
7) Type netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=test key=password. Following Screen would appear. (Devices will detect network SSID as “test” change it to anything you want. Moreover, ‘key’ is your password which in this case is ‘password’, change it to whatever you want, I would suggest you to not to use numbers in password)
8 ) Then type, netsh wlan start hostednetwork. You will see the messages illustrated in the snap shot.
9) If you see the message that the ‘hosted network couldn’t be started’, then your WiFi driver is outdated, the best way to update the WiFi driver is Run you Windows Update or download the latest version from its official website.
10) Now that we have setup hosted network, we will make sure that it is shared on public Wi-Fi.
11) To do this, click on your Wi-Fi signal buttons on the bottom right hand corner of your screen.
12) Click on ‘Open Network and Sharing Center’.
13) Then click on Change adapter settings.
14) Click on the Connection that has description of ‘Your Created VPN Connection’ and right click on the Icon to go to its properties.
15) In Properties, go to ‘Sharing’ tab and check on ‘Allow Other Network User to connect through this computer…’
16) From the drop down menu of ‘Home Networking Connection’, Select the connection which had a description of ‘Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter’/’Virtula AP’ or it can be ‘Wireless Network Connection 2’ as in my case.
17) Check on the ‘Allow other network users to control or disable….’ Option as well.
18) Click ok and you are all set to go now.
19) Connect your VPN and ask your Friends or Colleague to discover your VPN enabled WiFi Connection.
20) Now, whenever you will restart your computer, your Shared WiFi connection will be disabled. You will have to reenter only the following command in the command prompt to enable it again.
netsh wlan start hostednetwork (or create a custom batch file for this, if you want to avoid reentering the command every time).
PART II
If the wi-fi direct on your phone isn't discovering your freshly created network,
you may need enable Ad Hoc connections for it.
For that I looked at an article here; but instead of Root Explorer is simply used ES Explorer:
Download this version of wpa_supplicant
Like I said, I used "ES Explorer"
• use "ES Explorer" to mount /system/bin/ and make a backup of wpa_supplicant
• rename the current one to wpa_supplicant.bak and copy the new wpa_supplicant to /system/bin
• then we need to adjust the permissions on the file to:
ticked - All options in the read and execute columns; and write column owner row
unticked - write column & group row; write column & others row.
• change /system/bin back to read only
• disable and re-enable wireless
• now your adhoc wireless network should be listed with the other wireless networks and you can connect.
After this two maneuvers, I was able to connect my phone to my laptop using my laptop's internet access and thus connecting to the VPN.
I find that the order of network activation matters.
What I mean is:
First connect to the internet (router, modem, or however that may be)
Then connect to the VPN
And then activate and connect to the hostednetwork.
I hope this helps someone, despite the fact that you have to be within wifi range of your windows machine. It's not quite the same as being on the streets and connecting to your VPN -but Android can't [consistently and reliably] connect to VPNs. And since no one replied to me here it stands to reason that no one knows how to get Android to connect to commercial VPN services (not even WiTopia's tech support).

[Q] wifi change mac address

Firt, Great site very helpfull. Sorry my english.
I need to change my wifi mac adress on my huawei u8180 with ROM CyanogenMod 7.2.0-RC0 U8160 (thx is great).
I have try to change/modify nvram.txt but no good
Also try with softwares :
- com.jiaofamily.android.mac: change mac for huawei (it´s old). it can read the mac but can´t change it (unsuported device)
-Set MAC adress : cant read mac adress
both don´t ask root right.
Any idea?
You can spoof your MAC using busybox
For instance:
http://blog.thecodecracker.com/hacks/spoof-mac-address-in-android/
First, you need Busybox and Terminal Emulator installed. And you need root.
After you have that, open up Terminal Emulator and give it superuser permissions by typing
"su" (without quotes)
and press enter. You should be asked if you want to allow it to have superuser access. Press allow
Next, type in
"busybox ifconfig". (make sure your wifi is on first). Look for either eth0 or wlan0. Whichever one is on the list is your wifi device. Keep that in mind.
Next, type in
"busybox ifconfig wlan0(or eth0) hw ether XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX"
with the xx's being your MAC address you want to change it to.
Now, this is the important part!
It WILL NOT change your MAC address properly if your wifi is not off first! You must have it off, and then turn it on (through the status bar toggle) and then quickly hit enter! If it says no such device found you must press Volume Up+W to automatically reenter your last command and press enter again until it does not say no such device found.
I find it works best when I do Volume up+W and then hit enter multiple times.
To check if your MAC address has been changed, go to your wifi settings, click the menu key and select advanced. Your current MAC address will be under the MAC address section.
Good luck!
Sent from my GT-I9100
You can also do this without having to use Terminal Emulator by using the adb.
With your device properly setup for development on your pc just type adb shell in your terminal on your pc and then you can enter your busybox commands.This still does require that your root and have busybox installed!
thx

How can I make the wifi shutdown and start on the terminal?
My idea, it´s to make:
wifi off
wifi on
busybox ifconfig wlan0(or eth0) hw ether XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX
Any adeia?
trouble
Hi,
it changes my MAC, however I can’t connect to any wifi network! It always say that the password is bad, or in open networks, it hangs on retriving ip address.
But if I use:
busybox ip link set wlan0(or eth0) address XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX
It work at the first time or second.
Insted of turn the wifi off and on and quickly run the command.
I use the terminal with su:
svc wifi disable
svc wifi on
(need to wait 0.5s to proced)
busybox ip link set wlan0(or eth0) address XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX
and its done .
it will be great if an app developer can make an app to run this command automatically when we want to connect to wifi. it will make the mac address not permanent but almost.

You must have rooted device and busybox installed. First switch to su and type commands.

m8s (suspected clone) IP/MAC address change for eth0 on reboot bug.(other issues too)

Good morning everyone. As per the thread title, My girlfreind has a TV box that I suspect is a clone (the update ROMs from chinagadget review wont flash from TWRP).
This device is connected to her ADSL router/modem via a LAN cable and everytime the device boots, the MAC address for the LAN interface is randomised, causing the router to issue a new IP address via DHCP. (I cannot get the device to communicate with static IP)
it's running a lollipop based ROM at the moment (LMY47V.20160505 TEST-KEYS) is reported in settings.
I haven't removed the case yet, to investigate the circuitboard/RAM manufacturer (and don;t know how to check via software, if the wifi/bt module is made by broadcom/atheros) but my gut feeling is screaming "it's a clone". (If it helps, the TWRP backup I performed has saved to a sub-folder called "k200")
She purchased the device from Amazon UK and the majority of apps on Play Store give "version isn;t compatible with this device" error. I've tried to spoof other device in build.prop and with an app called "market helper" but no joy yet.
Any help appreciated
Has anyone got any advoce for me?

I also have this issue with my Kata Box 2 (Amlogic S905)
I was also very frustrated when I learned that the mac address was always set at random every time I reboot.
I've read that you need to use USB burning tool to hard code the mac address for your android box.
Here's what I did to solve this.
you need:
a rooted android box
busy box
Terminal emulator
1st method:
Make sure that the ethernet cable is unplugged.
Run terminal emulator.
Run these commands in lower case:
su
ip link set eth0 down
ip link set eth0 address 01:23:45:67:89:10 (change the values of your desired mac address)
ip link set eth0 up
2nd method:
su
busybox ifconfig eth0 down
busybox ifconfig eth0 hw ether 01:23:45:67:89:10 (change the values of your desired mac address)
busybox ifconfig eth0 up
You can run run these on startup using Script Manager.
I tried both method 1 and 2 and works very well.
To verify the if everything was set properly you can run these commands:
ip link show
And
busybox ifconfig
so far on my end its working great. Im now able to reserve the IP address via MAC address.

Thanks again.
