[Q] GTalk - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I've been stupid and in order to clean up both the in-built and external memory (I've taken efs backups and the like) formatted both the and then flashed the appropriate rom and kernel. However, I've now missing GTalk and I can't seem to find it in the Play Store or an obvious/easy way to get it back. Suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
EDIT: Resolved, opened up a Sammy based rom and was able to find the Talk apk there.

u need the gtalk were its og placed in sgs2 right ,flash the stock rom ,or the other way is revert one step back of stock rom and update via kies....hope u got it..

How to incorporate 7-17 update into Eris ROM

Okay I made a custom ROM using the 2.1 RUU file and Android Kitchen. It works great but now I'd like to make a ROM with the 7-17 ota update already incorporated into it. I am using the same 2.1 RUU as a base but got lost after that. I thought it might be as simple as cutting and pasting the updated files into the RUU but it doesn't appear to be that simple. Can any one point me in the right direction?
well i did it the way it was posted in the kitchen thread, copied the boot and system image off of a backup. didn't really want to do it thios way but thought it was teh safest. it appears to be working, i have a rom with the 7-17 update + overclock kernal + root + wireless tether + some garbage apps removed + zip aligned apps and it appears to be working properly. did try and put aps2sd on too but haven't seen if it works yet.
using the boot and system image from a backup doesn't make the best rom's. facebook for htc sense will not sync with my contacts, the recovery image appears to be messed up, or at least that is what rom manager says. in fact rom manager barely functions. fortunately was able to restore a backup using clockwork mod recovery.
there has got to be a better way to get the 7-17 update into a rom.
You can take my rom as a base

thank you for letting me use yours as a base. i was going to ask you how you did it as i know that you had gotten the update in as soon as it came out. i think this is going to be more stable then copying it from my phone.
thanks again t2noob for letting me use your rom. i finally got a chance to work with it and am happy to have a stable rom to use to my liking. i'd been having problems with deleting all of amazons files, it always leaves a file in menu>setting>applications>manage applications (com.amazonmp3.apk) which bothered me to no end. tried everything to delete it but it always came back. even tried your plainjane v2 and still had it in there after using the bloatware removal zip. just bugged the hell out of me. i found the only way to remove it permanently is to remove the app in the rom so it never gets installed in the first place. like the work you've been doing on here keep it up.

Hey t2noob what method/process did you use ? With there being a few options i was curious as to what worked best for you...
I used a system image file but would prefer a cleaner method.
Thxs!

I've been looking for this July OTA file just about since it disappeared anyway.
Do any of you have a link to it?
I am making an ODEX'd version of Ivan's that has this integrated. I really dislike De-Odexing, and what it does to my space in /data, so I'm making my own flashable .zip.
Can't even find the link to the 7/17 OTA now (the original one doesn't work). Google yields 0 useful results.
I might have it at home on a flash drive. I'll check after work.
I think I found it on the linux partition of my laptop.
Uploaded it to megauploads.

[Q] Verizon Backup Assistant

Hi all. Noob here. First I want to thank all of you that are writing these amazing roms, apps and roots. Top notch.
I am running BAMF Remix 1.5 and love it! I have not had any issues with it at all. My question is this. I need to load Verizon Backup Assistant in order to recover all of my contacts that I backed up from my BB Storm. With this ROM the verizon backup assistant is no longer available. I would prefer to not have to go back to stock in order to recover these contacts, so is there any way to get the backup assistant without having to grenade BAMF, go to stock, recover contacts, then go back to BAMF?
Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to provide me.

Verizon Backup
i had the saem thing for a little bit... all you have to doo is go back to the page that you down loaded the rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1009876 and then scroll to the bottom of the first link and you will see all the zip files you need to install. along with the verizon backup and some other good ones. you will need to eather use Rom manager and install from your sd card or use appinstaller and still install from your sd card.... hope this helps

I saw all of those but assumed (shame on me) that since I was using the "REMIX" that it did not apply. So I guess it is safe to assume that it can be used on the "Remix" version.
I am surprised that a Verizon store transferred the contacts to a rooted phone?
At any rate, thank you both for your prompt responses.
Downloaded and installed backup_asst via recovery manager from the Das BAMF 1.5 thread here
When I look for it in apps it is not listed. It does say that it was successfully installed via recovery manager.
Any help on this one?
Never mind, figured it out... did not show up in apps, so I went into the "Setup" app and lo and behold there it was. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction!
You might want to consider backing up your contacts to your Google account since most roms do not support backup assistant because it is... Crap. Then when you flash new roms and sign in your contacts will already be there and you don't have to worry about the extra crapware.
True. I just needed the backup assistant long enough to get my contacts back on my phone. Now that they are there, I have already backed up to google and uninstalled backup assistant.

Not enough posts under my belt... but thanks!
Another way to do it (This is the way I did it):
Download Google Sync for Blackberry to back up your contacts to your Google Account, and when you sync your TBolt, all of your Google contacts should be there. That's the way I got my contacts from my Curve to my Moto Droid...
To aid customer's who were converting from Features Phones (using Backup Assistant) to Android phones, VZW used to have a walk through when BA wasn't available on Android Phones.. It showed how to use VZW's backup assistant web site on your PC, export contacts to .CSV, and import the .CSV into your gmail account.
While that walk through has been changed with BA now being available for most/all android phones, the BA web site still allows you to export to CSV, and Gmail still allows you to import it.

[Q] 2 Noob Q's: Font Support and CWM

Hi all,
I have spent a good part of 7-8 hours traversing these forums reading about the S2, but if somebody could give me confirmation/clarity for peace of mind before I start to play around with it - it would be greatly appreciated!
1) How does one install fonts onto the S2 that are not native (e.g. Arabic/Hebrew, etc.)? -> is it as simple as transferring them to a specific folder, or is it nested in the kernel or a 'base rom' layer of the phone? (I ask because I know CM7 has those languages support but I don't necessarily want to use CM7).
2) Is there anyway of restoring a CWM image file by 'pushing' it to the phone via a cable? e.g. if I broke my phone installing custom roms or a bad kernel and it doesn't want to even launch into CWM (is that even possible as is on separate partition?), can I somehow connect it to the PC and push my CWM image back to the phone to completely restore it?
Thanks!
You can install your own fonts, but it has to be done at shell level, there's no "Add font" option anywhere.
There's no remote-push for CWM. It would be very useful if someone could get CWM to generate Odin-friendly images but as far as I'm aware no one has done it.
Thanks for that!
Is it actually possible to use Odin to generate a full backup image? This is the first I have heard of it - would you be able to provide a link (couldn't find one myself).
Thanks!

To make a kind of "full backup", you need to root your phone.
I used the corresponding CF-Root kernel for my stock ROM.
Then you can easily use the backup feature of CWM Manager, which is included in CF-Root kernel.
To recover such a backup, you have to use CWM (or CWM Manager app) again.
If your phone is "broken" and CWM does not work any more, you first have to "repair" it => do an emergency recovery with KIES or flash a ROM via Odin (if download mode is still working).
Then root your phone to get CWM (or CWM Manager app) again, and recover the system from your previously created backup.
That's the theory ... fortunately I never had to recover my system that way ... yet.
Thanks to both of you! - now time to play around!
(given you both thanks for actually taking the time to explain - always good to find those that help)

[Q] sgs2 deleted camera apk and odex

Hi everybody,
I accidently deleted both the apk and odex from/system/app while trying to get rid of that annoying shutter noise. For the first time in my life i haven't backed up the file (or have a cwm backup) anybody be able to lend me a hand in getting the app back and running? Is it even possible with the TW framework thingy?
Cheers in advance

c save messing flash a stock rom .
jje
thanks for the quick reply, I tried putting the files back into the app folder and anytime i run the camera app from homescreen/app drawer, the screen appears to rotate( as when the app normally loads) and then crashes. any help anyone?
Flash the same stock ROM back without wiping.
thanked everybody it's sorted. tried flashing stock yesterday but kept getting FCs in camera, so didnt think it'd work this time (i used the same rom and everything) oh well it works thats the main thing.
cheers again

Deleted Phone.apk

I deleted my the Phone.apk file on my rooted Galaxy Player 4.0 (YP-G1CWY/XAA) running the stock rom awhile back to save on battery life.
I have done the same thing on my Nook Color, and figured that it wouldn't cause any problems, as the Player isnt a phone.
Recently tried to record some video, and found I was unable to do so. After doing some research I found out that deleting phone.apk causes the stock camera app, but not 3rd party camera apps, to stop functioning.
While I was sure to backup the file when I originally deleted the file, the backup has been lost in the intervening months.
Do I just need to find a specific phone.apk file for my device and return it to the correct directory?
I assume a factory reset will solve the problem, but I would rather not try that unless I have to.
Thanks!
a factory reset will not solve the problem, since it was a system .apk it will reset everything except for that particular apk.

In which case do I need to track down a copy of that specific apk or will I need to download odin and perform a full recovery?
put back the phone.apk file back on your device. Go to a ROM(best if its that ROM you are using) Find the phone.apk, and take it out. Then transfer it into your device, and use Root Explorer or something and put back phone.apk.
i dont think that will work because i uninstalled the screencapture.apk from my 5.0 and i backed it up so i tried to reinstal and it would not let me... but try aznflawless' way first if not you may want to flash a stock based rom...

This seemed to work for me!
I tried looking in various roms before, but they were all formatted for flashing with odin.
I should have just went straight for the cwm package. *slaps forehead*
Thanks so much!
i shall try that sir thanks
As others said... find the phone.apk... preferably from the same rom you are using... use RootExplorer and copy the phone.apk to the system/apps folder. Change the permissions to match the other apps in that folder... reboot and you are good to go.
For your future reference, it is not a good idea to delete system apps without knowing what they actually do... I think you made a real good guess since phone.apk should not be on a device that is actually not a phone by function. For example, the Android Market app is actually called phonesky.apk or vendor.apk... nothing like what you would normally guess it to be, such as market.apk or something to that matter. So if I were you and I wanted to keep using my device and not brick it, I would becareful what I delete out of /system and it's sub folders...
Good luck...
Try to reinstall your custom rom!!
