Hi guys, I read these forums occasionally, but this is my first time to post. My problem is (seemingly) pretty straightforward.
When I connect my Droid RAZR MAXX or ASUS Transformer to my HD monitor, the video displays fine, but there is no sound. I suspect this is because the monitor does not have any speakers, but I was hoping there would be a way to just let the audio play from the device. That's what my laptop does when connected via VGA (which might not support audio anyway; I don't know a lot about the different inputs/outputs).
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
arnax
VGA does not support audio. Ive never done any of these but maybe they will work. Get a hdmi to VGA adaptar and then use an auxillary cord to hook up to monitor. Plug a headset into your phone to hear it that way. Or the simple solution get speakers for ur monitor.
As far as I know there is no way to use hdmi without the audio being played through the hdmi. Not just for phones but everything hdmi.
Thanks, I tried using headphones with my phone and that worked, so I suppose hooking up speakers to it should work too. I don't believe my monitor has a way to hook up speakers directly unfortunately...

Hey. I was wondering how the TV out works on the Vibrant. My last phone was a ipohne 3g and I used a programs called TV out to connect it to my car audio system. With that setup I was able to watch Slingplayer through the car audio display. When I check the TV out box on the Vibrant, I don't get video (just audio). I was told that video can be achieved through the 3.5mm headphone jack. I don't see how this is possible and I don't believe the mini usb is capable of audio/video. Can someone confirm this? Is there a way to utilize the slingplayer the same way as I did with the iphone?
Thanks in advance,
ScottZ0
You have to switch red with yellow or some sh¡t like that

I recently received my 3.5mm to rca plug from amazon for about $3 shipping included. Do you have the specific plug? I'm assuming you do since you said you used to do it with your iphone. Connect only 2 of the 3 rca plugs to the tv. Connect the white male plug for audio to the white female port and then connect the red male plug to the yellow female port for video (YES, YOU HEARD RIGHT. FOR SOME REASON THE RED MALE PLUG WORKS AS VIDEO INSTEAD OF AUDIO). Make sure your tv's input is set to VIDEO 1 or VIDEO 2 etc. Then make sure to check the tv out check box.

The Vibrant's pretty picky about the cables. The correct cable is a standard Red/White/Yellow composite cable, but the wiring is non-standard, so you may have to switch the red and yellow connectors. Also, make sure the plug is plugged ALL THE WAY into the 3.5mm jack on the phone - it's easy to leave out one click. Even still, I've run into a couple cables that would not work no matter what I did (I think this is a grounding issue.)
I recommend the $3 cable from amazon. Took about 3 days for me to receive the cable. The cable was located in New Jersey and I live in Maryland.

Motorola oem cable on ebay for about 5 bucks works correctly, yellow for video and red/white for audio.

Hey Scott,
Hope all is well with you - I too have a Vibrant - did you get the cabling figured out? What worked. Look forward to your reply. Thanks in advance - cheers
I've just received the MHL adapter and am excited to be able to use my monitor to display the phone's screen. But my monitor does not have a audio output, so the audio through the HDMI cannot be played. I've rooted and am on the Cognition 1.07 ROM, So is there a hack to route the audio through the 3.5 mm jack when sending the video through the HDMI using the MHL adapter?
Thanks guys,
Did you work out a way to do this? I am thinking of buying an MHL adapter but like you my display does not have sound.
I need to know an answer to this! My monitor doesnt have speakers and theres no way for me to hear the video!
My Dell monitor has 5.1 channel analog 3.5mm sockets at the back for HDMI audio output.
on my SG2 I still can use the audio jack for audio output (headset or just go into any amplifier-audio_in, or any computer etc....) when I use the HDMI cable for TV.
Hey RbbChan what ROM are you using?

Hey how did you get it to work? Which ROM and Kernel?
Same problem for me guys...that's a very unpleasent situation!
It can be solved via software though, I'm pretty sure because there is a lag of about half a second between the audio disappears after I connect the HDMI cable, it can't be hardware only.
Is there a place in this forum when we can ask developers to try and find a fix in their custom ROMs ?
I tried this and it worked (audio through my headphones) but the audio also came out through my TV.
VillianRom 2.42/Ninphetamine Kernel.

Muting the TV ought to do the trick,no?
Thats always a viable option.

Thank you Killer Bee! It works!!!
I know this thread is a couple of months old but I just wanted to say this saved me from buying an unnecessary $100+ HDMI audio breakout. The headphone jack fit the bill since my new monitor doesn't have audio output.
I'm having the same issue as OP (no sound through headphone jack on SGSII while MHL adapter plugged in). From the other posts it seems like using VillianRom 2.42/Ninphetamine Kernel would work?
Would any other roms & kernels work?
Thanks
I have searched without any luck for a stereo dock that doesnt use the headphone jack. I have a logitech for my old iphone that u just set the phone in it and use the remote. Has anyone come across one for the galaxy s2 yet?
I believe there's one made by Philips which is available at Best Buy.

thanks,
I found this one too AS851 (Cant link yet). Comes with a remote and is 30 watts. They say you cant stream music thru the micro usb, but then how does the unit send audio and video to a HDMI cable, so I would think its possible. shrug

All of those docks use Bluetooth to stream the audio. From what I know the USB port on the bottom doesn't have the ability to natively send audio out of the pins. I would love to have a simple dock too for this phone that would let audio out without having to jack in on the top of the phone, but it's just not designed that way.
I used to have an ATT "Fuze" (touch pro) - used to have to carry a dongle everywhere with me to plug in headphones. I'm much happier that I don't need a dongle, but it does suck to have to plug in 2 things in the car to get audio and charge at the same time.

I just bought a Lapdock 100 and everything seemed to work; but I realize that there's no sound from the lapdock.
I've tried playing music and videos, having volume set to max, and it doesn't work. The player shows that there's a song/video playing but I can't hear anything.
I tried with a factory reset, using stock EU ROM, in case it was a software problem, but still don't work. And if someone calls me, the ringtone will sound from the phone; not from the lapdock (I don't know if it should be this way)
If a connect the headphones at the same time it's connected to the lapdock, then the sound works through the headphones.
I also have tried to connect the phone via hdmi cable to my TV, and the sound works, so the hdmi slot from my phone is not damaged.
Does anybody know what could be the problem? Could it be related to the fact that the Lapdock is from Verizon? (it would be strange I think)
Thanks!
Well I'm no android expert to say the least but I have a lapdock 500 and sometimes when I connect my phone the audio through the lapdock speakers is distorted.
The way I fix my audio problems is I disconnect the phone, play a song in phone mode, pause, connect the phone to the lapdock, and then when I start playing the song again on the lapdock it's fixed.
If that doesn't fix your problem then you should try hooking another device up to the lapdock to see if the speakers work. I know it might seem odd but turns out that any version of the lapdock product line can actually be used as an external monitor for any device with HDMI. All you need is an HDMI female to HDMI micro male adapter and an HDMI micro female to HDMI micro female adapter and with a regular sized HDMI you can hook up any device that supports HDMI to your lapdock.
Any idea if this would work?

I'm trying to make a one-connection, more or less universal, high quality audio and charger set up for my truck. Since the DAC is USB powered i'm not sure where the power would come from in this case. The phone or that adapter. I just like the simplicity of this unit for what i am doing (it's all going in my dash).
EDIT: I took the plunge and ordered a bunch of bits that SHOULD work (a UCA202 was cheaper, so ordered it). I'll take pics and document the setup and installation, post it all when its ready. It'll take a few weeks for the stuff to get here.
What are you trying to do? Give yourself an entertainment centre in your truck?
What I have done in my truck is use a Bluetooth stereo for streaming all audio from my HTC. If I were to install one HDMI screen I could have HD TV.
For charging, I just use a USB adapter in the cigarette lighter. Make sure you get one capable of outputting 1A or more, and also fools the phone into thinking it's connected to the mains.
When at a festival the other year, I used the tailgate as a makeshift bar, and the phone was streaming music over Bluetooth. I also had the stereo remote to control the volume, and used the air conditioning to chill some drinks. Although, will use a mini fridge next time as I used a shed loads of Diesel
I have a pioneer head ( http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Car/CD-Receivers/FH-P8000BT ) and an iBolt cradle. What I was hoping for was to use USB to provide power and use a DAC to get better sound quality from the tunes that I get over bluetooth. This deck also has an auxiliary in on the back, but trying to avoid using the amped headphone out. I went with this deck because of the connection options and didn't care about touch screens. That's what my HOX+ or Nexus 7 are for. So having a single USB connection for everything would be great. Pretty much the only thing that iFail devices have on us.

Here is my start. I didn't get the DAC yet, and I need to wait for USB OTG with Charging before I can, but the set up is ready for it!
Sure looks good, but I'm unsure how the sound quality will be, I'm not sure how the DAC works by accessing the USB.. Does it just see it as a USB storage device? If you're playing MP3's anyway, why not just stream over Bluetooth. Once the track is digital, Idon't think that you would want to convert to analogue unless it's playing it directly.
Are your MP3's a decent bit-rate? I have never had an issue with MP3's over Bluetooth. I normally download weekly music podcasts and stream those.
I'm gonna chime in hear and say just bought the pioneer Afh x5500, and although my EVO LTE streams spotify and stock music player over Bluetooth, it does not send track info whatsoever. My note 2 did but, I prefer the EVO. So, I'm waiting for the 8500 to come in now because it has hdmi input onboard so it should be able to take hdmi to mhl and then perform correctly. As well as apradio functions. Anyone have any experience with this? Or, does anyone know how to get Bluetooth to stream song/album info to the head unit?

One of the #1 reasons I got the HOX+ was the 64GB storage for my FLAC collection. Originally this concept I started while I had the Galaxy S3, which with a kernel and CM 10 can enable the DAC output while allowing the device to still recieve the charge.
That said, the deck you mentioned with HDMI might just do the trick too. And it really would be universal. Hmm.... I like this deck (It was old when I got it) because I don't really care for touch/dvd in my dash. This has a big rotary control knob, and I even have the lights turn off at night so I just control everything from the phone (except Volume). But i'll look into the one you suggest.
Anyway. This set up will do the trick for now. I hard wired the charger and AUX into the stereo harness so it looks clean and stock. I doubt I'll really tell much of difference anyway without the DAC at this point. I'm not getting any line noise like I thought I might.
Well, ill write back after I get the new deck. I'm really hoping for all functions or ill have to figure something else out...

OP, any update on whether the DAC and cable worked with the HOX+?
I'm interested in getting a DAC to work with my high impedance in ear monitors. The driver in the phone doesn't have enough output power to adequately drive them.
