Hello i seem to be having battery life problems because of mobile data, it sis constantly on because of the apps that use the internet while in the background. Therefore my phone is constantly using 3G and wastes heaps of battery.
So I'm asking, does anyone know how to restrict background data so no apps will be using the mobile data?
Ans don't tell me to use task killer because task killers constantly use data as well and if u kill an app, it just comes back.
Thanks.

Go into the market, search for 'onavo' and it should pull up an app that says 'onavo count'. Download it, set it up, and then search for the app that's hogging data within the onavo app. Click on it and tell onavo to restrict it to wifi only. Then, the app you restricted will be killed if it tries to use background data.
Onavo does not require root access
You can also use 'DroidWall' from the market if you're rooted. You can choose what apps have access to the Internet through mobile data aswell as Wifi. I only let apps I actually use have access to the Internet and all others have no connection even if I myself try to use it, unless I add them to the whitelist.

Here's the market link for ya

Or you can just turn off data when you're not using if.

Hi, I was wondering if there's an app or a setting to avoid some apps as facebook and market to auto-start when data connection or wifi are on.
Anytime I start data, their services are always started by their own.

Droid wall I think, but why would you want htem to not connect...
no, I don't want them not to connect, just want to start them manually when needed, not to start by theirself and drain memory. I want ofcourse grant them the internet acces, just want not to start automatically

android does not work that way, free memory is wasted memory, it is not like windows. If that memory is need linux kills what is not needed. If you are doing to keep free memory then dont bother...I always want all my memory being used...2.3 rom handle the memory very well and there is no need to manually kill apps or use 3rd party apps to do it like task killers...they are redundant on 2.3+ roms
and from the battery draining's point of view?
and if it affects the battery, is there a way to do what I said?

Whats the best application to use to monitor data usage that breaks down usage app-by-app?
I'm currently using 3g Watchdog Pro, but was wondering if there's something better?
I'm using Onavo. It shows you a breakdown of all your apps that use data and the respective amounts as well. It also plots your usage patterns etc. Handy app for tracking data usage on the fly.
I use "My Data Free"
It lives in the notification bar so its always available even if you dont use the widget....still has cool widget though. Breaks down data usage by app and you can even get a pie chart if thats your thing. tracks WiFi, regular data AND roaming data....its the BEST!

I use Onavo too, very handy, lets you set your data cycle start/end date, and seems to be pretty accurate.
Trafiic monitor is a good that breaks down what your apps are using.
+1 for Onavo. In addition to the usage breakdown by app, it gives you a heads up on potential data hogs when you first install them.

Good info. Now is there an app that will narrow down how much battery each app uses?

yeh thats the killer question
but most people judge what uses battery by what keeps phone awake, or how much time the app uses the CPU,but ive never actually seen any app that tells simply how much battery an app uses
mardi beads for anyone who can produce such an app

exactly where in there does it actually show "battery" usage???
It's not a simple app, you have to define a start point (default is since it was last charged i think), and you can look at which apps are using up all your battery and why. Use 'Process' to see apps.
The developers is an XDA member, I can't remember his name but i'm sure you can find him using google or forum search.

I'm pretty sure he means the one you found, "My Data Manager free". It's a nice free app, does a good job of breaking down data usage by wifi and mobile by app. You can set your data limits, when your billing period starts, etc. and it will make the pretty bar and pie charts for you. More importantly than the aesthetics, it does a good job of pointing out what apps are using up your data. For instance, I noticed that Google Currents was pulling down over 20 meg a night, which is all fine and dandy when on wifi, but if not, that's 600 Meg a month for something I barely used.
Hi all,
For some reason, my data plan keeps on being consumed extremely quickly. When I checked why, the primary suspect was gallery which consumed 130 MB out of my 200 MB plan. However, this is well after I disabled its ability to upload data in the background.
Any idea whats going on?
Dropbox and google + sync were both only enabled for over wifi, btw.
Thanks!
On ICS you can disable background data access....go to settings, data usage, find 'Gallery', then restrict background data

Tup Gallery gets triggered for everything and anything.
If you're rooted you can disable it via firewall. if not...well thats the main reason i rooted- for the firewall!

If you're rooted and only if you're rooted, download a firewall of your choice from play store.
I use droid wall but avast is also good. Once installed you can predefine which apps can connect via wireless/data networks.
Is there an app which helps to configure/ restrict the usage background data for mobile data and wifi?
I know on ics it can be done using the build in functionality, but it is a bit inconvenient.

noone having a good idea?
I look for something working like droidwall, but for background data only not for all data. Meaning where I have an overview on all Apps and where I can easily select/deselect which app may use background data on wifi and/or mobile networks

check for an app called 'Tasker' on play store
Thanks, i know tasker but its not about enabling/disabling background data following an event but a general setting which app may use foreground data only or also background data . On ICS it can be done in the data usage settings per app, but I search for a more easy to be used app

How to control the data usage? The battery drains fast with 3g data connection. Do we have any app to restrict the data to other installed apps on our own wish? When I choose restrict background data option, I lose the push notifications. Can someone suggest the best data control app which lets us the option to choose to only selective applications can access data? I have installed 3g watchdog and data manager, with these app, all I can see the data usage only and I couldn't manage/restrict the data accessed by the applications that are installed in my phone. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.
