[Q] S-OFF and Flashing ICS ROMs - HTC Rezound

Hey Everyone,
So i want to be able to flash all the cool ICS ROMS. I am on stock firmware with S-OFF (attached Screen Shot). My questions is can I flash new firmware (3.11.605.22) and start flashing all the ICS ROMs? I would rather update to ICS firmware then to install the 'old firmware patch'. Am I making a good call on this?
Here is what I plan to do:
Follow steps here to upgrage firmware.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1536297
But since I am S-OFF I am thinking I can just do step 5. Since I am S-OFF do I need to unlock boot loader?
1. Download the 3.11.605.22 Leaked RUU: LINK MD5 = 58b0f42defc689650ddd5128f195dc7d
2. Rename the RUU to "PH98IMG.zip"
3. Copy the renamed RUU to the root of your external SD Card.
4. Re-lock the bootloader.
Open a DOS prompt and change directory to the folder where you have fastboot.exe
Reboot to bootloader
Type "fastboot oem lock" (No Quotes) while you are in bootloader (fastboot usb).
5. Reboot to bootloader again via recovery menu.
The bootloader will begin to scan the PH98IMG.zip - This will take awhile
When it asks if you want to update press volume up for yes.
The update will make the first pass - This will take awhile as well
The phone will reboot and sit on the white HTC screen - DO NOT freak out once again "this will take awhile"
When it is done it will reboot back to fastboot mode.
Make sure "Bootloader" is highlighted and then press the power button to run the second pass of the install - once again "this will take awhile " - watch the screen to verify ok next to each partition
Once complete press the power button to reboot.
Your device will now begin booting on the newly installed Leaked RUU
6. Once booted skip everything in setup
7. Proceed to http://htcdev.com/ to unlock the bootloader - Unlock keys do expire so you may need to request a new key.
8. Install the custom recovery of your choice.
9. Flash RezROM as instructed above.
Then start flashing Clean ROM or Ivysaur ROM.
Thanks for any help...

sorry didn't get back to you sooner, was doing something else.
Since no one has helped you, i'll give you some tips.
there is a newer leak you can flash. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1639731
so download, rename to PH98IMG.ZIP, and put on the actual SD CARD not the internal card. It will wipe the internal card.
Reboot into bootloader, and when asked chose volume up to flash. In my case it should flash through twice on its own. If not click power when it gets done flashing the hboot. Remove the PH98IMG.ZIP file off the sd card, and then reboot into the bootloader and chose factory reset. If you don't you may have radio issues. I did.
you do not need to unlock as you are s-off. grab the PH98IMG.ZIP i attached and flash to install amon ra 3.15
then you can flash whatever ICS rom you want. Just note you will need to flash a file if you go back to GB to change the mount points back. So opposite of the ICS OLD FIRMWARE PATCH.
You will not be able to use fastboot commands with this HBOOT. You will have to flash anything you want to flash through hboot with a PH98IMG.ZIP file.

Hey nosympathy,
No problem with the delay, thanks again for the guidance. I see you said I will not be able to run fastboot cmds with this new hboot. Will this be an issue? I am not saying I am a power user on flashing ROMs but could I ever get into a situation where I will need to run fastboot cmds?

Really only if you needed to say flash a recovery, or a boot.img without them being in a PH98IMG.ZIP file.
In all likely hood, team juopunutbear will probably end up hex editing the actual ICS release hboot, so we can run these commands. You can also unlock the bootloader again, but it makes it a pain to say locked instead of relocked again.
So more than likely, you would not on a daily basis need these commands.

Great response time!
For us newbs, I'd like to clarify... This isn't an alternative HoneyComb, yet. Just an attempt to make the OTA honeycomb "unlockable", right?

Right. That's the "recovery" part.
But its also described as "root, and all". I'm wondering if this allows the installer to root the OTA Honeycomb? Or will more work be required before the install can be further changed (i.e. s-off, eventually upgraded to ICS, etc.)?
It works
I can confirm this works with root flashed and all. I now have a rooted HC. tyvm globatron

so, does that mean you could, in theory, flash a custom HC rom once we get one?
Throw up some screenshots or a video would you?
edit: oh and test rom manager and titanium backup if you don't mind.
I have a rooted CWM backup of the stock.
Do I need to restore and then unroot before proceeding with HC?
stuck on soft brick..
Hey Guys
how do you do the step 6?
I am in cmd and kept telling me command not recornized or something...
I guess I need to know how to flash that RUU-mini zip...
thanks for all your help...

No, as it says in the OP, You MUST be s-off and THEN run an RUU. Accept all updates to include the HC update and the view will be soft bricked. THEN use fastboot to push the mini ruu.

If it says it's an unrecognized command, then either you do not have fastboot installed, or you haven't gone into environment variables (assuming it's a windows box) and added those commands to the path. try that first (google is your friend and you can google in XDA). Good luck.
A quick question here. Once it is the soft brick mode, I hold down power and volume down to get back to fastboot mode. Is this correct? And I know the ruu will wipe my data but nothing here should wipe the internal sd, correct?
thank you so much for quick respond..
I think I found it here how to do that.. (for someone like me... )

root
Im not sure what this method of rooting will do for us, but I am under the impression that this will help if we need to go back to GB, or flash another custom HC rom when someone else cooks one up. I have not tested downgrading.
I can report that clockwork is installed with the option to flash from zip, mounts, etc just like the old clockwork. And I still have S-OFF. I installed ROM manager, but it gave me the "you don't have clockwork installed" message. I'm not sure if that is normal, because I don't use ROM Manager. Titanium did see root. Check out the screens.

I haven't done this yet, but I'm dling the RUU right now to do it and help people troubleshoot.
To answer your question, if you hold down the power button long enough, the view will power off, then you can hold power + vol down to get back into the bootloader and select fastboot mode, then open cmd, type fastboot devices and check to make sure yours shows up, then proceed with pushing the mini-ruu. If I'm wrong guys, correct me. Hope it works out for you.

Im not sure if this matters, but when I was in soft brick, I rebooted a few times and could not get into the bootloader. It just seemed to ignore the vol down keypress. I then unplugged the usb, powered off from soft brick, and held the vol. down button down even before I hit the power button as I was turning it on. Once I was in bootloader, I just plugged the usb back in.
EDIT: More tips:
1.After I flashed the initial stock ruu, and before I accepted any updates, I turned off fastboot in the power options and enabled usb debugging.
2. I did this from a Windows 7 laptop. When I initially tried to perform the softbrick steps, I got an access denied error message. The files were sent ok, but errored on saving. I closed the command prompt, and re-lauched the command prompt as administrator. The commands sent successfully.
3. Also, once you send the mini ruu over, the Tablet sat in the the oem loader with a 70% full progress bar after I successfully sent the mini ruu. I waited about 10 minutes because I was unsure how to proceed. I finally issued:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Once back into bootloader, I mounted usb storage, copied SU to the card, and flashed from zip

Yeah, rom manager won't work bc we don't have official support from Koush for CWM recovery so that's no issue, I was just curious is all lol. I'm glad to hear titanium detects root, as that was an issue initially for the view. Try to backup your apps, test radios (3g, 4g, wifi, bluetooth, GPS, ETC), run quadrant. I don't know how familiar you are with honeycomb to test out all of it's functions, but we are going to need a few people to test this out for globatron so he can make fixes and/or adjustments as necessary, which is why he specifically asked for devs and people familiar with troubleshooting to do this first. That's the beauty of open source, we're all guinea pigs.
I forgot to ask this earlier. What does the soft brick state look like? Is it just the white screen the the green HTC on it? I want to make sure I don't power it off while it is still flashing HC.

It looks like this pic. Plus another clue you are soft bricked is it stays here longer than 10 minutes if you care to wait lol

if you have a copy of your boot.img and/or your recovery.img file flash that through your fastboot usb screen and reboot you should be ok pending your /system and /data partitioms are ok... if not follow the rest....
ok im goignt to guess youre new to flashing and the android development... but first thing is first... download the stock recovery zip on the other listed thread and rename it PG86IMG.zip... then reboot into your hboot/bootloader.... this will install a stock rom and recovery AFTER that you must reboot then shut down and reboot into your hboot again and from there go to fastboot and plug in the usb cable so your prompt says fastboot usb and then relock your boot loaderafter that finishes reboot again to the ROM and then run your updates... after you get the updates you want you can unlock again and then reinstall superuser and proceed as you want....

Ok following your instructions I downloaded the RUU (two of them infact) changed the name to PG86IMG.zip, when booting into the bootloader, it starts checking the PG86IMG.zip file, there is a blue status bar on the top right, when it fills completely in, it just starting checking the SD card for files again, and then goes back to the normal bootloader screen with options to select fastboot, factory reset, etc... Is there something I missed? I believe there should be some more options.
EDIT: the football post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1334473 only goes to .exe files, I had downloaded a .zip file from a different source with the same name, Should I have changed the .exe to PG86IMG.zip?

no...do not install the exe file at all.... the zip file if it is a trusted source should work...after it loads the files it finishes booting into the hboot screen...from there you can boot into the rom to verify that there is no superuser program and then power down and boot into your hboot again and relock your bootloader then reboot to the rom and update....when you boot back into the rom after installing the zip file it should look like the way it was when you first got it...if not you may have the wrong zip file
Ok I found out there was a zip on that page, I will download that and see where I get. Thank you so much for the help so far.
Ok issue is solved. I guess I needed to be relocked before I could update with PG86IMG.zip. So I guess in the future make sure you are not rooted when trying to update

[Q] Confused about RUU firmware and mainver

Back from Moto-land with Rezound. I've flashed several ROMS and one I would like to flash now says that I must firs be on the leaked 3.11.605.22 firmware.
I thought that when I flashed a rom and it rebooted into bootloader to install the PH98IMG.zip file, that it was installing the necessary firmware. I'm confused.
How do I get to the necessary Leaked firmware. I've searched and googled, but everything I find, indicates that I cannot install the leak, because I have already used the HTC unlock tool. Again, confused
I appreciate your help!
ruu isn't a Tom that loads the kernel afterwards. the leak is flashed all at once which appears to be how kernels are flashed. flashing the leak requires the lock then it flashes everything together but remember it wipes all data with exception of external sd
Followup Q1: So is it possible to get to the RUU 3.11.605.22 firmware, WITHOUT re-locking and flashing the leak? (not concerned at all about full wipe, do it with each rom)
Q2: If I do have to re-lock and then flash the leak, do I first have to return to a 100% stock state (ie, restore all the bloat-ware and such)? (if you've ever had a Bionic you know what I'm talking about)

A little confused. Android Police says you have to be fully stock with a locked bootloader to install 605.22. According to this, I don't have to be stock, I just have to relock it, and be aware that the full RUU install with radios will wipe my entire phone except external SD? (I wouldn't ask this except that it directly contradicts the AP post.)
And do we have the ability to re-root the resulting ICS installation?
And there's no other way to apply just the radios and the pre-rooted (Non-RUU?) version?
Does the pre-rooted version also do a full wipe?

So far no other way to get the new radios , sounds like the only reason the OTA leak worked was the way it was packaged. This new leak isn't packaged the same way so you would have to relock and run the RUU to get the new radios.
Personally, all I did was reflash stock recovery before hand, but I had to run it a few times to get it to work fully and at one point I just relocked with amon recovery installed and ran it and it worked just fine. It wipes recovery as part of the installation and installs the updated stock recovery.

Sorry for the questions, but when I do all of this, will I still have the Amon Ra recovery, or does this return to the stock recovery (which I assume it does)?
When the PH file is flashed in recovery it will overwrite whatever recovery you had flashed previously and leave you with stock everything...including recovery.

I was able to upgrade to the new ROM and then re-unlock my phone. But when I put Amon Ra in SD folder as PH98IMG.zip and reboot to the loader, I am never prompted to install it. Furthermore, attempts to get into recovery result in a green circular icon followed by a red triangle with exclamation point.
I tried all sorts of resets and reboots. Right now I have a green recovery option, but no working recovery. The top line says "UNLOCKED".
I've tried Amon Ra 3.13 and 3.14.
Download this file.
Place it in the same folder that you setup for the HTCdev unlock.
Rename it to "recovery."
Go to the command prompt and type in this command: cd c:\nameoffolder (mine is c:\Android for example)
Boot into Hboot
Select Fastboot
Connect to PC
Then type this exactly : fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
That should get you loaded with Amon Ra.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19205213
Installation instructions are in the OP.
What you see now when you select recovery in hboot is what is considered stock recovery

Thank you. I had already figured it out, and this is exactly what the problem was. Last time I flashed with a PH98IMG version of recovery, but this latest version that I have is for Fastboot. Thanks!
Never thought it would be such a relief to see the "TAMPERED" warning, lol.
All is good!

[HOW TO] S-Off, Flash ICS ROM, Flash ENG HBOOT, Recovery and Root!

This will explain everything you need to do to get S-Off, ICS ROM, ENG HBOOT, Recovery and Root.
Things you need to download:
My AIO Kit. Get the full version from here.
SuperUser from here
ENG HBOOT from here
ICS ROM from here
Stock T-Mobile 1.43 ROM from here
READ S-Off Instructions from here.
S-Off Tool from here. (Download is in the bottom)
As always, I do not take any responsibility for what happens to your phone. I've done this myself and I can confirm that it works.
This is for T-Mobile Users ONLY (for now). I'll edit it for other users soon.
BACK UP YOUR INFO FROM YOUR PHONE MEMORY AND SD CARD.
1. Make sure USB Debugging is enabled. Go to Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB Debugging.
2. Download my tool and run it. If your bootloader is unlocked (most likely it is), on my tool, press "Boot into Bootloader". After you are in bootloader, run the "Relock Bootloader" command
3. Put the Stock T-Mobile 1.43 ROM on to your SD Card. Make sure it in the root folder. Rename the file to PH85IMG. Run the command on my tool to "Boot into Bootloader" It should scan for the ROM. If it doesn't (It may be in Fastboot mode, that's why) press the power button so it switches from Fastboot into HBOOT mode.
4. It will detect it and press the Volume Up button. It will flash the Stock ROM. After the phone boots up, re enable USB Debugging again.
5. Get your unlock_code.bin from HTCDev (unless you have it) and place it in the Data folder of my tool.
6. Run the "Unlock Bootloader" command.
7. When it sends the .bin file to your phone, press Volume Up and the Power Button. It will unlock your bootloader. Re enable USB Debugging again.
8. Flash CWM 5.0.2.7 recovery from my tool.
9. Place the SuperUser zip file onto your SD Card (not the internal one!). From my tool, press "Boot into Recovery". Go to "Install Zip From SD Card", "Choose Zip from SD Card" and flash "Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip". Press the back button and select "Reboot System Now"
10. Read the S-Off instructions carefully and watch the video.
BACK UP YOUR INFO FROM YOUR PHONE MEMORY AND SD CARD.
Put an blank memory card in your phone. Run the tool and do the wire trick.
11. After it is all done, re enable USB Debugging. Put the ICS ROM on your SD Card. Rename it to PH85IMG. Run the command on my tool to "Boot into Bootloader" It should scan for the ROM. If it doesn't (It may be in Fastboot mode, that's why) press the power button so it switches from Fastboot into HBOOT mode. Press Volume Up and it will flash the ICS ROM. (It will boot twice into bootloader so DO NOT TOUCH YOUR PHONE). After it is done, press the power button and the phone will restart.
12. When it turns back on, re enable USB Debugging. Put the ENG HBOOT on your SD Card. Rename it to PH85IMG. Run the command on my tool to "Boot into Bootloader" It should scan for the HBOOT. If it doesn't (It may be in Fastboot mode, that's why) press the power button so it switches from Fastboot into HBOOT mode. Press Volume Up and now you have ENG HBOOT.
13. Flash CWM 5.0.2.7 recovery from my tool.
14. Place the SuperUser zip file onto your SD Card (not the internal one!). From my tool, press "Boot into Recovery". Go to "Install Zip From SD Card", "Choose Zip from SD Card" and flash "Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip". Press the back button and select "Reboot System Now"
You are now fully S-Off'd, have ICS installed and fully rooted!
Please be sure to thank all the devs that made all the tools and mods!
Alot of info here.
If I already flashed the ICS leak , now locked bootloader , S still ON.
Would it be 5-9 then step 13 ?

If you are on the ICS leak, I believe the new HBOOT that comes with it does not support flashing recoveries. I could be wrong though.
If you want to S-Off, follow from step 5 and onward.
If the new HBOOT supports flashing recoveries, do as you said, 5-9.

Great tutorial Hasoon but shouldn't you mention in steps 3, 11 and 12 that once you've finished flashing the ph85img file and rebooted in each case that that file should be deleted to avoid any conflict with the next step renaming to ph85img? If noobs already see a ph85img file, they might think the correct one is already there instead of deleting the old one and renaming the next step file ph85img which would be a totally different file. Just my thoughts to avoid any confusion which inevitably will happen. lol
Unlocked via HTC DEV my old info wasnt working for whatever reason.
Followed steps recovery flashed , superuser flashed.
Titanium cant get root priveleges. Updates SU DLd busybox.
Not sure if Im rooted or if the app is wonky.

Download Root Check Basic and take a screenshot of what it says. Let me see if the files got the correct permissions.
Weird , BusyBox was not launching anything. Rebooted now it does says SU not giving permission.
SU switched from Prompt to Allow no difference.
Update stops at checking for root.
RootCheck "sorry this device does not have proper root access"
For clarity S On , Bootloader is unlocked , CWM is installed , I flashed SU zip twice. ICS leak installed prior to all the above. S On, rooted , custom rom prior to ICS update.

Great to hear it worked!
Thanks! I love it lol. Makes my life easier as well!
Thanks but I think that the directions could be even more explicit.
Using the all in one tool, it is not clear whether the phone needs to be connected to usb (some people may forget), and it's not clear what mode the phone needs to be in. Does it need to be in the bootloader menu by pressing vol down and power? Or can you just plug the phone in via usb and start it working?

help rezound stuck in bootloader.........

stuck in bootloader after trying to flash sense4boot.img,relocked bootloader and now no recovery and cmd in adb, fastboot does nothing.downloaded ruu from htc put in zip and renamed it PH98IMG,moved to sd,booted into bootloader and let it run. it turned security warning off but now i am stuck.what now any ideas? thanks for your time in advance
Ruu needs to be run twice, then install amon ra 3.15, then the Rom of your choosing.
Here's amon ra, rename it ph98img.zip and run it in bootloader AFTER your run ruu 2x.

thanks for the fast reply, installed all three one after another using ph98img and when reboot it goes back to bootloader/security warning?is the ruu under kernel at htcdev.com
FIXED heres how Copy Internal SD card contents to your computer. The Relocking/RUU process wipes the phones internal memory. I also recommend having a backup copy of your SD card kept on the computer and updated every so often.
Place the Android Police RUU file on your external SD card, and rename to "PH98IMG.zip"
Useful Tip - In Windows 7 click on "Organize" in the windows explorer menu. Then select "Folder and Search Options" When The Folder Option windo appears click on "View" and uncheck "Hide Extensions of Known File types." This will prevent windows from naming a file PH98IMG.zip.zip
Relock the bootloader using Fastboot. On your computer browse the the folder fastboot.exe is in. If it's C"\Android" then you would hold Shift and right click on "Android" and select "Open Command Window Here
Connect your phone to USB, and boot your phone into fastboot by powering off, then powering into hboot holding power + vol down
When hboot comes up on the screen it may show it's "loading" the PH98IMG.zip file. Just wait for it to load and say no to the update. Then select fastboot, and when you enter fastboot, "Fastboot USB" will display on the screen in red
The command prompt should display "C:\Android..." Type fastboot oem lock and hit enter
Your bootloader will show relocked, may give a security warning, and saying "Tampered" is a good thing
Now that it's locked, choose bootloader instead of fastboot. Rebooting the bootloader will allow it to see the PH98IMG.zip (RUU) file again. It may take a minute or two to load, and will then ask if you would like to update. Select yes and press Power to begin
IMPORTANT - This is tricky and where people mess up in the proccess. You have to completely flash this RUU twice for it to write everything correctly. In fact it may even seem like three times because of how it reboots itself along the way.
Once it starts update you can unplug the USB cord. This is a large update, so it will not be instant like a tiny kernel. You're writing 650 MB of updates as opposed to 3 MB in the kernel install you're used to.
It will show you on the screen what it's doing. It will probably power itself on and off a couple of times and come back to bootloader or fastboot. When it does, just reboot bootloader and say yes to update. Now it will be updating steps 1 thru 18 in sequential order. Sometimes it does everything without going back to the fastboot screen and that's ok. Once it does the updates 1 thru 7 or 1 thru 18 it will probably reboot itself and show the white HTC screen. When it's on this white boot animation, pull the battery and boot into bootloader again (power + vol down) and select yes to run the PH98IMG.zip. This second time on the full update, it may appear to be doing step 7 repeatedly, it's supposed to do that just let it keep doing it's thing. When the update is complete, it will say that it successfully completed and press power to reboot. Asking you to press power to reboot after the second full flash is how you know that it's finished with the complete update.
It will be a long first boot, but will boot itself into the new stock ICS rom from the RUU
Installation process - Part 2
You should now be booted into the stock RUU rom and sitting at a setup screen. You need to go through this setup screen but do not need to sign into anything. Just press next and skip to get through it to the homescreens.
Place the phone in disc drive mode so that you can access the external SD card.
Remove the PH98IMG.zip from your external SD card. You can delete it if you already have a copy on your PC or have no reason to save it. Just so long as it's off the SD card.
Now power the phone down and then boot back into hboot with power_vol down just like before, put it in Fastboot -USB mode once again plugged into the computer
Now you will use the HTCdev unlock key that you gathered at the beginning. It may already be in the correct folder or you may need to copy it Needs to be in the same folder as the fastboot.exe application, either C:\Android or C:\Android-SDK\Platform Tools
Your command prompt window should still be open from when you relocked the bootloader. This time type the command fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin and press enter
Your bootloader should unlock, you have to say yes to unlock on the phone itself and upon being confirmed, the phone will reboot
Allow the phone to reboot itself, and then turn the phone off and power back into hboot/Fastboot - USB again
The amon RA recovery img was downloaded at the very start with the other files. Rename this file to recovery.img and place it in the same folder as the fastboot.exe application in Android SDK (Hint - Same place you dropped the Unlock_code.bin
In your command window type fastboot flash recovery recovery.img and press enter
then fastboot reboot you now have recovery put rom of choice on sd flash that and what ever else developer for rom has you to.hope it works for you and last but not least CRIDET to theandroidsoul.com this is where i found the text and it was Posted on March 4, 2012 in Hacks, HTC by Kapil also THANKS to ericsignals for pointind in right direction.
