[Q] i9100 v. 19100g - audio DAC affect call quality? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm looking to purchase an S2, debating whether or not to get the i9100 or the i9100g. Overall, they seem pretty even, given that they both have pros and cons.
This is a phone after all which means I'll be placing and receiving calls and maximizing call quality is important to me. Reportedly, the i9100g has a better audio DAC.
My question is, does the audio DAC affect call quality at all (I mean native calls, not via apps like Skype)? Or does this only affect other types of sound, like music, sound effects, etc? If the audio DAC has nothing to do with native call quality, then theoretically, neither version is better or worse than the other.
Thanks in advance.

i9100G is inferior and has poor rom development .

i am sure i posted here
who deleted it :/
i9100 is way better
better chipset/camera/ screen everything

Thanks but I'm looking for the answer to my specific question - does audio dac affect voice quality (both mine and other party) in calls? It's a fact that the TI chipset has a different dac than the exynos.
Those generic responses don't help as I've stated that I already looked into the pros/cons of both models already.
Thanks.

Talked to someone at work. In layman terms, he said that since voice calling quality is relatively low fidelity compared to listening to high quality MP3s, the difference in the DACs probably won't be noticed during phone conversations.
Anyone agree/disagree?
Also, the G doesn't seem to be necessarily inferior according to some people. From what I've read, non-G has faster GPU, more community support, little smoother. The G has slightly better battery life, no color banding, less heat. It seems like personal preference to me. So back to my original question - if the answer was yes the DAC affects call quality, I probably would go with the G since call quality is important to me. Otherwise, it's a coin toss for me. I'm not a hardcore modder, the most I'll probably do is root the phone lol.

Sound quality improvement?

My old Captivate's power button has sadly died and I'm currently working on tweaks to operate my phone (volume rockers wake up the phone and the search button functions as the power button). I'm looking to upgrade to the AT&T SGS II, but there is only ONE thing holding me back - the sound quality. I am an audiophile, and I really like the sound of a Voodoo'd SGS 1. I've read that the 2.3.5 update for the international SGS II has really improved the sound quality. I'm truthfully not interested in the volume levels, as my reshelled TF10s don't need a powerful source to drive. My concern is strictly SQ-related. Is there a way to get the benefits of the 2.3.5 update on the AT&T SGS II? Or is there another way to noticably improve the sound quality?
My current Captivate setup consists of: Voodoo Sound, Galaxy Tuner (for the EQ tweaks, which do not appear to negatively impact the overall SQ), and PowerAmp (strictly for the interface, as the EQ settings result in very, very, very minor sound distortion, though the average user probably wouldn't notice even if they tried, but bothers me to death). Thank you in advance!
Anyone?

I use stereo Bluetooth headset for hours a day (Motorola s305). I am not an audiophile, and never felt my cell phones had poor sound performance. I also had a captivate and was satisfied with the stock sound.
Currently things like voodoo are not on the SGS II. They weren't on the captivate right away, it was several months. I think you just need a little patience, we'll get those kinds of tweaks in due time. I am not a patient person, so I feel your pain.
I read in another post that CM7 audio is handled differently especially over Bluetooth. Supposed to be a lot better. That may be an interim solution until we get some tweaks. I have never tried CM7, never saw the appeal, whenever I look at it, its hard for me to get past the things that don't work yet. Does the captivate have a fully functional CM7 yet? When I left a month ago it was still a RC.

You're using Bluetooth audio, and thus, what you encounter and what I'll encounter will be different considering I'm using IEMs with a 3.5mm plug. And I know that Supercurio, the man responsible for Voodoo on the SGS1, will not do such a thing for the SGS2. Thank you for your input though.
I'm not quite an audiophile but the GS2 leaves a lot to be desired in the audio quality department. I was almost shocked at how muffled it was. I did some tweaking in the settings and I would call it passable now. Hopefully the impending 2.3.5 update will improve the ATT version too. Personally, it's not bad enough to make me want to get another phone or anything.
I see. Muffling is really the only negative you can point out in the sound quality?

[Q] Note better Audio Quality than Galaxy SII?

Just read the Gsmarena review of the Note and noticed that it had significantly better audio quality than the SGS 2, so there may yet be hope that we'll see this transferred to our own beloved handset.
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_note_n7000-review-676p8.php
Could this mean that Samsung fixed the faulty audio codec that went into our SGS2s?
Hmmm interesting. Wonder if there are any differences in drivers or configuration.

I personally don't think there is anything wrong with the sound in the SGSII especially since the 2.3.5 upgrade which was a substantial improvement.

Haha, I am using the latest 2.3.6. You should find and run a frequency sweep file on the phone to understand what it is capable of (you would know how much of IMD, THD and noise it is CAPABLE of generating!). Even without voodoo, none of these issues exist on SGS1 or SGR!

[Q] Smartphone for an Audiophile

Presently have a Galaxy Nexus & an S2. Both are fine phones in their own right but....
I don't think there all that good at audio reproduction..
I want to use my flac music files with kplisch earphones with Poweramp.
Can you recommend an andriod smartphone thats got excellent sound quality?
As the title says....I'm looking for a Smartphone for an Audiophile.

a HTC maybe? they have beats audio
Sensation, Sensation XE, One X, S, V...
You should install Equalizer on whatever phone you get. It has a system wide EQ that doesn't require root.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.smartandroidapps.equalizer
I'm not really sure what Beats Audio does, I imagine its just an equalizer. I imagine the beats headphones are a total scam as they are made by Monster the same company that rips people off by selling them overpriced HDMI cables saying they are somehow better.
Rezound or One X

You do know Texas instruments bought burr brown a few years ago? On that note I prefer ti's sound chip over wolfson's slightly. The sound is cleaner and more balanced. The wolfson sounds great but has muddier bass.

Any phone with Beats Audio (some say it isn't THAT good) or any Xperia phone (the Xperia P have xLoud + 3D Sound)

I'm in the UK so it'd have to be a model that works over here.
I've heard that beats audio doesn't make that much difference & doesn't really improve the sound
Try the Sony Ericsson smart phones as they produce the best quality audio. Like Xperia, Walkman Live, etc...
Stay away from anything with beats. The headphones are overpriced rubbish (you have your own anyway) and the sowftware is just a glorified EQ which in my opinion is far to exaggerated and detracts from the sound quality. I'm not sure which phones have the best DAC chips but I bet it would be one of the Sony phones marketed for music playback. if you really wanted to figure it out you could go through each prospective phones spec sheets and compare the data.
Or you could do what I did and accept that phones arent very good at audio playback and get yourself a decent music player. i went and bought sansa clip which is so much better than my galaxy s2 at music playback

Moving to Q&A
Say NO to beats audio - it's overpriced and you get nothing special in terms of hardware. Almost every HTC's are SoC and are all the same with audio hardware.
I own HD2 and sound quality is very good, though far from superior. Some samsung's are good too, few motorola's have excellent audio quality.
I've always thought beats to be a gimmick.
Is there anyway of finding out what DAC is in a smart phone. I tried google but didn't get very far.
Whats the new HTX One X like for music with beats off of course.
Any other recommendation's would be cool.
Get the Galaxy S. Remember: only the original Galaxy S and its variants (captivate, vibrant, epic touch something). Its Wolfson DAC is awesome, it's even more powerful with Voodoo Sound. And with a decent audio player (like PowerAmp) = perfect.

SGS Plus also uses a Wolfson DAC like the original SGS, but not exactly the same one. Supercurio (Voodoo sound developer) said there will be no Voodoo Sound for the SGS+ because of that.
WOW. Do not listen to ANYTHING people say regarding Beats and HTC. It's just a terrible equalizer that bloats the bass, and shatters the mids and don't even ask about highs. To get straight to the point: no phone currently out is good source material. At all. You should get a portable amp, like say, the E7 or E17 and run with that. Beats is THE ABSOLUTE WORST thing you can go for right now.
That being said, I suppose the Galaxy S is best for your needs. I would hazard a guess that most Sony phone have decent source components in them as well.
Seriously can't believe people are recommending the One X or the Rezound. If it's just because Beats, that's silly. Has NOTHING to do with the quality of the source components. Beats Audio is a terrible program and nothing more (outside of the terrible earbuds and terrible cans)

Audio and camera quality comparison questions.

Well im on verizon and in DESPERATE need upgrade from my tbolt. I am really interested in the one x but verizon isnt going to offer it. In fact the only thing that seems worth it on verizon is the s3. Ive looked for revies but can find any that compares the Samsungs audio and htc beats audio. Can anyone tell me what they think is better for sound?
As far as camera goes, it looks like the one x has better/more features with its camera. Please correct me if im wrong.
the s3 will have the wolfson dac audio chip, supercurio a member here will work wonders for the audio.
check out voodoo sound on the sgs forums
There isn't much difference in the cameras overall to be honest (I have a One X, and also had hands-on the S3). In good lighting conditions the S3 takes slightly better shots, in lower light the One X does. S3 does better video.
In relation to audio - I didn't have enough time to properly A/B the S3, but the (international) One X SQ is very average.

No Edge? Resolution not true HD?

Hey people... I had the Galaxy s 3 and wonder why there's no option for edge? Being on 4g 24-7 actually kills the battery bad! I truly feel that people with these 12 hours etc aren't using their phone
and another thing... the settings and in other parts of the phone, text is HUGE... the PPI is 306 i think and because the screen is 4.8, it takes away from the HD quality a bit.. the galaxy s 2 was annoying because of the huge font sizes.. and yes I know about the settings pertaining to font on the s3 but it's still huge when going to settings etc.. doesn't annoy anyone?
and another thing.. I dare someone turn on some music, (hopefully your base is working good), record a video with your gs3 and play it back.. you'll hear how muffled the sound is.. so terrible man

I don't actually have the phone yet, but did they remove the option under Wireless Settings --> Mobile Networks called "Use only 2G networks"? That's usually a stock setting. If they did remove it, guess it'll be available via CyanogenMod soon. :]

Did your previous smartphone have a decent microphone for video recording? In my experience, no smartphones have microphones capable of decently capturing bass... heck, even point-and-shoot cameras tend to be terrible at it now. I agree that it's lame, but this isn't a specific fault with the Galaxy S 3 as much as smartphone mics in general.
As far as battery life goes I have zero problems at all with it... I mean idk if your screen time is like 6+ hours with heavy usage or what.. I came from vzw and comparing it to any LTE phone I had on their network the S3 has great battery life..

and yes.. the galaxy s 2 for tmobile actually sounds way better.. i guess we'll just have to take it on the chin because previous galaxy s deices had better audio recording quality. It seems to be better on the US version than the international one. I may be getting the phone back.. i returned it because I was very unhappy this these particular issues. But i need a new phone! damn thing makes you go through the emotions lol

Sucks to hear that - but I can confirm that the original Galaxy S (Vibrant on T-Mobile) had one of the worst microphones I've ever used on a device. Any recordings I made at concerts were completely inaudible and unusable.
You returned your phone over poor camera audio quality? How often do you record videos with your phone? You could buy a 1080p-capable Canon PowerShot that takes better video/audio for between $100 and $150.

I do often and have many videos.. it's just convenient and fun to be able to use your phone to record videos which it's store for viewing later as well.
If i do get it back.. i will definitely just use my REAL video camera now to record stuff.
The large text is one the reasons ppl say touchwiz looks "cartoony". The icons have always been oversized, as well as the text, and combine that with amoled colors that look under life like, and things do look as if they're right out of a cartoon. Samsung has the best hardware available, but their UI could look a little more "mature". I think Samsung is aware of people's disappointment here though? Unless the one x makes it Tmo, I don't think you'll do any better than the gs3. But, you could give the note a try, the video on it is very good, and I don't recall the audio appalling me, but your probably more critical in that area than I am. Also, the icons and text look slightly smaller on the notes 720p display because of its larger size. Good luck Bro, I hope you end up with something you don't have to settle for.

agreed and I appreciate that. Something's telling em to hold out until after google Io conference and see what Jellybean will bring and what new phones will be released on tmobile.. wish tmobile could use more unlocked phone on their hspa+ network.. so annoying

This just happened to me - I was hiking all day and didn't need 4G - no option for 2G only what the hell? Why would they do that? As much as they tried, I will still be putting a custom rom on this phone.
I did a recording yesterday and its not bad at all. I think its the best so far compared to the s1 and s2.
